A Dozen Furies' claim to fame is winning the reality show, "Battle for Ozzfest," which seems to be their main advertising point (like Manntis’s ads as well). A Concept from Fire is the followup to their self-released debut, Rip the Stars Down. Unlike their debut, A Concept from Fire is a metalcore CD, as their previous outing was a mix of post-hardcore and screamocore.

A Concept is way above anything else produced by the other bands featured on the show, though the disc’s standout track is “Into Another Life,” which sounds like nothing else on the album. It is driven by a technical, melodic death metal solo at the beginning and end performed by D. Braxton Henry.

The rest of the album is your typical metalcore release, with a few songs being heavier ("Nightmare of a Martyr") and some songs being sung for the most part ("Lost in a Fantasy"). A Dozen Furies make up for the predictability on tracks like “Awake and Lifeless” and “An Idea and Some Rope,” when the choruses are slightly catchy and the guitar work is above the standard metalcore same old, same old. But on tracks like “138,” they seem to be going through the motions. The good thing is that they manage to stay above the generic side of the genre, but they still can’t create their own sound, which hinders the disc slightly. The design of the album is excellent with a really nice picture and a solid color scheme, though I wish they had added the lyrics in the CD booklet.

In the end, A Concept from Fire is a solid metalcore album with a lot of potential. If A Dozen Furies runs with what they got, they should be able to launch themselves into the higher echelon of metalcore. A solid full-length that has me interested in their future releases.

    this cd really surprised me
i thought this was going to be like every other band but i was wrong.this album has the best sonic sounding guitars that i love and they were good live at ozzfest but i can understand why ppl might not like them but 2 me they are really good

I get sick of people making stupid random names when they dont truly even give a **** about this style of music.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at 7:14 AM (EST)

I get so fucking sick of people pigeon-holing or trying to box a band into a certain label, it annoys me, so i invent my own genres of music. I would call A Dozen Furies "Corrogated Iron Roof-Core".

Naievete (did I spell that right?) is only funny for so long...then it gets annoying.

    My Score:

    "Metalcore is the new nu-metal.
    Tech-Metal is the new metalcore.
Youth Crew is the new Screamo.
Screamo is the new pop punk."

    Wow, this is so true....

    Texas Is The Reason

Texas is the Reason is actually 'real' emo, not the fake MTV2 shit.

    Posted by Russe11 on 2006-01-19 23:19:52

I agree with Wil for the most partl, but post-hardcore is a very vague genre; screamo is basically saying something is post-hardcore, but with an emphasis on the dynamic shouted/sung/screamed vocal style and diverse instrumentation that usually features chaos and melody intertwined.

    Posted by Russe11 on 2006-01-19 23:14:57

If you want some good post-hardcore, I would reccomend Quicksand, Mineral, Fugazi, Texas Is The Reason, and Embrace. On the more mainstream side of things, pick up Glassjaw's "Worship & Tribute."

Posted by GreenVandal on 2006-01-19 23:07:02

Yeah. I saw them open for The Blood Brothers and I thought it would really really suck because of their name, but they surprised the shit out of me.

And Will, you are absolutely correct and I have been trying to get people to listen to that rationality forever. Screamo or whatever the fuck you want to call it is just Post-Hardcore with a bit more spazz and speed to it. Well, what everone calls the REAL screamo is anyway. This new shit is just pop punk and pop rock with incredibly out of place screaming.

The singer in Orange 9mm definetly has a bit of the nu-metal vocals going on. Its not quite rap singing but its getting close and I juust dont find it very interesting.

    Posted by Big_Guy on 2006-01-19 18:52:57

If I never listened to mewithoutyou I would say they were a shitty nu-emo/pop band like Mae or something.

It must be the name or something

    thank god they aren't though

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, January 19, 2006 at 5:21 PM (EST)

Orange 9mm was never on Roadrunner records. I would never call them rap metal either. You aren't very bright.

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-01-19 15:50:17

Ill take this any day over any emo, fake screamo, or pop punk band.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, January 19, 2006 at 3:27 PM (EST)

    Dude, Screamo is post-hardcore.

Orchid, Envy, blah blah blah... That's just post-hardcore. This nu-screamo stuff just sounds like hair metal to me.

Posted by rkl on 2006-01-19 00:37:46

interesting that you cmpared 9mm to quicksand as they both played on the first warped.
from what i remember of orange 9mm, they were like rapmetal. i know they were on roadrunner around the time machinehead decided that killing their careers with a rapmetal album would be a fine idea.

Posted by GreenVandal on 2006-01-18 19:24:56

Thanx for the link. I checked it out and that is most definetly post-hardcore in the Quicksand category. I didnt like it very much though...musically it was pretty generic and the singer sounds like he wishes he was in Sevendust.

Check out mewithoutyou. They are the rock. http://www.purevolume.com/mewithoutyou/
The best song on there is probably Bullet to Binary.
The Fugazi song "Bed for the Scraping" should also be found and heard. Or anything by Fugazi really. They take a couple listens to sink in but are absolutely amazing.

Post hardcore is my fav genre so sorry if my boner is showing.

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-01-18 18:45:56

note: thats a link to some orange 9mm

Posted by GreenVandal on 2006-01-18 18:36:44
    My Score:

I dont know what Orange 9mm is but from the way you say that it doesnt seem like a genre you a familiar enough with to be name dropping.

