It's been a long time coming but Tyrannosaurus Hives was worth it. The Hives' first release proper full length in nearly four years couldn't be more to the point as it slams through 12 tracks in a half hour, but those 12 tracks easily let the record live up to the might its title boasts. The band is still charmingly and consciously self absorbed but with this effort (like it's predecessor) that bravado, however tongue-in-cheek, is warranted.

"Walk Idiot Walk" blatantly lifts from The Who's "I Can't Explain" but as a single it couldn't be more perfect. It's perhaps the band's best example of their heart-in-the-60s / head-in-the-70s songwriting (particularly evident on video where Howlin' Pelle Almqvist claims Sir Mick's swaggering chicken-walk for his own). The fact that this band can put out singles that simultaneously ape the Rolling Stones, The Stooges, Buzzcocks and The Who and yet sound distinctly "Hives" is a feat in itself. Almqvist is the real star of the record, as he proves himself one of the most distinctive rock frontmen today. While he never really leaves the "excited-shout" range his voice has unmistakable character and his lyrical delivery is absolutely top notch throughout the entire record.

"A Little More For Little You" matches up an incredibly infectious pop chorus with jittering verses to create a one of the record's high points. It's followed by the simply phenomenal "B Is for Brutus." The band chugs along in a rhythmically propelled tune while the lead guitar, distorted and buzzing like a severely ill tempered hornet, churns out an instantly memorable and completely sinister sounding riff. "Diabolic Scheme" is a curious track and unlike anything The Hives have done before. A string section screeches and jumps behind the band's pulsing guitar (or is it a synth? It's hard to tell at times). The song's like a warped new-wave version of the violin murder-theme from Psycho (and yet also features one of the band's more interesting and chaotic guitar solos). "Dead Quote Olympics" is a surprisingly fun bit of light hearted jangling pop in a collection of it that would make Pete Shelley proud.

Tyrannosaurus Hives is a good summer record, just shy of truly great. The majority of it's tracks are holding pattern with Veni Vidi Vicious (which is a high standard in itself) but on a few tantalizing songs ("Brutus" and "Diabolic" in particular) gleams of brilliance shine through. One only hopes that it's not another four years until the next chapter.

The Hives blew up because on infuential English label (Poptones or something) started promoting them heavily across the UK. They got picked up, the American press reads the British press, and a psuedo-phenomena is born (see the White Stripes, The Strokes, The Vines).

Its worth noting that none of the aforementioned bands are going to over take Linkin Park anytime soon. The Hives last record never went gold, the first Strokes barely made it (I'd guess their new one isn't even close) and i don't think ANYONE has gone platinum--maybe the White Stripes?. Not even an overplayed iPod commercial could make Jet superstars.

I'm sure the major label industry can sleep soundly knowing that they can still make hits out boring mediocracy like Hoobastank.

I don't know if my review will get posted, as I said much the same thing Adam said but slightly more critical. I really like this band, I think the record is just okay, but I will say this about them:

    NEW BOMB TURKS.

Two years ago, the Hives put together an awesome comp that came free with Kerrrag! "Hometaping Vol. 1" (I don't live out there anymore and don't know if there was ever a Vol. 2) had a bunch of awesome stuff on it, from the Detriot Cobras and the Dirtbombs to the Dead Kennedys, the Saints, and the Damned. And then they put on "Id Slips In" by the New Bomb Turks.

Previously, I thought the Hives sounded just like sped-up Ramones with some Stooges swagger thrown in and the New Bomb Turks were one of those weird bands my older brother had that I never properly checked out (and another aging garage band Epitaph picked up when they were past their prime). This track just exposes the whole thing. The only the Hives don't replicate are the guitar solos. This isn't bad--the Hives are still awesome, but its always good to know where it all comes from

The HIVES are refreshing in a mainstream music scene of depressingly shite bands. I've seen a few live vids on MTV and they are sloppy and energetic, and the thing that strikes me most about them is their ability to actually *shock* write their own riffs instead of every other 'alternative' band that will either re-hash the 'When I Come Around' chords, or if they're emo, NIRVANA's 'Something In The Way'.

