Published on January 17th 2006

I had to look no further than the very cover of this album to know that I wasn’t going to like it. The sticker on the cover reads “For fans of My Chemical Romance, From First to Last, Bleeding Through, and Senses Fail.” Ouch; that’s game, set, match right there. After reading that, I didn’t even want to pop this into my CD drive. Epitaph is really barking up the wrong tree signing bands like this; leave that crap to someone else.

Combining the absolute worst parts of “mall screamo” that bands like Senses Fail have popularized, and self-loathing gothic imagery, every track here is more or less a mirror image of the last. The vapid, thoughtless lyrics tackle such topics as depression, angst, depression, loss, and vampires. Well, at least they didn’t recycle any concepts that have been used before by every single other band playing this exact same style; that’d have been an unfortunate creative decision. If I was to count the number of times the words 'angel,' 'wings,' 'love,' 'hate,' or 'broken' appear within the liner notes, I’d surely have a full day’s work ahead of me. It’s really just funny at this point that these sort of bands are so devoid of individuality that even their own lyrics are completely interchangeable between songs. Lines from “Eulogies and Epitaphs” and “Kiss Me Like You Wanted” could be randomized and switched, and nobody would be the wiser. But even with a band such as this, there’s more to the music than poorly conceived lyrics.

I think the best assessment I could possibly give this band is to take My Chemical Romance, throw in some of Senses Fail’s erratic screaming, and the occasional metal riffing, and this will be your result. A lot of the vocal melodies seem to be styled around what MCR has become so well known for, just a lot of drawn out theatrics that could make a 5-word sentence into half of the song. There’s some female vocals as well for contrast purposes, but whenever they’re used they essentially get drowned out by either the main vocals or some unnecessary background screaming,.

Every song follows more or less the same formula. It either starts out with some dissonant riffing and screaming, moving quickly into more melodic territory, or it starts in that slow melodic territory and eventually builds up for the screaming at the end of the track. There’s exceptions, but that general rule holds true in almost every instance I’ve found. Take the title track, “We Were Always Searching,” where things begin with some Darkest Hour like-riffing, before some odd keyboard parts and the slowdown to an almost whispered singing delivery. The vocals slowly but surely get louder while the clean guitars work on their own underneath, barely even heard below the singer's falsetto. There’s about 20 seconds directly in the middle of the song where I Am Ghost goes into hardcore freakout mode, only to have things return to the stale redundancy that has been building all album long. Even when the singer, who’s seemingly plenty capable, hits some great vocal melodies, it’s buried so far into the ground with repetition that the talent doesn’t even matter any more, as long as the song is over.

Beneath all the gloss and polish, there’s little to no redeeming value. They don’t stand out in the slightest, not even among their boring retread peers. Ah well, another one bites the dust.

A 40 minute demo? Pssh, this isn't even an EP, it's a freakin' full length, actual album, etc. Not an Ep, not a demo.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, June 23, 2006 at 5:50 AM (EDT)

For a demo this is fucking good. i like this band.

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-06-12 23:08:52

This release has 9 tracks. 9 tracks is quite a lot for a demo unless your gonna shop it around the labels. Night Like These did it, but they then re-recorded the 9 songs and had 2 new songs for a full length.

So in the end, I have the right to hate the production. This is pretty much a full length. 9 tracks isn't an EP for the most part (coughatreyucough). So either way, if you wanna go 'it was a demo,' then you'd have to admit that Epitaph was too cheap to give it the full treatment, but then again, they knew scenesters could care less and would eat this cookie cutter shit up.

And guess what, they were right. Bretts a fucking genius. And so is everyone at the label.

    My Score:

To the douche bad below, this We Are Always Searching EP was the bands DEMO biiiiatch. They recorded it after being a band for like two months. Epitaph signed them and just re-released this cd and called it an ep. It may not be the greatist sounding recording but thats because they did it themselves.

