Well, we did it. After months of searching for the perfect band for the upcoming entry in the Punknews.org dictionary, we found the winner.

To what word am I referring to, you may ask?

Tatecore.

The Higher is the epitome of tatecore. All the elements are there:

  • A terribly obtuse bandname
  • A singer [who just sings] who is as nasally as any band on Drive-Thru [I'm thinking Something Corporate here]
  • Cheesy song titles like "Story Of Growing Up" and "Couples Skate Only," that leave nothing lyrically to the imagination
  • Lyrics ripped straight from the weepiest of livejournal poetry [sample lines include "Please will you give me one more try", "I just wish you'd believe in me" and the ever-present "don't break my heart / don't say another word"]
  • Overly cliched "emo" background music, sounding like a 4th rate Rufio knockoff with "breakdowns" friendly enough for MTV2 videoplay.

This band is 100% worthless. And even worse, their ugly mugs are plastered in the inside of the case. Every time I open the thing I get an uncontrollable urge to punch these fuckers right in the face. They have no purpose here. They are just the newest set of leeches milking the youth of America for all they're worth.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Higher - a living definition of tatecore.

I completely agree. This band sounds like what a sumo wrestlers dump inside a used nascar tire would smell.

I saw them live and it gave me aids.

Watching them prance around on stage like a bunch of wanna be 16 yr old rock stars was ridiculous. I was embarrassed FOR them. Like when Dj Tanner went to her first day of high school wearing the same outfit as her health teacher or some shit and ended up eating lunch in the phone booth.

I want to call their parents and tell them they fucked up.

Someone needs to send them to the school of punk rock basics. Seriously, where did any of them learn to play their instruments? Especially that sorry excuse for an elf singer.
      whoops!

Cursive are a great band, but they're not nearly as good as Jets To Brazil in both the musical and lyrical department.

This score is for The Higher. What a horrible name; it fits an 80's glam rock band to a tee.

To the guy who thought we were "jealous" and "retarted [sic]"; there is no hatred from me. I'm mostly indifferent. I have fun working on this site, and talking to people and listening to music, end of story. I don't care if there are 5 or 500 other sites, as long as they're doing it for the right reasons.

We have a different scope of coverage than them so I doubt we're "trying" to be anything like them. They have their niche, and that's fine.

      My Score:

it may have been more pedstrian, but i think the album sounded much more honest, and much less contrived, than the ugly organ... i mean, domestica was fucking solid. the ugly organ just screams "filler" to me, with all the half-assed ambient tracks... i mean, some bands can pull off the atmospheric interludes and maintain my interest, but cursive are better when they are just fucking rocking.
"gentleman caller" was a cool song, but very, very cliche. the lyrics are forced...
kasher just seems to bitch about how he puts himself on display, and how fucked it is that people pay to listen to it... i liked it at first, but after the novelty wore off, i pretty much put it in a drawer... in my opinion, it already sounds dated.
domestica took longer to sink it, but i listen to it much more often than any of their other records. i also like "such shining stars," but the production makes it a bit too unnecessarily grating for my tastes. burst and bloom was an amazing ep, and i felt that the ugly organ didn't sufficiently explore the possibilities of the cello... i thought the album was totally pedestrian, calculated in its accessibility, and hmm... whatever.

Posted by Greenvandal on 2003-11-30 12:37:59
      My Score:

Wow. You actually like Domestica? That was seriously one of the most half assed terrible albums I ever heard. I hated Cursive til Burst and Bloom came out. (or was it that split with eastern youth thatcame first? wherever the cello made its debut) Something bout that cello brings out the good in Tims song writing. And are you trying to say that DOmestica actually has ANYTHING on it that hasnt been played 5000 times by some other indie rock hipster?

As Someone from the Higher's hometown, Vegas, and an active part of the music genre out here, I have to say the review can't be more on. I think this band has about four guys who enjoy them, and all four are their friends. Its a fanbase made up completely of girls who want to fuck them because they're cute guys in a band.

