Do you remember this band? It’s that female fronted U.K. band that released an EP out of the blue on Fat Wreck last year, produced by Bill Stevenson. It got quite a few bad reviews, but I really dug those seven songs. Meanwhile, the band toured the U.S., played with bands like Rancid, Yellowcard, Sugarcult and New Found Glory to name a few, were one of the “30 bands you need to know” according to Kerrang!, were in studio with Neal Avron (Everclear, New Found Glory, SR-71 and Yellowcard) to record these fourteen songs, and signed a deal with upcoming label Repossession Records. Quite some achievement for kids who are only aged between 17 and 19.

Three songs from the EP were actually re-recorded for this album. Both “Forgotten Generation” and “Revolution Calling” kept its initial sound and speed with only the edges that have been cut out, while the metronome for the previously Clash-ragga sounding “Stage School Kidz” got speeded up which transformed the song into a more eager (and at the same time great) poppy tune. I can’t say the pro production did their music harm, although I’m convinced you moaners will have something negative to say about a band that sounds poppy-clean. To be honest, I wouldn’t really pigeon-hole this with the catchy pop-punk, but I can’t really categorize them with the bands they claim to get their influence from (The Clash, Generation X and The Buzzcocks) either… they just sound too straightforward and unfilthy for it. It has to be said that this girl Kate’s voice is as tremendous as her looks, even the slower “No More Legend” shows she’s got quite some breath in those lungs. I still find it quite annoying though that she has to end her words with that weird “eh” (f.e. “back” = “back-eh”).

In my humble opinion there’s at least three songs on this album that have the ability to warp this band to higher levels: the beforementioned “Stage Cool Kidz,” “Karaoke Kid” which has an instant snatchable chorus that will have you tapping along instantly and which has quite a few interesting key-changes, and the more melodic “Housewreck” which has a terrific riffy guitar in the chorus, although I suppose it’s all up to their management to decide and they’ll probably choose the cleaner songs like “No More Legend” or “Don’t Tell Me” which are somewhat more radio-accessible. Two constants all through the disc are the easy to sing along chorus and, on a less positive note, quite juvenile lyrics. But hey, wisdom comes with the age (hmmm!?!). Anyway, their angriness towards the world and discontent to people who dislike them sounds a bit artificial with those cheap-worded threats.

If you like catchy, well-produced, accessible dirty music with a slight spark of older-styled U.K. punk rock and you like girls on the mic you can’t really go wrong with this one. I’m sure the die-hards will again find it hard to admit that this is a strong release, but I’m sure the kids will swallow this like little biscuits. I’m no die-hard and I’m no kid but I just love everything that sounds well to my ears. And I if tell you that this is the album that during my holidays got the most spins, you can bet that there’s a lot of others who will buy it. Tsunami Bomb might sound less artificial and their last album sounds definitely more mature than this one, but odds are that this band could top their sales with quite a margin thanks to the more mindsticking choruses. We’ll see what happens...

i just got this album and i thikn this band are amazing! im not usualy a big punk fan but this my convert me! i think the lead singer has amazing vocals and alot of the songs although sounds quite similar are AMAZING!

I wish my Grandpa listened to Hardcore and Punk!! Sure he'd probably kick my ass for being a little wuss but I'd still go hang out with him all the time. Pretty sure all his records are church hymns and psalms or something. bleh. He's still pretty rad though.

"Fall Out Boys
This IS NOT a journal entry... it's just a small kind of story, commentary kind of thing.

So, me and my friend mel in the past have had problems with Fall Out Boys... Not the one's you think I mean though.....
O.K it's like this: there is a store not too far away from where we live, in Birmingham. It is called Fall Out. In that store only guys are hired to work. So mel named all the dudes "Fall Out Boys".. this was quite a while ago.... maybe a few years.

So, the last guy that I was kinda seeing or whatever, was a F.O.B (as in, he worked in Fall Out), and he knew it, I think. You see, Fall Out is classed as a kinda cool place to work, and so if any girls hook up with a F.O.B, they automaticaly climb the social ladder..... which is wiered.

So, I some how managed to hook up with one of the dudes that works in Fall Out (don't know how i managed to pull that one off as he is hella hot). Not for social climbing purposes, but cuz he is cool.
As all fall out boys are generaly the same, it was inevitable, that after a few weeks (maybe 3) he would get bored with me. Which he did. At least I think he got bored with me... who knows.. It still sucks though... whatever.

Enter my friend Pete... A Fall Out Boy.. An actual one though. Not in the sense he works in the store...
I wondered if A Fall Out Boy (who works in the store) is like a Fall Out Boy (that plays in the band)? I somehow don't think so. They are two COMPLETLEY DIFFERENT things, they just happen to share a name...... The actual fall out boy(s) aren't walking 'round like they know that they are hot... They don't look at girls with a stare that says "you are lucky to be in my presence" and they don't make you feel as though it has to be you're "lucky day" just to get spoken to...

Anyway, to the point.... Pete is way cool. I like hanging out with him... Maybe cuz he's not that much taller than me, so I somehow feel alot taller when I walk next to him!!! Nah, just kidding, thats not why...He's just fucking rad. We hiked around the 'woods. We didn't see any coyote's though.. Or racoons, or any Deer.. Somehow, I allways used to see Deers cruising 'round in those parts.... good times anyhow.

I was allways sceptical about F.O.B's.. Now I know (thank fuck) that there are actually some friendly nice Fall Out Boys out there! Even if they are a completley different kind of F.O.B.

(is it just me, or is this confusing?)

So, I know that I'm probably gonna get bitched at for this entry, and some people are not gonna have a clue what I am talking about, but I don't really care, and it doesn't matter.... I (and mel) know what I mean

Old hardcore will never be mainstream. It's just too vicious.

Of course, you could make an argument about their influence on metal... But that's a whole other ball game.

When I read that, I kept imagining a really stereotypical Canadian immitation, but now that I hear it, I get what you mean. It's an extra, audible exhale at the end of every word to emphasize it or whatever. She really goes overboard with it.

props to the guy below me. there's nothing wrong with doing something that's already been done as long as you do it WELL. i saw this band when they played with the rxb crew, they're all insanely young and their singer is INSANELY hot.
