I am a fan of the Ghost. Well, that's putting it lightly - I love the Ghost. I believe I've seen the band at least a half-dozen times in support of their 2002 album This Is A Hospital. I completely adored their unique take on post-rock/hardcore. I even made them my MP3 of the Week a few years ago. Please login or register to post comments. worst revue ever wrote on punk news This review isn't particularly accurate and this album is pretty damn good. And while different, at least as good as their first album. The first time I put this cd in I skipped every track. I had already heard a lot of the songs, but on first listen they were very harsh on this version of recording. I've seen the Ghost three days in a row before, and I can tell you they are never the same. Depending on their level of inebreation and various other factors. I have never seen Brian Moss sing a song the same. So I expected this cd to be different. Later on I gave this cd another chance and really got into it. i disagree with this review. i've also beena fan of the ghost for some time. i think this album is much more developed than "this is a hospital." the guitar tracks in "mad max was an amateur" and "banished and loving it" are very well done, and very impressive. i can't think of another band out there now that has a similar style to the ghost, that can pull it off so well. the lyrics on this album are amazing, they are thought out and have great depth. if you cant appreciate a band's growth and maturing, that should not be reason to say "this stinks." if you cant comprehend the lyrics that should not be reason to say "this stinks." i've read similar reviews for example of Brand New's "deja entendu", and how bad it was because it was nothing like "your favorite weapon". if you want, and expect a band to stagnate and stay exactly the same, you shouldn't wait for new albums, and you should not be reviewing music. I appreciate the fact that you enjoy a lot of what I've created. However, I have no plans to cater to your tastes. Progression is an entirely natural process; if you feel as though I'm moving in the wrong direction so be it, maybe I'm falling off, maybe I'm branching out. On another note, I'm a bit dissatisfied that you'd refer to me or anyone else as "bang for your buck". Regardless of your intentions, some people may feel comodified by a line like that. Next time around just download the album and keep your change. Yeah, i say this bad boy of an album in average atleast. Speaking as a fan who's been listening ever since Brian was in the Wunder Years, I used to be that every damn song Brian put his talent in I automatically could rock out to.whether it was the Wunder Years, Trust Foundation, or the Ghost. As of late though, It sounds like Brian has been slacking off a bit. Sure this new album pushes the envelope but at what cost. Personally, i think anyone could push the envelope but it takes real talent to still make it rock hard. I agree w/ the reviewer, 9 tracks but I can seriously only listen to maybe 3 or 4 of them. I used to get a lot more bang our of my buck from Moss, but i think he's suffering from rock boredom. And for some reason, I have a problem w/ "The Ghost" performing an "Exorcism". Maybe it's just me. Brian, if you read this, bring back the "Crush Fatal", the "Groundswell", "the 45th parallel", the "By The Books", just please don't continue "the skin we shed has stories to tell"!! Its a waste of your talents i thought that a 5 was the highest rating, cause i didn't pay any attention to the 'album score.' i wrote the last 'review' and i obviously feel that it's a 10. rock. it's just odd how everyone's opinion of this album is the total opposite of the person who reviewed it. i couldn't agree with these people more. writing quality music shouldn't be based on time or how long it took for them to get it out. it was a long wait for it to finally be able to purchase, but it was much worth the wait. they replaced half of their band in between their first release, this is a hospital, and this pen is a weapon, which is one of the hardest tasks a band faces. honestly, i did think it was partially weak the first couple times through, but the more you listen to it, you can't help but to not grasp onto, at least, the majority of the tracks. i guess some reviews just don't take certain aspects into consideration. props to everyone who thinks this album is rockin, while also having some balls with the experimental things they used. thanks. This album is great. The review doesn't represent the material on this disc at all. This is as sincere and original as anything I have heard before. Like the ghost commented before down below, they are actually trying to create something that hasn't been heard before. If you kids want to keep listening to the same music over and over again, then be my guest...there are plenty of copy of a copy of a copy bands out there who are leeching off of their predecessors. I suggest picking up this album and giving it a couple listens. If the band reads this, kudos...i love the album. Haha I only listen to shitty modern music. Id like to hear the logistics of how you came to that