Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)

The minute I saw that Stretch Arm Strong was playing with Between the Buried and Me and Terror on the Made Tour, I knew I was going. The tour is a follow up to last year’s Made Tour that had The Movielife and Further Seems Forever on the bill.

The show was being held in the basement of club DV8, which is called Albee Square. Iced Earth was playing not even a block away. It was obvious, as people walked towards and past Albee Square, that the 45-year old guys with long hair and Man-O-War shirts were not going to see Stretch Arm Strong. The basement of the club, although large, holds most of the “crowd” in a somewhat narrow way or “hallway” section in front of the small stage. Thick pillars run right down the middle of the floor, supporting the floor above. One of the pillars sits right at front of the stage, where the singer of a band would usually be standing. The show was being sponsored in part by Peta, and a booth was set up next to the merch tables showing videos of animals being slaughtered. A couple other booths were set up near the exit showing videos…of what? I don’t know. I didn’t bother to look.

With about a little over one hundred people in attendance, Day of Contempt took the stage. I wasn’t familiar with them, and automatically my mind came up with the conclusion that they looked like Atreyu and probably played metalcore, but they sounded more like a hardcore band. The vocalist was really good and had a strong voice. The guitarist did some clean singing on a couple songs and there was a little double bass drumming going on. In between songs the singer told us that they’re from Australia and would be recording a new album soon. My friend and I talked with a couple of the guys after their set and they were really cool.

Between the Buried and Me took the stage next. I had recently bought their album, The Silent Circus, and I was looking forward to seeing them live. Either not too many people were familiar with them or just didn’t like them, but a pit opened up and a couple kids started dancing. No matter what anyone says, these guys are great musicians. The guitarists were all over the place, the drummer was insane, the singer was right-on with the album, and even the bass player can tear it up. I only grew to appreciate this band that much more. After a rather short, five-song set, Terror was ready to get things going.

Terror set the place off, (well, all the kids on the floor, at least) unlike anyone else that night. What was a fair-sized pit in front of the stage turned into an entire room of kids flailing their legs and arms and doing their coolest spin kicks that they practiced in the mirror hours before the show. I’m really not too much into Terror; they play a brand of what I consider tough-guy-mosh-core that I’m just not into…probably because I’m not a tough guy and don’t say ‘Fuck’ enough. Anyways, they played a tight set and I can respect what they’re doing and they seem to have a huge following.

Right before Stretch Arm Strong started their set, vocalist Chris McLane thanked the crowd for showing up tonight, as he was aware another bad was playing down the street. Someone yelled out “Iced Earth sucks!” to which Chris responded in typical posi-core fashion, “I didn’t say they sucked, I just wanted to thank everyone for supporting all the bands playing here tonight.” Playing for almost an hour, Stretch Arm Strong ended the night with an insane set. They played a good chunk of material off Rituals of Life, Revolution Transmission, and a couple songs off the newest album, Engage. McLane reminded the audience that everyone paid the same price, and everyone should be able to enjoy the show, whether it be dancing, standing in the back, or standing up front. There was a lot of dancing, piling up of bodies, mic sharing, and several people rushing on stage to steal the mic, most notably on the last song, For the Record, in which a group took the mic, as the vocalist “pretended” to sing the last few lines into an imaginary microphone, just before getting it back to finish the last three words.

The Made tour is over with as of the 11th of June, but I highly recommend seeing any of these bands if they come to town. All the bands seemed energetic and were very nice. All four bands will be playing at Hellfest.

All you guys that are saying BTBAM isn't talented and really shitty need to shut the fuck up. I want to see you guys go out every night and play shows in front of small amounts of people with so much energy. I personally like BTBAM more then any of the bands you are talking about and they undoubtedly have some of the best talent around these days.

If they were, do you think they'd get more than 20 people at their shows? Judging a band's genre based on attendance is the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard.

Between the Buried and Me plays some pretty fucking crazy ass shifty stuff, but to completely write these guys off...have you seen them play live? I don't see where you can't at least say that these guys have talent playing their instruments.

So to be hardcore, you need to have a small fanbase? Ok, I guess Minor Threat can't be considered hardcore! DEP isn't a hardcore band, and neither is BTBAM. End of discussion.

What a stupid post, and no, BTBAM's first full-length wasn't amazing. They'll never touch "Calculating Infinity," that's for sure. They were a pretty good jam metal band on their first album, and they were a decent Red Chord clone on the new one.

    My Score:

that's really funny that you'd say btbam isnt a hardcore band, whereas dep is. i've never seen btbam play a show with slayer. i dont recall btbam recruiting mike patton for one shitty record. i've seen btbam play a show to no more than 20 people. the silent circus is quite bad, but the self-titled portrays some fantastic songwriting and talent. in closing, shut the fuck up about your pretentious and idiotic observations about what is hardcore and what isnt.

