I’m getting further and further proof that 2005 really is a rebirth of hardcore. Only, I didn’t expect it to be propelled by (presently) virtual unknowns as well, like Above This Fire. The band does the Bane/Comeback Kid-ish hardcore thing, and they do it fairly well.

Like the two abovementioned, they fuel the music with the semi-obnoxious YELLING IN YOUR EAR singing style (though in all fairness, it’s never at all annoying here), mostly positive lyrics, and gang vocals, of course, while scattering some screamy, metallic bits here and there. Within the first twenty seconds of the disc you get the idea the band doesn’t stray far from their likeminded posi- stalwarts; in “Reaction,” Andy Hoffman announces “Today will not leave me in ruins / From here on out, I’ll stand my ground / For all it’s worth, I’m all that I have.” Though the disc pretty much tails off after “Reaction’s” following track, “The Deceiver Within,” it’s fairly consistent and never boring.

For what it is, the band does it well; it’s just the usual case where it could be a stronger record with better songwriting and/or more musical ambition. In perspective, however, Above This Fire’s debut is both solid and promising, with a future sure to be filled with mic dives and pumped fists galore.

    Anonymous (March 17, 2005)

oh man i saw these clowns at the agora at some really early hour during the day. the one kid has bigger breasts than most my girlfriends, and im sorta jealous of this. the singer looks like a disabled learner student. so its an ugly band with shit music that sounds exactly like dead fo fall and shai hulud but less polished of those two bands. its just anything close to being noteworthy. or worth spending money. let alone minutes froms downloading this sludge. im just supirsed i saw them on the front page. and looks like everyone else isnt happy with the fat kid the disabeled kid and their bands of minions. go ask my mom to play in her basement.

    Anonymous (March 15, 2005)

you know...not only fuck this band, but fuck everyone they are associated with- which means everyone associated with Peabody's, and anyone who goes there. that club is single handedly the WORST fuckin "punk" venue weve ever had. if you work there or support it, stop being so fuckin ignorant.

    Anonymous (March 15, 2005)

whats your deal? are you the one with the juicy man rod he comes home to after a hard day of laying down breakdown tracks?

    Anonymous (March 14, 2005)

i'll agree with that, why yall gotta hate on a young entrepreneur? He's a good guitar player, so what if hes got goals outside of his parents basement and this so called hardcore scene. right?

trend hopping, egotism, and being cliche. AWESOME! GO TEAM CLEVELAND!!!

    Anonymous (March 14, 2005)

whoa buddy. this band hardly fucking stands out in the cleveland scene. fake ass hardcore dicks are pretty fucking easy to come across.i can think of many cleveland bands way fucking better than these cock chomps. and who the fuck cares how nice they are?

    Anonymous (March 14, 2005)

    amen!
    CFS!

    Anonymous (March 13, 2005)

wow...a bunch of "punk" kids posting about an album they dont like.sorry guys but this band has never claimed to be a straightup hardcore band.

their all some of the best people i know.most fun to be around.make good music which in this city of shitty wanna be "old school" bands and numetal/mallcore bands they actually stand out.theres about 3 bands in this city that i'll stand behind no matter what and these guys are one of them.

stop whining about the guys in the band and listen to the cd.its a quality album.who cares if the singer used to play sports or was in a rap metal band.i'm sure you all have been into something other than punk or hardcore before you got into this.stop being fake ass fruits and deal with the fact that people change.ith appens.i'm sure a year or two ago you were into numetal or rap and now your more punk than the next guy.big deal.

bottomline is the guys in the band are awesome and the cd is a great release.

    CFS
    "amazing"

basketball is hxc. and your all fags who dont know what your talking about. These guys are good friends of mine, and they worked their asses off for what they have. The new albums awesome."get a life you suck" - step to this

    backupdork (March 13, 2005)

if the drummer weren't one of my best friends, i wouldn't give this band the time of day.

    Anonymous (March 13, 2005)

wow yeah...REALLY original cover art here.

Ahh Above this Fire. We thought we hardly knew thee. From the moment Andy sank that backwards 3 pointer from across the court to seal the championship he knew he was destined for greatness. I know this band is the most ridiculed and "biggest joke" from Cleveland in a long time. But come on guys! Have you ever read the lyrics?? So much beatuy in them. I learned to get over heartache and I found GOD because of them! If this band came out before Minor Threat they would of stolen all of their material. They're pretty much the same thing as them. But better because they are the product of our lord, savior and friend Jesus Christ. Carry on LT! Carry on! CARRY ON FOR THE LORD!

    Anonymous (March 12, 2005)

agreed, the song is good and derek hess is the shit. Some pants guy did the layout?

    punkcorekid (March 12, 2005)

    sincerely,
    cleveland

    Anonymous (March 12, 2005)

these guys are fucking losers, they're an embarassment to the cleveland scene. voted "most likely to be hockin on a meatpole for a record deal" in my magazine. oh well at least noone on this site gives a flying fuck about them.

    Anonymous (March 12, 2005)

ps: this band isnt punk..... why is this on here.....

    Anonymous (March 12, 2005)

if playing the same style of music for 5 years is jumping on trends, put them on the wagon. You kids are haters. This cd kicks ass and they deserve it.

    p-fresh (March 12, 2005)

and also, not that it matters to the music much.... the singer was one of the biggest jocks at my highschool. go figure.

Hahahah, captain of the High School Basketball Team!!

    Anonymous (March 11, 2005)

these guys are the BIGGEST ego-maniacs i have ever come across. they were recently on a local college radio show, and the host referred to one of the guitar players as a "living legend". yeah, brah.

also, they are trend jumpers. do you know what they used to play about, 6 or 7 years ago? RAP-METAL. yes thats right, rap metal. they were called "Downfall of Society".....

and also, not that it matters to the music much.... the singer was one of the biggest jocks at my highschool. go figure.

    joeg (March 11, 2005)

jesus christ, every single cliched aspect of metalcore can be found in these songs. this is bad music. at least the singer is tolerable.

    tommy_jarvis (March 11, 2005)

I do not enjoy Bane. This is true. But I have a situation here that a lot of people are probably familiar with but they don't even know it. I bought my ride cymbal from Above This Fire's drummer, who my friend and I had called "SXE Van kid" previously (because he drives around in a minivan with SXE and hardcore band stickers all over it and we didn't know his name). I would have probably never known this band and I would have never bought this cd if I didn't happen to run into him at a shitty local firehall show a while back. So then you get to the point where you're like "uhh, am I preordering this cd because the drummer is a nice guy or am I preordering this cd because I know I'm going to like the music?" Then when you like the cd, you ask yourself " Do I like this cd because it's good or because I know them semi-personally?"
    It's good.
I don't like the singer live.
He sounds a lot better on cd.
I am trying to be fair here so you should too!

    hubitcherkokov (March 11, 2005)

This band is horrendous. They're not "positive" they're dicks.

    p-fresh (March 11, 2005)

    This band is pretty horrible.

Also the guitarist is a horrible douchebag.

Score is for good Cleveland bands past and present like Integrity, Ringworm, and American Werewolves.

    Kenjamin (March 11, 2005)

    hahahaha zing.

    Anonymous (March 11, 2005)

"it’s just the usual case where it could be a stronger record with better songwriting and/or more musical ambition."

I think that's the case for everything ever released.
