About two years ago, the alternative weekly in the East Bay ran a story about local up-and-comers the Pattern (if you don't remember them, you aren't the only one) and the burgeoning garage rock revival. A major label publicist interviewed in the story had this to say about the new movement, which she called "small-scale rock."

"Small-scale rock is the new ska."

While garage rock has far surpassed ska in longevity, some key similarities remain. Take the new Hives record, "Tyrannosaurus Hives." Like many a ska band, they wear suits, sport stupid faces on their albums, espouse the Bible according to Devo, and deliver lyrics devoid of meaning (this can be excused-they're Swedish, after all). However, they also supply a steady stream of upbeat pop goodness that manages to hold up for the entire album.

"Tyrannosaurus Hives" main fault is that its not as good as "Veni Vidi Vicious." The mid-tempo rock songs are well represented. The first single, "Walk Idiot Walk" is probably as good as "Hate to Say I Told You So" and the ironic ballad in the middle, "Diabolic Scheme," is wonderful. But none of the 12 tracks can match the sheer violence and energy of songs like "The Hives Introduce the Metric System in Time." The record feels like a whole lot of pressure from the powers that be to write a steady stream of radio ready singles choked the band's ability to relax and kick some ass.

"Tyrannosaurus Hives" is by no means an awful record. The Hives are still one of the best bands that gets played on national radio. But if you're searching for another balls-to-the-wall rock record, your money is probably better spent digging up some old New Bomb Turks albums.

This Album Is Awesome and If You Like This Get Some New Bomb Turks Shit!!! A for this CD and NBT

Decent review, killer album.
The hives have nothing to do with EMO, geeeze.
Anybody care to name a better band to listen to currently?
I think you all should buy both T Hives and a New Bomb Turks CD or two. Then buy some T(I)NC and Refused and you will have heard some great rock that most people haven't heard.
This album is an impressive follow-up to VVV, I think. Imagine the pressure for this album, after being part of that gay ass "garage rock revival" and being so critically acclaimed plus promoting yourself so much and saying how great you are all the time. If you delivered a mediocre album after all that it would be all over.

i dont consider this emo, although emo is a horrible trend id like to say you people pay too much attention to image. you complain about band's image's but thats all you look at. it effects the way you understand the music. when i look at hives i see good old rocknroll, rolling stones

Obviously, the meaning and symbolism of the album title was too much for the person below to comprehend.

Amazing album, gets my vote as best of the year thus far. Blows away anything I've listened to this year, underground or mainstream.

major label ugly poser band...dumb generic and the tyrant lizard hives? what the fuck is that supposed to mean? a palientologist's nightmare...a music lover's nightmare.

Ska's been around longer than punk garage rock like Stooges... Neither are phads to real music fans.

"What's that shit about swedes and not be able to write lyrics. This only shows that the reviewer doesn't know a shit about swedish punk-music. Ever heard Voice of a generation, Randy or No fun at all?"

I think you just proved his point dude"

I dunno about you but when I think of Swedish music the first band that comes to mind is the Refused...

Yeah, the T(I)NC record should be out in the States soon, if I'm not mistaken. The release date on this site was for Europe. It's out in the U.K. about now, and I'm guessing in the U.S. in the next week. Can't be sure though, since it's American releasing it there, as opposed to Burning Heart.

I've heard it. It'll get bashed, 'cause it's different to their previous records. At first I was a little hesitant, but I've been listening to it for about a week now, and it's really grown on me. I think the lyrics are better this time around.

Oh, and to the guy below me, the Darkness are not garage rock, and they weren't manufactured by a major. They'd been kicking around the U.K. for a couple of years before they made it big.

there is a scene for this music, but its stuck between rock bands that play on the bar circuit and just play no frills rock and roll, take the hives old record label in the states, gearhead records, with its roster, or even with the international noise conspiracy, there were bands playing that type of music, or with the white stripes, holly golightly and her british cohorts have been doing really great warm rock records for the last 2 decades, and people think jack white discovered her. But when these bands get big, the "scene" becomes them plus 8 bands the majors made up, like jet, or the darkness, and the whole community gets left behind, history gets rewritten to show these bands all coming from nowhere, and the bands that have never been a part of the community get a free pass.

Is there an actual scene for this crap or is it just hype created that people caught onto and made a faux-scene out of?

FortyMinutesWest (July 29, 2004)

I like No Fun At All, but some of their lyrics are pretty bad.

Hipster emo is for future Republicans.

What an ignorant review. Hey buddy don't quit your day job...

Cos (July 29, 2004)

"racism and ignorance don't make a good review. ska was around before garage rock. the swedish also know english just about as well as any of us, if not better. ass."

