My first experience at the Bottom Lounge, and I gotta say, it's a pretty sweet venue. It was also my first experience seeing (in the words of Space Ghost) some retardos doing some "hardcore dancing." At first, it looked like some kid was trying to do some mid 90s 3rd wave skanking, but then I realized this must be the "hardcore dancing" I had heard about. I was pretty shielded against it in Minneapolis, but I guess more kids go to shows in Chicago, regarding the fact that Chicago is like 40 times the size of my old haunt.

Not Enough Gold was first. I think I could sum it up by saying not enough talent. Seriously. When did Madball go scene?

Wolf And Cub were up next, and played a mediocre variety of metalcore. They had a guitar player who threw out some insane double tapping that even Eddie would be proud of, and overall the music wasn't bad. They were professional about it and played some complicated shit in difficult time. They were getting a rag from the crowd of sixteen year old losers, and I felt bad for them having to play to an unappreciative crowd of Poison The Well fans. They held their own though. Overall a good opening group, getting you excited for the bands to come without sounding like absolute terrible shit.

Tower of Rome took the stage for their record release show, and I must say, I wasn't impressed. They take influence from metalcore, grindcore, and no-wave noise, but they do it sloppily. They sounded bad on stage, like they didn't know how to work their instruments correctly even if they could play them. Some songs were only twelve seconds long, and they took too much time in between songs to start another one. My face went generally unrocked during their set. Plus, their song titles were way too long and uninteresting. A big boo-urns for them.

Daughters destroyed. They knew their shit, knew how to work it, and knew how to rock. First of all, the sound quality was a world of difference, and you can tell that they are a professional touring band, no matter what level of hi-jinx is present on stage. They opened with "And Then The C.H.U.D.S Came," blowing minds all over the place, and hitting every note and chord completely on. The best part is is that the scenester kids had no idea what to do when the music wasn't heavy enough for them to "hardcore dance." As insanely heavy that Daughters is at times, they really are more of a noise group and confused the youth who just wanted to punch people. They played basically all of Canada Songs, with a few tracks that I was unfamiliar with, and managed to ridicule everyone in the crowd while making the crowd love them even more. The kids were going nuts at times, jumping on top of each other to scream in the face of the singer, who had some of the best quips ever. When one kid said, "Woo!" during a quiet time between songs, he said, "Yeah, that's what I did. Good job." When a loser yelled out, "Super sassy!" he responded with "You're fucking retarded." They put on one of the best live shows I've seen in a long ass time, rocking the entire venue all over the place, even just a day after a car wreck in Louisiana, where they destroyed their van and trailer. The singer mentioned that he wasn't having any fun at this show halfway through their set, and told the crowd to pretend that they were starting over. They then proceeded to rock the second half even harder than could ever be imagined.

Daughters' show alone earns nine stars, but the other bands earned 5, so I placed the entire show in the middle, at a 7.

I left after NEG played. There was no reason to stay for the rest of what was undoubtably a shitty show. Oh yeah, I was the douche bag dancing to NEG. Go fuck yourself. Go back to your shitty city.

i totallly agree NEG is a bunch of talentless pieces of shit. There a bunch of fags who only care about "getting some" or all the "fans" they have that are really just all there lame ass friends who have nothing better to do in life than go see these lame fucks!

    My Score:

regardless if you think NEG is good or not, saying they sound like madball is a bit absurd. a better (far more accurate) comparison would be the hope conspiracy. my advice is to stick to what you know, like fashion "grind-noise" ala daughters.

jesse is an idiot. since i just insulted you i guess that now makes me a fan favorite huh? hey idiot maybe if you werent too busy stroking off daughters in the corner you would realize that first of all the crowd there i dont think there was one kid who like poison the well(you must not have ever been to a dead to fall show in chicago thats where you find all the scene kids) second of all you ripped the first three bands and you obviously must not have been listening because if you want to talk about originality and new promising music, not the same old shit then there it is. i personally knew almost eveyrone at the show and everyone was very cool. oo and by the way daughters probably would have thought you were a douche bag for ripping on the other bands because i know for a fact they thought tower of rome was amazing (i was sitting with them during tower of rome's set). so now you can take you dick out of dauthers and realize whats up.