conclusion. I picked this up the other day and while I don't have any of their previous releases, I have really enjoyed this release. Very interesting music and fitting lyrics. I really dig how the singer can go from that intense yell to his almost boy-ish sing. I will be looking forward to hearing more from these guys in the future. Solid four stars. Wow let's classify everything by when it came out. What a terrible review... I haven't heard this yet... but I like the ghost, and that's all I have to say about that. Aren't you all glad that I shared that tidbit with you? I don't know. From what I hear of it's definition, Post-rock is kind of like more accessable post-punk, like Sonic Youth and R.E.M.. If nobody tells me what the hell post-rock is, I'm just going to assume its made up. hey theghostgroup, that comment wasn't intended to be serious really,...it just seems like the ghost heard this bike's name and thought it would be cool to use something that sounded similar to it for their album title...just a little levity, yo cet album est malade and at this point i've had a couple cocktails, I'm upset with myself for the type on "their" ... they're.... damn english studies BSD, At least you guys come outright and admit you're in the band, unlike a lot of these guys who saw their album got a bad review and post "hey these guys rock" in the forum just to try and even the view. But the main thing you should not do in the future is take a review on a site called Punknews.org seriously... So ummm.. what's up with using your penis as a weapon. That's kinda weird. hey punknews staff... where is the newest Detachment kit cd review? I think that cd deserves to be reviewed. To answer your question: Although no matter where people's opinions may rest I'll still keep doing what I'm doing. However, I still am curious as to what folks think. And, while some creators of mediums refuse to let reviews or critiques concern or bother them, I take everyone personally. This I acknowledge as something that may not be the brightest of ways, but at this point it's a knee jerk reaction. Being involved in every aspect of the music is of grave importance to me. I'm not saying that I'm not self-concious or that I don't care about outside tastes, I'm simply stating that they won't sway my own. YOU call punk rock, buddy, YOU call punk rock. worst review i've ever read on punknews. absolutley no foundation in anything you said. i really don't think that seeing the ghost 6 whole times should make you an expert on them as musicians or as people. this is what music should be. you're right, you just don't get it. along with everyone else in this watered down scene we call punk rock. But if the Max Levine Ensemble AND TBISPB ganged up on you... Scott- There are many fans and non-fans that disagree with you. It is my belief that anybody who thinks the ghost's first record is better than "this pen" has no interest in musical evolution. This record is grown up. Your review is not. This bike is a pipe bomb should sue, especially considering that they're a left winged acoustic punk act. Those are generally the types that are inclined to corporate lawyers and entertainment law. Sellouts, I bet you're just trying to cash in on the iminent resurgence of Christian Hip Hop. And by then everyone will be complaining that you abandoned the sound from this record anyway, 'cause you know, they were totally into it back in the day, and no one else besides them understood its genius. What did you all expect? A carbon copy of the first album? We had been a band for 6 months when that record was recorded. Needless to say, I'd rather experiment and fail miserably than repeatedly try to re-hash a tired sound out over and over again. We're not a pop band, we've never even claimed to be a reputable or good band, what you get is what you get. We play for ourselves, not the expectations of others. There's a million and one bland post-hardcore albums out there (our first record just may file under that category), if that's what you want you should have no trouble locating them. In all honesty, it's been a long year, this record has been shelf-surfing for eleven months. We're already working on the third one, just to make sure we keep you all guessing we're going to be experimenting with the Christian hip-hop genre, in the vein of DC Talk. this album is so fucking amazing but you must listen it more then 1 time before review it. I'm seeing This Bike next week. Should be great. not to be a prick, but i kinda think that This Bike is a Pipebomb should sue these guys for this album title: i mean, same number of syllables and everything...ESPECIALLY considering that one of their other albums begins with the word "this" as well This Is A Hospital is one of my favorite albums. But I had to listen to it probly 10 times before I realized how amazing it was. Maybee Scott and some of you other people should do that. I can not belive some of the scores this guy gives. I know scott reads the posts. And it seems like he is trying to please the readers and not his own ears. Also this guy gives shit like Brand New a fucking 9. It's a curse alright... The curse