    That's fine then.

My friends who don't like the Hives just don't enjoy their music, which is the same way I feel, although it's for different reasons. They consider them to be unoriginal, I just don't like the music. I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan of straight up rock n roll, I wouldn't turn it off it happened to be on, but I wouldn't seek it out.

The thing is, I can see how bands like this are embraced for their personas. But at the same time, people take Avenged Sevenfold totally seriously (fans and haters alike).

Posted by BSD on 2004-07-23 16:59:56
    My Score:

I've heard plenty of metalcore, Forty. I'm not into the scene, but I've gone to about ten metalcore shows with fairly varied lineups. Aside from that, most of my friends are fauxcore kids and admit that they don't listen to real hardcore. They're ex-metalheads acting like most kids, jumping on the latest trend. So I've heard plenty of metalcore as well gone to the shows. I have a right to decide that metalcore is a weak mix of the worst of metal and worst of hardcore.

As for my Hives presumptions, if these friends of yours who love '77 punk hate the Hives, it's probably because they're on MTV. Honestly, if you look at the music, the Hives are one of the closest things to a '77 rock band.

I don't care if they're "punk" or not. They aren't. I just think it's great that a band is coming along and pissing off the scene kids, the emo kids, the metalcore kids, etc. while on MTV and playing some great rock n roll.

I'm not saying you're an emo kid because you don't like the Hives, I'm saying that most people who are genuinely into rock n roll and have been for a while will at least see the Hives as a sign of hope for the future of the art.

Really, I don't consider hardcore or metalcore rock n roll. It's "highly" structured noise, but it doesn't rock. Metalcore bands' riffs don't sound like rock n roll to me.

And that's why I'll take the Hives over Dillinger Escape Plan. When I want to hear noise rock (which I consider all modern forms of metal and newer forms of punk), I'll put on DEP or Melt-Banana or whatever. When I want to hear rock, I'll listen to the Hives or the Ramones or the Dead Boys, etc. Rock n roll happens to be my preference.

Punk on MTV? What? "Punk" on MTV? Isn't that some sort of paradox or something, I mean, aren't they typically considered diametrically opposed. That is kind-of like a website being organized to promote "Punk Music" that uses credit cards for admittance. Interpunk.com is just about that "punk" and it puts up a fascade just like the Hives. When was the last time a major chain of stores like "Best Buy" was ever considered a place where you could go to fulfill your "punk" needs?

I suppose that the $10 used to procure this CD is a modest cost for any CD. If you like anything, heavy emphasis on the ANYTHING, then go to your nearest "punk-retailer: Best Buy" and pick up a copy, while you are at it you should pick up an F'n Punk Slurpee from Wal-Punk-Mart. If you don't then don't. That is just one Manman's opinion. He doesn't like "syndicated punk" music for the masses of teens.

"It's kind of sad that playing rock n roll influenced rock n roll is considered a "schtick". I think the Hives' music is more genuine than DEP and certainly less of a fashion phad than Avenged Sevenfold.

Couldn't Worn Thin be considered a "schtick" band? Any band that's playing back to basics music isn't going to be all that groundbreaking, but the Hives put their own twist on the retro-rock sound. They aren't boring like the Strokes or influenced by shitty bands (the Vines, any metalcore band).

I wouldn't call the Hives a "schtick" band, because their albums are basically modeled after old rock records. Intro, rock tracks, 1 slow song, more fast tracks, and a closer. What's great to me is that a band can have such good influences (Ramones, Stooges, even Minor Threat), make good music, and be popular.

This is music that the kids with emo haircuts will hate and little girls will find confusing. This is music that genuine rock n roll lovers will agree is fantastic and the rest will try to forget about, and I can't remember a band like this getting on MTV and being able to sell their records for 10 bucks at Best Buy in my life time.

If you like metalcore, nu-core, fauxcore, emo, or pop-punk, you'll probably hate this. If you love the Rolling Stones, the Sonics, the Stooges, and first wave punk, you'll think it's great.

