Reviews

Note to the reader:

If you do not know what NOFX sounds like by this point, you are either (A) 15 years old or younger, or (B)living under a rock in Alabama. Close this window, hop in the car, and drive to your nearest record store to pick up either Punk in Drublic or So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes
. After a few listens, return back to read the rest of the review.

For the rest of you, this EP is not likely to change your opinion of the band. If you're a fan of NOFX, you will almost certainly enjoy the six songs featured on the Never Trust a Hippy EP; if you hate the band, that won't suddenly change with this release.

Fans of NOFX's earlier material -- dating as far back as Ribbed and White Trash... -- will be pleased to find out that most of the songs on this EP sound similar to songs recorded during that era. The only difference would be in the lyrics; instead of writing about lesbians and boobs, the majority of the songs are political in nature or are speaking out against religious extremism (although NOFX has always had political songs on all of their albums, so I really don't understand the recent backlash against some of their political lyrics).

The EP starts out with "Seeing Double at the Triple Rock," a fun, midtempo song about the greatness of beer; "I'm a religious drunk, and this is where I pray...we're praying that the taps will keep the holy water flowing." The song reminds me of earlier material mostly due to the lead guitar part that sounds like it came straight from White Trash.

"The Marxist Brothers" is a slow paced, reggae-sounding song with lyrics poking fun of "idealist bourgeoisie" and is, what appears to be, a response to Propagandhi's diss of NOFX on their most recent album. But Propagandhi fans should not take it too seriously -- it's all in good fun, and the mood is similar to that of "Anarchy Camp" from The War on Errorism, so it's light-hearted.

The effort continues with "Golden Boys," a song whose double-time beginning sounds very similar to the classic song "Green Corn" and is played in the signature NOFX style. Next up is the acoustic "You're Wrong," which was also part of the 7 Inch of the Month Club. Nothing special in particular here, although the lyrics are quite bold and funny all at the same time. Ann Coulter is appropriately labeled as a "cunted cunt" and Fat Mike lets you know that you're wrong if you agree with Sean Hannity. NOFX has been playing this song on their latest tour, and according to Fat Mike, it will be on the new album, except it will be a full-band "punked-out" version.

Hippy closes out with "Everything in Moderation (Especially Moderation)" and "I'm Going to Hell for This One." The former is a very basic, fast-paced NOFX song about the band's career and age: "When your band has been a band longer than the Ramones, and critics coin you 'the punk Rolling Stones,' that's when you know this is for life."

"I'm Going to Hell for This One" was also on the 7 Inch of the Month Club, and is about Jesus -- well, the Jesus that NOFX believes in. They take a stab at fundamentalist Christianity and promote the belief that Jesus was a pretty cool guy...just not the person that Christians believe he was. Stylistically, this song reminds me a lot of "The Decline," which is certainly a plus.

Overall, this is a wonderful listen, everything from the hilarious cover art, to the lyrical content, to the classic NOFX sound we all know and love. If the new album Wolves in Wolves' Clothing sounds anything like this, then we are in for a treat.

I was already pissed off about something else when I wrote that, probably why seemed like an incoherent rant. Reading people's I know how to use grammar, I have a college degree. And no I wasn't even referring to Scruffy's review when I was talking about TLA fans, because I never read it. I am just a little tired of all of the NOFX bashing.

NoFX are amazing at their instruments. their talent is one of the most impressive aspects of their sound.
And, in case you're lumping me with those "only went to the show to see Lawrence Arms" fans because I wrote a review that was critical of NoFX and their fans, don't. I wanted to see NoFX. Singing along with "I Heard they Suck Live" is one of the great musical memories of high school for me (along with Life In General, Hang-Ups, Face To Face, Sumo Surprise and Losing Streak, among others). "Punk in Drublic" is still in my list of albums everyone should own. The fact that it was a bad experience and I didn't sugarcoat it doesn't mean I hate NoFX.

Posted by captaincrackhead on 2006-03-20 10:00:42

Almost everyone here is a fucking hypocrit. You just need to realize that if it wasn't for NOFX, alot of you would have never become interested in punk in the first place. Hell, I wonder how many of you fuckers who say NOFX is the shittiest band ever have at least one of their albums playing regularly. I'm not the biggest NOFX fan either, but their shows are more energetic than so many of these newer bands. You refer to them as crap and then say the only reason you go to their show was to see The Lawrence Arms, and you think NOFX is crap?
If you want hear how crap is to be made perfectly, put on "The Stations of the Crass" album. If you want to hear how a band can be successful by making jokes not only about the scene, but themselves, listen to NOFX. Their jokes may be getting stale but look at the past few Vandals albums post-"Live Fast Diarrhea," and then tell me what the meaning of stale really is.
Just so you know, since no one else who dislikes NOFX will put the names of the bands they listen to, which only leads me to assume that there are a bunch of My Chemical Romance and Avenged Sevenfold fans on here which is why they don't name their favorite bands.
MY LIST: Subhumans, Turbo ACs, Crass, Dead Kennedys, Anti-Heros, DKM, Flogging Molly, pre-1996 NOFX, Circle Jerks, Descendents.
I've been listening to punk since the early 80s and have seen people be weened off the NOFX bottle only to spit in the face of their heroes. So fuck everyone.

NOFX isn't great at their instruments, their musical talent isn't superb, but they make godamn good songs, anyone who says that they're no good are obviously wrong, how could a band that sucks be around for this long and have such a large fan base. If you don't like them, don't listen to them.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, March 19, 2006 at 4:57 PM (EST)

What's all this talk about nofx "just recently becoming political for the money"??

they've had a lot of political songs way before the War On Errorism album... the decline came out in 1999.

