I arrived early for this concert sponsored by Volcom. The initial two bands were local bands competing in a so-called competition "Volcom Joust" sort of thing. They were competing for a travel trailer. The bands were Forensik and Jenix. Both bands reminded me of the new wave of awful screamo bands. I sat at the side and waited impatiently for the agony to end. I could tell you something about them if they actually sounded good. Think of a sound similar to "The Used" with more off-tune screaming.

The third band was the band Before Today(formerly Early Times) which signed to Equal Vision records earlier this year. I am convinced these guys have a ton of talent but they still sound awful to me. The lead singer's voice is decent but I hate the way the guy screams. This is not a band I like.

Finally , after a long wait Guttermouth came on to the stage and put on an absolutely mindblowing performance. I've never been a big fan of their music but they were absolutely amazing. They started by asking "Which of the first bands was worst?" and then answered the question themselves. They then went on about how they didnt do screamo, they were a punk rock band. Now to the music, an amazing performance filled with a lot of the older stuff(Didnt hear much if anything from Gusto). Crowd spit on singer and he spit back while taunting the "little shit"(his words). The energy in the performance was the best I have seen in a long time and in a room with around 2000 people, it was amazing. I'm not good with song names for Guttermouth so I wont attempt to butcher the setlist. All I know is the performance left me in anticipation of hearing them again on the Warped Tour.

Rise Against came on a few minutes after Guttermouth finished and put on a good performance although I wasnt that impressed with their new guitar player. The played a wide variety of songs including a few they have never played live before. I've seen them quite of few times and it was just as good as I remembered. This is the set list as I remember it(in no order, may miss a song or two) and I'll comment on the two new songs. Black Masks and Gasoline, Heaven Knows, Like the Angel, Voices off Camera, Blood-Red White and Blue, Broken English, Alive and Well, My Life Inside Your Heart, Six Ways till Sunday, Everchanging, 1000 Good Intentions, The Art of Losing, Give It All(New song off Rock Against Bush Comp), "Destination Anywhere From You" (song from the new album, name wasnt given but this was the chorus line) The song from the new album was a little slower and not one of my favorites of the night (still showed off Tim's amazing voice) but "Give it All" sounded amazing. Overall, a great job done by the two headliners.

guttermouth are great. catch 22 is the cheasy kind of unoriginal ska that ruined the scene.

I don't give a flying fuck what you guys listen to. I fucking hate screamo but I not going to talk shit about you guys if you like it. Listen to what ever you want!!!!

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, May 6, 2004 at 5:12 PM (EDT)
    My Score:

Guttermouth is awesome. As many line-up changes as they have gone through over the years, they still put on an amazing show.

From what I remember, G-Mouth played (in no particular order): The second song was Baker's Dozen, Lipstick, 123Slam, Bruce Lee vs KISS Army, Lucky the Donkey, Derek, She's Got the Look, End on 9, Do the Hustle, and closed with Perfect World. They played a few more I can't remember.

They played 2 new songs (one which they opened with which rarely happens) and I can honestly say they are going back to their old sound (Friendly People style). SO I am excited for the new album.

Rise Against was rusty cause it was their first show with a new guitarist and their first show out of the studio. Their new album will be insane.

what's with the catch 22 - guttermouth debate thats not about which one sucks more now. i say catch 22 since they had one incredible cd and 3(or 2ep's and 2 lp's) that took it balls deep. their live shows were ok but if the crowd wasn't really into it, the show kinda sucked sometimes. guttermouth however put out a few good cds and only about one and a half terrible ones, and put on some great live shows for a long time and, from what i hear, are trying to bring it back these days. in my mind c22 is definately the lesser of the bands.

This fuels my hate for the band, and I'm known to kinda go off on kids who pull that shit... Score's for your post though...

    >_> How can you pass judgement onto someone for liking a band... any band at all. It's not like he said he's the dopest, most hardcore punk to ever roam the planet. Hell, if someone liked Simple Plan here (although I shudder at the mear mention of the name) I'd let them do their own thing. If he criticised other bands, that's his opinion and so what? Does what he think affect me in any way? No! Just get over it. Someone insulted a band you liked and now you're going to pull a double standard and try to down theirs'?

If someone insulted Against Me! (my fav. band) I'd let it slide. Nothing they can say will ever make me feel another way about that band because I know that I enjoy it and everyone else can fuck off.

Hmmm, so in your crazy world, when a band comes out with a new cd, the Punk Police go around to everyones house, and take away their old cd, and replace it with the new one, so now they must only listen to Dinosaur Sounds, and never Keasbey Nights? Damn, thats one fucked up society...

(this idea has been copywrited by me, so that I can make it into a real movie, where I shall cast the members of the Casualties, where they will start riots every day, and proclaim that listening to older cds is "FOR THE PUNX!!!!." Then, Saves The Day comes in, and says that there's nothing wrong with not being able to listen to older cds, because then people would find out how unoriginal and shitty they are. Then, in the closing scenes, Lifetime gets back together, kicks down the gate to the city, and proceds to kick the shit out of Saves The Day for ripping off their sound, and the Casualties, just because they suck, and then play a never-ending show in the middle of the city. The End!)

    Best. Movie. Ever

Ohh ya, and you're a joke for liking Guttermouth at all. Fool.

I was all into the fact that guttermouth was advertised on the commercial for the "underground comedy movie" dvd on sale starring michael clarke duncan. What an awful, awful movie.