    My Score:

'Pretty People Never Lie, Vampires Never Die' perfectly sums up this album. At times it's kind of boring, at time's it interesting, and at times it freaks out.

The 'freak out' portion of the song mentioned above could have been purely killer, but the production here is down right horrible.

I mean, come on? The listener should be able to pick out the difference between shouting, guitar solo, strings, bass, drums...It shouldnt all sound like one noise.

So yea, score is for crappy producing.

Go to google and type in a line from the beginning of Lady Madeline. Put it all in quotes. See what you find.

Yes, the original author knows, and he knows that he was not credited on the album. So now you know why you can't listen to it on myspace.

There is nothing punk about outright plagiarism.

Well, i think the people that hate them are just jelous because they were signed after like their 2nd show or something. But, if you just listen to music for the music, then i think this cd is rad. I stole it and burned a few copies. he he he

Shit, i am gonna see them at HOB with Silverstien in two week. ill tell you if they suck live or not

reviewers who dont play music should not talk about "melodies" and "falsetto" when they don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

From what i've heard thus far, this shit is pretty tired and crappy. Like Anchors said, try something new for a change. If I have to hear one more lyric about cutting or suffocating, or drowning, or dying in general.....Jesus H. Christ people! This is really starting to remind me of the "pop punk days" back in 99-00 when everybody wanted to sing shitty songs about their girlfriends to a blink 182 rip off riff. I'm over this shit, but I'll never be over Epitaph. I HAVE FAITH!

Ha ha ha. Its a fucking review. They sell out all their shows. They are touring, they are making music. I Am Ghost gets the last laugh on all us fucks. So, whatever.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 6:41 PM (EST)

no, i meant it more like cause i am a lazy ass and in a few years when they are out touring and making money, i am going to be sitting here talking shit on the next band about to be big with shit music. is was complete self depricating, not sucking up to a band that will make it. ...maybe i should listen to them though since i'm so down on myself

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 6:31 PM (EST)

"i dont really want to talk shit on them because i know if epitaph gets them on tour with mcr and possibly afi (although i think afi fans might see through this bands image into the nothingness) i think this band can become popular and make money."

Oh, so you're afraid of making fun of a band you don't like because they might get popular and make lots of money. Sycophant for the music industry, I guess.

ok. so i'm back. i skipped the last song on their page. i dont really want to talk shit on them because i know if epitaph gets them on tour with mcr and possibly afi (although i think afi fans might see through this bands image into the nothingness) i think this band can become popular and make money. so uh, good for them i guess?

its streaming on purevolume. i'm going to listen to the whole thing then report back. if i dont make it back in 20 minutes or however long this is, that means i didnt make it out alive and now, i am ghost

    My Score:

Anyone who listened to this cd one time and didn't like it I say listen to it agian. I really didn't like it the first time I heard it, but the second time it sounded much better. They have really complex melodies that don't exactly sound smooth the first time you listen to it, but once you figure out how it blends together it sounds pretty good. Nothing spectacular, but very good.

The reviewer left out the other band that was mentioned on the sticker that said for fans of: AFI. I don't like all the other bands it mentioned but I still like this band.

Actually that werid keys thing you mentioned is actually a violin I think. The one person does have play the violin in the band.

Ive only heard 'We Are Always Searching,' and I like the song.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 5:51 AM (EST)

    Wow. Damn.

You really hated this! Lol...maybe they picked the wrong person to review this cd. I think you are every band's nightmare for a reviewer, one that doesn't even like the music they are playing.

I thought it wasn't that bad, I thought it was very "modern" (a nice way of saying that its a lot like a bunch of bands already out there) and not exactly original, but I felt like it had some signs of future potiential.

I caught them live a few months back and it was impressive. They have a great live show and the kids went nuts for them.

Something about this band makes me feel like they could do great work. I, for one will look forward to the new album. They did do this one on their own, so I think the next one will be more impressive for sure.