Everyone can disagree with my review and trash my opinion and writing style--that's fine. I'll take exception with barbes thrown towards my character.

Ska vs. Garage Rock: the comment I reprinted was implying that, like ska, garage rock will be moderately popular for a short time in mainstream music and disappear. My knowledge and love for ska are both deep; if you want to have a competition, bring it on.

Racism: get a fucking sense of humor. There have been many things written about how the Hives stumble over their English and many people (myself included) find it endearing. But its worth noting if you're going to try to find a message in the lyrics and come up empty.

and I feel like I need to reiterate: I like this album. its just not as good as "Veni Vidi Vicious"

the reviewer couldn't have gotten any more wrong. i think this album is fucking incredible! it's very intense, the riffs are fucking catchy, and their songwriting got much better. an instant classic.

"p.s. Emo is for people that will never, ever get laid."

emo is for potential stalkers.

Anonymous (July 28, 2004)

"p.s. Emo is for people that will never, ever get laid."

Absolutely incorrect.

That's practically the whole point. Emo hipsters get action while complaining about having none--thus garnering pity and getting a "deep" image--and getting more.

Anonymous (July 28, 2004)

While garage rock has far surpassed ska in longevity

ska will always have a fan-base

"p.s. Emo is for people that will never, ever get laid."

i like emo, and i have sex quite a bit. i like to pleasure the ladies.

"While garage rock has far surpassed ska in longevity"

Where do you get that from, ska was popular for atleast a couple years.

slippy (July 28, 2004)

I liked the other review of this better.

Anonymous (July 28, 2004)

I liked the lead singer better when he was Mick Jagger. Why don't you do us all a favor Mick and go back to blowing David Bowie off and trying to find that one last rock to smoke, so it will truly be the end of all gimmicky rock! The swedes should only export their women and leave their music in their garages!

Anonymous (July 28, 2004)

Speaking of T(I)NC, am I the only one wondering what happend to Armed Love? I thought it was supposed to be out today (even tho this website had it listed as being out on the 20th on the side), but I can't find it in any stores around here. Also, Amazon and Interpunk don't have it even listed as an upcoming release on their sites.

Anonymous (July 28, 2004)

This review was fucking horrible, your comparing ska to garage rock why? because a few of the bands have dress codes. your a fucking douche. horrible horrible review.... in that case, the stones are a "ska fad." The beatles were a "ska fad." go to scenes like the east bay scene in cali, this might be a fad to a couple assbag 13 yr old girls, and sure it might die out at some point, but just because the strokes and the hives are the only ones on mtv doing it does not mean ppl are going to look back on it like flock of seaguls. those girls are also going to be dropping extacy and listening to "trance jungle dance" music in 4 years. But fuck them that doesnt mean that these bands dont have something new and something with longevity. This is because music is coming to a head and people are sick of the bullshit and just want some rock n roll. if thats ska then fucking shoot me in the head right now.

ps. put on your old two tones, and your checkered hat and give this cd a listen, then look in the mirror..... then well see whats more of a fad, you fucking assbag

this is pretty damn good rock album.

i remember the pattern!

Anonymous (July 27, 2004)

This album is fucking great and everyone who says it sucks has only heard the single and not the rest of the album. Yes, the lame-ass crowds they draw who think "the" bands are great and name drop The White Stripes etc. suck ass. But really, are they any better than the whiny, dorky, pussy crowds that bands like Dashboard Confessional and Taking Back Sunday draw? I think not. If you like real rock music listen to this album, the New Bomb Turks, T(I)NC, Zeke etc....If you like crying in your room by yourself, writing love letters to a girl you don't have a chance in hell of getting, dressing like a jackass and wetting your bed, go listen to Chris Carrabba and Morissey.

p.s. Emo is for people that will never, ever get laid.

OK that was supposed to be LOSER, not LOSERS. Forgive me, I'm stoned and high on morphine.

"A bunch of lame indy kids with their shirts & ties and fucking jail-bait preppy girls who would name-drop bands like the Strokes & White Stripes in their conversations with each other."

HAHAHAHA wow that's the fucking definition of a LOSERS.

Listen to T(I)NC

Anonymous (July 27, 2004)

i like this album, but agree with the reviewer that your money is better spent with the new bomb turks... now if i can only find my lost copy of pissing out the poison i'll be happy.

Anonymous (July 27, 2004)

I saw the Hives in concert just recently and even though the Hives put on a good preformance I couldn't get over the fact on how much the crowd just really sucked. A bunch of lame indy kids with their shirts & ties and fucking jail-bait preppy girls who would name-drop bands like the Strokes & White Stripes in their conversations with each other.
