With one of the few absolutely essential records of the year, Death
From Above 1979 step around and over the lines drawn in the indie sand
with a sound and style that fits nowhere but can be appreciated
everywhere. You're A Woman, I'm A Machine hits the sweet spot
between that time-tested garage swagger and genre-shattering
originality. Here you have the gritty toughness of a buzzsaw blues riff
coupled with the shameless sexuality of a danceable post-punk beat. The
soundscape painted is dense and busy with a heavy low
end yet is at the same time fluid and quickly moving, a pairing that gives
You're A Woman, I'm A Machine some of the sharpest hooks and
most infectious songs of any record this year.

too bad i never got to see them....this is a rather good album!! "#2 You may be deaf, 180 Degrees is a ska song..." "Posted by manifesto on 2004-12-29 21:10:19 I love this band with all my heart. great album... just picked it up.. this cd totaly kix ass hu nu so little people could make so much noise? its a kick ass cd if u dont have it go out and by it by the way to the moron that said it was "surreal art" they wanted people to think that there was an elephant in the room when they listened to the cd its on the fucking web site hey morons over half of u guys are talking about sumthing totaly off topic isnt there a fucking chat room on this site hey morons over half of u guys are talking about sumthing totaly off topic isnt there a fucking chant room on this site "Did anyone ever notice that the NOFX song "Quart in Session" and "Franco-Unamerican" sound EXACTLY THE SAME! even with the stupid lil breakdown at the end." " This band is cool, they and LB are really NOTHING alike, though. " great album. i hope to see more of them "Local H is still better eh." Local H is still better eh. Did anyone ever notice that the NOFX song "Quart in Session" and "Franco-Unamerican" sound EXACTLY THE SAME! even with the stupid lil breakdown at the end. This is a good album, but its no Hazen Street This is a good album, but just good. I don't really like the singer's voice and the lyrics aren't anything special and it's go go go the whole way through, but it's still good. I don't know why. In Canada these guys are on the top forty MTV video countdown. I'm not kidding. They're egos have gone from non-existant to rock star in a period of six months. I saw them a little while ago and was severely dissappointed with their live show, especially when they started arguing with some audience members. Heads Up! was awesome... this album... Overplayed and over-promoted. "Haven't really heard the full album yet, but Black History Month is going on all my near-future mixtapes." Haven't really heard the full album yet, but Black History Month is going on all my near-future mixtapes. I love to breed with animals. Particularly horses---only they can satisfy my need for a large cock. i have the misfortune of knowing jon the skafather from other boards and mailing lists, and he is the biggest retard i've ever met. i love how he throws around pretention like he knows what it is, but get him talking about himself and his own musical abilities and watch his ego soar. i love the, "my voice sounds like a good mix of aaron barrett, fat mike and brad from sublime" shit. funny for a guy who kinda looks like the dude from napoleon dynamite. "I respect Hatebreed's musical ability. I used to despise them, then I saw them at Krazyfest and was quite impressed. I don't put a lot of stock into their "message", but at least they don't seem fake, artsy-fartsy and pretentious." Local H is better. I respect Hatebreed's musical ability. I used to despise them, then I saw them at Krazyfest and was quite impressed. I don't put a lot of stock into their "message", but at least they don't seem fake, artsy-fartsy and pretentious. "Jonesy is just pissed because his republican ass can't own slaves anymore. "i guess to each fag his own " "You have no idea what surrealism is, do you?" "elephant trunks do not grow on human faces in the real world. to prove that, i will point to heath of midtown. he does not have an elephant trunk, despite what is portrayed on this album cover. so yes, i also find it surreal. and since it's a painting of some sort... that's more than likely considered art by definition. you cock sucking vampire." so i guess jon the skafather and swingline would rather have a cover art of them drinking beer or looking cool in chick jeans or sucking vampire cock. "are you talking about them putting elephant trunks on themselves on the cover? you find that surreal and artsy?" "so i have to ask......what's with all the surreal artwork that has jackshit to do with the title? Sickboi respects Hatebreed... Which, good or bad, explains where he's coming from. so i have to ask......what's with all the surreal artwork that has jackshit to do with the title? Sickboi I don't fully understand your hate for this band, sure there are dancy moments, but it's far more of just a good rhythm made by real instruments than the Rapture-!!!-disco-thing. This is really just a rock record. "shameless sexuality of a danceable post-punk beat"?!?!?!?! Death From Above 1979 is some pretty hot shit, but not as hot as the new EXCLUSIVE Yellowcard song now being featured! You can download this EXCLUSIVE song for only $5,99, as well as some other songs from other awesome underground bands as part as the "hardcore punk" edition of AP's MixTate. This band is cool, they and LB are really NOTHING alike, though. Death From Above 1979 is some pretty hot shit. You can download one of their songs for free, as well as some other songs from other awesome bands as part as the first edition sayRAH.net mixtape. "Adam: We're not going to tell you what you should or shouldn't like based on labels. "yo have you seen that video of LIghtning bolt where the drummer is hanging upside by his calves on the rafters over his drumset? then he drops down onto his throne with out ever missing a beat and keeps playing. I want to see this band sooooo fucking bad. Wish i still had that video...." if the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Lightning