Sometimes inspiration will come on a dark rainy night as you're walking home from watching a movie at a friends house, jump up from the bushes and kick you in the stomach, it is in that instant of terror - your pituitary gland sends a signal to your brain – and you have to make a choice, fight or flight? Do you run or stand your ground? If you’ve happened to be listening to your headphones with PMFS spinning - you begin to levitate, a light saber appears in your hand, laser beams shoot from your eyes and a Bahamut screams from the heavens to blast the enemy with ancient and powerful magic. The inspiration becomes part of you, no longer a phantom lurking in the bushes – it has been assimilated. Without such a nerdy revalatory metaphor of course! Now what does one do with that inspiration? Such vague and ethereal metaphors are for space cadets and poets, or coffee house wordsmiths that like to listen to themselves talk (and Magik the Gathering Alumni). That inspiration, that music that comes from Planes Mistaken For Stars gets in your soul, mingles with your hopes and aspirations and becomes the driving force behind your work day, bus ride, trip to target to purchase toilet paper – whatever. Garedmikeymattchuck make rock and roll palpable, they make it that much more edgy. A serrated blade drug slowly across an exposed mid drift. They are making Rock and Roll dangerous again. A cello opens the track “Spring Divorce” and the pummeling drums of Bonzo incarnate, Mikey Ricketts (AKA Mongo) is like listening to a tornado in 5.1 digital surround. “Bastards” follows two tracks later and doesn’t stop the rock, it intensifies it, if that is even possible in this rock and roll riot. Up In the Them Guts was recorded at the Mogis brother’s Presto Studio’s in Lincoln NB, and the untold talent of the entire group was finally fully realized. AJ Mogis was instrumental in contributing to Cursive’s, The Ugly Organ and now with Up In Them Guts, he is destined to become the most sought after production man in the indie rock world. Its an anolog grit Mogis adds, and its brilliant so long as Planes never ends up sounding like some overproduced version of 'gasp' Funeral for a Friend. Each song on Up in Them Guts is more impressive than the next. I’m breathless, it’s on the second (third, fourth) spin right now and I can’t even indulge anymore metaphors. Well, maybe one more - their music is blood, drink it in small doses. Please login or register to post comments. What are the benefits of having a Punknews.org account?
These guys actually do rock out with their cocks out.... Instead of giving metaphors, you should writing a review. this review didnt tell me much about this album, other than the reviewer is in love wtih it Gayest review ever. Fall onto a knife. best album of the 21st century. i listned to their ecard and started jerking off immediately. "Each song on Up in Them Guts is more impressive than the next" if you want bands to sound exactly like they do on CD then you prolly wont like them live. if you like to see bands practicaly kill themselves on stage and deliver one of the most intenst performances you'll ever see, then you will like them live. this is dirty rock and roll, and i love it. Are they better on album? I, personally, thought they sounded like shit live in Cleveland. i'd like to open you up with a straight razor and see what your imagination looks like. its okay if you don't get it, don't take offense just write you own review, form your own opinion, then other boring people can comment on what you write and toss around terms like wit and retarded in the same breath. wanker. Stop it with these terrible reviews. These vain attempts at wit and intellect are fucking terrible. Tell us what the album sounds like, not how your retarded imagination interprets it Way to make shit way too complicated. fuck off, this band is ILL, NUFF SAID When you say "nuff said" you sound like a WWF superstar shut the fuck up, this band rules, this record rules, nuff said. uh, no, a small minority is talking shit. i didnt say a small minority doesnt like the band. i think most of the people who take the time to check out their music end up liking them though, because i've met very few people who've actually heard them who dont like them. Magic the Gathering rocks your ass. a "small minority" of people don't like this band?? riiiiight... 'im talking about the obvious shit talk that has nothing to do with their music, not people who can intelligently say if they think its good or not. im talking about the obvious shit talk that has nothing to do with their music, not people who can intelligently say if they think its good or not. hmmm....maybe not everyone thinks they are good... the cover art of this folds out into a bigger picture i think this is their newest member... Also, it might just be me, but that cover really reminds me of the Lawrence Arms album cover with the guy lying in the corner... How can anything sound more over-produced than Funeral For A Friend anyway? it rocks only in the way that planes can make it rock. use that definition and you'll be ok. :) sorry, but that review was pretty bad. All I know about this album is that it "rocks", and there are many definitions for "rocks." one of the best records that will come out this year, and certainly the most human. http://buddyhead.com/music/planes/ wheres the new velvet teen review then get their records, listen to their music, read their lyrics. i dont get the big deal about these guys weird, i didn't think this would actually get posted as a review. with so many dumbshit bands doing the same dumbshit things, most reviews end up sounding exactly the same - stupid and contrived and about