This album, the cryptically titled Production Thru Destruction, is the first album by early `90s Minneapolis band Misery. Misery is one of the bands that shaped the modern crust sound, along with their better-known NYC counterparts, Nausea. The LP was released on Profane Existence in 1992, but the CD was reissued this past year.

Production Thru Destruction is, all in all, a pretty cool CD. Basically, it sounds like Amebix, but with some really throaty vocals. The lyrics are all usual crusty topics: Nuclear war, animal testing, evil corporations, and, of course, more nuclear war. The guitars are fuzzy, like Icons of Filth, but also really heavy, like Amebix’s. So, basically, if you’re looking for metallic, left-wing crust that still has a punk rock core, that’s basically what you’re gonna get.

The disc’s biggest problems are the fact that the tracks seem to run together (well, it is crust), and that it seems a little overdone. Then again, maybe this kind of band was original in 1992. Personally, I don’t think it’s as good as Nausea, but from what I’ve heard, Misery gets better on their later releases.

The packaging is kind of dumb. The back of the case has song titles in gothic lettering superimposed over a picture of skulls. I don’t think that putting a picture of skulls on an album has ever been original. Also, the track listings on the package, online, lyrics sheet, and the disc itself differ a little. I’m still wondering if I’m listening to “New Clear Age” or “Nuclear Age.”

Anyway, this is pretty good overall. Uhh…up the punx.

I also used to see Misery with Al singing and it was better then, IMHO. I really dont like their new stuff as much. Its too harsh for my taste

will isn't intolerant. he's just being open minded to things that are worthy of his approval under his guidelines of what's considered "true art."

and please tell me about this crust or crusty movement. i'm tired of ska and am looking for something new.

    Posted by feeeding5000 on 2005-11-15 19:21:34

Uhhh.. actually, I'm gonna go against Will on this. I like ska. I like a lot of pop-punk, and I like Elvis Costello-type stuff. The whole point of being a liberal or an anarchist or whatever is to have an open mind, and to be tolerant, if not accepting. Intolerance is what got humanity "here" in the first place, so let's just stop being music snobs until someone says they like crust and the Black Eyed Peas. Oh, and the third "e" in "feeeding5000" was originally a typo, but I left it in after using it on a couple MBs. (Its a Crass reference)

    When did I say that?

I don't care if music is melodic- as long as it retains a place in the category of "art."

Will is making the assumption that a little pop influences in music is automatically bad. I fail to see what is so bad about it.
What exactly wrong with punk or ska with a certain limited amount of pop in the music?

I listen to music that is pleasant to my ears and that I genuinely enjoy when I play it. If that means listening to a few pop-punk bands here and there like NOFX or MxPx or the Descendents, then so be it. I absolutely love their music and enjoy it significantly more than bands such as this one.
I don't see how that makes me any less of a fan of good music than you.

How come you review this, but not Skarp's Requiem. That LP is a fucking MONSTER.

    abstract paintings arent art?

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 14, 2005 at 5:31 PM (EST)

So anything that's no instantly palatable isn't "music." This is like saying abstract paintings are merely "art."

Don't worry, it is just flaming.

Although i do think that crust is just noise, at least to my ears. They can stand for whatever they want, but man, that "music" sucks so bad.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 14, 2005 at 5:21 PM (EST)

Crooked Superhero, listen to yourself for a moment....

I'm sure your flame baiting anyways, but everybody is entitled to listen to what they want and they are also entitled to air their opinion against, be that right or wrong.

Posted by Crookedsuperhero on 2005-11-14 17:20:02

It's NOISE. No-one enjoys, but they sure like pretending they do.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 14, 2005 at 5:18 PM (EST)

That's bullshit... Are you kidding me?

Only the most bonafide bullshit elitists would try to dictate what music is or isn't. I know "elitist" is an over-used term, but that's the very fucking definition of it.

Music isn't restricted to pleasently organized Western sounds- it's everything around us. If you can't wrap your narrow mind around that, you just don't have a concept of art.

Therefor, you would demean a subculture based on making genuine art in favor of a pop trend based on perpetuating bubblegum culture... How typically British.

    My Score:

Yeah well your ears don't have ideals you stick too like the Crusties do.

    The elitist with ears.

    Look's who's the elitist now.

Posted by Crookedsuperhero on 2005-11-14 17:06:20

    It's not even music....

    My Score:

crust is the best type of music ever period.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 14, 2005 at 4:52 PM (EST)

Sonny Bono had some catchy hits, too.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 14, 2005 at 4:25 PM (EST)

it sounds good. hence i listen to it. thats not a crime will, nor does sounding good mean it is bad

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 14, 2005 at 4:12 PM (EST)

Meh, I really can't be bothered to argue with you mall punks and ska kids any longer. If you want to ride out the pop trend, fine.

Don't pretend it means anything more than elevator music, though.

i think the fact that crust has a lame ideology is a score against it, not for it

    My Score:

It gets cold in my squat during the winter and the gutterXpunx don't clean up after themselves.

No you dumbshit, Buddhism is an example of lifestyle/ideology behind it. Shitty music with some super-cool left-wing ideals is still shitty music. Crusties...jesus christ. This is too lame.

I totally lost my punx card on this one. Fuck.

