Street Dogs - State of Grace

With the first day of the tour finally in effect, Streetlight Manifesto lead singer Tomas Kalnoky stated during the first few songs of the band’s excellent set that “You can’t bitch anymore about how we don’t tour.”

Malibu Boy Scouts, a sloppy ska/punk outfit from the area, had to have been playing one of their first shows ever. The band, whose average age couldn’t have been much higher than seventeen, looked nervous as hell. They shook some of it off to joke with the crowd, like how they introduced themselves as Streetlight Manifesto, played the horn intro from “Everything Goes Numb,” thanked us, and left the stage. After a thundering applause, they came back to play a set anyway. They did a lot of goofy dancing, except for the motionless keyboardist/saxophonist, and their lyrical content (ska songs…skanking…ska songs) reminded me of older Reel Big Fish.

The next band taking the stage were the Blue Barracudas, another ska/punk band. Their songs ran together a lot towards the end of their set resulting in a fit of boredom for what seemed like was a good portion of the audience.

Since everyone is already aware of my undying love for ASOB, there needn’t be much for me to say here. Having just jumped on the bill, they played a short but sweet, 25-minute set, which wasn’t nearly as intoxicating as the last time I‘d seen them, but fun nonetheless. They introduced themselves as Taking Back Sunday and ripped right into a speeded, ska’ed-up version of the first two verses of “You Know How I Do,” leading right into “So Let’s Go Nowhere.” I also remember them playing “Rock Rocket Rocketship” and “Kill the President” among others. Oddly enough, one song they played they said would be on the upcoming Big D album. Bearing in mind the fact that a different band was playing it, it sounded good either way.

The High School Football Heroes, who had just finished recording their debut full-length after years together in the local ska-punk scene, put on a good performance. They ran onto the stage and busted into several “classics” and a few songs from the album, titled Close Only Counts in Horseshoes and Hand Grenades. They have a good following, and it showed, with plenty in the crowd singing along. The energy was admirable, and the set rocked nicely.

Big D and the Kids Table played the final opening set of the night. They definitely stuck out a lot from the rest of the bands this night. Although they used minimal horns for the songs, I’ve never seen a ska band with a lead singer’s on-stage swagger like Dave had. He has to be highly influenced by his native Boston hardcore scene, with his fierce strut, head bobbing, and finger lashes, just like any other hardcore band from the area in question. He also does some slick circle whips with the mike cord. They played “Checklist,” “Girls Against Drunk Bitches,” “Scenester,” “Dirt Lip,” “She Won’t Ever Figure It Out,” “Fatman,” “Take Another Look,” and a few others. One new song they played, which they said would be the opening track on the forthcoming How It Goes album, is yet another verbal lashing against scenesters everywhere, with a chorus that went something like, “Does my shirt match my pants? Do my pants match my shoes? Do my shoes match my eyeeees?” (as he bats his own). It sounded similar to Gypsy Hill material, so fans will likely not be disappointed.

Streetlight Manifesto, however, owned the night yet again. Although a mere step behind in terms of tightness sine the last time I saw them only a few months prior, they were spectacular yet again. Their completely unexpected yet insane cover of the Suicide Machines’ “Hey Ska!” was spot-the-fuck-on and had a good number in the crowd singing along immediately. The crowd was also explosive in general response for the entire set though…I was pleasantly shocked at Streetlight’s apparent popularity and glad the band were getting what they deserved. They played nearly every song on the album, performing for well over an hour. Coming back on stage for the encore, Tomas gave us three choices as to what we’d like to hear; “They Provide The Paint For The Picture-Perfect Masterpiece That You Will Paint On The Insides Of Your Eyelids” got the biggest response. “Figures,” Tomas replied, “you’d rather hear a BOTAR song than one of ours.” As the last singalong finally died out, it looked like many were still mouthing one lyric in particular that summed up the past several hours: “this has been the best night of my life.”

Also, I asked Tomas when writing for the next album would begin and he said it was done. He mentioned it’d be out in 2005, which’ll be “a big year for us.”

