Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

About halfway through the Gorilla Biscuits set, Civ told the packed CBGBs crowd they were going to be playing everything...everything. So if you want a set list, look at the back of their albums because they pretty much played it all. It was nearly an hour and a half of pure bliss.

Now don't get me wrong; GB broke up before I'd ever heard of them. From what I understand, Start Today came out when I was in 8th grade. I'm 30 now. A lot of the screamo kids with bad haircuts who went to the Warped Tour this year weren't even alive in 1989. So I'm proud to say later that night as I walked out of the club, I got my diploma. I graduated from middle school to old school.

I've seen a lot of punk and hardcore bands over the past 13 years or so. This was one of the shows you realize you made the right choice when you decided to listen to this genre of music in the first place.

When the horns came over the speakers, heads got stepped on. Then Walter played the familiar opening chord of "New Direction" and Civ ran out saying "New York Hardcore, this is for you." I don't think I've ever seen a more passionate crowd. All the glorious trademarks of a NYHC show were there...the finger pointing, the stage diving, the singalongs, pile-ons...it was beautiful.

Amazingly, after not playing together for all those years, the Biscuits sounded pretty tight. They tore through the classics with all the inspiration and fury you'd expect, barely missing a note. Civ may have had it easiest. The crowd sang just about all the songs for him.

Towards the end of the show, respect was paid to friends of the band and the scene who have since passed on, including Raybeez. From there, GB played an amazing version of Warzone's "As One." Absolutely sick. The crowd sang 95 percent of it. Of course, the closer was "Start Today" with Walter on the harmonica.

You should be jealous if you didn't see this show in person or on the Internet. It was something to behold and cherish. I'm forever grateful to Walter for allowing me to be a part of it and to the rest of the band for getting it together one last time to save the cathedral that housed it all.

A few other bands played that I didn't see due to a scheduling conflict, but I did catch some of Black Train Jack's set. I wasn't really too big on them back in the day, but they had a good amount of fans there and sounded pretty tight as well.

    My Score:

Just thought I'd say... I'm from Colombia, South America. I waited for 15 hours just to see those guys. What did I get? Gorilla Biscuits at CBGB's, front row... holy crap. I got to sing a few words on the mic. Then I lost about to hours in subway traffic cause there was no way to go to queens... do i regret it? no fucking way

Could someone e-mail the whereabouts of the Black Train Jack video? Last time I saw them was in Syracuse, NY, back in 1994, in an opening spot for Sick of it All. Great show, and BTJ had all the Earth Crisis kids going nuts.

Also, does anyone know if they're going to be any other shows, os was that a one-off for the CBs benefit?

Posted by stevejonestherealbones on 2005-08-20 14:25:42

did they have fall out boy come on stage to help them with their songs?

can't you read? seems pretty clear to me.

"how are you 30 yrs old and never heard of gorilla biscuits???"

he said they broke up before he was born, not that he hadn't heard of them. obviously, he has.

Man, did anyone record the GB set on their computer?

Posted by lushj on 2005-08-18 20:39:56

Just heard the CIV song "Wait One Minute More" on a Nissan radio commercial. Yeesh. That was a great record though.

"We need to see the BLACK TRAIN JACK set so badly ... someone recorded it?!?! I`d kill for it!"

See, this is why anonymous posts are no good. If you had an id, I could tell you their set was video taped, and I could tell you when and how it can be available.

she's not even into them. she think she'll be able to stand there and enjoy the show. she doesn't know what she is in for.

    "how so douche bag?"

um...thas a pretty fuckin sexist comment. let her do whatever the fuck she pleases. she has just the same right to see KD as you.

I only saw the stream, but other than everyone looking older ( I imagine) and weirder (Wally?) things were no different back in 1987/88 in terms of stage presence and the "mob" going wild. Gorilla Biscuits used to get a lot of heat back in 1987/ 88, but I am glad they are getting the tremendous amount of respect they earned and rightfully deserve.

    My Score:

My score is for the show, not the review. Why did you even put Black Train Jack in the review heading when you didn't even see them? Here's my review of the show:

First, I video taped the line waiting to get into the show, asking if any of them had tickets, all of which didn't. I knew full well that they'd get to see GB one way or another. Then the hurricane rain set in. I got soaked outside while watching kids wrestle in puddles on the side of the street. Everyone on the guest list still had to wait to get in,and pay the 30 bucks. I didn't mind waiting, just wish I brought an umbrella!

