Well, let's start this review off by saying I am pleasently surprised about this release. I first heard "The Risk" on Ferret's Progression Through Aggression 2 sampler and just loved the song. After listening to two other songs on purevolume, I was hooked.

I don't know what did it for me, but it might be the fact that they're heavier than a lot of bands in this area. One of the biggest problems with emo and screamo bands is they overuse mute guitars, and any time there is some guitars being played, it's too cliché and generic to really stand out. So while Lovehatehero's guitar work is heavier than a majority of the bands in this genre, the guitars sound a lot better than most other bands. They can contrast for a heavier sound and then throw in some clean, melodic guitars, then speed up the pace and get back to a heavier screamo sound. What works here is the fact that the vocals can go with a good shout to a clean vocal style like Efrem of DBS on the heavier parts, to a really good singing voice when it gets clean. This brings a lot of contrast to the album and makes it better than most on the market.

A perfect example of the statements above is their single, "The Risk," and "A Last Farewell." Each song goes between heavy and clean and the music and vocals nail the transition head on for contrast, which is lacking in many bands. Also, the vocals aren't whiny and the lyrics aren't cheesy shit like "I'll cut my wrists." The design for the CD is extremely nice as well, with a good color scheme and nice images as well.

In the end it kind of makes me mad to see bands like this not get much recognition, while bands like Hawthorne Heights are the next craze. Lovehatehero are a good post-hardcore/screamo band that are deserving of your time because of their musical ability and their ability to be good songwriters and establish contrast. I'd suggest you to buy it if you're into this type of music.

They're recording an album some time soon. The one Myspace Bulletin from the band was talking about how they were playing their last LA area shows before going into the studio this summer.

    Can't wait.

Great review! I've felt the same way for a long time now. I was so excited after listening to their songs on purevolume that I bought their cd the day it came out. It really is a shame that this band isn't the attention that it deserves.

I agree that this album is awesome! Recently, I went to a show where all the kids wouldn't really listen to anything they could hear the words to. As long as it was ONLY rah-rah-rah with overdone pointless breakdowns every 30 seconds than it was cool. Those kids are just jumping on the "hardcore" bandwagon. They should die. listen to real music! At a lovehatehero show I went to in AZ, Lovehatehero wasn't "hardcore" enough for some of them. And guess who was headlining? EIGHTEEN FUCKING VISIONS!! And they were all hardcore dancing to 18V!! I was laughing my ass off. It just shows how confused kids are. LOVEHATEHERO ROCKS!!!

    crazytoledo (August 18, 2005)

Ya, I still dont see how people don't realize that this is better than anything in this genre that is getting popular.

Have any of you actually heard this album, it really kicks ass!!

These guys are amazing and they will eventually get the recognition the deserve. I went to there concert yesterday and it killed me to see only 10 other people there. They just need to get there name and there music out there and people will listen.

Dammit Jones. I wanted to point out that buddyheads gun was Born Againsts first. Now I cant prove how cool I am to all the kids....

If you minus like 2 stars off of all this dudes reviews you usually get a pretty accurate score.

I'd never take a suggestion from a person who cant differentiate between your and you're.

Hey, nice review by the way!

Just kidding you're still a literary caveman.

nice on-again, off-again comma usage. if you're going to be a grammar nazi, you should get your own shit straight first.

scores for being a pompous dumbass.
    this album does suck, though.

I really agree that only staffers should write reviews...this is getting out of hand. most of this shit i feel like I've already read back in 2nd grade. I browse through the reviews section and after a few minutes I just give up...theres so goddamned many...and most of em suck.

so maybe we should change that

    Not everyone hates this CD...

    crazytoledo (July 8, 2005)

I liked it and I know some other people who like it...

Its a personal opinion, the reviewer doesnt have to give something a bad score just because he knows others will hate it.

Not as bad as Revolver giving the new Hurt Process a better score than the new Darkest Hour release...

    Anonymous (July 8, 2005)

I'd suggest you to buy it if your into this type of music.

I'd never take a suggestion from a person who cant differentiate between your and you're.

    Seriously, dude.

I heard this cd and thought it was the biggest joke ever.
"what the hell is this? are labels seriously considering this to make them money?"

    And you're giving it a 9?!

This is like really bad senses fail, and that's just stupid.

    theundergroundscene (July 8, 2005)

    omg dude

    Anonymous (July 8, 2005)

I "just breathe"...right before I take a big shit. It really helps the entire process. So, before your next big shit just take a minute..you'll see.

    and this album sucks.

    ferret records sucks too.

so like you gave finch a 1 but this an 8?

    wtf

    Anonymous (July 8, 2005)

aside from the fact that this is not a good peice of music, i think this is a pretty well done review. it's informative, doesn't gush for the sake of gushing, does a reasonable job of describing the music and i like the notes on the artwork/packaging.... now, go like better music.

    Anonymous (July 8, 2005)

i'd love to agree with you on the 'staffers only' petition, but occasionally some good stuff comes out of random people... besides, you can always just laugh at the garbage.
