Published on October 28th 2003 This album walks a very fine line. Sure, bands like Meshuggah and Blood Has Been Shed can used crushing, repetitive riffs to make great songs that captivate you for the entire listen, but not every band can pull this style off. Enter A Life Once Lost, a band who has been somewhat critically acclaimed in the past. They follow this same formula, and at times they do it rather well, but like I said, they walk a very fine line. A few missteps and this would just be boring. Right off the bat I’m heavily reminded of Meshuggah, in fact, around the 1:30 mark of the first track, “Surreal Atrocities” I could swear I’m listening to “New Millennium Cyanide Christ”. The band churns through nine tracks with machine like precision, which is fine in some cases, but in others it begins to wear thin. In the past, the band has shown a bit more variety, and that does shine through from time to time on this disc, and that is where I believe this band is at its finest. As with many bands who try to emulate Meshuggah’s style, A Life Once Lost just falls short. The lyrics on this disc have a dark, ominous tone to them. Take the song “Maudlin” for example: “Her clothes smelled of mildew, ropes burned through her fragile wrists, I remember standing over her, wondering if she would die or live”. They’re a bit vague at times, but it’s not very hard to get the idea. Like a lot of the bands on Deathwish Inc., A Life Once Lost isn’t all about rainbows and bunny rabbits.
Basically, if you can’t get enough for Meshuggah styled metalcore bands, you’ll probably want to give this band a listen. I’m not that all the hype surrounding this band is warranted, but this is a solid release.

FUCK all you faggets that cant see real talent in music. obviously, you all have your heads to far up eachothers asses to give a rating of ...three... i say 11 out of 10. no question. these guys ROCK all you pieces of shit out there the hell out. a life onece lost is so fucking amazing..see them This album is terrible, and a lot of times you'll hear people say stuff like "dude, you gotta hear their old shit" but their old shit is just as bad too. Avoid at all costs. Did you check your ass? Maybe take the dick out of it and the review might just pop out. wheres the review for the new inspection 12 record? Im not really into punk rock at all. I actually like Bob Dylan hahahaha.....uhh...well, anyway this album rocks and so does the review by Forty. Rock on Forty!! whats up with these metalcore bands all having covers that are pictures with obvious layers of filters applied to them in photoshop. Stupid metal nerds.. What's with all the metalcore reviews lately? We demand more Drive-Thru pop-punk, dammit! Lambgoat is either hit or miss with me, sometimes I find their reviews to be dead on and sometimes they leave me scratching my head. By the way, ALOL was awesome last night despite one of their guitarist breaking his leg and having to sit in a drum throne, but he easily countered that with headbanging the whole time. Oh god. If you guys want unbiased metal/hardcore reviews go to Lambgoat. I believe this site reads PUNKNEWS.ORG and they could have just let this album go under the public's eye. It's not really that great, pick up Chaosphere by Meshuggah instead. i love how this website gives every generic, worthless nu-"punk" band a good review, but this great record only gets a lukewarm one Deathwish should send it to be reviewed, I'd be more than happy to write it. the EP is much better than this album. they're pretty decent live as well. at least they aint playing emo. i though the last ep was better but this is still good. and deathwish is a great label. you should review "one" by cursed. |
