Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

A few years back I was talking to a friend of mine about music, and as was the normal routine, we talked about bands we’d “discovered” recently. It was during this discussion that I was introduced to a band with a strange name.

“Dude, I just picked up this new CD, it’s great”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah, it’s this band, Q And Not U…”
“What the fuck kind of name is that?”
“I don’t know, check it out, I’m telling you, it’s great”
“Yeah, sure.”

With that, I had a burned copy of Q And Not U’s No Kill No Beep Beep in my hands. So, did I listen to it in the car on the way home? Nah, I put in something else. How about when I got home? Nah, I think I listened to Bad Religion or something. How about any time that week? Nope. Finally, two weeks later after constant nagging, I grabbed the CD at the last second because I couldn’t think of what I wanted to listen to at work that night. Well, it didn’t take long for Q and not U to show me the error of my ways, and I of course regretted not listening to it sooner. Of course, I couldn’t admit to being wrong, so when my friend asked what I thought, I blatantly lied and said, “I guess it’s ok.” But the fact that I had ordered an actual copy of the record was pretty good evidence that I was full of shit.

So, here we are, now in 2004 and Q And Not U has just released their newest full-length, Power. Power is a record that shows the band expanding its horizons, while maintaining the same energy they’ve shown on their other releases. Parts of this album are dancier than their previous work, but they manage to pull it off without sounding grating or forced. I’ll be honest; music from that mold usually irritates me to no end. Still, I couldn’t help but enjoy the album’s first track, “Wonderful People,” which will surely inspire a different sort of dancing than most of the stuff I review on here. This doesn’t hit nearly as hard as “No Kill No Beep Beep,” but songs like “X-Polynation.” show that the band isn’t about to settle down anytime soon. This is a diverse release, with no two songs following the same formula, with equal amounts of success. What makes this more enjoyable than the other bands trying to put out something danceable is the fact that Q And Not U don’t need to belt you over the head with tired hooks over and over again to be effective, this allows them the freedom to experiment. From the danceable tracks, to the catchy, albeit short “L.A.X.” to the strange “District Night Prayer,” which features vocals that almost bring to mind church hymns, they do just that.

I’ve got to hand it to these guys, they could’ve kept playing the same type of music, I’m sure no one would’ve complained, but they decided to go in another direction. I know some people aren’t going to be happy with this, and I’m willing to bet that the first track left a bitter taste in the mouths of some, but give it time, this is a very strong release that shows the continued progression of a very talented band.

    My Score:

After listening to rock for about 12 years, I had given up and declared rock "dead". Everything began to sound so similar and predictable. Only a few bands really stuck out, Q and not U is one of these bands.

Q and not U has an uncanny ability to make unique and unusualy catchy songs. Even though the first time I hear any of their songs I roll my eyes and think "this is so homo", I always end up jamming it in my car at full volume.

The wonderful thing about this albumn is that it presents new ideas that are very catchy and work well together. Q and not U are able to mix raw punk energy with sugary pop riffs without sounding like fodder for the Blink 182 crowd. The decisions they made to introduce new sound elements are functional and not just stylistic decorations to make it sound "fresh".

As for those reviewers calling this band "elitist". Shut up and stop pretending you know everything. The elitist label is so friggen old; These days; calling someone an elitist has become an indicator of inferiority.

As long as you put yourself into a category - gay, black, female, etc. - you are only fueling the stereotypes. If BSD would've said, "there are two guys kissing..." I don't think we would still be disgusting it even though it is discussing (was that a couple of typos?)
Stop crying and go listen to this excellent album - more than once, though, because the hype may ruin it for you.

Perhaps some day racism will end and we can just call a fag a fag and leave black people out of it. Don't ever compare my struggle to the struggle for gay marriage you stupid fuck. Get it?"

Your struggle? I'm of Croatian descent, when my ancestors came to America in the early 1900's (because of social unrest and fear of war), they were treated like shit, payed 12 cents a day for manual labor, and lived in houses of 20. I hardly consider that MY struggle.

You're just a fucking homophobe when it comes down to it.

Black, white, yellow, whatever, if you consider "fag" an insult, you're a homophobe. Perhaps if your anger hadn't taken over, you'd realize what I meant. In the 1950's and 60's, white kids used "nigger" to insult each other without thinking seriously about what they meant. In the 1990's and 00's, kids call each other "fag".

While popular black culture and fashion has been made mainstream (and don't pull the "we don't act like that at all" routine, because I go to Northeast Highschool, KC, MO and know for a fact that a lot of black kids try to emulate rappers or vice versa), gays are only represented by cartoony, bullshit shows like "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" and "Will and Grace".

    Read into things.

It's a Scrabble reference. In Scrabble, you've got a distinct advantage if you can find a word to make that has a q (worth 10 points) without a u following it, since most of the time if you have a q in your rack - you probably don't have a u. It's all in this book called Word Freak about the wierdos at the World Scrabble Championships that actually memorize word lists and whatnot. Quite a good read, I recommend it.

This site lists all the possible words that are "q and not u" words: http://www.thepixiepit.co.uk/scrabble/words.htm

but come on now, dont say "my struggle" gays have it worse than or just as bad as you now. you act as if blacks have no privelages in school or anything. blacks/minorities have more privaleges in school than i do, and certainly more than if someone is gay. listen i'm sorry that your perhaps your parents and definately your grand and great grand parents and so on had horrible struggles, but you dont. the fact that you have the privalege to get on a computer and post on punknews.org shows that you dont have too much of a hard life at all. whether this is your comp or at a library or whatever. it doesnt matter.

Q and Not U will never be The Faint, and this album is not even close to the filth that is "Wet From Birth".... and "Passwords" is one of their best song ever.

I love this cd, along with all of this band's other stuff. Good review. This one is more danceable in a straight up dancing kind of way, while older stuff was danceable in an indie rock mosh pit kind of way.

Seeing them tonight, hope they play more old stuff. New crap sounds like latter-day Gang of Four or something... More new wave than post-punk.

This isn't about guitar theory. In fact, no bands like this are. That's just what their technically inefficient guitarists like to claim to validate themselves. Fuck that.

I'm in college, but I know jack shit about guitar theory. I can play some stuff, but I couldn't even tell you what chords I was playing.

I don't know how I feel about this record. It's really good for what it is, which to me seemed to be more synth-dance music, but I've been overloaded with that recently. I think I just have to realize that No Kill No Beep Beep was the epitome of what it was, and remaking that record would be boring. Sort of like Blonde Redhead. I love that band, and all of their albums, but they all sort of are the same damn thing.

Anyway, I think I really like this, I'm just being a dick about it because I'm tired of dance music.
