Reviews

Hmm...you’re right, the singy-screamy thing is probably now the most cliched style of music being tried right now. However, you did click on this review, so the question on the tip of your tongue is - are these guys just going through the motions like some of the others?

For the most part, I’d have to say no. I mean, they got past the cliched band-name step pretty quickly, and from there they’re trying their very best to do more than mistake some planes for stars that were already picked up on. The Arizona natives use a creepy array of keyboard settings, piercing screams, and soothing string-picking to place a dark, emotive feel on the songs. There is hardly a gag reflex for Drive-Thru regurgitation to be found on the disc; in other words, there aren’t a lot of poppy parts you could blatantly pick out, but it runs without being nearly as chaotic as Finch or Glassjaw, finding a middle ground akin to a band like Recover, acting as a very mellow component for the genre.

The chilling synth leads us into the opener of the 26-minute EP, “What’s Up Now,” before a blatant scream of the track’s name and the guitars bust through. As the verse starts, the fairly solid vocals kick in, sung on a moderate tempo.

“It’s happening again” precedes abrupt decrescending riffs that appear throughout the second song, “Bulletproof,” and also displays the screams that sound as sharp and piercing as the tip of a fresh piece of broken glass while still emanating from the background, and has the best bridge of any tune, where they use swirling guitars and the haunting keyboards against the distorted NASA-like control center commands to help set the mood.

The verses of “Locked In,” besides some The verses of “Locked In,” besides some wavering moog noises, elicits a Spitalfield environment with its soft guitars and clear singing, before the personal philosophy lyrics like “we all seem to be on top of our own little world / but that won’t last long, for most of us” showcase themselves.

Highlighting the next song, “Sink and Die,” are the mellow background “ahhh”s while the breakdown’s preface begs the question “what we are good for now?” on the verge of sobs, all the while avoiding direct cries a la I Hate Myself. “Changing Priorities” is decent but seems like three minutes of filler until the keyboard is plugged on its grand piano setting for the intro and outro of “My Knife, Your Throat” (there’s that cliche we were looking for!).

If you didn’t like a single thing coming out of this genre, this probably won’t change your mind. But if you’ve been listening to too much of it lately and want something a little different, maybe a little more downtempo, this would be your thing.

What’s Up Now
Bulletproof
Locked In
Sink and Die
Changing Priorities
My Knife, Your Throat

So these guys wen to the same school I go to and they came back to play today. They are not my cup of tea (live, I have never heard what their cd sounds like with more pronounced synth and vocals), but I gotta say goddamn did they bring the fucking music. These guys played their fucking hearts out for a high school. That shows something that most local bands don't show. They at leats remember how cool it is to see a band who gives a damn. Hopefully they continue to give that damn and I'll go see them even if their music doesn't do it for me to support one band that has some heart.

I was in a band that played with these kids in 2001. They are still playing the same songs. They should maybe write some new material. I have respect for the members, however every song is the same and they have not grown in 4 years, just bought better equipment. You wanna see a guy scream his heart out on stage, go to a hardcore show and don't be a zumiez pussy.

"Check it, I've been in this scene for about 3 years now. Thursday, Thrice, CoCa, All amazing bands. By the way don't you dare diss on The Used. And don't talk shit and try to be original by dissing on the "Screamo" scene. There is a reason why it's so big right now, and it has to do with live shows and how intense and emotional seeing someone scream their heart out in front of you is. If you've seen SKSK you know they put on a live show that hold with the greats,(Saves the Day, AFI, The Early November.) Fucking Emotion, call it trendy, Scary Kids has a sound and maturity in their music that most bands never achieve, Being that I am an enthusiast of music, I think every band has their own sound. The singer to Scary Kids has one of the most unique and amazing voices in this category of music, so give some AZ pride, They fucking rock. I'm out

Damn, you're such a tool. Three years in the "scene" must have gotten you alot of scene points. Its about time you grew up. Thursday, Thrice, and CoCa are pretty good bands (although not reccomendable for everyone), but the Used is total shit. Instead of listening to Early November, STD, and other drive-thru shit, stick to emo that came out about pre-1999 and maybe you'll turn out fine.

But eh, this cd ain't that bad. And I give them points for the band name cuz its named after a Cap'n Jazz song.

I grew up with these guys. These guys are kick ass as fuck and have always been around for great times. I base the great times I have shared with them and others around their music. I have recently been gone for almost a year and have come back to see their succuss. I hope for it to perpetuate and fop all of them to make great choices.
It may sound that my friendship backs their music but with the life these guys live and the way they think it onlt takes talent which they have for them to jump through the roof. Iam 100 percent supportive for their run to the top! Good luck guys Jason Miller

You honestly don't expect them to be another one of those bands who follow trends to fit in? Because if they were like that, there wouldn't be anything fun and interesting about their music like there is now. Scary Kids is one of the BEST local bands here in Gilbert and I hope that they keep going with their music because it kicks ass! To all the guys: Keep rocking out because you guys fucking RULE!!! I love your music and ALL of you guys!

The sing scream thing is cliche cuz all new fucking bands do it, and I can count all the ones that use it effectively on my one hand.

And dont talk about The Used. You act like they were the first to ever do that style, well buddy, bands have been doing the sing/scream thing for over a decade now, its just now that it has become overwhelmingly stupid. Im sure the pricks in that band ripped off some bands you never heard of.

what is cliche out screaming? because its the most popular? that would make anything new trite, not cliche. but i gotta tell you, the reason its getting so much attention is because its so good. there are so many directions to go with it, and singing/screaming can evoke a lot more emotion than lame ass rhymes or insincere harmonies.

    1. How does it comapre to the Nylon's recent release, my dad loves it.

    2. This album should come as a combo with Park, because there's sometimes scary kids at the park.

    3. Don't you think!

    4. The reviewer should have gone into more detail with who the band thanks. I want to know if they are friends with anyone I like.
