Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

If you're looking for a consistantly good hardcore band, look no further than Gorilla Biscuits. While they unfortunately disbanded after only one EP and this CD, these few mementos of their existance show us what a hardcore band can strive for. GB had positive lyrics, heavy and fast music, and notable talent. Along with a few other bands from their native New York, Gorilla Biscuits is credited for starting a new hardcore movement, similar to what Minor Threat did in the early 80's.

Not only a straight-edge band, GB made it a point to make all of their songs positive statements for change. This was one of the things that got them recognition for starting a movement, as the earlier hardcore bands that had mostly died out were also incredibly violent. It's clear the band was ready for a change, though they were a bit too late anyway. Hardcore is an extremely one-dimensional genre, so the impact they made was less than that of bands like Black Flag and others.

The CD starts off with "New Direction," which is a great song with a title that clearly states GB's focus. The listener will immediately notice what a great voice Civ has; it fits perfectly with the heavy melodies of the band's dual guitarists. "Things We Say" is a surprising melodic interlude that still hits extremely hard and is one of my personal favorites. As the CD progresses it becomes apparent that the band rarely slows down. In fact, the only track they let up on is "Start Today," which even has a short harmonica part for some reason. The last two tracks are incredibly fast and brutal; a fitting ending to the band's career.

If you're looking for a new hardcore band in the vein of Minor Threat, definitely check out the Gorilla Biscuits. I haven't heard their EP but it's probably equally as good as this CD. It's a shame that this band wasn't around longer, but I think they did what they needed to do and that's all that matters. These fourteen tracks are a testament to truly great American punk music.

"These guys and Bold were the two most over-rated NYHC bands of the class of 88. Seriously, they were nothing to write home about compared to their peers- Youth Of Today, Breakdown, Sick of it All, Warzone, Crippled Youth (pre-Bold band), and Agnostic Front. Heck, the joke band Project X OWNS everything GB ever released"

Agnostic Front? Get your shit together you hopeless clown.

Posicore? I don't give a fuck, it's all good. Civ's got a great voice and the other biscuits do it justice. Even more so than Minor Threat's material, this shit just makes me want to jump around.

I don't know who this cat is doing this review... My buddy Tony had this album he bought and we were all like who cares... he went on a road trip and in May 90 we drove down to Norwalk, Ct to the Anthrax and saw GB. To this day that show goes down in history for me as one of the greatest... I was hooked on GB that whole summer and still listen to Start Today like never before... These guys were the greatest straight-edge band of all time when straight-edge guys weren't a bunch of fuckin' pussies... they stood for something that will never be captured ever again... If you never heard of Gorilla Biscuits than you ain't hardcore... if you want a taste of what the scene was like back then, listen to this album until you fucking hate it... if hardcore is in your blood you never will... fuck that homo who reviewed this album... you don't know shit... go back and listen to your fag emo crap... GB did what they did because they were the real deal.

    My Score:

inside out was around for just a few years, from around 88 or 89 till 91. they broke up right before they were going to record their first full length (which was to be called "rage against the machine"). people who saw them claim they were one of the best live bands ever. either their bassist or their drummer (i forget which) was also in chain of strength. their guitarist, vic, went on to be in 108 (who were excellent) and he played on the mediocre burn reunion EP. inside out only made one EP, which is on revelation and is pretty damn good. that's all there is, but if you look online, you can find a lot of live recordings of songs that would have been on that full length that was never recorded. they allegedly broke up because while on tour with quicksand and shelter, ray cappo converted vic to harre krishna leading him to quit the band and play in shelter for a while and then start 108 (who were krishna). that's all i know about them, there's no web site i know of.

In my opinion, this is the best Hardcore album ever released, or at least the best of the New York bunch; Sick of it All never made a record like this one, nor Agnostic Front did, nor Youth of Today, and, of course, not the Cro-Mags.
It's fast, mean, agressive, but impressively melodic. You can find influences from Minor Threat ("Out of Step" era), 7 Seconds, Dag Nasty, and even trails of South Californian pals like Descendents or Bad Religion.
Almost every song here is a classic (i don't think "First Failure" is as good as the others, though)

Fuck, I love this record. When I was at my first punk show in Buenos Aires, I felt totally isolated (mostly because I suck at spanish) but then one of the bands on stage played "new direction" and all the kids sang along in english. It felt really surreal - just like a show at home, but I was 3000 miles away and didn't know anybody.