I won't even delve into the fact that most of these guys hated punk music and everything related over two years ago. The lead singer is quoted as saying "Music just isn't music with a guitar in it" some time back.

Its amazing what a band can do with Mommy and Daddy's money and with an idea of what will get them laid.

      My Score:

I'm ashamed to admit that I've had a change of heart... My girlfriend left me this morning... She stole my fucking The Criminals shirt.

Anyways, a song from The Higher just happened to come on my radio, perfectly in synch with her exit from my plush studio apartment, and I began to sob. Halfway through the song, however, I felt as if the music were caressing my arms, stroking my thighs, and slowly making its way towards my genitals, soothing me in spite of my oh-so-recent loss.

I put on my stylish Adverts beanie, and frantically galloped towards my local Best Buy. I will now admit to purchasing the entire discography of Homegrown, New Found Glory, and Brand New.

But my spending spree didn't stop there!!! I picked up the latest from Story of the Year, The Kinison, Jamison Parker, and, of course... The Higher. Each song from each band is like an anthem in and of itself, packed with a vibrant new take on the punk rock sneer and swagger from days long past...

As a tribute to my favorite moderator, I also purchased two copies of each Cursive record, with the hopes that each will appreciate in value over the course of the next few years. I intended on selling them and purchasing stock in MCA Records, but the quality and sincerity of the music convinced me to hang on to each of them. Now I have one copy of each record for my moped, and one copy of each record to play while I work over at Wal-Mart.

The music contained on these releases was infinitely more rebellious than any of the punk rock albums of the late '70s, and undoubtedly technically superior to anything from anytime in the 80s. Pop punk has fallen like a brick into the filling bathtub of my heart, and the punk rock of yesteryear was in turn displaced...

I would like to apologize to anyone that I may have hurt with my harsh words and the snobby, elitist attitude that most genuine punk rock bands rejected. I would like to apologize to everyone who's IP ended up blocked because I put them on my list.

I would like to apologize to the many bands that I have upset with my eloquent verbal slandering... The Mars Volta, Blink 182, The Higher... You all know who you are.

Lastly, I would like to apologize to each and everyone of you. Punk rock is not about offending people, it is about embracing the spirit and the excitement of the music... it is helping a strictly independent underdog thrive in the face of "art" sold at a ridiculous mark up. Perhaps most importantly, punk rock is centralized upon the realization that punk rockers, hardcore kids, rude boys, and people who like emo should just unite as a community, consolidate their efforts, and live and die by their ethics and ideals to truly defeat the cash-fueled enterprises that feast upon our scene as if we were a sprout and mustard sandwich, and the cash-fueled enterprise were a starving vegan student at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Anyways, this may be "tatecore" but I love it. I have become a member on the absolutepunk.net message board, and will begin writing columns from the perspective of a fallen punk rock debutante who sacrifices his elitist ways in the pursuit of unity. This will, unfortunately, mark my last posting on this site, with the exception of a few casual supportive comments under bands that successfully translate the emotional upheaval of my life into sound. This score is for The Higher.

Thank you for reading, and please... Have a really Happy Thanksgiving! All of you!

      1. I haven't been listening to anything but Tatecore for three years

      2. Don't you tink their hoodiecore influences really show through

      3. And cardigancore

      4. What do neo-liberals tihnk of this album? If they like it, it's probably not a communist record

      5. Like that other one

Scott, you summed up what everyone in Las Vegas has been thinking since they 1st heard this band. Then they were known as September Star but they blew just as hard. I've HAD to see this band many times and every time I get that uncontrollable urge to run right up to to the stage and punch them in the face. They do somehow have really hot girlfriends though.
They are all super huge deuchbags too.

This review was fucking hilariuous, but a foolish move in my belief. Tate is just going to link this review in his news section (between posts chronicling what he ate for lunch and new merch from Slick Shoes). Now we may just have to witness an onslaught from his defensive and narrow-minded fanbase. The "pro Blink-182 but anti-MTV corporate bullshit" type.
