Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)
Register to Vote: Rock the Vote, powered by Credo Mobile

Four years. 48 months. 1461 days. 35,064 hours. 2,103,840 minutes. 126,230,400 seconds. That is very roughly how long it has been since Bane destroyed the scene with their powerful anthems and an unmatched energy and knowledge of what hardcore is. In that short 126,230,400 seconds, the scene has seen a huge change. Metalcore bands populate the earth and their legions of fans don make-up and wear pants too short for them in an effort to fit into a scene almost as ridiculous as their get-up. Those of us that felt the scene was dying have seen a turnaround in the past couple years, and the second coming has now arrived. The new Bane album The Note has arrived to bring the world to its knees in a blast of feverish energy.

Listening to Bane has always felt like being hit in the face with a huge bag of bricks. Aaron Bedard failed vocal lessons. The guitars punish you with an unforgiving brutality, slowly building up into a supernova of noise throughout every song. This is Bane. They aren’t out to make new fans, and The Note shows that. It has been four years, and the band has aged and matured, and the new album shows it.

The Note opens with the powerfully quick “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda,” an anthem for the straight-edge kids where Bedard criticizes what it has become but why he is still in it. The song sounds like it is straight off of Give Blood, slowly building up to an explosion behind a driving dual guitar harmony that peaks with about 30 seconds left into a phenomenal harness of rage and energy. Like many of their other songs, “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda” is designed to make the kids go crazy live, but the studio version doesn’t disappoint whatsoever.

There are obvious signs of maturing throughout the album from their last efforts. Where as in Give Blood the band rarely slowed down the frantic pace and instead just destroyed the eardrums with a short and concise blast of thrash under a half hour, The Note shows that Bane has learned to harness the slow build-up even better than before. “Pot Committed” takes a few seconds off for a very calmed stroke of guitars, bass, and light cymbal tapping. It slowly builds up into methodical increase of noise, with a slow and steady beat, never really taking off like it used to in the old days, but the heart is still there.

At times it may seem like age is finally slowing Aaron and the boys down, but six of the songs fall under three minutes and drive along before you even notice they started up. Unfortunately, because of this, the album is a bit shorter than I would hope, but I’ll come back to that later. It has been four years, but Bane still shows they know how to destroy the world in record time. The Note at many times is like a halfway progression from Give Blood. Sometimes it seems like the band has evolved into a slower and tenser version in songs like “End With An Ellipsis,” but just as quickly they fire back with songs like “My Therapy,” ending with the gang vocals screaming about how hardcore saved their lives.

Anyone that has seen Bane live knows what hardcore means to Aaron. The greatest thing about them has been their brutal honesty to a scene and a world that generally needs to be slapped in the face with reality. I don’t think I am going out on a limb to call Bedard one of the more creative songwriters of our generation, and this album doesn’t disappoint. “Wasted On The Young” is one of the more brutally honest songs I have heard in a long time and I can think of more than a handful of people it applies to. One-liners like “It’s like having your mom pick out your clothes for you,” “There is no mistake that I’m not free to make / all because of six strings / stretched across a board” and “When Armageddon’s been locked and loaded / I will come back for you.”

So, it has been four years. Although I can’t get enough of this album right now, one of my biggest complaints is how short it is. At less than half an hour, it is over almost too soon. The Note flows fantastically, but after such a long absence of new material, I had hoped for more. Still, with what Bane has given us this time around, The Note shows a more aged and grizzled version of the band that slays everything. But the energy is still there. The passion is still there. Most of all, the heart is still there, and that already is more than they can say about most bands around.

great album. best songs are "pot commited" "wasted on the young" and "swan song", in my opinion. i could rant and rave about this bands honesty, morals and power, but i don't feel like it. definetly get the CD for the artwork and lyrics. i gave it an 8 because a couple songs feel rushed for the sake of having a full length CD. and the sound quality isn't the best.

second, the reviewer really needs to take bane's dick out of his mouth and make a review without all the ridiculous hyperbole. they're not the second coming of jesus.

Good album, but I can't help but wonder what it would have sounded like if it had the same production quality as "Give Blood". The mix on that album was close to perfect.

So many opinions, so many people have to judge, not just for the music either.
Seeing I am very close to Aaron B, I can say that he loves what he does and as long as people enjoy them playing and their music, then there will always be Bane..

I was just listening to 'Give Blood' and realized that I really like Comeback Kid a lot more than Bane.

Yeah, Bane's records are overrated. Their live show is pretty killer though. I don't like Comeback Kid much either, but I'd take them over Bane.

Not at all. That wasn't my point. I wasn't touting the merits of Conor Oberst (Lord help us) or shitting on Bane.

I just think that the statement made in the review went overboard. If Aaron Bedard is on of the the best lyricists in the xFFSDHCx (Ha!) set, I can deal with that. If he is among the elite lyricists of my generation then I want a new generation.

    Score is for the assumption.

//i wanted this to be the best fucking cd ever it's good, but it wasn't as good as i had hopes //

Again, it's a dense batch of jams from a rock solid group.

a lot of songs on here are just throwaways: "one for the kids", "end with an ellipsis", and "what keeps us here" are all weak songs

//One for the Kids isn't even a track title. And all the songs on here are amazing. Simple as that.//

and i for one think the singing in "swan song" sounds so good

//I'm with you on that one. It gives the song another sense of the apocalypse.//

there's no getting around how bad the production is, too.

