Consider this the "lost" Get Up Kids album, if you will. Somewhere in between the sugar high if Something To Write Home About and the alt-country leanings of the wholly underappreciated [and absolutely dynamite when performed live] On A Wire, the Get Up Kids apparently recorded Guilt Show. While this really isn't true, the idea fits - the band took the best parts of what their fans loved and mixed it with the best parts of what they themselves loved, and they ended up with Guilt Show. this album started as a boring shitfest and eventually grew on me over the last three or four years.. This is the first Get Up Kids i've heard and i don't like it. Too soft and poppy....i'll give it a few more listens. maybe my opinion will change. nearly too much of pop., but nice to listen it with my girlfriend *hehe* I'm devastated that 'Send us a Saint' was left off the album, because it kicks ass. You'd think they would've learned after'Campfire Kansas' (the best song off of On A Wire). You all may think this album is great and all, but once you see them play it live, you really start to understand how lackluster it really is. They had no passion for any of the new material and they played 'Is There a Way Out?' so they could take a break. I like these guys, but the only reason to go to their show is for Rocky and Recover. Is it just me or does it seem as though everyone and thier fucking mother love The Get Up Kids these days? I love this album, it blew me away from the first listen. I know Scott seems to like it when bands change and experiment, so of course he's not as crazy about this (since he's correct in describing it as a grab bag of what the band does best already). But if you like good melodies and the usual killer GUK lyrics ... BUY. This is a place to critize music, I bet that guy never talks in real life. get up kid in anger...wow I´m afraid you get up wanker This album was good but not great. At times it felt like it was dragging along...like as if the band was really feeling it but when the audience hears it theye almost feel tempted to just go to the next track. Still quality music though and I love it. An interesting thought- there are a lot of indie record stores. There is no need to try and mention them all. Please stop. Your mother sucks for $18 Dont know where you guys buy your cds but Get up Kids suck anyway dont care if they suck for 6 or 18 dollars ok, FYI, the reason the album sounds like it was recorded at the same time as STWHA is because they share the same producer Ed Rose. ok, FYI, the reason the album sounds like it was recorded at the same time as STWHA is because they share the same producer Ed Rose. criminal records in atlanta has a pretty good selection but a little out of my price range. brave new world in pittsburgh is the shit. its located right in the middle of the pitt off campus housing area, they have all kinds of good shit and bands can play there on fridays, mine is next month beyatches Yawn. More like the Sit Down Kids. Newbury Comics has a really good used CD selection. fucking capitalize each sentence. fuck you greg. i'll fucking school you bitch! oh yea, and as for greg1234 or whatever, i feel using proper grammer is a waste of time. also, no label that is small wants to stay small like someone said. its fucking business, asian man is selling all they can. it doesnt make them bad people, but i'm sure they still have marketing plans etc. to stay afloat. they wouldnt be around if they were just breaking even. fuck diging in he has no pee pee. i find asshat to be very insulting to my ass and my hat. as for dick, i think the song is very homophobic, like why are you calling me a male extremity, do you fear the penis? and anyone named richard is soooo demeaned when you use their nickname so derogetorily. you don't need to go by rick! stand up for yourselves. There's some serious latent homophobia and gay bashing going on with mr. poopypants. In case you haven't heard, calling people "gay" in a derogatory fashion is slandering to those homosexuals who read this site. Please keep your rude comments to yourself, and stick to calling people "dicks" and "asshats". Vagrant and Drive Thru are both on the boycott-riaa.com boycott list, so I assume their less indie than No Idea and Deep Elm. Just because indie labels know how to market and stuff does not mean that they aren't indie, they just have a few tricks up their sleeve due to their size. can someone tell me how to get to the secret link on this cd To Poopypants, Vagrant (on their defunct message board) and Drive-thru both say something along the lines of "We are an indie label!" All I was saying was that if you are 49% owned by Interscope in the case of Vagrant or your are funded by Geffen in the case of Drive-thru, you're really not an independent label. Also, both of those labels play major label games, such as these price drops through major chain stores that everyone is very fond of among other stunts (ie. having the starting line rerecord their ep because DT thought it wouldn't sell well or vagrant racking up enormous costs on the Vagrant America tour for frivilous expenses). These labels take a loss on every $5.99 cd so they can get strong first week sales, make it onto the billboard 100 chart, and thus get added to radio playlists. This is smart business and makes music affordable for me so i'm not complaining at all. I just pointed out that these labels are not indie labels. Nothing more and nothing less. sorry for wasting your time. Greg, Carver used sentence fragments all the time. Relax. They're fine. Mr. pooppants, your serious nickname implies your serious comment. A few good songs makes it an improvement over their last album. It still isn't near as good as Something To Write Home About. I consider this album a disappointment just like their last one. Drive thru is owned by MCA...and since a few of the bands on vagrant have hit it big, the major label dollars go to them to help market their bands better(mostly by labels hoping to buy out vagrant and further exploit it.)