The boys of Underoath have solved the puzzle. They have realized that nothing is worse than generic metalcore, and that it is a genre that is becoming over saturated with bands that sound like each other with no distinguishing characteristics. Good job boys. So there they must have been, brainstorming on what could separate them from the rest. Did they decide on becoming better musicians? No. Changing the vocal styles to something other than screaming? No. Not getting too sappy and weak on the melodies? Nope. Rather, they all scrounged together one hundred dollars to go buy a cheap effects generator so that they could slightly pepper some of their songs with little bits of crappy techno sounds. Way to be Underoath, this sounds like a recipe for success.

So, the new effort “They’re Only Chasing Safety” opens with the somewhat promising track “Young and Aspiring.” At the beginning, it isn’t that bad of a song at all. Nice little guitars and everything. Some normal screaming with a little bit of singing mixed in. They do seem to have a knack for layering the vocals quite nicely, and the screaming mirrored against the singing on some of the more melodic parts does work pretty nicely. All in all, the song progresses fairly normally without really jumping out, until, at the two minute mark, the true genius behind Underoath, the man behind the effects board hops in and leaves his mark. After a few seconds of his effort, I leave my mark by skipping the rest of the song.

Not much else needs to really be said about the rest of the album. The vocal strengths remain throughout the album, the guitars have some nice little catchy hooks but are not as complex as they should be at times, and that man with the effects board keeps on forcing himself randomly in. One thing that is for sure about this album, it is weaker than I expected at most times. I was not prepared for so much melody, especially following Underoath’s heavy parts. They build the energy, get quite frantic, and then run out of steam and have to recuperate for a minute or so before they can gather up to finish the song. I can really only recommend this album for people that really enjoy mediocre metalcore.

okay well i understand he's trying to sound like dallas and w.e but he needs to develop hi sown identity with the band. spencer is a big redneck and he should make thier music more southern hardcore if nething. its a good cd for some yuppies. i dont mind it. it was the gift i didnt want... but that i got instead of fall of troy ((damn it!))

heres whats important when considering this album...

half of the members from this album werent on the changing of times, so its going to sound different.

if you hate christianity, dont listen to this. (personally, im agnostic, i like it and i dont feel alienated)

hating on music that you would never like is retarded.

bands change. sure, we all want bands to sound the way we love forever, but it happens.

-overall, i dont really like this AS much as the changing of times, or, for that matter, cries of the past. it is a solid release, however. bands grow up. just look at boys night out....

All these little punk rock skateborders need to do us all a favor and ride their skateboards into on coming traffic. Underoath is a good band with good songs, if you are against a band just because they are christain then you need to get a fuckin life!

Posted by warningdevice on 2005-12-08 09:59:57

Hey! Heres an idea! Lets all jerk each other off because a hardcore band is screaming about jesus. What the fuck could possibly be more worse than that!? First off, the whole screamo/hardcore movement is getting old, and christian music added into that mix is my own little version of Hell. I saw more than 50 little fuckers at Warped this year wearing the same Underoath shirt, and the funny thing is, they all thought they were original, and they were definately all christians. I wanted to put a gun to eithe rmy head or theirs to end this shit! And why the hell are they on Punknews... THEY'RE NOT PUNK! They have their own shitty genre to themselves... christians screamo=creamo. WHEN WILL IT END!?

I love this album.i got it about two months ago and I've never gotten tired of it.That doesn't mean I don't listen to MCR and Silverstein just as much just that it's in my cd player 50% of the time.I seriously had NO IDEA this was a christian rock band. And it's a good thing I didn't until the last song"Some will seek Forgivness,Others escape".They don't push the whole christian thing in your face.Anyway,Aaron Gillespie, who sings the soft lyrics and plays drums is awesome at both. And I'm glad they got a new guy to scream.Spencer is better.

    My Score:

I picked up on underoath on this album like last March (right before Taste of Chaos came here....I like to know whose playing what at shows), and I really liked this album. Then again, I did pickup on them during this whole change over. I went and listened to some of the old stuff......actually, all of it, and I still prefer this. The whole metalcore thing they did before wasn't really my thing, but with this change to "screamo" they've REALLY come together, and I love the sound, especially on It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door.