    //Truly an understatement.//

Not only did you go out on that limb, you fell out of the tree. If you had kept it limited to the genre, I could see that but... c'mon.

"Not really. For someone to be a great songwriter do they have to do shitty folk-rock or alt. pop?"

No, Wes Eisold when he was in American Nightmare/Give Up The Ghost had some of the best lyrics I've ever read in hardcore music.

The mp3's had me a little worried at first, as they didn't jump out at me like the precious Give Blood did. But when I got ahold of the cd and the lyric sheet...hot damn! The production blows a little, but I think Bedards lyrics are some of the best that he has ever penned. Fucking great. Good review too...

"My comment wasn't meant to imply that bane encourage the practice. My comment was in reference to the fact that the kids who do stage dive feet first are usually into bands such as bane, champion etc. No disrespect to Bane, cool to know that they are attempting to discourage kids from doing this."
I guess my point was that during Bane's set, all those kids left, and there wasn't any of that going on.

    My Score:

for people complaining about stage diving and such (or just generally saying you don't like it)... that is a given... NO ONE likes to be stepped on... So the best solution I have came up with (over the years) has been to steal their shoes and throw them in different directions...

Now about this album... Bane is one of the better hardcore bands playing this kind of stuff... BUT this album is mediocre... my favorite songs were on the 'it all comes down to this' and the 'holding this moment' cds but I thought that the 'give blood' cd was their best overall... 'give blood' was just a solid album... it started strong, ended strong, and there isn't one track i find myself skipping on the entire cd.... 'the note' on the otherhand starts off ok, ends well, and has like 3 or 4 songs that just get skipped every time...

Posted by pwfanatic on 2005-05-21 05:02:06

"that said, it's a good cd, but their weakest as well"

i find the biggest problem with the cd is the huge expactations placed upon it. i am not sure if it is their worst, and that the same time, i am not sure if it is their best. i expect all of us were thinking better considering the time difference between releases, but still, i think that this album grows on you.

but then again, i would hate to place one release as their worst overall. consider it sucking their collective cock, but these guys are one of the best bands around.

    My Score:

This album sounds like what's equivalent to refined b-sides of Give Blood and slower to boot. Only 10 songs and it has been 3 1/2 years since their last release. The subject material is basically the same as Give Blood. Too many songs about the scene. What Keeps Us Here on this record has the same lyrical message as Speechless from Give Blood. It is not a bad record, but it certainly is not great. It is their worst album where as It All Comes Down To This is their best. I think they could have done a way better job. What a let down.

Its a great song, the bridge in it is really cool but it leads to a sorta generic break-down. However, all the elements thrown together make a great track.

Yeah, that's the one that begins with all of that frantic drumming. I dunno, I haven't listened to it in a few years, and can't really remember the chorus. That's usually not a good sign.

Uh, Chinatown, ever heard a song called "Ante Up"?

Prolly my favorite Bane song, ever.

Oh man, PEI. I went to Rainbow Valley a long time ago. I bought a shirt that displayed a bungee-jumping shark wearing sunglasses.

    My Score:

Give Blood was a good album, but nothing too memorable. Out of the 10 tracks, at least 3 of them were pure filler ("What Holds Us Down" being the most generic). Bane have only written one truly amazing song in their career: "Ali V.S. Frazier I."

Actually, I'm an idiot. I just noticed I was reading the link. Let the flaming of PEI local begin.

I didn't read the review yet, but I noticed the reviewer's username is BANE!! This guy is obviously a huge Bane fan, so I think that makes this review a little skeptical. I like it when reviewers aren't obviously huge fans. That way, they will likely be more critical of an album. Sure, some huge fans will be still critical. But I know if I reviewed a propagandhi album, I would probably give it more praise than it deserves, just because they are one of my favorite bands.

What I don't like about this review is that it uses Bane as a sounding board for a diatribe against the rest of hardcore music.

It also brings up Bane as a group seemingly otherworldy when they're simply one of the best bands around.

Of course, some douchebag will use this to say I

    a) hate Bane
    b) hate the reviewer
    c) am a homosexual who enjoys giving oral sex

when all I'm saying is that the review goes a little overboard.

    My Score:

fantastic record. yeah, it's true, there will never be another give blood, but this is certainly a worthy follow up.

the only part that makes me sad is all the references to breaking up and leaving the scene in the lyrics. i will be extremely sad when this band calls it quits.

    what a brutally honest review

    Posted by primeevil7 on 2005-05-20 11:27:13

IT's because the production sounds like Bane's attack was laden down in a swamp.

But the CD fucking slays, no two ways about it. This next tour is going to be amazing since the kids will know the words now to the new songs.

    great live band though

These guys should give up. Terrible.

I've never been *huge* on Bane, but I thought they were improving from one effort to the next. I think this might be where it stops for me. The last half blows by in no time and I always forget I actually have it on.

I also never thought I'd have to say this, but that singing in the last track is so, so cheesy.

Anybody seeing these guys the 29th In Syracuse? It's the Promises' last show ever, and it's going to be fucking incredible.

    My Score:

This will definately make my top 10 for the year.

What people need to get over is that there will NEVER be another "Give Blood". And I'm confused as to what everyone's complaint with the production is. Personally, I like it.
