In 1992, three guys in high school named Mike, Andy, and Yuri got together and formed a band called Magnified Plaid. By the time they graduated in 1995, the boys from Bremerton, WA (who eventually shortened their band name to MxPx) had already signed to a record label and recorded two albums -- Pokinatcha and Teenage Politics (Andy was replaced by Tom after Pokinatcha). The summer after graduation, they would go on their first U.S. tour and would explode in the pop-punk scene, recording the popular Life in General the following year. Life in General seems to be the favorite album among most MxPx fans, and over the years has overshadowed what, in my opinion, is an amazing album: Teenage Politics.

Most of you have probably made up your mind about MxPx by this point. They’ve been making solid pop-punk music for 13 years now, and I can always count on them when I’m in the mood for fast, positive pop-punk music. Their second album, Teenage Politics, put a heavier emphasis on the punk and less on the pop, and lyrically covered everything from life in high school and politics (go figure) to matters of faith. Yes, this would be the last MxPx album that would talk about God directly. Something tells me that Mike had a reality check after he left high school into the real world. But even so, only a few of the 19 tracks on this disc mention religion in any form or fashion. If you cannot handle hearing a song or two about someone’s faith, then don’t bother listening.

The songs on this album are blazing fast and each of the 19 songs have its own unique sound to it, so they don’t sound all the same (which was the problem with their first album, Pokinatcha). It’s the kind of music that you’d listen to on a sunny day with the windows rolled down, as you recollect the fun times you had growing up in high school. There isn’t a dull moment on the entire CD; it is truly one that you can listen to all the way through without skipping a song.

The most popular song on this album, of course, is "Punk Rawk Show." While it is certainly not the best song on the disc, it has emerged as MxPx’s most identifiable song (with the possible exception of "Chick Magnet") and has remained a fan favorite at their shows since. Other highlights include “Moneytree,” where Mike explains why he won’t be going off to college: “Four more years ain’t right for me, I don’t think so. Won’t let them teach me how to be a moneytree.” This is also the only MxPx album where Mike really shows his political views, such as in the song “Americanism:” “Would you die for your country? False freedom and liberty. They’re lying when they tell us this is the home of the brave and land of the free.

If the only albums you have heard from MxPx are their later releases, you should consider giving this one a chance. While I still love their newer material, this album definitely has a rawer and faster feel to it. In fact, the only downside about this CD would be the fact that Mike’s voice has not quite fully matured yet, and is not as strong as it is in the post-Life in General era. The fact that they recorded these classic songs while they were still in high school says a lot about this band and leads me to appreciate it even more.

life in general is a 9. let it happen, for a bsides album, is amazing. SGTWOTB is pretty good. their new album might be ok, i havent given it a chance yet.

and c'mon, mikes lyrics arent that bad. SGTWOTB is full of lyrics with double meanings. LIG has simple but fun lyrics. his new stuff might not be amazing, but he did write some pretty godd stuff back in the day.

It's not like it matters that much. I'm Jewish and I happen to love Skrewdriver. What? It has a good beat and you can dance to it."

For those that hold the band's faith over their heads, get a clue and be more open minded like you preach. Intolerance breeds hatred. So what if Christian kids liked this band, they had just as much right as anyone else did(do). Most of those same kids(Christians) probably listened to Bad Religion, Face to Face, Nofx, etc. at the time too. I know I did.

Or perhaps you're retarded and ignorant to the truth?

After the original attacks on the towers, Clinton had an opportunity to take action and did absolutely nothing. This gave terrorists the green light to plan another, more devastating attack. Had Clinton done something to retaliate.....9/11 likely would have never happened.

Nothing about the Bush agenda has changed one iota since he took office, yet since 9-11 peoples' opinions have seen a change of a full 53 percentage points. As for Moneytree... maybe if Herrera had spent more time in school he'd be able to write semi-interesting lyrics... or at least rip off better people.

    Because his shit is LAME.

Definitely one of the Top 5 worst lyricists to be in a "big" punk band.

    My Score:

As a former dedicated listener of MxPx I can safely say "Teenage Politics" is their least listenable album. The 19 songs within this disc are marked by memorably corny lines ("Never wanna be a money tree...a money tree!") and loathsome, cringe inducing backup vocals. That said, "Slowly Going the Way of The Buffalo" and "Life in General" were staples in my CD rotation throughout my "middle-teens" and a few of those songs still sneak their way on to my iPod for nostalgic listening purposes.

this album doesnt deserve a 10. actually, none of their cds do. slowly going... is the best, but even that has at least 5 filler songs that were completely unnecessary.

mxpx was fun when i was in middle school, but most of their songs just dont hold up anymore.

"The Ever Passing Moment was hated too when it first came out, but a lot of MxPx fans now think it was their most mature and all-around best effort."

No one thinks this, and if they do....I'll gut them like fish.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, October 24, 2005 at 3:54 AM (EDT)

They had some hooks and some fast drums.