...I know vagrant isnt owned by a major, but TVT and vagrant get some of the big funding for sure. Because major labels now see what the kids are going nuts over, and that is the whole emo explosion, and the big labels want in on all they can get their greedy hands on. guk suck...they fuckin suck ass....lame shit lame shit i guess in the end, if any of your bands have any success outside of a small circle of pretentious art fags, you are not an indy label anymore. you have to be like deep elm and make sure none of your bands are good enough to get big followings, cuz if they do, all the little art fags can't claim the label/bands as their own little secret.meanwhile deep elm would kill for the success drive thru has. its a fucking business. deep elm wants to make money to. so does no idea. i think people are just gay kirby. also both labels distribute their cd's through a major. as far as i'm concerned thats just smart business. and i guess drive thru is a 'feeder' for the majors, like the minor legues and bands can get called up like NFG. that also just seems like good business.i see nothing wrong with it. so you give a major some cash to help you get your shit out. as far as i know, both labels still sign bands w/o any influence from the majors. i've also heard drive thru are dicks, ie. the whole midtown fight/losing dashboard to vagrant but whatever, i odn't see that has to do with what music they put out. The music is pretty straitforward, but nice. the best part of this cd is all the demos and be sides you get when you put it in your computer. Way to make a cd woth your $$! And for the record...Vagrant isn't an indie label. Neither is Drive-thru. yea gotta say the weakerthans are extremely overrated, along with that dudes old band, propaghandi. to the guy who was "pressured" to by the Weakerthans album This music is for polacks, wops, heebs, and spics! ok rich egan, have your street teamers post how cool everyone is that works for you. thatll get you so much cred. Your all wasting my time-oldpunker- $5.99 at best buy makes this the best cd ever. not really. Crap. this weekend i sold a bunch of cds. i hate when the local record store guy stands there looking through them and then looking back at you like "what the fuck were you thinking when you bought this turd". i mean i know it's a fucking turd, that's why i'm selling the damn thing. wtf?!?! it's even worse when some of the turds you are selling are so bad that they won't even buy them from you. i mean just give me a buck store credit for billy idol's greatest hits and let me leave with my dignity somewhat in tact. Once this employee at HMV pressured me to buy the new Weakerthans and I did and I later found it to be mediocre to the point where I sold it the next week and bought myself a Denali shirt with the money I got back from the place where I sold it. don't like getting snickered at for asking about a Ben Folds CD at the counter. I knew the girl whose mom owned the store and she would always give me shit for going to Best Buy, and my response was, "if you want to be an indie store, Best Buy shouldn't have a better indie selection, and your employees shouldn't make smart ass remarks about what customers are buying." Good indie stores will always stay in business no matter what Walmart and Best Buy are doing. Smart business minds will always have a niche in the marketplace. i don't get why everyone is bitching about buying cd's, when you can download them for free on the net. suckers! hah, I used to work at the downtown Toronto Tower. Hmm, some indie stores are evidently better than others, we have a pretty good one here, the CDs are 4-8 used and 11-14 new with a somewhat random selection, but varied enough to find something cool (I think they use No Idea distro too). The chains sell CDs for 15-19 (Best Buy's a bit cheaper) and are a better place to look for something specific. You guys are all wrong. The best chain store is A&B Sound. I just wish they had them in Ontario. The Tower Records in downtown Toronto was pretty good when it was around too. Fuck HMV. yeah, t-rav is right. you should give into the culture and support indie stores regardless of the price because it's the "punk" thing to do. best buy must be evil because they are a corporation. Agreed with the guy below, No Idea mail order is top notch. Vagrant may not be very indie anymore but the people who work there are still cool as shit....so what if they wanted to make more money they still stay true to their roots... And for the record...Vagrant isn't an indie label. Neither is Drive-thru. It's attitudes and loyalties like that to big chain stores like best buy that keep them thriving...you need to learn to buy true independent music...independently. this score is for best buy. selection, price, convenience, lack of pretention/elitism. even if i want an older cd, i'd rather order it from bestbuy.com because they don't charge for shipping and handling. Sure dude, oneday you'll realize that sprawl is a very bad thing and once all the other electronic stores go out of business, Best Buy will have no reason to keep their prices low. Did I spell "Indie" wrong, or is it either way? Also working in Best Buy's favor: Best Buy has older albums from bands like My Bloody Valentine, Modest Mouse, Belle and Sebastian and that sort all for like $15 To the guy below... Yea I'm pretty tired of Vagrant and Drive-thru acting like they are indies. Sure Vagrant is distributed by an indie but