Bolt had a child, it would be DFA'79. I was kind of disappointed by this album. I really enjoyed the EP, but this just seemed to lack energy. The recording kind of sounds muddy. THe songs sounded like they were pretty well written, but I was having to strain my ears to understand or fully hear the vocals at some points. I wouldn't say this album is essential. Just fun. "We're not going to tell you what you should or shouldn't like based on labels." this score is for France Shameless plug for the ongoing Vice Records contest featuring Death From Above 1979, Panthers and Vietnam: i like the mp3s. god damn, alot of these comments make me want to fuck you people......pussies I have a fever, and... this band is pussy incarnate. As far as two people go, I'll take White Stripes any day. oh, and there is just fucking nothing in common between death from above and arcade fire. i can hardly thinks of two bands that are more different in rock music. the singer of arcade fire was a religion major at my school, death from above has a song chorus that consists of "Push In, Push In, Push In, Push In, Pull Out, Pull Out, Pull Out, Pull Out," do the fucking math the blue man group? yo have you seen that video of LIghtning bolt where the drummer is hanging upside by his calves on the rafters over his drumset? then he drops down onto his throne with out ever missing a beat and keeps playing. I want to see this band sooooo fucking bad. Wish i still had that video.... Lightning Bolt are amazing, and i like DFA1979 a lot too, but the only similarity between the two is that they both have only two people in the band, thats it, the music is completely different. "Funny how the major label icon disappears in certain instances..." "What can I say Barkley... don't let the bastards grind you down. Funny how the major label icon disappears in certain instances... This record is totally sweet. What can I say Barkley... don't let the bastards grind you down. Sorry these kids I know ACTUALLY have a handbook on how to be "scene" I'm not joking, they love this stuff/arcade fire/broken social scene. Some pilon was preaching about the fact that I should just like the music because its good. Its sad but I just can't enjoy it when I know that these kids who I just can't respect like it. hey the guy to the right on the album cover looks like that yetti from midtown. i think his names heath. someone mentioned lightning bolt, and its odd because i just read an article about Lightning Bolt in SPIN and they described a two piece with singing drummer/bass player, i havent heard either band but just thought this was an odd coincidence "I worry about bands that resolve legal issues with their names by adding a location or a year. I mean, this is art - right? What does it say about their artistic integrity if they can't even come up with an original name?" honestly you fuckers, its easy to dismiss an overly-kind review of a record as hype, but have you forgotten that once upon a time, people actually enjoyed listening to records? and not just so they could impress their friends with conveniently-timed name drops. I worry about bands that resolve legal issues with their names by adding a location or a year. I mean, this is art - right? What does it say about their artistic integrity if they can't even come up with an original name? I bought this for a friend in Toronto, thinking it was some hip indie nonsense...and then I found out after I left that it's fantastic. Great stuff. i guess i should've picked this up when i saw it in the used bin days after it was released.... Have you heard lightnging bolt? Similar to this i'd say but more noise/chaos and less vocals. They're another awesome two-piece from Providence. Shit the drummer's stage acrobatics are insane. Chinatown: Well I'd consider "fairly standard indie rock" generally on the more cerebral and complex end of the spectrum, and Arcade Fire certainly errs more on the side of lush artistic arrangements that I see as appealing to the "highbrow" crowd. I'm not saying that's the best definition of them at all, I'm just saying that compared to the style DFA'79's playing, the Arcade Fire is the more highbrow band (and I like the Arcade Fire, so don't get me wrong, I didn't even first bring them up in this conversation). The review convinced me to pick up a copy of this. Arcade Fire is hardly highbrow. Have you actually listened to "Funeral," Adam? Its arrangements are fairly standard indie rock. pretentiousness? How, my friend, did you reach that conclusion? This isn't high brow indie stuff like The Arcade Fire or Broken Social Scene, it's sleazy hard rock about sex and love. I haven't heard this album, but I wasn't impressed by their other releases. It just sounds like regular rock songs. err this is treading Arcade Fire territory for pretentiousness, shit guy I know that I should love these Canucks but I'm still not feelin' it, I REALLY felt the VICE release of Montreal's the Stills. and i meant that in a totally non gay way "It just seems rather pointless to those who frequent this site, but I guess this helps for those who don't." I'm sorry, but I heard their first single, and it bored me. "So instead of writing one review that says what I want it to say, I should direct people to a few months worth of comments and articles located at random locations across the archives, so that they can comb them for clues and formulate what my opinion like a detective? I posted a review for the Facing New York EP, where the hell is it on this site? I thouht it was a pretty good review hey adam, I agree, these guys are the coolest This album is straight up dirty, and one of my favorites of the year. Their EP is really good as well. So instead of writing one review that says what I want it to say, I should direct people to a few months worth of comments and articles located at random locations across the archives, so that they can comb them for clues and formulate what my opinion like a detective? Doesn't this seem a little redundant after you copious amounts of praise from your past posts? |
