Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

The Living End are easily one of Australia's greatest punk bands ever. However, they aren't too big in the U.S.A. Sure, they have a few songs hit the radio every once in a while and maybe a commerical or two (that's where I first heard of them), but overall, they are fairly unkown. I feel sorry for those who haven't experienced them yet.

They have a new album hitting early 2006, but if you haven't heard them yet, you definitely need to check out their first, self-titled full-length, which is easily one of the best albums ever.

The Living End are a three-piece with Chris being simply amazing on the guitar, Scotty playing (and doing cool tricks) on his standup bass, and Trav hitting the drums. While they have the standup bass, they shouldn't be classified as psychobilly, but they do have plenty of influnce from that genre as well as touches of ska mixed in with a bit of old Ramones-ish pop-punk.

The album starts out with their classic single "Prisoner of Society," which can pretty much be a theme song for anyone. It's a great start to such a classic album, and then they never let down with the remaining thirteen tracks.

The thing I like most about the Living End is their upbeat, happy aproach to their music. They sound happy even when singing about serious subjects, like "Monday," which is about a school shooting and is probably the best song on the album.

But the Living End do take their music really seriously. As I mentioned, Chris is just amazing on his guitar and it really shows during his various ripping solos. The opening to "All Torn Down" may be one of music's greatest moments.

I've heard people compare these guys to Green Day, Rancid, U2, and the Clash. I really don't like any of those bands, but the Living End is my favorite band, so go figure. I know taste in music is very selective, but trust me on this: The Living End are one of the best groups out there. Go pick up this CD. It's their best, but their others are great too. And if you like them, go to their site and tell them how much you do. They kick major ass live, so hopefully, we can get them to come over here again.

I don't really know how people can compare The Living End to the majority of the punk bands on this site. The best thing about them is they have created their own sound, you can tell a living end song straight away. I've seen them live and they are amongst the most talented bands you could ever see. Chris dominates the guitar and vocals. This album is their best. Monday, Save the Day, and Second Solution are the songs that stand out for me. All you americans should get into them! Don't be ignorant and bag aussie music when you probably haven't heard any. And they don't sound a thing like Fall Out Boy.

What the fuck is up with this total lack of knowledge about psychobilly? Everyone acts like the Horrorpops invented it. But then the oldschool psychos say it was Tiger Army. Now, I'm not one to say who did it, but fuck, this stuff has been developing forever. Look to the 80s with Stray Cats. And more importantly, NO ONE ever mentions The Reverend Horton Heat? WTF? All these new bands would kiss his ass hardcore given the chance.

how can you compare TLE to Simple Plan or Fall Out Boy?! first off, TLE is actually talented... chris & scott can actually sing, and you know what? they are all REAL musicians, they can ACTUALLY PLAY MUSIC! i've been a fan of them 8 years now... if they're drawing comparisons, it should be more to the clash and rev. horton heat mixed together... not those two cheesetastic bands... geez... moving on... TLE is an awesome band... this album is awesome and so are all their other ones....

i can garuntee "Australians want nothing to do with this band. They're the Australian equivalent to Simple Plan." is not the case, this guys just an idiot.

living end have a massive following in australia, and fair enough too - they are an amazing band, even if you dont like their music most people can appreciate how talented they are.

I don't know, it's not surprising. They're helluv poppy, they've been on a major for years, and they're a much bigger band there than they are here. I still think they rock, but I understand why he doesn't.

i suggest seeing an ENT doc because the living end sounds nothing like fob.....oh wait, they're both melodic, how remiss of me.

ok, off the topic of the living end for a couple of seconds, i was browsing purevolume.com, and i discovered the shittiest band in the history of music...

...any body else out there discovered any laughable purevolume.com bands?

People who compare Living End to FOB make me absolutely hate this site.

Posted by TahoeJeff on 2005-10-10 07:47:30

Great album, not too good of a review though. Trav aint on the drums anymore.

Posted by lushj on 2005-10-10 01:15:50
    My Score:

This score is for the review. Pretty useless as a review, but useful to build a resume to join their US street team. People've already mentioned why ("easily one of the best albums ever"), but let me add one more. On this site, a band who's toured opening for Green Day, headlined over Flogging Molly, played Warped (on the main stage, if I remember right), had songs in tv commercials, and had songs in major motion pictures, is NOT "fairly unknown." If this was People Magazine dot com, fine. Even dinosaur rags like Rolling Stone love this band.

That bitchiness aside, The Living End are an absolutely rad band. I really think this record and "Roll On" are incredible pop-rockabilly-ska-punk records that combine the best of Green Day with the best of the Stray Cats. So yeah, their influences are really obvious, but they write such undeniable singalong tunes that it's not a problem.