if you are part owned by Interscope and play major label games, then you ain't an indie. Not that I really care but it's definitely a misconception. "Cursive and Bright Eyes are on Saddle Creek, just about the least indie of indies. " too bad online distro catalogues is where its at. and no-idea's mail order fucking rocks. Best Buy is good for new releases. When it comes to old releases I would look at ebay and all that good stuff as BB seems to jack up the price to the $15.99 range. If it's not to be found on ebay, or the likes, then I would just go to the label's online site. Follow up question: I don't think Best Buy carries Deep Elm. I was just there today and they had basically a whole row dedicated to Beloved though, and that surprised me. Not a bad review, I probably would have given it an 8 though. I personally, think On a Wire is a great cut from the get up kids. It really took a long time but I eventually learned to love it. I think it's safe to say that with this one, the GUK boys have finally found their formula. Good work. I'm sorry Scott, but the songs from On a Wire were most certainly not better live. They were extremely boring. I remember when the GUK were actually a half decent live band. Ahhh... those were the days. no mr. pretentious emo fuck. sorry i confused my labels. no fag is gonna play acoustic shows there and no store clerk is gonna jack off with you over your joan of arc collection. they do carry a hell of alot more indy stuff than you think and have better prices than indy stores, but you might wanna keep your art school ass at your indy store so you can continue to bolster your holier than thou ego and bloated sense of music awareness and pretention. deep elm has to be the worst sad bastard emo fag music i have ever heard. the end. Cursive and Bright Eyes are on Saddle Creek, just about the least indie of indies. best buy carries a lot of indie stuff. if you can get a credit card somehow, buying online is good if best buy doesnt have it. here's food for thought, why would I want to support a cd store that charges me more, just so they can continue charging more. theres a few good indie shops where the prices are reasonable, but best buy just has great prices. yes they do i got cursive and bright eyes there. i don't listen to much deep elm but i've gotten some serious underground shit there. its funny though, its hit or miss Does Best Buy carry releases from Jade Tree and Deep Elm? I went to my local indie store yesterday and the CD was 12.99. There is no way in hell I am spending twice as much as I can at Best Buy. Besides, anyone who knows anything about indie stores knows they make the most money off of used CD sales. If you really want to go support them, trade in some old CDs and buy some used ones. I myself live in a community with a bunch of rich as fuck kids and they're STILL going to go to Best Buy and save themselves fifteen bucks. 'Matt Pryor couldnt write a bad song if he tried' indy stores would sellout in a second. "Wow, is everyone buying their cds at Best Buy now? This may sound cliche and petty but support your local record stores. They could use the business and support of the local scenes a lot more than Best Buy and Sam Goody. Just a thought..." I guess you could also be considered an idiot if you say "your" instead of "you're"... I'm not too big on grammar Your an idiot if you paid 14.00 dollars more to keep your local record stores going. It's 5.99. this is for my local independent store. they never get anything in unless you pre order it. and then it always costs 18 bucks. i'll continue to buy my cds at concerts and best buy. "i love the art work too. who puts lyrics in traycard." Wow, is everyone buying their cds at Best Buy now? This may sound cliche and petty but support your local record stores. They could use the business and support of the local scenes a lot more than Best Buy and Sam Goody. Just a thought... this album its great. i love the art work too. who puts lyrics in traycard. awesome job! 5.99. wow. I'm buying this for sure! But where are the kids? :( Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz-oldpunker two lack luster releases in a row. this is ok at best...they have lost their edge. this sounds like "college rock." i could see them opening for the Goo Goo Dolls with this material. Not impressed... hmm, i think i still like on a wire and stwha better but this is still good. some duds, some real outstanding ones. theyve come a long way musically, there is alot going on instrumentally. but the closer is a dud compared to hanna hold on. prob. won't make my top ten or anything like on a wire did, but its still good, its worth it if your a fan. the review is pretty much dead on. Best Buy has this for $5.99 (well at least in Chicago). i've had this album for three months now... thank you irc's... and i really do like it when i listen to it, but i'm hard pressed to remember anything about it when i'm not listening to it. and i agree that on a wire is best performed live, so maybe guilt show will go from a 7 to a 10 for me next time i see them play. as far as the band evolving or de-evolving as the case may be, who cares... i mean i love four minute mile alot (a real lot) but if all thier albums sounded like it i'd have been bored with them a long time ago. Awesome review. I got this album a few days early at Bestbuy thanks to the idiots who forgot to put a street date on it...and the review really covers the CD. It's the best from On a Wire and STWHA. And since I was a huge fan of the latter, and not so keen on "On a Wire," I found myself loving this CD, simply because the GUK i loved were back. Kinda. This album is nothing compared to STWHA. But GUK fans will love it. how much is best buy selling this