I am a fan of the Ghost. Well, that's putting it lightly - I love the Ghost. I believe I've seen the band at least a half-dozen times in support of their 2002 album This Is A Hospital. I completely adored their unique take on post-rock/hardcore. I even made them my MP3 of the Week a few years ago.

So, as a fan, I can tell you that this album stinks.

After 2 years of waiting for a follow-up [and watching the disc's release date get pushed back multiple times], we are left with 9 tracks. One of which is an instrumental. One of which was previously released on their split 12" with The Prosperity Wallet. If you subtract those two tracks from the album, there isn't even a half-hour's worth of new, lyrically-geared music. And it gets worse as you actually listen to these songs and become more and more disappointed in this band's direction.

The album starts off on a positive note with "Broken Ears/Poison Hearts." After you hear the guitar plug into the amp and the prerequisite feedback, you're launched into a pulsating drumbeat following by the Ghost's now-standard interplay between guitars. If there's one thing the band can do, it's write ridiculously cool-sounding overlapping guitar riffs. Singer Brian Moss' voice, however, almost sounds broken as he sings "March along to the chimes of failure" before he explodes, screaming "Crowned butcher, you're far from civilized / Claming progress in poisoned hearts." Thus far, the album is 1-for-1.

"Exorcism In The Key Of A Minor" has some nice moments musically, and Moss' vocals develop more emotion at the softer points of the song as well as gaining strength as he sings "I reinvent myself, we reinvent ourselves". Then, out of the blue, the song comes to a crashing halt and switches gears into a more spasmodic mode, and it just doesn't work. This is the first of many failed attempts at experimentation on the disc. "...And Now For My Disappearing Act" could have been one of the best songs the band's written to date, but it gets bogged down with percussion sampling and electronic noodling that just kills it. "A Letter From God" features Moss' vocals pumped through a robot filter and it just sounds stupid.

One of the album's strangest tracks, however, is "Mad Max Was An Amateur." It contains an awesome 5/8-to-6/8 rhythm and continues with the band's style of angular guitar and bass lines, but then when it reaches the chorus, it sounds like an old sea chanty sailors would sing while sitting around a campfire at a port or something. It's so incredibly uncomfortable to listen to, not to mention the self-promoting lyrics - "We fight like brothers and party like thieves / Excess and irony, alcohol and trees." Am I supposed to care that the band knows how to party?

The lyrics get even worse in "Modern Restless," as Moss yells "Carry on with your pre-death post-rock / I'll be drinking with the hip hop kids down the block. It sound so ridiculous in the context of the song, the most dissonant on the album [and one that is completely deserving of the subgenre "pre-death post-rock"]. Maybe I just don't get it.

So after two years, this is what The Ghost has given us. And it's not really worth holding onto. The best track is the instrumental. Let's hope this is just a sophomore slump, and they can shake off the pressure for their third go-round, if they make it that long.

Banished and Loving It
Mad Max Was An Amateur

    My Score:

The first time I put this cd in I skipped every track. I had already heard a lot of the songs, but on first listen they were very harsh on this version of recording. I've seen the Ghost three days in a row before, and I can tell you they are never the same. Depending on their level of inebreation and various other factors. I have never seen Brian Moss sing a song the same. So I expected this cd to be different. Later on I gave this cd another chance and really got into it.

I noticed that the lyrics are more strait up, not as many metaphors. Some times saying things strait out can sound corny compared to a metaphor that makes music reveiwers think you are 'artsy'. When really the same thing is being said, just not as hard to figgure out. I think we have all grown acustom to bands doing this. Refering to something as darkness, and to vaginas as flowers. Tunning yourself for metaphorical writing can make you think strait up writing is too simple. Like "Did he just say 'drinking with the hip hop kids'?"

The Ghost has gone through a lot of changes since their first release 'this is a hospital'. And after this record, it is litterally a different band. With only 1/2 of the original members remaining.

What I think hurts the Ghost is this cd was pushed back for about a year. These songs are much different live by now. They have probably worked out the kinks and found the way they perfer playing the songs.

