This album is hands down cemented permanently in my Top Ten records of ever. From the first time you hear those intercut samples from kung-fu movies and the Rza's beats with "Bring tha motherfuckin' ruckus!" shouted over it, 36 Chambers becomes musical heroin. This album is the true epiphany of great beats mixed with some of the most intelligent street rhymes ever spat.

Rza's beats on this album are a marriage of old samples and extra add-ins, like snaps and choruses of the ODB (as he was still known at this time) singing out gibberish. The end product is something that's banging, but soft enough to feature the lyrics. The best part about this album is that every word said is worth being said and is set up to be heard. That's the problem with rap music these days, you've got Lil' Jon crankin' out something on 5 Casio keyboards so loud that you can't even hear anyone saying anything except "Get low!"

What's so worth hearing, you ask me? I'll tell you what:
"Gunnin, hummin comin atcha/First I'm gonna getcha, once I gotcha, I gat-cha/ You could never capture the Method Man's stature"

"Razor sharp, I sever the head from the shoulders, I'm better than my competta, you mean competitor, whadeva!"

"Raw I'm a give it to ya, with no trivia/
Raw like cocaine straight from Bolivia/
My hip-hop will rock and shock the nation/
like the Emancipation Proclamation/
Weak MC's approach with slang that's dead/
you might as well run into the wall and bang your head/
I'm pushin' force, my force your doubtin'/
I'm makin' devils cower to the Caucus Mountains"

Trust me, this album will make you dance and bob your head. As an album, it's perfectly constructed mixing between choice tracks and intercut kung-fu movie lines. "A game of chess, is like a sword fight. You must think fist, before you move." "Shaolin shawdoboxing...and the Wu-Tang sword style...if what you say is true, the Shaolin and the Wu-Tang could be dangerous. Do you think your Wu-Tang sword can defeat me?" "En garde, I'll let you try my Wu-Tang style."

Other references in the lyrics include, but are not limited to: Waco, Texas; Voltron; Jacque Cousteu; Richard Dawson and the Family Feud; Beetle Bailey; The New York Times; Good Morning Vietnam. The Wu-Tang Clan have created a piece of literature in the way they constructed this album, presenting a nonstop barrage of pop-culture and worldly events in one concise, 13 track package.

If you don't own this album, what the fuck have you been doing with the past eleven years of your life? Buy it now, bitches!

Kanye is overrated but hey he's a bit of light in a dark alley so maybe someone can finally pick up the trash and clean up. What would we do without Wu Tang, because I have no clue.

"I don't get how anyone can take a group that has its own fucking clothing brand seriously"

Why not? Doesnt every band have its own line of clothing? granted, it might just be their logo on a hanes tshirt, but that is still clothing, that has the band name on it, and the profits go straight to the band. So I guess you take no band that has its own tshirts serious. Man I guess you only like moronic bands who don't see the money in merchandise. Having your own clothing line, like MADE or Atticus or Sean John is just expanding the same idea as bands like avail , dillenger 4, or any other non seroius (i guess) bands have of selling shirts for money w/ their name on it. Its just having more money to expand on the idea and make more than just shirts w/ your band name on it. Some people like to create clothing and design it for fun and their is money in it if you succeed and have the money to get it off the ground. just thought i'd point out your ignorance.

Haha. When did gay rights not get filed under 'politics'?

For the first time I have to protest against a record being reviewed on this site. Hip-hop does have a lot in common with punk. But Wu-Tang Clan hasn't.

Quite possibly the most overrated rap album of all time. Common's "Like Water for Chocolate", Talib Kweli's "Quality", Mos Def's "Black on Both Sides", Kanye's "College Dropout", Nas' "Illmatic", Eric B and Rakim's... well any album by them, Jurassic 5's "Power in Numbers", Jay Z's "Reasonable Doubt" and "Black Album" and J-Kwon's "Hood Hop" (ok that ones a joke) are what real rap is about. This was good for its time but has become outdated.

I totally agree. The 3rd line of the song begins with 'My Hip-hop' which should be self explanitory. The last thing that this group is, is punk. Being open-minded would be writing about groups like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan (they are posers and mainstream in my opinion). This definitely wasn't open-mindedness. It was just ridiculous.

Since when did Kayne West's music become so previlant and ground breaking? Ive seen his videos on MTV or whatever and put the closed captioning on(i have a hard time understanding rappers lyrics) and they are about as thought provoking as a NOFX cd. The guy is an egomaniac and is an awful lyricist. Not to mention hes from Chicago or something and does the stupid lengthing of ere's.....

I dont like rap but I still think Coolio's Gangstas Paradise is one of the best rap singles of the last 10-15 years, if not THE BEST.

Unlike a lot of artists who get to where are by putting out a single track that get's countless spins on the radio only to have no lasting value, he actually puts out something of idiosyncrasy and meaning to at least himself.

Wow, I do believe your a complete and total douchebag. Who the fuck are you to say what punk is and what it isnt? Its not like Dave came right and said that punk was a mindset, yet you still find the the need to rise to the defense of your superficial opinionation. Yes, punk rock is a genre, but hey, did it ever occur to you that perhaps punk rock is just that, PUNK rock, because of a certain ideaology. Hell, what one considers punk is a personal preference. Theres no need to jump and attack anyone else's interpretation of the movement just because your perception varies from theirs.

And whether Wu-Tang Clan are punk or not, its quite obvious that there are many readers here who enjoy their music. So maybe they're more "punk" than you think. Unless of course, punk rock really IS just a close-minded genre of fast music with a superiority complex.

"Kanye West ain't bad, but he's got nothing on The Roots or Mos Def."

Of course he doesn't, you're talking about two of the greatest hip-hop acts around, Kanye is just better when compared to the Lil' Johns, Petey Pablos and Ludacris of the world.

they took underground hip hop to the masses via a major label in 1993 the same way green day took pop punk to the masses via a major label in 1994. that's what gives.

    My Score:

Wu-Tang hasn't aged well. This album is only classic as an artifact of the mid-90s... not as a genre defining (or even plain old kick ass) record. Plus, while I support this website featuring reviews of indie and punk-related music, Wu-Tang is major label rap. What gives?

Yeah, Kanye West is really good, a bit overexposed as of late, i'm also really impressed by Jay-Z's "Black Album", i was never really a fan of his stuff prior, other than a few tracks off "Hard Knock Life"!

I love this album, one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever recorded! Back when it first came out I was in one of my "I hate hip hop" phases in high school, but, now, it's up there with albums like, "Fresh Fuit for Rotting Vegetables", "Waiting For THe Sun", "Rubber Soul","EP/LP", Static Age" "straight outta compton" "It takes a nation of millions to hold us back" etc....in my top tenty of all time.

"It's really like comparing NoFX to New Found Glory. I mean, they both play punk music, right?"

Rather, 13 year olds who hang around at the skate shop think they play punk music.

There's a big difference between Wu-Tang and Nelly. It's really like comparing NoFX to New Found Glory. I mean, they both play punk music, right? There's a bold line between hip-hop, and trash.

I agree 100% with this review. Its funny, I was just thinking today how overatted Jay-Z is compared to anything from the early 90's. People talk like the Black Album is something revolutionary or unique. To me, its just mediocre. The real good stuff is from the early 90's. when the rappers weren't concerned with having their own clothing lines or night clubs. Wu-Tang killa bees fo-eva.
