When this DVD was announced, I remember a lot of people confused by The Hanson Brothers. They actually brought up the horrid pop group before they thought of the greatest sports movie of all time. While I'm sure these people weren't being serious, the comments made them look dumber than Andrew Ference. However, I doubt The Hanson Brothers drew most people to this DVD, it was more likely that their legendary alter-egos, Nomeansno brought most people in. Nomeansno's blend of punk and jazz has undoubtedly left its impression on inumberable bands and fans throughout their 25 year career, but this is the first (non-bootlegged, at least) documentation of their live.

This DVD covers a song from just about every Nomeansno release, and thankfully, the sound quality is top notch. With a band like this, at least in my opinion, the sound needs to be good to hear all the intricacies of each song, on here every instrument stands out and no one instrument drowns out the others. Despite their long tenure, the band shreds through their set with the energy of band playing their first show ever. The crowd interaction is great, and the audience really seems to be getting into it. It's nice to see this, because nothing kills the mood of a live video more than a lackluster crowd. The band plays tight and the songs done to perfection

I wasn't all that familiar with the Hanson Brothers before I got this DVD, aside from knowing they shared members with Nomeansno and that they liked hockey. Those two things alone made me want to like these guys. Their style is a lot more straight forward than their cohorts, and although you can hear some of the quirky tendencies bleeding through here and there, they mostly play straight up punk rock. I've heard comparisons to the Ramones, and that's not too far off. I hadn't heard most of these songs before, so I can't comment on how they were pulled off live, but they seemed to flow well. Again, the crowd seemed enthusiac, as did the band.

This is a really good representation of Nomeansno's career, and although some older footage would have been nice, this show does quite well for itself. I'll probably be checking out some Hanson Brothers songs as well. Fans of Nomeansno should really get this.

i'm out of the hockey loop... when i read this i thought ferance still played for the penguins... as fast as they go through players now i have no clue who half of their team is... same way with the pirates... it's quite sad that a casual fan can't name more than 3 guys on his favorite teams...

I felt obligated to post a comment because no one has mentioned that nomeansno kicks ass, and if you've never heard their music, I suggest you go out and give them a listen because its like nothing you've ever heard before.

Hanson Brothers play Ramones style songs to honor them as the Ramones were the best damn band in the world. But Hanson Brothers are better to see live than NoMeansNo, in my opinion as its just so much fun. NoMeansNo kicks ass too, but getting to fight Johnny in the pit, then having him hauled off for 2 minutes for roughing, takes the cake. Oh yeah and to those who dont really know Hanson, then you dont know shit cause they albums are incredible. Used, new, whatever.... just buy it!

I wish this DVD had some interviews, or touring footage or something like that though....

It really depends.

If I recall, you don't like bands that are doing things that have been done before. Basically, they're playing Ramone's styled punk with hockey themed lyrics, that's about as deep as their sound gets. It's fun stuff, I don't know if I'd buy it new, but if I saw the used CD somewhere, I'd probably pick it up.

i think the hanson brothers were started to intentionally sound just like the ramones? i could be wrong though, but i recall reading that somewhere.

I don't have a problem with Ference, but he's always taken terrible penalties. Sutter likes him, but his old problems still persist. He can't clear the front of the net, forwards skate right around him, and he still takes horrendous penalties. Calgary plays a system based on obstruction and clogging the neutral zone, so his mistakes don't stand out as much now, but he's still a fuck up.

And I'm also glad the Flames don't have St. Louis anymore, otherwise, they might have won the cup. Someone tell Iginla that fighting with a visor on is a no no.

i like ferrence too, but you can't question the fact that he is pretty dumb. first off, he doesn't exactly flaunt his intelect during interviews, and secondly, he still would have been called for high sticking even if frasier hadn't made that bullshit charging call with a minute left.

oh, and the hanson brothers are awesome.

I stopped reading when you dissed ference. Look forty, just cuz we traded him for a loaf of bread and he broke out as a solid D this year doesnt mean you have to insult him. What is joe melichar einstein now
