Published on December 23rd 2003 Grindcore has to be one of the most polarizing genres of music out there. Some people love it; others cringe whenever they hear it. Discordance Axis surely made quite a few people cringe during their almost 10 year career, but they also developed a fiercely loyal fan base, and it’s not hard to see why. “The Inalienable Dreamless” was Discordance Axis’ final full-length, as they called it quits in 2001, but they certainly didn’t go out quietly. “The fastest band in the world” flies through 17 tracks on here with the kind of blinding speed that is sure to keep your attention. After all, a momentary lapse might cause you to miss a song. Vocalist Jon Chang shows no concern for his own well being, or the well being of the listener’s ears as he shrieks his lungs out like the product of some sort of botched exorcism. But the real star of the show, at least in my opinion is drummer Dave Witte. Some of you may know Dave from Burnt by the Sun, but before that, Dave was abusing the skins with Discordance Axis. Witte’s drumming is nothing short of amazing, with mind blowing speed, insane blastbeats, and the sort of robotic precision that makes you question his humanity. The guitar work, provided by Rob Marton showcases an ingenuity and creativity that isn’t easily matched. It’s been a couple years since DA was forced to call it quits (Marton suffered from a condition that made him extremely sensitive to loud noises, which as you might imagine, put a slight damper on things), but they still reign as the kings of grind. If you’re a fan of loud, fast, and aggressive music that challenges convention and makes you think, you need to get your hands on this. I guess what first got me into grindcore was the sheer intensity of the music and the endurance of the drummers. It gets really old fast if there is no innovation in the mix. Bands like HeWhoCorrupts and Pig Destroyer make it worth sitting through an entire CD/LP worth of material. This is probably one of the best grind CDs ever. Technical guitar/drums, searing vocals/doom vocals, and Evangelion references make this golden. The DVD is equally headache inducing as well. I heard the mp3 and immediately started laughing when the vocals came in. That's rediculous. Non registered people can submit reviews. Everything gets posted (eventually). review some crossed out and lack of interest... please scum....ah yes classic stuff from the godfathers of grind. I won't deny that this guitarist's technique differs from the majority of grind players... But still I don't see the point of listening to non-political noise... These guys are a great band for what they are. Grind is one of those dumb little subgenres where all the bands sound so much alike that the tiniest exceptions from the rules means instant recognition in the scene. I gonna agree with BSD. This shit is all speed and endurance. I gave it a whirl and didnt find it to be very creative...and even if it was, shit goes by too fast and is covered up by that guys terrible "vocals" to hear them. If grind bands started trying to branch there sound out a bit (like someone actually attempting real vocals, instead of the easy way out- screaming. I know that sounds ridiculous, but anything is possible in music) This band is a bit different BSD, DA's music is actually quite creative, especially when put up against other bands playing this style. Grind is only deemed complicated because it's so fast. The chords themselves are very simple. The only grind I could see anybody listening to for pleasure would be UK crusty bands like Extreme Noise Terror... I listen to it all the time, I enjoy it. It makes my dog hide behind the couch, so it is even mightier than the vacuum cleaner! power to the grindcore maniacs, but honestly, what the fuck? does anyone actually listen to that for aural value, or do they just marvel at the musicianship aspect? i don't fucking know. sorry. 40, excellent choice for review material. This CD smokes. Dave Witte is beyond nuts. Yes!!!! The original sound version CD collection on Hydra Head is really good as well. I haven't heard this album, but the collection of singles, 7"s and compilation tracks was well worth the money I spent. wow, pn.org posting reviews like this? holy shit that is fast. amazing. i need to find me some more of this. well i can get into some hardcore stuff but this isnt really my cup o' tea. but these guys get all 5 stars for their speed. fuck thats fast... |
