As a big fan of the Circle Jerks, I can definitely say Kung Fu did a good job on their latest live DVD featuring longtime LA hardcore legends the Circle Jerks. While I'll nitpick over a few things, overall, it's worth the buy. Right off the bat, there's a light blue tint over the film, which I'm.

As a big fan of the Circle Jerks, I can definitely say Kung Fu did a good job on their latest live DVD featuring longtime LA hardcore legends the Circle Jerks. While I'll nitpick over a few things, overall, it's worth the buy.

Right off the bat, there's a light blue tint over the film, which I'm not sure is due to the lighting on the stage or what, but it's annoying for the first few songs. But you get used to it after awhile. Other than that, the production, the sound, the editing and the overall quality of camera shots is great. When I watch any live footage of a show, I want to feel like I'm actually at the show. You get that and more. There's probably half a dozen or so different camera shots of the band and it even goes down to the bass drum. There's also a good balance of shots of the crowd as well which is nice to see. The circle pit is congested with some big, scary looking skinheads and punks. And as you might expect, the crowd goes off the most for all the Group Sex-era songs. Throw in some stage divers who got lucky enough to get past the security and you've got your typical Circle Jerks show.

For a bunch of 40-something year-olds, they can still get it done live. Keith Morris, the alcoholic/cocaine addict/prick/asshole and his dreadlocks are as intense as ever while the rest of the band get a nice workout jumping around on stage. The sound is crisp and clear with no member of the band drowning each other out. The band tears through 27 songs in under an hour. Not surprisingly, the band focuses on their first (and best) 3 albums, Group Sex, Wild In The Streets and Golden Shower Of Hits. The rest of their catalog gets 1 or 2 nods per album. The highlight has to be Keith introducing the next song as "A sing along for the summertime. It goes like wild, running, wild, runningâ?¦" and the crowd going insane. I won't write down the whole set list, but all the classics and live staples are here with the exception of "Live Fast Die Young." They also throw in some Weirdos and Flesheaters covers and finish it all off with Black Flag's "Nervous Breakdown" as only Keith can do.

This DVD is basically just a live show. The extras aren't really too much to rave about. There's a short preshow backstage introduction with Keith stretching and Greg Hetson doing this really cool magic trick. The band commentary is pretty lame for reasons Keith rightfully points out. There is one feature that allows you to watch 5 simultaneous different camera angles for 3 songs, so if you just want to focus on the people beating each other up in the pit, check out the upper left corner.

While I had a hard time finding this DVD, I'm just glad the Circle Jerks got their due on film with a proper, professionally shot live show . If you missed out on them in the 80's or never got to see them live on the last few tours, then be sure to pick this one up.

I love that- "poser" Henry, obviously some little 12 year old kid with a mohawk wrote that. He's the only guy from that band who still carries his own weight and creates quality original shit.

Anonymous (March 31, 2005)

The best part about the show is when Keith tells an idiot in the crowd to stop spiting on them because they are fucking human beings.

Anonymous (March 31, 2005)

I was actually at this show. Nothing compares to being their live, but it's a quality DVD.

TheOneTrueBill (March 30, 2005)

Put together a cat rescue benefit and you can get Ginn to do it half assed.

fuk oi !!!

punk fukin rock till death and beyond !!!

Cos (March 30, 2005)

I think its cool that they're still playing because, like X, they're doing it the right way: they don't really tour (they just play local LA shows, as far as I know) and they aren't recording any new material, which pretty much acknowledges how special the original stuff was and how it would pretty stupid to write to stuff like that again at such an old age (7 Seconds, I'm looking right at you).

I saw them at Sunset Junction 2 years ago and they were pretty good. They seem to be playing for fun and a few bucks here and there, which is alright by me.

"I find group sex really boring except as a historical anecdote. NOt bad"

...are you serious? Group Sex is one of the best albums ever. It still holds up, too, which is part of why it's so good.

joeg (March 29, 2005)

"anyone else notice they missed the second verse to wild in the streets. and their version of wasted sucks compared to the original black flag version. fuck what this reviewer says, the commentary by keith and zander is funny as shit, along with keith's onstage remarks."

i wasn't commenting on the quality of their comments, although not much was said except zander telling keith he needed to talk more and describing how he was jumping around. if that's funny for you, by all means laugh on. i was commenting on the fact that trying to talk an hour about a show as keith was pointing out himself, is lame.