    That's it.

Sure, an enjoyable live show if you're running around and not really listening.

Mundane pithy lyrics, bad vocals, irritating banter, etc. etc.

This is not the canonical band that some people are trying to make them out as.

    Posted by the_other_scott on 2005-10-24 01:42:38

yeah the kids that i knew that liked MxPx liked them for playing pop punk

that was in junior high, when nobody really cared about religion and politics

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, October 24, 2005 at 12:59 AM (EDT)

Yea its funny because a lot of MxPx fans HATED Life In General when it first came out (for reasons varying from the lyrical content to the style change).... now almost every single one of them say its their best album.

That goes for any band - it always takes a few years before it really sinks in with fans and becomes a classic. The Ever Passing Moment was hated too when it first came out, but a lot of MxPx fans now think it was their most mature and all-around best effort.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, October 24, 2005 at 12:43 AM (EDT)

the fact that they stood for shit they believed in, regardless of how it differentiated them from their peers was always impressive to me

Yeah, but they toned it way down and changed when they started to get really popular and, if you are old enough to remember, got a ton of shit from the Christian kids when "Life in General" came out for abandoning the gospel, which probably wasn't entirely fair. Going to an MxPx show back then, you could count on kids stopping you and asking if you had "found God." I saw them years later in the fall of 1999 (not the first time I saw them, but an anecdote ...) and there were kids with backpacks of those little handheld bibles handing them out to everyone. I even got hit with some with I was in the pit (people throwing them up into the air).

What else did MxPx write about back then? Come on... their lyrics were always super super primitive 9th grade poetry in terms of quality, sophistication, and depth of thought. That doesn't mean that you couldn't jump around to them, but there wasn't a lot going on there.

    Posted by the_other_scott on 2005-10-24 00:06:50

in a sort-of backwards way, i always thought the fact that they were christian was the most "punk" thing about them

the fact that they stood for shit they believed in, regardless of how it differentiated them from their peers was always impressive to me

that being said, i always thought of them as pretty mediocre, and i always felt weird listening to mxpx and bad religion at the same time

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 23, 2005 at 11:58 PM (EDT)

This wasn't the end of Mike's Christian Lyrics...

On the next few records there were references, although not as blatant...

Even on the ever passing moment mike quotes scripture...

I actually completly agree with you. A lot of bands, such as yellowcard, hate George Bush because it is the "punk" thing to do. I hate uniteeligent criticism, but I also don't like hypocricsy. If you like Bush, so be it, but then don't put out an ati- Bush album the following year to boost sales. Maybe I'm being too critical, but this is a message board so I could care less.

I have a soft spot for "Life in General", but I'm not really sure if any MXPX songs could be considered all that classic.

Also it's weird to hear pro-Jesus parts in punk songs, however poppy and non-hardcore they may be. However, it's too small of an aspect of their music to be the only thing anyone comments on anytime anything about MXPX is posted, though.

    1) there is no truth to that statement whatsoever

    2) when was it ever popular to openly support Bush?? on the contrary, it was popular to bash Bush (the whole Rock Against Bush comp)

Uh, I seem to remeber them talking to MTV reporters about how Dubya was really great for this country and that punks should respect him more. Then after the explosion of the Rock Against Bush comp. they put out Panic. They are hypocrites.

And wered you completly stoned out of your mind during the post 911 hysteria? Back when he had an approval rating of 87%? Wake up.

This CD was alright, I really loved it a couple of years ago, but since I've realized that the lyrics are mundane and childish. Still, it's a fun CD. MXPX is nothing more than a fun band, and their politics should never be taken seriously, as they openly supported Bush back when it was popular.

    My Score:

No MXPX album should ever be a 10. I loved this CD back in the day, I still get the old "memory Boner" when I listen to this and Life in General. I mean I recorded that shit to tape so I could listen to it in my tape deck before I had a protable cd-player. It was so good at the time.
However, I also had never seen real boobs, driven a car, had a beer, or listened to Black Flag. I still think this is a good pop punk album and I love the memories but a 7 at best.

He doesn't sound like a cruel or mean guy, but he certainly comes off as an asshole.

I really like the breakdown on track 10 or 11 on this disc. I don't remember, but it sort of stops for a second and Mike sings:

"And I look to you.... Jesus, Yes I do!!!"

    HILARIOUS!!!

God is mentioned on Track 2 of Buffalo and a bunch in the back half of The Ever-Passing Moment.

this is the first MxPx i ever heard. so i'm probably biased. i can see that LiG and SGtWotB are much better and more 'mature' (as if that matters), but i have a soft spot for this album just becuase of nostalgia.

Ya, I dunno about this 5-star stuff either - and I bought this CD a couple years after it came out when I was into MxPx. Life in General and MAYBE Going the Way... are the only MxPx albums one could consider 5-star. There is still too much growing as a band on this album to be worth more than 4 stars, especially in a day and age where a million people have done it better since.

    Fight the hype.