    My Score:

the young man below who knows all does not work for victory, nor do i, we are just somewhat close with the band. basically we go to alotta their shows because theyre awesome guys and musicians. everything he said is infact true, about the new cd and still hearing nre material from BOTAR and any material from Man Bites Dog. Regarding Big D at the downtown, they played like shit, their sax player wasnt there and it just wasnt a good show for them, dont judge them off that performance, theyre awesome. and as for LAX being a new song, it isnt. As for streetlight, they ripped it up as always, and i myself was the first of said losers to end up on stage (ritual). This all being said, EVERYONE GO TO STARLAND BALLROOM AUGUST 29, 2004 AND SEE STREETLIGHT MANIFESTO COME HOME TO NEW JERSEY. THIS WILL BE THEIR FIRST SHOW BACK FROM THE SUMMER TOUR AND WILL NOT BE A SHOW TO MISS. Big D will also be playing this show, tickets are $12 and doors are at 7pm. Starland Ballroom is in Sayerville, NJ and is easily accessible from rt 18. and i dont work for starland either, i just want a shit load of people to go to this show because it is going to be of the heezie fo sheezie. peace

I was at the Pittsburgh show last night, it was easily one of the best shows I've ever been to. So good, Streetlight does not disappoint. I'm gonna try to make it to another show on this tour as well.

And also, if big D's sound was so bad, how was he supposed to hear him sing that line. And that song isn't new, it was on a split with a british band called five knuckle, which can be found/bought here:

Guy two posts down, inagreendase said they played NEARLY every song on the album, and you've corrected him by saying the exact same thing.

I'm guessing you work for victory (thats a complete guess) cause you started saying we in your last paragraph, which gives me the impression that you are working for victory, so if you do is it true you have that clause to make broken up bands sign onto victory for there new bands?

Im seeing them in LA with the Pietasters. The Pietasters should be the headliner, even if you've seen them already or not. They deserve it. My God, they are a good band. Their tour with Voodoo was amazing. They are one of the greats.

I cant wait to see Streetligh either. Its going to be one hell of a night.

    My Score:

I was at this show. (and Danbury, Enfield, NYC, and Montreal)

You're wrong on a number of things.

First of all, Big D sucked that night. They sounded like shit and were off on a so many different parts. They even said it the next night in Danbury. "We were going to play 'Scenester' but we fucked it up so badly last night we decided not to" amongst other comments they made. While, they were still fun, they sounded horrible.

The New Big D song you said is about scenesters is in fact not. It's called LAX and about elitist in Los Angeles. (Hence the fist line, "Hey elitist from LA. Los Angeles, California.").

Streetlight played their entire album (minus saddest song and i think that'll be the day). The three options for the encore were, i believe, Hell by the Squirrel Nut Zippers, That'll be the Day (it was either that or we are the few- whichever they didn't play.), or They Provide the Paint by BOTAR.

    Crowd picked TPTP.

Right from TPTP they went directly into Better Than You which was a Catch 22 demo from the Rules of the Game Demo. (Some losers *Cough* me *cough* ended up on stage singing with the band on this one)

Don't bank on hearing any of the covers anywhere. They are mixing the covers into their set at random. Sometimes they don't do any covers. I've seen them do TPTP, Hey Ska, Hell, and Better Than You though at the Krome in NJ. I think they're going to do less covers like that the further they get from home.

As for the new album being done. No. It's written. It's not done. It's been written for a while- just like Everything Goes Numb was. Here's to life was originally a catch 22 song- they played it at tomas' last show with c22. It took us years to get that recorded. We were supposed to have a BOTAR full length a year ago. EGN was ridiculously late. Don't count on any time frame the band gives you. We're still waiting to hear from Man Bites Dog. Just wait, be patient, and it'll all be worth it in the end. Tomas does not disappoint.

I just noticed that the overall tone of the message board under this ska-related news item is decidedly less combative than those of other types of posts...what does this say about the ska scene? Just because they aren't using typical 3rd wave song construction anymore doesn't mean they aren't ska. I really couldn't see that being true, but it does make sense.....Earth Crisis/Path Of Resistance, Catch/Streetlight, TBS/Straylight....I also know that Blood For Blood weren't allowed to persue their side projects (Ramallah and Sinners& Saints) until BFB's contract was up.

    So maybe you are right...