Posted by gladimnotemo on 2005-11-14 13:54:38

You guys are assholes. While he expressed an opinion on the music, I think the more important statement Will was making was that crust has a lifestyle / ideology behind it. You can't say that about ska, especially third wave. While opinion on the music is up to the listener, at least crusties stand behind what they preach (for the most part - every movement has idiots).

People give Will a lot of shit, but the fact is in my opinion he has the best taste in music on this site, he also talks a lot of sense, and after all everything on this site is a opinion, just like this is.
I also agree with the sentiment that the UK is full of crappy 3rd wave ska bands that i can't stand!!, it's also full of nu wave screamo (you'll find no Orchid types here..) and metalcore, but there are some exceptions, such as the Flat Earth label (home to boxed in! ) which has some classic uk hardcore on it. Also Dead and Gone has some good bands too.
There's other good labels too, but well i can't be bothered to go into anymore detail.......oh yeah listen to Misery.

Oh well that's my two cents,i don't care.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 14, 2005 at 12:53 PM (EST)

what does this album actually mean, will?

Posted by SilentStorms on 2005-11-14 12:07:14

Sorry about my memory, Will said "old dudes", not old people - but it's still upsets me to the same extent.

Posted by SilentStorms on 2005-11-14 12:06:00

Definately Will, settle down. And referring to old people making fun of ska music is downright pathetic. Muhahaha.

Posted by burningfeeetman on 2005-11-14 11:08:28

    WIll, you suck.

Posted by sickboi on 2005-11-14 10:18:31

Man, I really, really wish crust and grind would get super-duper popular so Will could find something new to bitch about.

Seriously dude, you are about as open-minded as a Black Panther at a Klan rally.

Posted by Crookedsuperhero on 2005-11-14 08:11:09

    So, in conclusion:

Music that sounds good is bad. Music that sounds like meaningless, boring noise is amazing.

Posted by iheartadam on 2005-11-14 03:17:04

Will is the crustiest spirit of '02 punk around.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 14, 2005 at 1:45 AM (EST)

True. I can't imagine listening to Larm because they're cool... It's something you have to personally find in the music.

Third wave ska for me is just devoid of any realy meaning. It seems like a dead, crappy pop trend that some people are riding out until the end. Is there a white ska lifestyle? What does it mean, what is its depth?

It's pleasing to the ears, I guess, but if that's the case, so are Disney movie soundtracks and Bad Company records. It's catchy, but it's also really boring. Pop punk with upstrokes! Yeah! I gurantee you more work goes into making an epic crust masterpiece like this album (which none of you British ska dudes will ever even give a try) than a cookie cutter ska band putting out their third album with their fifth singer because the band itself shares no personal connection.

It's weird, third wave ska is something even old dudes make fun of. To people who actually listen to the Skatalites and Desmond Dekker, Mustard Plug are like Blink 182. Like pop punk and fake indie rock, third wave ska can be found in an abundance of crappy TV shows and movies as segway music.

So if you dudes want to be all righteous about your crappy pop rock, I guess that's okay, but don't get irate with music that actually means something. That's all.

This is neither inaccesible or bad music. That is a bias. Its all a matter of perspective and subjectivity and all that jazz.

You cant try to say that ANY genre of music is better than any other and actually expect it to be a fact simply because all art is opinion. So your argument for crust sucking and ska rocking is both wrong and true and completely moronic all at once.

Crust is a good time and I love me all the waves of Ska. No use getting all bent out of shape about it. Punk comes in many different genres and flavors and no ones gonna like em all.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 13, 2005 at 10:40 PM (EST)

the argument for "ska" over "crust" is that ska actually sounds pleasent to the ears..

just because a type of music is popular and more accessable doesnt mean its bad no matter how cool you want to look.

when will people learn that unnaccessable and bad music just for the sake of being just that is not a good thing

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 13, 2005 at 10:31 PM (EST)

Good music is getting attacked by two fans of third wave ska.

Why do you keep talking about ska Will?

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 13, 2005 at 7:32 PM (EST)

The incredible shittiness of a genre?

Crust is just the natural extension of punk/hardcore/metal combo.

"Ska" is the commercial, pop version of Jamaican music. There's really no argument for it.

Oh, and of course the incredible shittiness of this entire genre.

    My Score:

Man, Misery and RP are the top of the charts. Amazing. That being said, I've never really heard much of this band. My friend tried to sell me "The Early Years" once, but I figured it was a bad idea.

    Nausea rules, though.

Jesus christ what a stupid review.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 13, 2005 at 3:07 AM (EST)

Used to go see them with their original singer Al who went on to sing for Nausea. Misery were great then! They were more influenced by bands like Conflict and Flux of the Ink Indians, never cared for them much in the later years though.

    Will,

I'm the complete opposite with Crust/Doom shit, I can't stand it live, part of it has to do with the crowd, part of it has to do with the fact that it's boring as hell live.

Yeah, if you think the only good music ever made was crappy whiteboy ska.

I take it crust is synonymous with shit now?

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 13, 2005 at 1:57 AM (EST)

Misery is good doom crust, but like all doom metal/crust stuff, it DOES NOT LEND ITSELF TO RECORD. These bands are almost purely live bands... It just gets boring sitting and listening to them, but if you're in the groove at a show, they can be some of the most memorable experiences to have.