    My Score:

No, you're right, BTBAM is not a hardcore band. I don't know where they quite fit in on this tour. I still like BTBAM, though.

SAS owns, and they are NOT a christian band, they never have been. Why does it matter anyway, they play great music.

Also to the person below, Terror is not an edge band (no X's on their hands, I think they all drink), but yes they portray the tough guy hardcore image to a tee...

terror does suck. the reviewer was right in talking about the mentality of this band. tough guys with crew cuts and X's on their hands playing drop-d power chords....whats the difference between this and nu-metal jock rock with the exception that these dudes toss in words like "integrity" and "raise your fist"

between the buried and me is like one of those spastic crazy ass bands like the red chord or dillinger escape plan

The singer is Christian, I know that. I don't understand where people get off saying they have christian lyrics...positive lyrics, yea, but I've never read anything like "oh god" or "jesus, jesus" in their lyrics. Of course music can be interpreted different ways, but no s.a.s. lyrics have ever struck me as hey this band is a christian band. i guess from the post below tho, they never have been

    My Score:

Stretch Arm Strong is NOT a Christian band.

Here is an excerpt from an old interview with guitarist Scott Dempsey, from Instrife.com :

"IS STRETCH ARM STRONG STRAIGHT EDGE, VEGAN, CHRISTIAN, ETC. ?

no the band is neither of those things as a whole but each of us partake in some of the above listed. we have christians, vegans, vegetarians, meat eater, straight edgers, non straight edgers..... we hate being labeled. a lot of people mistake us for a christian band cause we are on solidstate but we aren't and never were and never pretended we were. it seems some people are disappointed when the find out we aren't. it goes the other way as well. people don't like us sometimes cause they think we are. who cares. we love playing music. we are 5 friends who put everything on the line for this band and what we believe. does it really matter what we believe in. sorry to go off with this question but it really just irritates me when people diss bands because of what they are what they aren't. i though hardcore was a place where we could all be accepted. at least that is what i thought it was...."

    "Death to false Hardcore"

Is that in reference to this show? So Terror and Stretch Arm Strong (the other two bands on the bill have more metal influence, I'd say) aren't hardcore? I'd say that Terror and SAS are pretty straight forward hardcore with the exception of some clean-sung chorus and experimental stuff in SAS songs. What's hardcore then? "Thugs" with tattoos they got in jail, super huge Yankee jerseys and too much power chords and "get up mother fucker" lyrics? Shit...then fuck hardcore....blah!

normally, progressive metal sucks. but between the buried and me are superb. the silent circus is pretty awful, but the self titled record is exceptionally well written and awesome. it has a lot to do with will goodyear being in the band. however, the last time i saw them, they were horribly disappointing, so i can see why some people might not like them.

Stretch Arm Strong are great live. I wouldn't mind seeing Terror although they're nothing special. BTBAM are barely listenable, I can't see what they're trying to do at all, their songs just don't come off as coherent.

    Good review.

He didn't tell people they should be vegetarian/vegan, just that there are options and alternatives to consuming meat, and to think about it and make up your own mind.

I believe you that he would say that, but that's not how PETA does it...they really shove shit down your throat and use nothing but propaganda to try and get you to stop eating meat.

    My Score:

I saw this tour in Houston and San Antonio. All the bands played the exact same setlist at each show. I thought SAS was the best band at each show, though it did seem that many people showed up just to see Terror.

Chris had some cool things to say about informing people about PETA and the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle. He didn't tell people they should be vegetarian/vegan, just that there are options and alternatives to consuming meat, and to think about it and make up your own mind.

I have seen SAS six times now and they didn't played Angels at any of those shows. Here is the set they played:

    SAS:
    30 - 45 Sec. Intro
    Outside Looking In
    Worst Case Scenario
    Means to an End
    We Bleed
    Still Believe, Pt. 2
    Raise Your Fist
    Pursiut of Happiness
    Defect
    For Now
    When Sorrow Falls
    Devil Shoots Devil
    For the Record

I am stoked that I will see SAS next Friday in Houston again for the first show of the Warped Tour.

it gets really tiresome when people defend bad bands (ie BTBAM) by saying they "have talent". i mean, maybe they can play their instruments well, but their songs are still uber-whack. they just mix part after part that have no business being mixed together, throw in poorly down growling and then throw in annoying whiny-voiced emo parts. how fucking trite. see when rorschach and converge and deadguy stated doing the whole "throw lots of parts together and ignore normal song structure" thing in hardcore, it worked because the parts mixed well. but BTBAM just throw shit together and it sounds half assed. and then jump on the obnoxious emo bandwagon with their annoying high-voiced nassaly parts. so fucking lame.
