Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

I swear, the first time you hear this band, you're going to think this is Geddy Lee's 'emo-core' side project; but, as soon as you get past the striking similarities to Rush's lead singer, Coheed and Cambria really does have something special to add to the 'scene'.. or.. whatever.

In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3 does not only have a strange name, but features some of the catchiest, darkest, most melodic songs I've heard all year from any band. The eerie contrast in 'A Favor House Atlantic' between the seemingly happy instrumentals, and the twisted and surely emotional lyrics (Good eye, sniper/I shoot, you run/The words you scribbled on the walls/With the loss of friends you didn't have/I called you and the time is right/Are you in or are you out?).

From there, you've got the songs that are purely twisted and emotional, like ’The Camper Velorium III: Al The Killer’ (ok, I don't know what’s up with these track names either, maybe I’m not 'emo-core' enough). This song is about as dark as you can get (When I kill her, I'll have her./Dance upon the graves of the dead, upon your name/Die white girls, die white girls./Dance upon the graves of the dead, upon the graves of the dead) but it's just as catchy as the rest of the songs, and it's what makes Coheed and Cambria special.

Usually with bands like this, they’re just purely emotional, and they don’t make much of an attempt to make it listenable. I think that we've had enough screaming and crying in albums, and that it's time for some innovation. It's a hard concept to grasp, I know. This band proves that if you want to be sad, be sad, but you can still make some good music; and if you want to listen to the harmonies, listen to the harmonies, and if you want to get real fucked up listening to these lyrics, go right ahead. The level of depth to this band is amazing, and it’s what sets them apart from bands like Thursday or Thrice (who, coincidentally, they are currently on tour with).

From the odd track titles, to the ridiculously catchy melodies and dark lyrics, it’s not hard to realize that Coheed and Cambria is one special band. This eleven track dynamo will have you enticed from the time you buy it, to at least like, three weeks after. Buy this album.

This band is fucking amazing. I am forming a rock band as we speak, and I love my dad's big influences, like Iron Maiden and shit, but Coheed and Cambria is definitely my biggest musical influence. I love them. Claudio is a fucking genius. He and the rest of the band members are amazing. So anybody who wants to unfairly criticize the can go suck a fat one.
P.S: I think it will be really interesting to see what the band does after Good Apollo...Volume Two. (this album marks the end of the Coheed saga 4 u dumb fucks who don't know!)

now that i have an account on here...i will re-post my review on this album...

for all of you tonedeaf dumbshits who don't have anything better to do than trash this amazingly talented band because of claudio's high singing voice...go run around with a plastic bag on your head. this cd is amazing. not only musically, but they way it has been put together lyrically. this cd is the 3rd section in a series of four sections of the story of coheed and cambria. it is the band's second release, but still the third in sequence (now you know what the numbers in the album titles are for). the reason the song names are so fucked up and the lryics are at times so morbid, is because it all goes along with the story. if you would take the time to actually listen to any of it past his voice, you would notice that the lyrics would actually have to have some thought and effort put into them. the musicians in this band are absolutely amazing as well. i would recommend watching "Coheed and Cambria: Live at the Starland Ballroom" for anyone who thinks this band sucks. watch the hands of travis stever and claudio sanchez as they play the guitar parts from everything evil. tell me that is no talent...and THEN bear in mind that claudio is playing all of this WHILE SINGING! sure, he sings high, but listen to his vocal range and talent...simply amazing. also, this band actually plays the songs with very tricky riffs and solos live. they aren't like other bands who shy away from their songs that have hard-to-nail guitar parts, or face-melting solos, the dive into them head-first.

the only reason i give this a 9 instead of a 10 is because i enjoy The Second Stage Turbine Blade more musically, but this one more along the lines of the story.

quit bashing this band unless you have something to complain about other than his voice, or because you are one of those conformist "i hate emo because of chris carabba" people. this isn't even emo, dumbshit. grow some balls and open your ears to the auditorial utopia that is coheed.

yerr this cd's grrrr8 first one of coheeds i heard and i got into it purely cos of the atmospheric music like 'cuts marked in the march of men' and 'the crowing' not to mention the end of the world feeling in 'in keeping secrets' this band must come above the rest, and whoever wants to put this band into the genre of emo' then i must kill you!!! lol...this is rock, their own rock and epic....so therefore we have epic/rock these guys own the epic genre and pretty much lets just say they may have created it! the hole story of coheed and cambria is somthing to look out for!!

