Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Gorilla Biscuits are fucking awesome. I can listen to this CD on repeat for hours and not get bored with it. Thanks for reading my review.

I guess maybe I should say a little bit more, but I'm gonna keep it short. GB play fast, short hardcore punk. Chances are if you're the kind of kid that would like this, you've already got it, but I'll bet there are plenty of younger kids out there listening to bands like Paint It Black who have never heard this and would fucking love it. I'm writing this for your sake.

There's so much that could be said that it's hard for me to think of what absolutely needs to be said to get a kid to check this out. The lyrics are pretty much always great, encouraging positive shit. Sometimes they're even kind of funny, like in "Finish What You Started." Gang vocals shout out "Finish what you started! Be open hearted. Don't be retarded! Just finish what you started!" Oh fuck, and I gotta mention the vocals; in almost every song at one point or another, Civ's voice reaches its peak and cracks and squeaks. And when I say squeaks, I mean squeaks. It rules.

Gorilla Biscuits were some kids who played punk rock the best way they could and the best way they knew how. It's fast, it's sloppy, and it's awesome. Albums like this remind me what punk rock really is and why I love it so much.

By the way, I hate having to give albums stars and numbers. If you give an album a 9/10, that's practically a B+, but if you give it a 10, kids will bitch. A five could mean an average album to some people, and it could mean a failure of an album to others. Everyone interprets the numbers differently. So ignore my fucking star count, read the words and interpret it for yourself. I'm giving it a 9 just to appease you fuckers who will bitch about too many albums getting a 10.

All depends what era you were in GB definately up there. I have to say Age of Quarrel is hands down the greatest hardcore album EVER. Mags without John is not the Mags. Harley ripped but there a lot of good bassist No one can match John Joseph.

What about Negative FX and DYS?? Bunch of noobs here.

    Will,
If an edge band smokes pot, then yes they are fake ass bitches. stop trying to act like you know anything about hardcore.
Because its apparent that you are still in highschool..and a noob. if you actually listen to gb and were able to comprehend 'words' and 'lyrics' instead of just listening to the music maybe hardcore would mean something more than a highshool trend to you.

minor threat equals to hardcore, so every band after them is just hardcore-influenced by them

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 27, 2005 at 4:54 PM (EDT)

No, I care about the underground ethic. Whether the band likes to (omygawsh!) smoke a little pot or drink is not really a concern.

Your argument only supports the de-evolution of hardcore into a puritanical, tough guy mess.

Youth of Today were and still are a bunch of sellout faggots.
there are PICTURES of them smoking pot behind CBGBs and the ass kicking that ray cappo got.

some band, i forget who, wrote a song about Cappo getting his ass kicked in buffalo because he claimed edge yet smoked pot. if anyone knows that band, please post.

I have a beef with the overrated comment. I got into GB from listening to Youth of Today and Agnostic Front back when all those bands were still around. The first time I heard the entire start today album I knew they OWNED. The way they combined octave chord melodies, hardcore tom-based drum beats and postive lyrics was amazing. Every NYHC band had their selling point - ray's voice and jumps, Pete and Lou's voice and look, Roger's history and tattoos. I'm not trivializing those bands by any means, but when you were a kid those were the big differences you noticed. The GB's brought catchy songs and melody. Everyone from the Youth Crew kids ot the All/Bad Religion kids loved GB. I don't think it's possible for them to be overated.

Yeah, Wrecking Crew Balance of terror..great record...and to be honest my 10 magical HC list would be:
    1.) Negative Approach
    2.) Youth of Today
    3.) Gorilla Biscuits
    4.) Uniform Choice & Unity
    5.) Insted
    6.) Sheer Terror
    7.) Bad Brains
    8.) Cro Mags
    9.) Sheer Terror
    10.) Agnostic Front - SOIA - Warzone

Will is my new dot-org hero. Until he has a subjective opinion I disagree with again. Yeah. Youth Of Today = WAY better band.

And for cracking vocals, check out... fuck, there was a band POINTLESS from deepest NJ around that time. If you can dig out a copy of their demo or a copy of the Philly Zine tape comp I put out in 1987 or 1988 "Are You Too Cool?" you can hear some great youth crew cracked-vocals from a 16-year-old. Shit, now that I think of it, I don't think I ever heard of them after that time. Anyone have any clue of what happened to them? (my e-mail's in my profile if you do know what happened to them/where to find their music on-line)

"It was like, when the dark ages ended."

Hrm, I disagree... Early US hardcore was definitely more vibrant and all around more quality than the grindcore/powerviolence cloneband wave. And I really like a lot of grind and powerviolence, but it seems to get bogged down with clones.

Or maybe you meant it was the effective start of real second wave hardcore.

1988-1989 were pretty magical years for hardcore. It was like, when the dark ages ended. No comment was playing and Infest and Crossed out had either just started, or were about to start. Slap a ham put out its first record in 1989...

Jesse, when are you going to stop insulting bands that many people enjoy? No shit many people here have limited knowledge of hardcore or its origins but to say that Gorilla Biscuits and Kid Dynamite are mediocore is pretty off-base. They weren't original but for the time that each band was around they definitely got the hardcore ideal down pat

Posted by FuckYouOiOiOi on 2005-10-24 01:59:09

Great fucking review man, "I could listen to this on repeat for hours". Fuck yeah. I love this band, they truly epitimize what punk rock should be. Sloppy, fast, aggressive, and energetic.

What the hell is wrong with everyone? Gorilla Biscuits didn't invent hardcore. This stuff is passable. It's nothing special. Neither is Kid Dynamite. Both are mediocre hardcore bands. And don't even get me started on Comeback Kid or Bane or Paint it Black. None of these groups really get it right.

Anyone who thinks the Gorilla Biscuits were overrated is a douchebag, plain and simple. You most likely just got into hardcore/punk recently. GB were some kids who put out arguably some of the best hardcore ever. They played from their hearts and never tried to be what was popular or conform. I think a person would be hardpressed to name 5 hardcore bands better than they were. The only bands I can think of that were in their league are/were SOIA, Youth and Snapcase. I can remember going to CIV shows years after GB broke up and kids would always go the craziest when "Sittin round at home" was played.

    My Score:

This was the first 7" I bought when I was getting into punk rock in the early 90s and it still rocks as hard now as it did then. It reminds me why I ever got into this music in the first place. Crazy to think its over 15 years old now!

Anyone who thinks this band is overrated needs to step back and take a look outside of the inner circle of punk rock to see that this band never got nearly the amount of credit they deserve.

GB represents a time when bands didn't have to have a personal stylist and a bunch of kids could get together to play music and just fucking rage.

    Hardcore, motherfuckers.

hey will, i don't think paint it black are a throwback to this sort of hardcore either. i was trying to think of a popular band that young kids listen to nowadays that have fans who would also appreciate GB -PiB came to mind.

GB are alright, but it's not the best hardcore by a long shot. Some of their songs are really great ("Things We Say"), then some of it is just completely mediocre. I'd take DC hardcore over '88 hardcore anyday.

i dont look at album scores like grades because thats fucked up. that means anything that is not an 8, 9 , or 10 is really poor, but that shouldnt be the case. i dont look at a 70% for average for albums, i look at 5 being average.
