Culling its main influence from straight-forward 90s skate punk (namely Lagwagon) and taking it from there, Before Today attempts a mostly melodic punk sound that mixes in the new-school screaming trend, Thursday-ish post-hardcore, odd tempo changes and incomplete efforts of experimentation. Though the band is competent in pulling off these moderately abrupt changeups in tempo, mood, and pacing to give them a slightly different expression from any post-2002 "punk with screams" band, their basic skate punk frame places a few genre-hopping riffs across the board and intertwined almost-ballads that shouldn't warrant the mostly derivative quartet a whole lot of credit, but there's enough going on to savor a few listens.

this website has some wierd reviews, I tried trusting them and bought 2 cds that they rated 4 or above, and they were not good. this cd is effing awesome, the screaming, songwriting, its great. it doesn't deserve this low of a score. there are some great songs on this album, and its totally worth buying. I just get the feeling that all the reviewers on this site don't like this style of music. It's an interesting hybrid but I like it a lot. You are becoming predictible. Waves of contemporary blues and jazz roll in, as “Sight To Frame” begins. And just as quickly, they give way to the vain popping screams of “Roots Beneath Ideals”, track two on Before Today’s debut C.D. (Equal Vision Records) “A Celebration of an Ending”. Like the wicked step child of Iron Maiden, this album seems to be busting at the seems of genre specifications. what the fuck is wrong with "singing/screaming shit"??? this cd is fuckin amazing, and its not pop/ ANYTHING, its punk/hardcore....and its awesome The only likeness that I can find with them and any other band is maybe Story of the Year. I think the way they use harmony in the guitars is great, not to mention the drum line. I give it 5 Stars. The only likeness that I can find with them and any other band is maybe Story of the Year. I think the way they use harmony in the guitars is great, not to mention the drum line. I give it 5 Stars. They are fucking amazing but not street/skate at all. They are more pop/rock with a punk influence. Seriously, where did you pull Lagwagon out of your ass? are u kidding me, this band owns you!!! They sound nothing like lagwagon. They are their own style. The person who reviewed this is quite musically ignorant This sounds nothing like Lagwagon. It's your typical singing/screamer shit!! I dowloaded it and couldnt even get through half of it, and I generally like similar bands. It's not even worth hard drive space. I just got this cd, it's really good so far. it's pretty good! i like the recording quality. Sounds interesting. I don't know how any band could pull off a mix between Thursday and Lagwagon though. |