if you enjoy coheed keep enjoying and buy good apollo at the very least (as well as in keeping secret) but i'd strongly urge you to also get the second stage turbine blade' thers things on that cd that isnt goin to be followed up by the band again, an atmosphere that is only on that cd!

if you dont enjoy coheed...then listen more open minded..a few more times at least, and if you still dont like it .......BALLS TO YA!!!

i bought this cd about 4 months ago, and it is the only thing that has been in my cd player longer than the new thursday cd. everyone that says this band is emo, its not. listen to the damn lyrics. the song "Three Evils (Embodied In Love And Shadow)" is about fucking torturing someone for information, and killing his fucking son! is that emo? not in my book. in fact, i even liked this cd enough to go out and buy the first one a few weeks ago. (if you want the story, you have to have both albums, or go to http://www.plyrics.com/c/coheedandcambria.html
to read the lyrics.) yea, he sings really damn high, but, its not a bad thing. its different for christ sake! seriously, if you dont have this cd, go out and buy it, and Second Stage Turbine Blade. both very damn good cds.

I didn't buy the album because the artwork was pretty; I bought it because I was ordering the new Belle & Sebastian online, and the website offered free shipping if the order was over $20 or something. Then I saw an advertisement saying you get a free t-shirt with the C&C album, so went ahead and bought it, knowing I could get my money back by selling the shirt and CD on Ebay if I didn't like it. So I still don't regret buying it; I'm just saying I think it's god awful. And it's funny that the other guy was accusing me of liking MMJ because they're over-hyped, but has no problem defending C&C. Personally, I've heard a lot more hype over C&C than MMJ, but maybe that's because I'm not hip to epitonic or whatever he was talking about. MMJ deserves whatever credit they're given; that album is gold from start to finish. That's just my opinion though. If y'all wanna cream your shorts over this whiny shit, go ahead. Nobody's trying to stop you from liking them. I'm just putting in my own two cents.

I've never heard MMJ or Cass McCombs on the radio, but I wish I did. I like them because I happened to catch them both live, and they impressed me. So I bought their albums. C&C, on the other hand, was something I bought because everyone was talking about them and I wanted to see what all the hype was about. They didn't impress me at all. They're awful. I guess I should stop listening to MMJ now that I know they're on the radio and this Epitonic thing you speak of. From now on, I promise to only listen to bands that get good reviews on punknews.org. My Score:

The guy reviewing this cd obviously has no idea what's up with the band. The cd is the third part in a four part story...parts one and four aren't out yet. That's the reason for the lyrics and the song titles. The lyrics are a little dark...but the music is not consistent at all. It goes from pop to hard and back again. I won't listen to someone reviewing a cd when they say that Thursday and Thrice don't have deep lyrics.

This album is intelligent, witty, consonant, and fucking badass. Listen to "a favor house atlantic" if you are dying for a little catchiness. That song is awesome. This cd is so good I am going to bang it.

    Yeah...you heard me.

    Good eye sniper.

Coheed and Cambria is a concept band and most of their songs are about a story that is in the process of being written. That would explain the song titles.

I like this album a lot. I don't find the vocals annoying. The vocals are high, but it's not like he's wailing "OOhhhh douse me in gasoline and slit my wrists, my girlfriend dumped me", sounding like the cookie-monster the whole time.

"From the odd track titles, to the ridiculously catchy melodies and dark lyrics, it’s not hard to realize that Coheed and Cambria is one special band."

for sure, i cant think of any other bands with odd track titles and dark lyrics

You if you honestly think this band is dark you need to add a few Murder City Devils releases to you collection...

This band grows on you like the herpes. The best thing to do is get rid of it, like the herpes. Pawn the CDs and buy the new darkest hour CD.

You'll thank me a year from now.

Everyone's first thought with Co & Ca is "What the fuck?" This band grows on you. I like this album (and their last) more each time I listen to it.

Maybe if i actually tried to get past the lead singer's horribly annoying high pitched voice i could like this band.

I finally got a copy of this in the mail, and I've yet to get past the 3rd track or so [I lost count, since the first song is EIGHT FUCKING MINUTES LONG].

Biggest complaint - why can't I hear the guitars at all? It sounds like they were recorded a mile away from the mic!