as typical and boringly informative of their derivative rock band they are reviewing. i guess i was going at it from a different approach. i was listening to the ecard when i wrote it so thats what came to mind. I'm going to try listening to it after i smoke a joint and beat Zelda the windwaker for the 8th time. nerds like punk rock too. now if i can just get the people from no idea to send me a check for all the hard work i put into it, i'll be able to buy San Andreas when it comes out in a couple months. i just popped like sixteen boners. http://buddyhead.com/music/planes/ i cant say i wasnt scared because i had high hopes for this one. self titled and knife in the marathon are classics, and i could never really get into fuck with fire as much as some people. im proud to say i listened to the ecard and i will be able to sleep well tonight knowing that my favorite band put out yet another classic. Can't wait to cop this record, can't wait to see them Tues. granted I get work off. Arghhhhhh Check out the "The Pretty Weapons" on Uprising Records. I'm having a little trouble getting much sense of a review out of this! I can tell you like it though. If only it were true... do marketing agents come off like they smoked a pound of grass before they write things? because this is how the review comes across to me, and its the furthest thing from what i would think a marketing agent would write. I have Fuck with Fire, it's alright. I've heard some mp3s from this album, they're pretty good. Next time don't post a review as if you are the bands marketing agent. stupid trying-to-sound-smart review... Posted by sickboi on 2004-07-28 14:08:40 1 for the review. Is there even a review in this? How is the production? These guys are notorious for shitty production. The only yardstick that matters: this is noise...DEP is noise bad review (even though it was positive, it was just poorly written), amazing band, amazing record. fin. After reading that interview, I proclaim these men... douches. HOLY SHIT! I'm speechless after reading that... not sure if i like this better than self-titled or fuck with fire yet, but those are my two favorite albums of all time. this may actually take over top spot. im on my third listen and its just finally sinking in how amazing this is. http://buddyhead.com/music/planes/ These guys are crazy, good tunes, but crazy. If you don't believe me go to buddyhead.com and look in the gossip archives section. I don't remember what issue so your going to have to do your homework, but if you find the interview they do with buddyhead it will floor you! It is about what some of the band members did to some dude to get money for tour. Insane story! ive been waiting for this record to come out for a long time, and from what ive heard of it on the e-card, its definitely not a disappointment. going to order it now. this record is fucking brilliant. "why do people keep asking what this record is like, if you took 10 seconds to go to their site it is very apparent that they have put the whole cd online so you can hear it for yourself" fuck shit up. Score is for Final Fantasy reference. Outstanding release; if you want to hear what music is going to sound like in five years, just pick up Miss Machine and Up in Them Guts today. No Idea can do no wrong. one of the best things about this record is it sounds like nothing else out there, not even their own records, which is a true testament to this band and their perseverance to evolve. Doh, meant "as well written as this review is" As well-written as this album is, it really doesn't say much at all about this album other than that it's dark and scary. The first time I spun up PMFS was on a No Idea comp, and I kinda filed them away under "check out later." Everyone started talking again once they released the e-card for this one, so I decided to give them another chance. Fucking blown away. the vocals are kind of rough on some songs, but on others they are more like self titled, but why do people keep asking what this record is like, if you took 10 seconds to go to their site it is very apparent that they have put the whole cd online so you can hear it for yourself no idea is continuing to put out some good shit, just wait for the new hot water music album, you will ruin whatever pair of pants you are wearing at the time The self-titled CD is their best work thus far, although I have not heard this CD yet. How are the vocals? I heard the song that No Idea had available for download and I didn't really like the vocals. Is the CD like that? Horrible review. i agree. the review is awkward and doesnt make a ton of sense. it only talks about 2 songs. This album is incredible. The PMFS website says that unless you preordered it from Interpunk or No Idea it'll take a little while more to get it in stores. Nonetheless, this album is amazing. Go pick it up as soon as you can and while you're at it, pick up their selftitled album and fuck with fire... horrible review. next time, enough with the biology lesson and give us actual descriptions of what the band sounds like beyond a couple sentences. this is way better than fuck with fire, the production is allot better too. i really want to hear this album, but ive never heard the band i dont think, so i wouldnt know what to expect. how does "fuck with fire" compare to this album? there was plenty of that album on slsk. any song reccomendations? you m ust not looked hard if you cant find it one of my favorite bands. A fun, interesting, well-written, though utterly uninformative review. Good job (seriously). actually you basically summed it up quite nicely in one part: this will easily be record of the year for a lot of people including myself. |