So I'd definitely have to say this is a good album, especially for those really into the whole screamo thing. I've been listening to it for the last 6 months and hven't gotten much tired of it.

    My Score:

Hey that was a funny joke, but where is the real review....ohh...that was it? wow that was pathetic! You obviously have no clue about true rock and true music at all. This was truly pathetic. Underoath has evolved so much as a band over the years, in there last album they sounded like a cheap metalcore band with a screamer that sounded like someone in The Blood Brothers, but Underoath finally got it together in "There Only Chasing Saftey" Down, Set, Go was my favorite song on this album with the perfect mix of melody and screaming to make me say..."wow...and there a christian rock band!"

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, June 17, 2005 at 2:22 PM (EDT)

to blackjudiesinfullbloom. all u have just said can not change the fact that cd is incredibly average and boring.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 7:34 PM (EDT)

i have to say underoath is no longer under the category of christian metal. if u want to hear their best song ever listen to "the last" from cries of the past. that is the best song u will ever hear out of that band.

i recommend this cd if u like emo with heavy screaming, but get their old ones if u want christian metal.

Posted by blackjudiesinfullbloom on 2005-05-22 23:43:28

ok I made a user name just to clerify stuff for people that have no clue what true underoath is all about. I've been following uO for about 4 years now. I have heard their very first ep, their new cd, and everything in between. They started out as a heavy christiam metalcore band. They were absolutely NOT death metal, they were a christian band that used heavy melodolic riffs and heavy breakdowns to vary their pace. They originated from florida and have since then gotten rid of their 1 guitarist and vocalist. The old vocalist was exceptionally unique in my perspective. His name was Dallas and he is now in a southern metal rock band called Maylene and the sons of disaster. The guitarist left and formed Anam Cara. As time changed and so did their members, of course their music is going to change. They got lighter and yes I do agree, they got somewhat more mainstream. But they are still one of the most creative and energetic bands i have ever seen and heard. These guys have persued being a christian band, and Im sick of people saying that "Cries of the past" "Act of Depression" and older songs are "death metal songs." These songs were from personal experiencce. Cotp was related to people that have lost loved ones, and im 90% sure it happened to one of them around December 4th if you listen right. Aod was about all of those who have commited suicide....Dallas(vocalist) wrote most of the lyrics for the songs and some say he was too personal about the songs, critically describing death and the worship of Jesus. Personally i love his lyrics because of his detailed description. So to those of you who think underOATH was death metal, no not really at all...even in "watch me die" it may sound demonic, but it starts off saying that he does not live for satin, but for jesus, and for that reason they make the song sound more low toned and heavier..underoath has gone throught alot of stuff, and they have changed alot...but before you pour your thoughts out in some stupid website that doesnt value the true meaning of music, listen to the old and new stuff, read and comprehend it and then post your opinion...thank you

    My Score:

Underoath is awesome. I downloaded this album the first day it came out as an album advance on MIRC. To this day it is the most played album on my ipod. I have not grown tired of the music at all. I'm pretty dissapointed in a lot of the reviews on this website in general. Iit seems that a lot of great bands get discredited for their work here. Oh well. Listen to it for yourself and make your own judgement

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, May 9, 2005 at 6:09 AM (EDT)

Score's for the album. However, I am a bit displeased with all the assholes who support the band, and post on this site. It seems like no one can come up with anything better to say other than "you faggots, fuck you", etc. Give me a break. You're making everyone else who likes the album seem like 14 year old kids who latch on to the latest trend, and have no knack for constructive criticism. The truth is, most people who don't like the album have probably only heard "Reinventing You Exit", which is a bit generic, and definitely the worst new song. The new screamer (vocalist, singer, whatever) is a billion times better than the previous one. The band has always been good, has always played great melodic hardcore, and the new screamer adds so much more. The drummer's voice (yes, he sings) sounds a tiny bit like Adam Lazzara I guess, but it's not an exact copy or anything. He can't really change his voice, so lay off him. As far as the music, it's a lot better than most "screamo" bands, i.e. TBS, Alexisonfire, Story of the Year, what have you. Listen to "I Don't Feel Very Receptive Today", proof that these guys can still write some badass hardcore. I understand that it's pretty produced, but is that to say that they don't deserve it? Do you want all your albums to sound shitty? Bands can't survive off of 4-track recorders forever. It's glossy, but in a good way. Of course, not everyone is going to like this music, but at least give it a chance, rather than gaining credibility by siding with all the infamous punknews commentators who call it shit. And yes, it's Christian, so what? Oh, you guys....