If you don't... Have fun with those Winger bootlegs you got off eBay.

    -BSD"

Haha, yes BSD, the Hives have come to crush all the pretenders and bring punk back to its roots!

I knew that comment would set you off, but I was mainly referring to their supposed attitude, not their music. I think Avenged Sevenfold is a "schtick band" too, I just find their act a little more entertaining than The Hives.

Funny, you either like the Hives or you're an emo kid, great. Then you go out and insult metalcore bands, most of which you've never listened to. At least I listen to bands before I write them off.

Not liking the Hives says nothing about me, aside from "I don't like the Hives." I know plenty of people who like the first wave of punk that think the Hives are shit, so it's obviously not just those mysterious emo kids who don't like them.

Whoever doesn't like AC/DC, well, you're just being foolish. I admit, there are some less than appealing songs that they've made (Big Balls), but the amount of quality, no frillls rock n' roll that they've created is amazing.

You have to take this band in context. Sure, they were just another simplistic rock n' roll band in the 70s, but after Bon Scott's death and their return in the 80s, they kept rocking their simplistic rock n' roll. You can listen to their entire discography and hear the same basic rock music all the way through.

Most bands didn't survive the 70s without making a disco song. The 80s was dominated by hair-metal and new-wave. And yet, AC/DC continued to rock.

for the record, abracadaver is also cradle of filth's imprint (under sony, i believe)
also, i'm ready to hear this record, despite my misgivings about the quality of their live performances...if anyone has the issue of spin magazine from about this time last year you can read a letter to the editor that i wrote about how the hives disillusioned me for life with that special mtv concert they did a while after vvv came out (that crap sucked big time...no distortion on the guitars at all)

abracadaver has been used before the lawrence arms too. but as forthis cd, i dont really like it that much. i think the first song is awesome but the rest i think is kinda ehh.. but i have only listened to it a few times. i love barely legal and i like vvv a lot too, but this seems to me to take the worst points of both. "BAD. BAD. they tried to stuff a dead body inside of me" thats one of the best lyrics ever.

That's why they're out playing tour dates right now, because they're just that tired of remaining in a band.

That's also why they put out a new track on some obscure Fat comp.

The will not quit after this album, but they might change name, since most bands only do three great records (a thought that now is starting to change, since they begin to enjoy the later work of some of the bands that inspire them). They have thought about the name "The Best"... which would be so The Hives

garage rock is quickly becomming a dying fad which is sad considering what a genre it was; "96 tears", "devil with a blue dress", "surfin bird", "gloria", "louie, louie", "nobody but me"..........oh wait that died 30 years ago. but in all fairness and in all of the carbon-copied "garage rock" that is overly-produced(its not called "garage" rock for no reason) and lacking of creativity and evolution, the hives are a good band. the guy, nick i believe is his name, had a voice made for this kind of music and has more heart and soul then pretty much any other band out there now.

the hives "the" in the name is really the only comparison to the other "garage rock" revolution bands, because these guys have always been more punk rooted then the others, and while they all have put out what I think are albums equally as good as their last go round, The Vines still kick the most ass, bar none. This is a sick record though

I fucking hate the new Television reissues. Their albums, like the Ramones, are long enough for what they are. I don't need forty minutes of the Ramones, I need 25, but if you're going to add on tracks, don't make them demo versions of songs I just heard! The only good Ramones re-issue was "Leave Home", and that's because the bonus tracks are from a live show at the Whiskey. Get the original LP/CD version of "Marquee Moon" budjet priced and appreciate the great work of art as it was meant to be heard.

Tyrannosaurus Hives is the most highly anticipated album by the Hives since the dawn of mankind. The dumb will nod and stomp in approval. The smart will debate its power forever.

Tyrannosaurus Hives is not an album put together by “dudes” “jamming”.
It’s the result of young men tireless in their search for “better” and “more”.

Tyrannosaurus Hives is not a record outlined to fit your life. You must fit your life to IT.