Some post hardcore bands that you should familiarize yourself with are Fugazi, Quicksand, The Rites of Spring (no they arent fucking scremo!) Hoover, The Crownhate Ruin, mewithoutyou, Drive Like Jehu...and Dischord records has lots more if you feel like looking. The Deftones are also very post hardcore-ish (seeing as how they have a quicksand influence) and so do Snapcase.

I have never heard this band, but from your descriptions they dont sound like a post hardcore band at all.

"Metalcore is basically shitty nu-metal. No other way to describe it... It takes on all the characteristics.
In real life, these dudes would be hacked to pieces and fed to a pack of wolves at a metal show."

Metal Dave calls this shit "Sweater Metal". Metal Dave is fucking right.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at 6:29 PM (EST)

Wait, I thought this was alt-screamo, post-punk, non-melodic metallic hardcore. Or is it post-prog lo-fi melodic indie screamo? Its funny when people give me shit for liking bands that have the '82 hardcore sound. At least i can describe my favorite bands without having to take a breath mid-sentence.

Do you even know what post hardcore is? Name some post hardcore bands. I'm interested

I've heard some Orange 9mm labeled as post hardcore. Dont know if ti sticks, but either way, their quite good.

In a bar in Toledo across from the depot on a
bar stool she took off her ring
I thought i'd get closer so I walked on over I
sat down and asked her name
When the drinks finally hit her she said I'm no
quitter but I finally quit livin on dreams
I'm hungry for laughter and here ever after I'm
after what-ever the other life brings

In the mirror I saw him and I closely watched him I
thought how he looked out of place
He came to the woman who sat there be-side me he
had a strange look on his face
The big hands were calloused he looked like a
mountain for a minute I thought I was dead
But he started shaking his big heart was
breaking he turned to the woman and said

You picked a fine time to leave me Lu-cille
with four hungry children and a crop in the field
I've had some bad times lived through some sad times but
this time your hurting won't heal
you picked a fine time to leave me Lu-cille.

    My Score:

Toledo, listen to what I am about to say.

All the genres you just name dropped are not actual genres of music. They are stupid little labels designed by the mainstream press to categorize the newest teen fad. Screamocore? Are you listening to yourself? I thought that the "scream" part was supposed to be the part that told you someone pissed in the emo punch bowl but apparently these guys took a dump in it and now it has a extra core on the end. Wicked.

Metalcore bands are just metal bands that are not tough enough to hang with the metal kids so they lure in the emo girls with their tight pants and mind numbing lyrics and wala, you got the screaming backstreet boys. Screamo is pop punk with screaming or hardcore with horrid singing (same deal either way really) and then you name drop post fucking hardcore?

Do you even know what post hardcore is? Name some post hardcore bands. I'm interested. And no I will not accept Fugazi because thats just too damn obvious.

    Posted by the_other_scott on 2006-01-17 19:12:13

    "what exactly is metalcore?
ive asked this question 500x, and have yet to get an answer. it seems to be more about fashion choices than musical styles."

i would describe it as a mix between shitty hardcore and nu-metal

its generally played by bands who started out as mall punk, then became screamo, then learned out to play cheesy metal riffs

most bands with overly dramatic names or names dealing with dying, death, blood etc. would fall into the metalcore subgenre (murder by death, death cab for cutie withstanding)

then again i only like about 4 metal bands (sabbath, g n r, early van halen, early ac/dc) so what the fuck do i know?

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 5:57 PM (EST)

I think there's the Turbo AC's, but in the movie, it's the Turnbull AC's (at least I thought).

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 5:55 PM (EST)

    Not at all.

Not to be sexist, but to be that popular, the genre has to appeal to mainstreamish, society-molded girls... While that's completely feasible with "fashioncore" or whatever, a bunch of sweaty jocks jumping all over each other to sing about "staying true" to a scene of likeminded melonheads will never appeal to a mass amount of girls the way "Bullets In my Valentine Heart Candy" did.

Baseball Furies is already a band name. So's The Riffs. So's the Warriors.

I take bids on the Lizzies, though!

    -Will

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 3:07 PM (EST)

This band should change thier name to Baseball Furies, and then fight The Warriors with baseball bats. Just a thought.

i get it, they're metalcore, find new words.
saw them live, the music would of been better if they had concentrated more on playing it than doing coordinated stage moves... manntis was good, but cynder, the runner, was like a bad version of creed if that is possible.

Posted by rkl on 2006-01-17 14:23:16

    *now*

    So anyways...

    A Dozen Furies or Manntis?

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-01-17 12:58:11

If you heard there self released cd,w hich is only 5 tracks, it's obvious they at times are screamocore and at times post hardcore. 'Rip the Stars Down,' isn't even close enough to be metalcore.

'Falling Down,' which is on 'Rip the Stars Down,' has an guitar riff at the beginning that rips off a Finch song off 'What It is to Burn.'

And ADF is simply metalcore know.

Go to a metal site and tell them ADF is metal, they'll simply laugh and/or flame you.

    My Score:

    screamocore? posthardcore? metalcore?

its just a fucking metal band. score is for over use of the suffix "core."

    LISTENS*

    damn I'm stupid.

    Posted by Big_Guy on 2006-01-17 11:51:00

I definitely feel this band earned the win on that show..... mostly because the other bands weren't that good (besides manntis)

though, in the end, this band is really bland and kinda boring.

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-01-17 11:22:53

After a few more lessons, the drums are sounding really good on this release.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 12:12 AM (EST)

i saw them playing on that ozzfest reality show. it was so unbearable.

synchronized stage moves > good song writing