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at 5:15 PM (EDT)

    Underoath I'm a bit speechless.

In my opinion they're a pretty awesome band.

    screams or no screams

I actually enjoy every single song.
I've heard no old Underoath so I'm only speaking for now.

It's an album I'd recommend anyone to purchase.
    It's worth it.

And those comment of Christian and all that nonsense.

That's just placing them into some sort of genre.

They are what they are Underoath.

    A band......not just another.

To be honest I listen to them almost every morning while I go to work. Amongst others......currently rotating my 1 cd at a time changer installed in my non-producable black nissan stanza.

    My Score:

Oh wow. Clearly these guys are one of the best bands around. And what the hell are you people talking about saying that this music is for jocks? Last I checked nobody's really that hardcore anymore anyway, and I'm sure all of you who said that play some sort of sport sometimes. Everybody plays something, because clearly nobody justs sits around all day listening to music. If you do, get a life. Also, obviously the comparisons to TBS are WAY off because TBS doesn't even scream, therefore they are not hardcore and cannot even be put into the same category as this band. Good work guys, your music is fantastic and I look forward to hearing more like this. Make more songs like "Young And Aspiring" and "Down, Set, Go" and all your faithful fans will be happy. Plain and simple, if you don't like Underoath you don't like great music.

Everyone has right to their own opinion, but if someone says that this album sucks because it's not hard enough, I say to that person that they are ignorant. Art has no boundaries kids...All Underoath tries to do is play music they love and love people with it. They don't judge and say crap about other people and bands...so why would anyone bash them? It is their right to express their faith and feelings however they would like..If you can't appreciate that, then you need to take a look in the mirror and ask yourself if you could put yourself out there and stand up for what you believe in...it's all about respect....remember, Art has to boundaries...

they kind of do demostrate a christian character not that much but who cares many people would probably listen to them anyway If they werent christians
the drummer/singer sounds quiet like the tbs guy but the band itslef is totally different
Dead Poetic is quiet better that underoath to my point of view

I like how the reviewer talks about Underoath jumping out of saturated metalcore genre(which is true) but neglects to mention that they decided to hop on the bandwagon and join the supersaturated genre of screamo! Yay, scratch up another piece of crap. This band used to have talent and mix metal with melody. Now they want you to think they still have metal in them but they really want to appeal to the dumb screamo kids who just found out about TBS this year. I used to an Underoath fan. I really enjoyed Cries of the Past and The Changing of Times. But Underoath lost vision when Octavius left the band. Then Dallas left and in that they lost an incredible vocalist. Now they're lyrics are emo crap. I'm very disappointed by this album. I was really hoping they'd switch back over to the heavier side. By the way, Underoath has had a keyboardist since Acts of Depression, but he serves mostly as stage presence, not a feature member of the band.

Ok for all you have any idea what the hell you talking about you would know at the least this band rocks. The dynamics in all the songs are so awesome. Very well put together. "Oh but they are sell outs, they are sell outs!" ....... it’s called change, it gets lame playing the same kind of music for so long, and if you one of those people who only listen to one kind of music….. Your dumb.. so if you don’t like don’t listen to it. And who ever said they sound like T.B.S is really stupid and should get kicked in the "left nut". I personally like the question “what happened to Dallas’s low end?”…… what the heaven kind of Underoath fan are you. Don’t say something stupid unless you know the band and what your talking about. I love the vocals from Dallas, but the new mix of Aaron and Spencer are just awesome in a nut shell. Try playing drums and singing at the same time. Oh yeah about that question they got a new singer, witch is cool. And different witch also a plus. Them being Christians has nothing to do with the music why bring it up? People are going to hate them? Those “people” really need not care so much? Haha seriously. Well im done. BUT if anyone one has something to say. I GOT TEN FRIENDS A CROWBAR THAT SAYS YOU AINT GOING TO DO JACK. x3deathbyfear@yahoo.com

This album ISN'T old underOATH, that's for sure. But hey, it's a pretty good album. I stopped labeling music as emocore and screamo and nu-metal - mainly because there are way too many genres you can pull out of your ass. I was hoping for something more like Cries of the Past, but instead I got this. all in all a pretty good album. Except the last track. Compared to underOATH of the past, it's a sore disappointment. But looking at is in a more objective light, it's a pretty good album. Except, once more, the last track. So there you go. Listen with an open mind.

many of you are just terrible. 90% of you don't even understand what being a musician is about and how hard it actually is to write unique songs nobody else has come up with.

