With one of the few absolutely essential records of the year, Death From Above 1979 step around and over the lines drawn in the indie sand with a sound and style that fits nowhere but can be appreciated everywhere. You're A Woman, I'm A Machine hits the sweet spot between that time-tested garage swagger and genre-shattering originality. Here you have the gritty toughness of a buzzsaw blues riff coupled with the shameless sexuality of a danceable post-punk beat. The soundscape painted is dense and busy with a heavy low end yet is at the same time fluid and quickly moving, a pairing that gives You're A Woman, I'm A Machine some of the sharpest hooks and most infectious songs of any record this year.

The most remarkable thing is that this is all from a two-piece! That fact alone must shock those that have experienced DFA'79 as faceless audio alone, for the band sounds absolutely huge on record. Furthermore, there's nary a proper guitarist in sight. Death From Above is two members of Toronto hardcore band Femme Fatale, although as this record continues to blow up that's looking more and more like an unimportant footnote. Drummer Sebastien Grainger takes on vocal duties while Jesse Keeler doubles on bass and synth as needed. Keeler's playing is commendable in that, through a wall of distortion, he gives an instrument so often resigned to the background remarkable prominence. The instrumentation has far more life and energy than it seems on paper and gives Death From Above an unmistakable sound.

You're A Woman, I'm A Machine is a collection of break-up songs seen through a bitter, aggressive and overtly sexual filter. "Turn It Out" kicks the album off with a heavy cacophonous stomp, instantly laying the sonic groundwork for what's to come. The following single "Romantic Rights" likewise cements the lyrical themes and shows off just how effective the band's deep and danceable grooves can be. Punk energy permeates "Blood On Our Hands" with Grainger's soaring vocals in the chorus cementing it as one of the album's best cuts. The band's hardcore roots also show through on the title track, which pushes Keeler's playing to an impressive speed. Yet it's in the combination of the aggro moments and downright funky jams that make the record something special. The last two tracks are a perfect example: the lunatic screaming and chaotic song structure of the sleazy "Pull Out" should win over Blood Brothers fans in a second while the album-closing "Sexy Results" features more ass-shaking rhythm than most so-called "dance punk" bands could ever muster. Hell, it even rocks the cowbell for good measure.

They don't make `em with this much personality anymore. Death From Above 1979 do something shockingly out of character for this decade by writing music that's hook filled and accessible yet clearly unique and accomplished. That highbrow indie publications can debate the depths of Grainger's damaged love while at the same time normal folk can just ignore it and dance is a marvel in itself.

    #1 They're from Toronto.

#3 I never really could get into this band, and now they're gone. At least they were better than MSTRKRFT.

" This band is cool, they and LB are really NOTHING alike, though. "

yeah, two bands with only a bass player and a drummer who play loud, noisy, fast rock really have NOTHING in common.

the only difference is Lightning Bolt is noisier and more experimental while DFA is more conventional. i'm a fan of both bands but i just had to point that out because you always seem to say everything contrary to the crowd for no reason other than to be contrary. very punk.

In Canada these guys are on the top forty MTV video countdown. I'm not kidding. They're egos have gone from non-existant to rock star in a period of six months. I saw them a little while ago and was severely dissappointed with their live show, especially when they started arguing with some audience members. Heads Up! was awesome... this album... Overplayed and over-promoted.

i have the misfortune of knowing jon the skafather from other boards and mailing lists, and he is the biggest retard i've ever met. i love how he throws around pretention like he knows what it is, but get him talking about himself and his own musical abilities and watch his ego soar. i love the, "my voice sounds like a good mix of aaron barrett, fat mike and brad from sublime" shit. funny for a guy who kinda looks like the dude from napoleon dynamite.

fyi, jon, they've been using the illustration of them with elephant trunks since they first started. a different version of it was on the cover of their first 7". keep in mind the band is from canada, then try to recall the "great white north" skit from sctv, or the movie based on it, "strange brew." i'm sure you can put two and two together.

The ability to play barr chords really fast comes within the first month or two of picking up a guitar, if you approach it with that attitude.

Really, I think Hatebreed suck on every level... Asshole attitudes, shitty thrash music, etc. They just endorse the whole "gangsta hardcore" trip, and I think that's a lot of BS. It's as dumb as indie hipsters.

There's no conspiracy here, DFA's on Last Gang Records in Canada and Vice in the US. Vice is distributed through Atlantic, but that's really not a secret.

There isn't one sole major label icon we use to label all major label bands, there's one for each of the four majors. If any of the sublabels or imprints of those majors requests their own icon (like Island did) we'll give them one.

We're not going to tell you what you should or shouldn't like based on labels. That's for you to decide. We're are however going to treat the indies and majors fairly in that if they have enough news to warrant a topic, they can have one. I'll leave the silly politics on which labels have "cred" to the schoolyard.

Have you heard lightnging bolt? Similar to this i'd say but more noise/chaos and less vocals. They're another awesome two-piece from Providence. Shit the drummer's stage acrobatics are insane.

    My Score:

Chinatown: Well I'd consider "fairly standard indie rock" generally on the more cerebral and complex end of the spectrum, and Arcade Fire certainly errs more on the side of lush artistic arrangements that I see as appealing to the "highbrow" crowd. I'm not saying that's the best definition of them at all, I'm just saying that compared to the style DFA'79's playing, the Arcade Fire is the more highbrow band (and I like the Arcade Fire, so don't get me wrong, I didn't even first bring them up in this conversation).

Arcade Fire is hardly highbrow. Have you actually listened to "Funeral," Adam? Its arrangements are fairly standard indie rock.

pretentiousness? How, my friend, did you reach that conclusion? This isn't high brow indie stuff like The Arcade Fire or Broken Social Scene, it's sleazy hard rock about sex and love.

I haven't heard this album, but I wasn't impressed by their other releases. It just sounds like regular rock songs.

err this is treading Arcade Fire territory for pretentiousness, shit guy I know that I should love these Canucks but I'm still not feelin' it, I REALLY felt the VICE release of Montreal's the Stills.