Ah, the Coicle Joiks. Nyuk nyuk nyuk.

thenightprowler (March 29, 2005)

Keith's vocals are pretty quiet in the audio mix on that Flipside compliation tape/DVD.

Anonymous (March 29, 2005)

There is a good old Circle Jerks set on the Best of Flipside Vol. 1, which also has a good old Bad Religion set.

"You must have searched for hours"

Great so now all I have to do is move to Europe or figure out how to pay for it in Euro's and have it shipped to the USA which I'm sure is not cheap.

joeg (March 29, 2005)

hey brandon, besides decline of western civilazation, what are some other good old circle jerks live shows out there? and i thought i heard keith saying either i, i,and i or anxious boy was by the flesheaters.

"1 is for review.

"Keith Morris, the alcoholic/cocaine addict/prick/asshole"

Whoa, where'd this come from? Did he actually do something to YOU? I met him, and he was a cool guy. He didn't have the DT's, nor did he ask me if I had any blow.

Isn't this kinda like calling you a junky child molester?"

Yes he did. He stole my stash and laughed in my face while snorting it up his nose.

BrandonSideleau (March 29, 2005)

one more thing....Keith is 50...not 40 and I don't recall hearing any Flesheaters cover on this dvd.

BrandonSideleau (March 29, 2005)

I saw the next show after this one, at the Henry Fonda Theatre and it was pretty wild. Although I agree with BSD in that I'd MUCH rather see a collection of early Circle Jerks videos (more energetic/violent), this is still really good stuff. The only bummer about the show was all of the little children with their "45 minute" mohawks and spikes four feet above their head, they don't get in.....just like the idiots from 20 years ago who did the same thing.

Well I don't have VI yet, I want it but I think it's out of print because I can't find it anywhere.

I think all of the Circle Jerks albums are pretty good, I can't say there's one Circle Jerks album that I never listen to and don't enjoy.

i like their last album, and you know, prefer the last two records, three if you wanna throw that live one in, than their first three.

Actually, I find group sex really boring except as a historical anecdote. NOt bad, but nothing worth more than one listen.

I like their middle period the best, followed by the later period, with the early "supposed to be the best" period last.

Always have, dunno, I really never thought about it. I was/am a huge fan, so I just liked all their stuff but realize I lean toward the stuff most people don't care for. Shrugging shoulders...now.

Sounds good, but I already have all of these albums... Why see some guys performing old material? Why not just buy original Circle Jerks shows?

I much prefer retrospective concert DVD's to these new fangled reunion albums.

thenightprowler (March 29, 2005)

Great DVD; but yes the commentary is a mixed bag. It's bad because Keith doesn't know what to say but hearing Zander ramble on and on trying to fill in because Keith isn't saying anything is very amusing so I enjoyed it. Too bad they couldn't get Greg to be a part of the commentary.

TheOneTrueBill (March 29, 2005)

The last album they put out was in 1995.

joeg (March 29, 2005)

washed up? it's not like the circle jerks are still putting out records every other year or even touring on an anywhere near normal touring schedule. for all intents and purposes, they're on one of those long extended hiatus deals. yea their last good record was too far back to remember but they can still kick it live.

Anonymous (March 29, 2005)

i like how if an 80's pop band is still kicking around everyone calls them washed up, but then this band can still crank out products consisting of their own 80's material and they're not considered washed up.

they're washed up.

TheOneTrueBill (March 29, 2005)

They didn't really say anything about that when I saw them. Keith was too busy talking about wanting to perform cunnilingus on Hillary Duff instead of Disney characters like Snow White and Cinderella.

stevejonestherealbones (March 29, 2005)

does that mean you sound really bitter and old complaining about me?

You sound like a bitter old man complaining over the Circle Jerks bitterness, maybe you shouldn't be commenting anymore.

Yeah, the old men still got it

stevejonestherealbones (March 29, 2005)

when i saw these guys all they did was complain about sum 41 and avrl lavine. not that those bands can touch this bands past, but it got old real quick and made them sound like really bitter petty old men...

they shouldnt be playing anymore.
