When John Nolan and Shaun Cooper quit Taking Back Sunday, many fans feared impending doom for Amityville, Long Island's newly crowned "kings" of the emo scene.

First there was the news that the band split, causing endless unecessary tears and message board posts. Then came the rumors, the name calling and the finger pointing. But then something strange happened. Enter Fred Mascherino, ex-Breaking Pangaea guitarist, and bassist Matt Rubano and the gossip of a new lineup became a reality. While Nolan brought with him wit and charisma to the Taking Back Sunday sound and aestetic, Mascherino and Rubano flesh out the guitar and bass playing and interject a more mature twist to the saga that is Taking Back Sunday.

Where You Want To Be comes to us following a string of relentless tours on the strength of the bands fantastic debut, Tell All Your Friends. Not only does the new record pick up where the band left off, it proves there is life after Nolan. In fact, it dares listeners to question Mascherino's abilities as guitar player and second vocalist. And whether you question him or not, you can't escape his style.

Where You Want to Be, like all albums, has its hits and misses. In no way is this Taking Back Sunday's masterpiece. Instead, it is a fine effort. A record that is good enough to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump tag. Throughout the course of its 11 tracks, frontman Adam Lazarra's weathered voice slithers up one side of you and down the other. It is hard to deny the fact this kid sings with every bit of his soul. And yes, the album is slickly produced. But that is what happens when a band is given a slightly bigger budget and the ability to tweak knobs and manipulate sounds in the studio.

"The Union" and "Set Phasers to Stun" come off sounding like the cuts that did not make it to the final version of Tell All Your Friends. They are not strikingly different in style or substance. But tracks like "Bonus Mosh Pt. 2" and "Decade Under The Influence" sound like a bigger and better TBS. A TBS that has some experience under their belts. Maybe a band who are finally morphing into that one cohesive unit, finding that magic niche that all musicians hope to discover when writing and performing music together.

Where You Want To Be is a record that should not disappoint fans of Taking Back Sunday. Instead, it should ready them for the next serving of heartfelt, lovesick rock and roll this band is sure to deliver. In the first 20 seconds of "Set Phasers to Stun" Lazarra belts out, "I'm sorry it took me so long". Thats a fitting opening line to this band's second chapter and new beginning.

it doesnt matter people. as long as the music makes u happy you don't really have to care what others have to say about it. you like it or you dont. you really don't have a reason to bash what other people like. I think tell all your friends was great, and where you want to be was pretty good too. So there, lets not fight shall we?

    My Score:

This band is nothing without John Nolan. The chemistry is completely gone, because the new guy, whatever his name is, can't support Adam's voice like John could. THe music itself is also much lamer. That aside, Bonus Mosh Pit Pt.2 is still a good song, and so is the last song on the album (I don't even know the title, because frankly, I don't see the point of listening to this album when the former one is so superior.)

I Cannot Understand how that band's new CD is even considered emo, the lyrics have lost all meaning and the tone of voice in the singers just show it all, no frustration or anger... NOTHING! just looks like these kids are pretty damn happy about everything.

As everyone already knows, john nolan was in taking back sunday, and co-wrote the songs on tell all your friends, and when john nolan left everyone said taking back sunday was a sinking ship and john nolan was the only thing that had held it together with his oh so wonderful wrighting skills.

Well now that they have both let out their new CDs i can safely say that taking back sunday did fine without john, and the lyrics that were done without him are absolutly amzing, while johns CD isn't all that amazing, its quite predictable.

Taking Back Sunday is honestly one of the worst bands I have ever heard. They have 0 talent and whoever likes them should be shot over and over again for provoking this shitty music. All their songs sound the same and they are all about the same things. They have no comparison to bands like Led Zeppelin. Face the facts, Taking Back Sunday is very untalented. They are no different from any of those shitty other bands like Simple Plan or Good Charlotte.

I love "Where you want to be" I think it's mixed better than TAYF and Fred has better vocal control than John Nolan. it's true that Lazzara has some trouble live with his pitch control... but a show that energetic certainly makes up for a sharp note here or there. And as for the songs, I like how you can sort of tell where they're going before they get there... the breakdown, the sing-a-long chorus... You can tell where they're going and it's where I want to be (pun intended)

Look past the name and the history. Just listen to the album and forget about this band having the same name as the one that released "Tell All Your Friends". This isn't a stellar album, but it's by no means deserving of less than 3. The only track I can't listen to is "New American Classic"...I thought that somehow I got a Dashboard track in my playlist by accident.

anyone who thinks that this cd "doesn't deserve a rating of over 3 stars" is completely wrong. obviously you are NOT a true TBS fan, and if you were, you would accept the change. it definantly shows how great a writer adam lazzara is, and also he co-wrote most of the songs with fred. so give him some credit. and if he sucked at guitar, he wouldn't be in the band would he? i mean eddie, adam, and mark are in no way stupid people and wouldn't just bring in a guy that has no talent. just listen to the cd and you'll see how good it is.