Posted by kamatacci on 2005-10-10 01:08:05

IMO, the albums go like this:

    S/T
    It's For Your Own Good
    Modern ARTillery
    Roll On
    Hellbound

all of them are great though. Roll On is for sure one of my favorite songs by them, but I think overall, MA is a bit better album.

Posted by kenfuggit on 2005-10-09 23:35:05

Wait, how have people not heard of this band? They toured with the frigging Offspring when I was in High School. I saw them at warped tour twice. I figured they kept putting out albums after that, right?

Posted by blinkrules on 2005-10-09 23:33:36

"The first two songs are the same style of song of anything FOB has done"

yup Prisoner of Society sounds just like Grand Theft Autumn.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 9, 2005 at 9:53 PM (EDT)

The guy is a good guitar player but a lot of the songs are waaaaay too long. This is not a 5 star album.

I've said this before to friends and I'll say it again here: If they had just signed to Fat, they would have had a steady fan base and a much longer career. New punk bands signing to majors in 1998 (or so) = huge backlash. I tried to explain to so many kids how good this album was back in the day but no one would hear of it because it was on the radio.

I really love the Living End, but I've never heard this entire album. A perfect score seems questionable though. I'm not saying you are wrong, because I haven't heard it all, but Roll On was a phenomenal album. Is it better than that? Please tell me yes and I will buy a copy immeadiately.

This review was pretty good, but here's how I would make it better:

    1. Is there any argyle in the artwork?

    2. Argyle is the new pink is the new black is the new black

    3. What three-piece is better, the living-end, or KFC 3 piece combo?

    4. Keep in mind you can choose your pieces with KFC, not with TLE

    5. How come there are no KFC reviews?

    6. I'm going to write one

Posted by CallingLondon on 2005-10-09 13:43:32
    My Score:

their latest was pretty damn overpolished, and the band's edge was considerably rounded (parts that would normally be gang vocals became chris multitracked) and some of the songs relied less on guitar hooks and more on pop melody hooks, but it was a good album nonetheless. the room might be the best song of their career.

How can you say that this doesn't sound like Fall Out Boy? The first two songs are the same style of song of anything FOB has done, you could put them in the middle of any FOB and I wouldn't second guess it. After the intermission the album is a lot better, much more inventive and different. The last song reminds me much more of Gatsby's American Dream than FOB.

This is one of my top 5 favorite albums. They're awesome (in the true sense of the word) live, such great energy and they're all really friendly guys.
I saw them for the second time last year, in Louisville KY and there was only about 100 or 200 people there. They played at least one song from every album, including the EPs. Here's how I'd rate their albums:
    1. Self-Titled
    2. Hellbound
    3. It's For Your Own Good
    4. Modern ARTillery
    5. Roll On

I'm really suprised people like this band. I thought their latest effort "Modern Artillery (sp?)" kinda sucked but their other releases have been fucking spot on.
I remember seeing these guys play at The Fillmore with Flogging Molly opening. That show was the shit! Best part is when the dude in the pit got his facial ring of some sort ripped out. That looked mighty painful (but he was alright so it was kinda funny).
Then i remember they opened for Jet...That probably sucked.
    This album isn't a 10, but it's damn good.

I love this album, and I think it probably is their most solid release.

But the review bothered me. C'mon "one of musics best moments ever"? psh. Don't make offhand comments like that, because music is all about taste. Just review the cd and tell how well done it is, you don't need to say anything more.

That being said, I agree that you must have a problem if you visit this site at all and you don't like the Living End, because they're just that likable. And they are incredible live. And really nice guys.

For the best book on the Ramones read,
"On The Road With The Ramones"
    http://hometown.aol.com/ramonesontheroad/myhomepage/boo ks.html

This is a MUST-HAVE book for all Ramones fans. It's an inside look from the people who were actually there witnessing and experiencing all the extreme highs and lows one of rock's greatest bands. It's such a fascinating read, I had a hard time putting it down, and I think you will too. Buy it, read it, and then revisit their albums. You'll never look at the Ramones in the same light.

I can't believe, that in retrospect, that "Prisoner of Society" was a big radio hit when it was out. The song is too good and too fast for mainstream radio. And this was back in 1998 too!

I always forget how much I love this band every time I listen to them. Roll On was one of my favorites when it came out, I wasn't too into Modern ARTillery when it first came out but it definitly grew on me.

They need to do another US tour and tour with some good bands. I saw them twice the summer after Roll On came out, once with Green Day and once at Warped. So great. I'm listening to this while I fall asleep tonight.