Listening to this cd has allowed me to start listening to the rookie release again. I hadn't been able to listen to it since the ghost changed up their style a while back. 'this pen is a weapon' is deffinatly not one of my favorite albums, but the ghost remains one of my favorite bands to see in a crowded basement with a beer soaked carpet, drunk off my ass.

    My Score:

i disagree with this review. i've also beena fan of the ghost for some time. i think this album is much more developed than "this is a hospital." the guitar tracks in "mad max was an amateur" and "banished and loving it" are very well done, and very impressive. i can't think of another band out there now that has a similar style to the ghost, that can pull it off so well. the lyrics on this album are amazing, they are thought out and have great depth. if you cant appreciate a band's growth and maturing, that should not be reason to say "this stinks." if you cant comprehend the lyrics that should not be reason to say "this stinks." i've read similar reviews for example of Brand New's "deja entendu", and how bad it was because it was nothing like "your favorite weapon". if you want, and expect a band to stagnate and stay exactly the same, you shouldn't wait for new albums, and you should not be reviewing music.

and to comment on the "percussion sampling and electronic noodling" as you put it, the in "...And Now For My Disappearing Act". i think it adds a lot to the song and sounds unique, a standard drum track there would be routine and trivial, but now it stands out.

this isn't an album that you can listen to once and pass judgement, you need time to soak it in, since much of the music is so intricately put together

every fan of the ghost i know that has heard this album has been impressed, and really enjoy it. so if youre a fan, or if you want to hear some of the most honest and expressive music out there, definately give this album a fair shot, you wont be let down. just don't expect the ordinary...but with the ghost you shouldn't be doing that anyways. great album.

I appreciate the fact that you enjoy a lot of what I've created. However, I have no plans to cater to your tastes. Progression is an entirely natural process; if you feel as though I'm moving in the wrong direction so be it, maybe I'm falling off, maybe I'm branching out. On another note, I'm a bit dissatisfied that you'd refer to me or anyone else as "bang for your buck". Regardless of your intentions, some people may feel comodified by a line like that. Next time around just download the album and keep your change.

    My Score:

Yeah, i say this bad boy of an album in average atleast. Speaking as a fan who's been listening ever since Brian was in the Wunder Years, I used to be that every damn song Brian put his talent in I automatically could rock out to.whether it was the Wunder Years, Trust Foundation, or the Ghost. As of late though, It sounds like Brian has been slacking off a bit. Sure this new album pushes the envelope but at what cost. Personally, i think anyone could push the envelope but it takes real talent to still make it rock hard. I agree w/ the reviewer, 9 tracks but I can seriously only listen to maybe 3 or 4 of them. I used to get a lot more bang our of my buck from Moss, but i think he's suffering from rock boredom. And for some reason, I have a problem w/ "The Ghost" performing an "Exorcism". Maybe it's just me. Brian, if you read this, bring back the "Crush Fatal", the "Groundswell", "the 45th parallel", the "By The Books", just please don't continue "the skin we shed has stories to tell"!! Its a waste of your talents

    My Score:

it's just odd how everyone's opinion of this album is the total opposite of the person who reviewed it. i couldn't agree with these people more. writing quality music shouldn't be based on time or how long it took for them to get it out. it was a long wait for it to finally be able to purchase, but it was much worth the wait. they replaced half of their band in between their first release, this is a hospital, and this pen is a weapon, which is one of the hardest tasks a band faces. honestly, i did think it was partially weak the first couple times through, but the more you listen to it, you can't help but to not grasp onto, at least, the majority of the tracks. i guess some reviews just don't take certain aspects into consideration. props to everyone who thinks this album is rockin, while also having some balls with the experimental things they used. thanks.

    My Score:

This album is great. The review doesn't represent the material on this disc at all. This is as sincere and original as anything I have heard before. Like the ghost commented before down below, they are actually trying to create something that hasn't been heard before. If you kids want to keep listening to the same music over and over again, then be my guest...there are plenty of copy of a copy of a copy bands out there who are leeching off of their predecessors. I suggest picking up this album and giving it a couple listens. If the band reads this, kudos...i love the album.