this is awesome with a huge variety from an acoustic in "New American Classic" to the usual upbeat songs. The lyrics are truly, and as always, something special and amazing. My Score:

Well well I have read alot of these comments on the album and I have to say there are alot of idiots out there. this album in any way does not deserve anything over three stars. In comparison to "tell all your friends" this record is nothing. They have lost all there originality and now fit in with the common pop records out today. I read a reveiw saying that Fred is a way better guitar player and singer than john was. I fell back in my chair from laughter, I know who ever wrote that probably didn't have an ounce of talent in guitar, and as for the singing from who ever said freds voice compliments adams better than johns did, I am at a loss of words for that.
most of the people who have given this record a very high rating are probably really into awfull bands like simple plan and are really into the pop punk crap out today, and probably no older than 14. I have also given this record a chance to for all you people that have said just give it a chance and the only track on this album that I like to listen to is "set phasers to stun" the lyrics "im sorry it took me so long" just really stand out to me and its not as pop as the other songs. just to let all of the people who said the next record couldn't be as good as "tell all your friends" well before john left they had a couple of new songs written, I heard 2 of them and they where very very TAYF worthy. Who ever posted that this album is as passable as new found glorys cd is right. I could go on and on about this record and how it has its cons but i'll cut it short. -take care

and that is the lamest attempt to sound smart i have ever heard, it's impossible to use "flesh out" and "the saga that is taking back sunday" in the same sentence and sound smart, that sentence in itself makes no sense, it just sounds like it does because of the choice of words.

i don't see how somebody can honestly say that this album is a huge drop from the last one. take john nolan off of his little cloud in your eyes. the first one was good, this one isn't quite as good. the first one wasn't brilliant, and this one isn't awful.

It means that they have a member who is a fan of that band. And American's have no idea who Busted or McFly are so ur comment is even more stupid.

anyway this album's really good. Can't decide if it beats TOYF but I think it's a good album regardless of whether it's punk or not. I like good music, not music with a cool tag attached to it.

hell, to simplify matters, compare breaking pangaea to straylight run. i know who i'd rather listen to any day of the week.

What I want to know is, where is the BUSTED and McFLY reviews? Busted were wearing a THURSDAY shirt on TV today, and sound and look exactly like THE ATARIS, TAKING BACK NOVEMBER, etc - this stuff is not the alternative, and it is not punk. Just like Busted and McFly. If anyone can tell me the difference, please do because I am lost!!!

"The Union" and "Set Phasers to Stun" come off sounding like the cuts that did not make it to the final version of Tell All Your Friends.

what the hell is wrong with you? the only track that sounds like it can belong on TALY is slowdance on the inside.

This cd is growing on me but I still have to skip past certain songs. I miss the violent lyrics though so that doesn't help.

This review is a lot more on target than the previous. Props for giving a more objective review. It wasn't the greatest, but it proved that this band isn't collapsing without Nolan.

Why does the lead singer act like he's got an advanced case of the shakes? Good Lord, just calm down. It's not that intense.

On a positive note, the guitarist has a nice beard.

I mean no slander or harm with this following comment:

Since its release last tuesday I've only sold this cd to girls who look to be about 14. This is not an embellishment, lie, or an attempt to further my disgust for this band. This is the plain truth, as sad as that may be

why give such a god awful record by this shitty band a second review?

you should give planes mistaken for stars a second review because up in them guts is an amazing record and the review you guys posted on it makes no sense even tho the reviewer liked the record.

    My Score:

bigger production does not mean better production, we all know a band gets more money second time around.

the only appeal that set taking back sunday apart from teh rest of the emowhore crowd was the duality, the perfect duality, of nolan's screams and lazarra's vocals. those are totally absent here, except on "...slowdance on the inside."

you talk about lazarras voice creeping around, you're right, it cracks, creeps, goes off key and can't even be fixed by protools.

it's a fine effort of an album for a first out demo tape of 19 year olds. an established, or at least established as much as taking back sunday can be, band should not be putting crap like this out.

however, i must commend you for not falling flat on your face in the review. i was figuring one of the OMG DIE TBS 4REAL LIFE people was going to try and review it.

I absolutely love this cd, TAYF is good infact its great, but putting all personal issues aside this cd is fantasitc. Nolan wasn't the only writer to leve TBS seeing how they wrote the cd with jesse lacey (is that his name?) from Brand New. IMO Nolan is a tad bit overrated, I'm not saying he is no good but he is given incredibly to much credit. Adam is a trat and you can argue that his voice isn't great or he can't hold a note BUT this is "punk" not mariah carey. They put on a show that is incredible, When I saw them in 2002 with Rufio/Brand New you could tell they stunned the audience and you knew that nothing but a bright future was ahead..