    My Score:

I'd like to know how they are a gimmick band. The Locust are a gimmick band, they wear bug suits. Gwar is a gimmick band, they...well, everyone knows what Gwar does. So how is Daughters a gimmick band? They play music. No costumes. No kitschy stage theatrics. Just music. Stop being a retard and listen to a band for the music they play instead of associating bands with uninformed stigma.

Yeah, when Daughters write a song, they instantly think, ''Okay, what can we write that will make us popular?" You moron.

"Are you not having fun? I guess you're just here for Blood Brothers. Fuck Birmingham."

If this pissed you off that much then they must be doing something right to be that offensive. If they are such a terrible band, then why do acts that you do like, like the Blood Brothers, take them out on tour? Do they say, "Oh hey, we need to get a gimmick band to open for us, let's call Daughters."

Yeah, I know. They're totally trying to "hit it big" like Converge and D4. You know those bands are rolling in cash from their musical endeavors... Also, you guys can't handel a little mean stage banter. I like it.

It's because you idiots want/expect some more of the "we love our fans! unity!" bullshit, and the Kinison and these guys just fuck up your day. They're good JUST for that, if nothing else.

You're fucking retarded, Daughters does not play from the heart, that's the last thing they play from. They're in it to be popular, bands like Converge, Bane, Dillinger Four; they play from the heart. Do you think the singer put is heart into writing a song like C.H.U.D.S.?

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 14, 2004 at 9:29 PM (EST)
    My Score:

Daughters are one of the worst bands I've ever seen. I saw them open for the Blood Brothers. I ran into the lead singer before the show (I didn't know who he was) and he was a normal, nice guy. Then he gets on stage and starts pretending to be a big asshole. Spitting on the crowd, giving us the finger (so original and offensive!), and busting out some of the same great banter the reviewer mentioned.
He realized everyone hated his band and busted out with some great quip like "Are you not having fun? I guess you're just here for Blood Brothers. Fuck Birmingham."
At this point, I simply returned the finger and walked out. About half the crowd had the same idea I did. They finished their show quietly.

"Saying that I'm a "jizz eater" would perpetuate that I would enjoy the after product of fellating someone. In essence, you are saying that I am either bi-sexual or homosexual. You say this in a negative tone, therefore perpetuating the use of homosexuality or bi-sexuality to signify something negative. Way to be homophobic."

This score is for Jesse's comment above. I use the "You must be homophobic" response whenever someone calls someone else gay. Then I follow it up, "...Hitler."

"you're fuckign retarded" wow thats brilliant, where does he come up with that amazing stuff??? and i'll bet you managed to convert everyone in the crowd to fans too. "look...that dweeb wearing girls jeans is heckling us....obviously we're missing something here. oh, i've got it! daughters si actually not terrible, annoying diarrea-core, but they are actually amazing and incredible! i never would have realized it if it were not for that heckler! god bless!"

I don't think he meant that Pig Destroyer *are* grind. Eitherway Daughters are another band perversing a style that scene kids are picking up as original. TERRIBLE.

Example: Scenekid likes (as mentioned earlier) As I Lay Dying. Give them At The Gates, Slayer, etc. 99/100 times they will say it sucks.

    THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG HERE.

    My Score:

Dude, Daughters got picked up because scene kids love everything. They aren't scene guys making music to be popular, they're just playing music that they love, and that comes through.

To tell you the truth, this isn't grind, and neither is Pig Destroyer. This is grind influenced noise. Pig Destroyer is grind influenced thrash. Real grind is like Napalm Death or Extreme Noise Terror.

    My Score:

The Daughters: "Grind" for scene kids, much like how As I Lay Dying is "metal" for scene kids. Pure garbage. Lay this fluff to waste and PLEASE pick up the new Pig Destroyer.