I picked this up the other day and while I don't have any of their previous releases, I have really enjoyed this release. Very interesting music and fitting lyrics. I really dig how the singer can go from that intense yell to his almost boy-ish sing. I will be looking forward to hearing more from these guys in the future. Solid four stars.

This I acknowledge as something that may not be the brightest of ways, but at this point it's a knee jerk reaction. Being involved in every aspect of the music is of grave importance to me. I'm not saying that I'm not self-concious or that I don't care about outside tastes, I'm simply stating that they won't sway my own.

Scott- There are many fans and non-fans that disagree with you. It is my belief that anybody who thinks the ghost's first record is better than "this pen" has no interest in musical evolution. This record is grown up. Your review is not.

You've also made a factual error. The "vocals pumped through a robot filter" appear on "The Skin We Shed Has Stories To Tell", NOT "A Letter From God".

I would like to know how "Mad Max" is strange. It's probably the most accessible track on the record. Your simple pop-minded ears should have found it well. And it doesn't seem to bother anybody that Andrew WK talks about knowing how to party all the time. I guess it'd be okay if the song was about a breakup, right?

So while you feel the band has not met your standards with this record after two years, it makes me wonder what the hell you've been been listening to for the last two years. You said it yourself. You just don't get it.

And by then everyone will be complaining that you abandoned the sound from this record anyway, 'cause you know, they were totally into it back in the day, and no one else besides them understood its genius.

Face it, you can't win with most of these people, so just keep doing what you're doing. It sounds like you're ahead of the game in that department, don't lose that attitude.

What did you all expect? A carbon copy of the first album? We had been a band for 6 months when that record was recorded. Needless to say, I'd rather experiment and fail miserably than repeatedly try to re-hash a tired sound out over and over again. We're not a pop band, we've never even claimed to be a reputable or good band, what you get is what you get. We play for ourselves, not the expectations of others. There's a million and one bland post-hardcore albums out there (our first record just may file under that category), if that's what you want you should have no trouble locating them. In all honesty, it's been a long year, this record has been shelf-surfing for eleven months. We're already working on the third one, just to make sure we keep you all guessing we're going to be experimenting with the Christian hip-hop genre, in the vein of DC Talk.

I too, heard this and was disappointed. And ive been waiting as well forever for it. And all the stuff since the first album has been nothing but spectacular, the song on the oil comp, the ten inch is phenomenal (why not re-record "curtain calls"? thats gold dammit, texas tea, silicone!).

The re-recording of "letter from god" takes a great song and deflates all the energy from it. The lead guitar part i remember from it has been muted and replaced with a choppy tempo following nothing. Where's the guitar? why take it out? the whole song is slowed down because of it. And thats the whole record. Good songs that are just let drag. The drum and bass recorded so there practically behind a pane of glass.

on the second listen on an actual huge stereo, its grown, so im still struggling with it, but its certainly teeth gnashing.

a decent band, but the lead singer is an asshole. all he did was feed his ego when he was up on stage. what an ass.

GUTG is hardcore. The Ghost is post-.

also, from the 2 mp3s, i tend to think that is the stuff that is way better live than recorded. just imagining that they are playing it while i listen makes it sound about 10 times better

Back when I had a band, we played with these guys in a small hall not far from here. No stage.

They said it was the most frightened they'd been at a show.

The score is for how fucking cool of guys they were.

not only do the gamits suck, and have no rights to do anything, but they lied about having a guitar stolen just so they wouldn't have to play a show where only 20 people showed up.

    My Score:

The CD has some really good songs, but I totally understood the comment about failed experimentations, but I noticed that a couple times on their first cd (note 'My First and Last').

I was also a little disappointed by the song count, although the song from their split 12" seems to work great with this album.

(and only The Gamits are allowed to end a cd with an instrumental)