for? I agree with Frank Four-Fingers. "they merely wrote enough old-sounding songs to please their core fanbase while still trying to expand their musical horizons to keep themselves happy in concert." i know the release date was march 2nd, but i picked this up from best buy (i know im not a HARDCORE INDIE kid rite) on feb 25th, clearly a week before it was released. either they pushed the relase date up or the person who stcoks shit is a complete retard. works for me though. pure crap....get up kids suck ass with all due fairness, this might be the least good album the band has put out. like scott implied (sorry if i'm misinterpreting him) the band's other albums were distinct and almost epitomized a sound that others tried to emulate. i wish it was more like 'on a wire' that album ruled. Scott, great review. "And also going off the subject the best album of the year so far is Circle Takes The Square's debut. Trust me you won't be dissapointed if you get on down to the store to pick it up." is everyone also forgetting how fucking awesome their current tour's bill is? Okay. Fair enough. Let's hug. They are ants Michael, they are ants!!! the cover art is shit, but the cd isn't half bad. seeing them next weekend. i actually found myself enjoying this record for a couple weeks...i'd never liked the get up kisd before, but it was really fun and catchy I like this album. My first reaction was "awww man its not gonna sound like ON A WIRE (WHICH I WILL FUCKING DEFEND AND CHERISH TIL THE DAY I DIE!) Its a solid album. Lietunant and others: this score is for their hilarious acronym this record is brilliant. where on a wire was better and more mature then STWHB, Guilt Show is the bands best record to date. Matt Pryor couldnt write a bad song if he tried this album is fantastic. second best, but fantastic. I really enjoy this album, but especially "Is There A Way Out"...it might stick out like a sore thumb, but it just pushes this certain dark mood through really well...good review too, tells it almost exactly how it is. ...I really, really, wish one day I would spend the time to post just ONE comment without a slew of spelling and grammatical errors. I love how people like to comment on an album but suggesting to people other records that they personally think are better. The bands that you have mentioned, Greg, are not providing the same type of music and atmosphere as the Get Up Kids; it is silly to recommend them as this is different music. Replaced the word "emo" with any other word of combination of words preferred, but the Get Up Kids lean towards that sound and trend while the bands you listed do not. So it's just providing the impression, "Here are bands I listen to that are better than this band you like." I thought that this album was a lot better than On a Wire because I desperately wanted another pop punk offering. Sympathy is by far my favorite song. It has a groove which I can't say is found as easily in other songs on the album. Overall I'm glad I purchased this album. I think it will get some people to think twice and give it a listen. I like to just pop this in the car on a long drive and just go. Good job guys thanks for the tunes. i personally love this album, and think it's one of their best. it hasn't left my cd player in weeks. greg6711, however, Holy Roman is an excellent song. i feel bad saying this, but i am simply not feeling this album. i loved 4 minute mile. i loved something to write home about. i loved on a wire. why would the band go write a style of music that they really didnt want to go back to? this is a digression in the world of the Get Up Kids. instead of expanding their horizons they are basically dumbing themselves down and taking steps backwards. just because the kids want you to change doesnt mean you have to. will any of those kids even care about this record in 2 years? GUK, write what you want. people can tell when a band is doing what they want and it always ends up better. Yes, No Jim angers me as well, seeing how "Ten Minutes" and "Campfire Kansas" are excellent songs. Also, I feel that this is the first GUK disc to leave a bad taste because of the closing track. All their other cds, even "Eudora" had a fantastic closing song. Overall great effort but comes a little short and it's obvious that they were trying to please everyone and not really focused on making a coherent record. "Sympathy" is my favorite song. THE GET UP KIDS i don't think you can compare the getup kids to straight indie rock since they also have an emo influence. i'm so excited that this is out I understand this is fullfilling those fond memories of your precious Get Up Kids, I played this about 3 times since I bought it and I must say...I'm pretty happy w/ it. There will never be another "Something To Write Home About". Hopefully there will never be another "On a Wire". But seriously the reviewer hit the nail on the head...the band is definitely trying to satisfy their hardcore fans with some songs that sound like they are from the "Something..." sessions. With that said they are still incorporating the "One the Wire" piano backgrounds. I think it mixes both well. I loved Something To Write Home About, I loved On A Wire and so far I love this. i like this cd a lot more than on a wire. it's good. Get Up kids... This is one of the best reviews I have ever read. Period. I love the album too. A definite improvement over On A Wire. I personally love this album, but totally agree with the review- but my bias towards the Get Up Kids clouds my ability to really rate the album. It's the new sound of College Rock! WEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! My favorite album by these guys was "Something To Write Home About," and I guess I just didn't get "On A Wire." |