Listen to the older Underoath albums, it sounds like they took this amazing band and told them to record some songs and then got some guy and told him just to scream over the tracks like a goblin, it makes me want to puke.

The new cd is amazing, and the new vocalist is amazing. His screaming is powerful and he doesnt sound like a goblin carrying a little spear yelling at people.

    This band has some problems

    1) They are "screamo" - I am not saying this is bad - I am being impartial in this statement. However, this means quite alot of people will automatically hate them

    2) They are "christians" - Again - I am not saying this is bad. But again, people are going to automatically hate them. And you will get your comments of "Punk Religion = STUPID"

    3) They are unstable. They have already had to change singer. How long are they actually going to last?

can i just say... without the poor reviews of music, what difference in opinion would there be? groups of people saying the same crap over and over again- come on man, it'd just get plain boring. poor reviews add the other opinions, the adverse side of things-- listening to each standpoint is a pretty important part of forming your own opinion. as for underoath, it's different stuff- maybe not the best, but amusing to listen to. no harm in trying it.

And you may say that they have "sold out" . i say no , becausei saw them at wapred tour in dallas, they still have the same energy as they used to . The new singer is amazing he has such a range and this dude even sings some. they have always been one of my favorite bands, and they always will be. most of these kids that have commented have no clue what they are talking about. this album shows so much diversity. and I myself love every bit of it EVEN THE LAsT SONG . this song was written by aaron from copeland. and it shows that hardcore metal core emo core whatever you wanna call it its evolving into life changing music. if you disagree hit me up we can discuss it! very nicely though........ Well, I really liked This Runs Through and Underoath's last album, so I thought this would be pretty damn good. Unfortunately, this album has very little metal and too much of "that" type of singing that every other "screamo" band is using (wimpy). I won't label this a "sellout" album, but it sure as hell sounds like one. This is just derivative, and what happened to Spencer's low end?
Oh, and the last song is simply unforgivable. If you're looking for something kinda heavy, light and poppy at the same time, go buy Dead Poetic's newest one -- it's pretty good.

Spencer also falls short of filling Dallas's shoes for me. but I am also a fan of Spencers old band This runs through. it sad that underoath had to lose dallas and that the FL hardcore scene had to lose This runs through.
and about the whole taking back sunday thing , Its funny how one ignorant persons remark can make everyone one else say the same thing. I think the best term for this is still sheep. I dont think they really sound anything like TBS.
And anyone who does probably did not listen to all of TBS's tell all your friends because there really are no connections then they are 2 albums that are worth owning.

i had read some pretty bad reviews about the new cd but when i actually went out and got for myself and listened to it all i have to say it's that its very beautiful, different but very very good and spencer DOES NOT sound at all like the guy from TBS. change is difficult and hard to accept i think people need remember that people/bands/music everything at one point MUST change and evolve if things were always the same it would SUCK and be boring. i miss dallas, he was awesome but i'm happy with the new stuff and spencer aswell and this is a great cd and it's a shame that people are talking so much trash and to the point of disrespect, thats sad. i say give it a chance and see it as a new change for them and for everyone. change is good.

No one was to know what was happening in me I felt no love,
"I felt no reason to carry on with my life
Everything was wrong, nothing was right, at least that is what I thought
Kids finding laughter at my expense
They were killing me on the inside they couldn't give up their pride
My heart was bleeding from so much grieving
On the outside I looked fine, you couldn't tell but on the inside was eternal hell"

Those lyrics are OLD Underoath lyrics, as far as i go, anything would be better then that

All you had to say was five words:

    "Taking Back Sunday with screaming."

When all you listen to is taking back sunday, simple plan, brand new, and yellowcard thats all you are going to say. You think Taking back sunday invented their sound? You think they are pioneers then you are a dumbass and need to stfu.
    - BTW i know im a ass who cares you can't compare every fucking band to TBS.