of the rotting conservo-cock. I think my girlfriend's fucking Reagan's corpse. Or maybe they saved his cock for expirimentation. i think another thing that hurt this album was the release date being pushed farther and farther back. i was so hyped to get this album and then they just pushed it back from like may to june (not sure when it was originally supposed to come out). it sucks cause they toured with the larry arms which would've def. helped sales of this album i'm sure. "wow janelle.. you are soooooo punk.. cunt." I'll take the penis mightier for $500, Alex. i knew this was scott's review at the end of the first sentence. Likewise, I love the ghost. Saw them a dozen times, i like all of brian moss's music (even that trust foundation ep), and even like his hanalei stuff. wow janelle.. you are soooooo punk.. cunt. Of course you thought it was funny...thats why you probably posted it. I'm just trying to do my civic duty as a human being by letting you know that nobody else thinks its funny and that you should spare yourself the embarrassment next time. Its not because I hate you...I just care that much. in the words of MDC: i thought it was funny jeff, get off blakes nuts. lets all just pause for a second so we can all just bask in the stupidity of that post direclty below me...ok thats enough. Listen kid, if you ever get the idea to post something that blatently retarded again, just do the right thing and leave. Spare yourself the embarrassment. I mean dont you have to go practice long division or whatever they teach you in the 5th grade? (____(____)=lD I hate the post-hardcore genre...well just the term post-hardcore. Its getting to be just as anoying and vague as calling a band emo a decent band, but the lead singer is an asshole. all he did was feed his ego when he was up on stage. what an ass. They said it was the most frightened they'd been at a show. your name says it all you fucking idiot. "Sloppyblake, you have absolutely no authority to give your 2 cents into any topic ont his site. your name says it all. anyone that still goes by the calling of a shit band from rome georgia that wrote songs called "fat chicks", and had lyrics like "i want to be in a pop punk poser sellout band" needs to fucking hang themselves. your mom should stop fucking your dad on crack, because her horny ass in heat apparently spawn's stupid mother fucker's like you. Do yourself a favor and shoot yourself, no, wait, fucking shoot your fucking mother because that drug induced peice of shit made you. and you like the sloppy meateaters." Ha! "This PENIS a weapon" I need guidance. What's the difference between The Ghost and Give Up the Ghost? Do they play similar styles by chance? I'm "Ghost" ignorant, you might say. also, from the 2 mp3s, i tend to think that is the stuff that is way better live than recorded. just imagining that they are playing it while i listen makes it sound about 10 times better i dont have this cd yet, but im pretty sure its better than the audio karate record I'll be recieving this album in the mail tommorow probably, I absolutely love this band as well. I was very pleased with the 2 mp3's available on their site, I'm really looking forward to hearing the album. "The best track is the instrumental" That's classic. What about Japanese neo-psych band Ghost? Their newest is definitely better than anything to be reviewed in the last week. Back when I had a band, we played with these guys in a small hall not far from here. No stage. "sorry, this isn't an album about your life scott. they won't write songs you can relate to everytime." scott killed two albums i like in one day! not only do the gamits suck, and have no rights to do anything, but they lied about having a guitar stolen just so they wouldn't have to play a show where only 20 people showed up. The CD has some really good songs, but I totally understood the comment about failed experimentations, but I noticed that a couple times on their first cd (note 'My First and Last'). I need guidance. What's the difference between The Ghost and Give Up the Ghost? Do they play similar styles by chance? I'm "Ghost" ignorant, you might say. I really don't see how anyone could call this album generic...Scott, who produced this album? Didn't Albini do the last one? but sickboi, what of the serpent and the rainbow? I hear you on this one Scott. It's really rather bland, and more generic. Which makes sense why everyone loves this record. Scott, i love you, but i have to say that Mad Max is a kick ass track. This is definately worth picking up... The mp3s I have from their first album are amazing. Just out of curiousity though, does anyone know if the album as a whole is worth picking up? "am i supposed to care that the band knows how to party?" Famous quotes had misled all of you; the sword would fuck the pen's world up, any day of the week. pitchfork will prove you wrong Scott. so i looked at the title of the album really fast and thought it was something different, haha. guess they planned it like that. I guess I'm not as hardcore of a fan as Scott, but I thought this album was great...very orginal take on the whole post-hardcore deal... |