Got in toward the end of the first band's set. Don't remember the name, but they were screammetal core anyway. The First Step was decent fast hardcore, a band that totally fit in for the show.

Now, I'm probably a little biased about BTJ, since Brian and Rob are my friends, but what a great fucking set. I'd say the only thing that went wrong was when Ernie tried to play the harmonica part on "the struggle" Aside from that, fucking great. They played: Time, Mad Doll, Guy Like Me, Leapfrog, Doesn't Matter, Someday, Handouts, The Struggle, Lottery, Regrets, and of course, No Reward. And when they hit the sing along for No Reward, the crowd was going nuts, including me.

After the show, Brian said he felt like a kid again, and would totally do more shows if everyone else did.

Now that was a pretty good spot on GB. But failing to mention how Civ was all over the stage, making sure everyone, whether in front or to the side of the stage got sing along. And made sure everyone got some water too. Amazing show. GB did indeed play EVERYTHING. My personal favorite being him dedicating a song to our friend Nicole, and then playing "Slut" Classic. Starting with "New Direction" and ending with "Start Today", perfection!!!

This show was definately what hardcore is really about. Having fun, sing alongs, and doing it for the people that matter, the kids!

I'd take a trip to Toronto just to see Career Suicide and Fucked Up play. Two of the best newer hardcore punk bands I can think of.

Score is for the "finger pointing" in the NY scene. I don't like people pointing at me, personally.

Not only do those areas of OUR country produce hardcore more competent than that fucking H20 bullshit, just take a look at Sweden and Japan right now.. admit it toughguy, NYHC is general pretty weak stuff.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 7:12 PM (EDT)

I am the "fucking idiot," and I say good "harcore" or whatever rife misspelling you chose comes from:

Toronto, Ontario (just tell me that Fucked Up suck)
Austin, TX (ditto w/ World Burns to Death, Spazm 151)

I just pulled those three titans outta my ass, since I am at work and cannot dedicate much more than a millisecond to dispense of your silly rebuttal.

Yes, I'd add Minneapolis and Oakland as well to my list of cities that produce competent hardcore.

I used those older bands as examples, and I will add a band a bit more recent for you edification: Inhuman. Worst fucking meathead band ever, possibly.

The Midwest and Minneapolis (especially Havoc Records stuff) has the best hardcore punk/crust I can think of. Just look at:

Caustic Christ / Aus Rotten / Behind Enemy Lines(Pittsburgh)
    Brother Inferior (Oklahoma)
    Damage Deposit (Minneapolis)
    Destroy (same)
    Code 13 (same)
    Civil Disobedience (Michigan)
    Nine Shocks Terror (Cleveland)
    Assembly of God (Oklahoma)

for examples. Finding bands like this made me like hardcore a lot more than I used to - the effort of weeding through bullshit metalcore and tough guy paid off.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 3:54 PM (EDT)

PS- How can you deny how great Minneapolis' scene is?

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 3:50 PM (EDT)

Well, I thought we were talking about hardcore...

The Midwest is fucking IT for hardcore, right now. And I'm not talking about Metalcore. Actually, now that I think about it, the East Coast has a lot of great bands.

I don't think you should rule thrash out as for what you "don't like"... It's the underground answer for people who don't like metal or grind... Precision chops just sound annoying to some.

    Oakland? Minneapolis?

Let me guess, some thrash bands playing music that no one but you and 11 other kids like?

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 1:37 PM (EDT)

Philly is a fucking joke, just like the Eastern Seaboard. Minneapolis, MN and Oakland, CA are where it's at.

NY isn't all meathead "shit", though. You're thinking of bands from 15 years ago then declaring them crap.

Y'know, without getting nostalgic, NYHC is pretty lame, the good Leftover Crizzack aside. most of that shit is stupid meathead stuff. Think Warzone, Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, Murphy's Law.... lame. What is it with you NY/Boston dudes, that you can't come up with competent hardcore?

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 10:50 AM (EDT)

I think it's a pretty good review, just lacking comment on the opening bands.

Man, even the webcast was fucking amazing. It was like, More then an hour long, and I thought perhaps it would drag through someparts, but it didn't, it would've been awesome to be there. The pit looked brutal, straight out of the oldschool, with a bunch of sweaty kids packed into club with a low cieling.