They used to get nothing but shit for writing songs about boobs and lesbians, but when they put out something political, they're "preachy"?

    My Score:

    This album is mediocre.

The reason NOFX is such crap for their political views now is because their best songs were about boobs and lesbians and they are leaving that behind.

NOFX sucks now because they don't write funny/good songs anymore.

feeding5000 is an idiot, I agree. Saying Nofx got political for the money is moronic. They already have more than enough money, and hate George Bush. I don't hate Bush for the money, so why the hell would you think they do? I could go on, but you aren't worth speaking to. Come back in 5 years.

Comparing NOFX to Crass and bands like that, is like comparing them to Napalm Death. It's not the same kind of music. I don't personally like their music, they do pop-punk well, and they'll probably keep doing it. Will I care? No. Will their fans care? Yes, and they'll keep listening to it. No amount of "OMG NOFX SUCKKSSS!!!11" is going to change that. So, overall, good pop-punk, if you like pop-punk.

"Rock Against Bush: It's Not Not Shortsighted!" Oh, and NOFX were only good for one thing. I've only been into punk for about 3 years, and I got War on Errorism when it first came out. I've since gotten albums from almost all of the bands they name check on that CD. Not surprisingly, all of those albums are waaaay beyond NOFX. I can't believe that a band so poppy, politically bland, and normal could be influenced by Rudimentary Peni. Oh, and the way I see it, NOFX isn't being political because they actually care a great deal (like Propaghandi & anarcho/crust bands), but because it's cool. Why do you think Green Day suddenly released a "political" album after years of singing about masturbation, love, and teenage angst? Not because they've grown up; because they needed to make a comeback, and knew appealing to all the kids who blindly vote for the Democrats ("because their mommy does it") would make them MORE MONEY. When there's a big market of left-leaning centrist teens who can't get their heads beyond "Bush sucks!", there's gotta be someone to cash in on it. NOFX saw their opportunity, and took it. When you have a choice between making money and playing basement shows three nights a week and eating vegan frozen meals from a dumpster as you squat in an unheated, asbestos-filled apartment, putting on a "Buck Fush" t-shirt at the nearest Warped Tour stage sounds pretty appealing.

anybody with ears would never mistake nofx for fugazi or sonic youth. i understand the simplicity of punk rock is the appeal (funny how nofx gets a free pass for more or less writing the same songs for 20 years and other bands will get shit on for doing the same). i just don't see the brilliance and blind allegiance to this band as some have commented. but whatever, i listen to generic shit too, so if this is what gets you off, then carry on.

I figure no matter what NOFX does people are going to bitch about something... But that goes for just about every band out there.

My thoughts on this EP: I got it on Friday and I just have an "ok" feeling about it. I enjoy every song on this but overall I just think it's disposable and not worth comparing to The Longest Line because two of the 6 songs are going to be on the new album anyways so the other 4 songs just go by so fast that you kind of feel puzzled at how quickly it ends. I’m sure I’d be totally disappointed though if I would have done that 7” of the month club deal when it was available.

"I don't think Mike sees himself as any kind of expert on "issues". He has an opinion, and a good medium to voice it. I think he also realizes that there are a lot of young kids out there alienated by the pretentious nature of a lot of the "informed" bands, and their legions of nose-turning fanboys.

It used to be that NOFX got shit because they were "juvenile" and only sang about lesbians and drinking. So, Mike gets interested in issues, and makes a record about them. Suddenly he's too "preachy".

    very well put!

why isn't this on vinyl? i'll never buy an ep on a cd (even if it is NOFX). It'll just get lost in my vast collection of full lengths (and with cds, there is no way to tell by glancing at your collection which is an ep and which is a cd) 7inches are sweet and fat mike knows this. I'm guessing Fat will eventually release it on vinyl.

and for the idiot saying he'd rather listen to his teacher than fat mike, you are truly a fucking moron. Frontmen aren't supposed to be vastly informed about all the topics they sing about. Their job is to rock. If they get you to think or research topics further (like NOFX does), then they are great. Not everyone can be a Jello Biafra.

and for the fucknuts saying NOFX is 'uninspired and juvenile', shut the fuck up. I'd like to see your shitty band write an 18 minute punk song adressing almost all the issues adressed in punk rock and make it interesting and fun to listen to repeated times. And then play that entire song on every stop of a tour. And even if you do that, NOFX still did it first. So fuck off.

Its good to see most people giving this band the respect they deserve. its also good to know that so many people like this music (for a little while i was starting to think all the punkers were lookng for artsy and new wave bands to listen to. Score is for the ep (i downloaded it but i own every nofx full length so fuck off. and, if they release it on vinyl i will buy it in an instant (as soon as i get paid)).

I love this band and have for well over a decade. That said, the lyrics to "You're Wrong" are some of the least clever and most intellectually lazy they have come up with. Normally, I'm pretty impressed with these guys and this EP is no exception. I think it's a solid, very good record. But the "You're Wrong" lyrics are really stupid.

From this point on anyone who wants to write off NOFX especially those who post anon should consider posting what music they listen to first. My money is on the fact that these are the same people who post this is *PUNK news*. NOFX are the definitive skate punk rock band, they arent trying to be velvet underground, fugazi or any of the other greats who are infintly more punk/importnat/talented or the newer art-etc bands hella, lightening bolt. Take things on their own merit.
Secondly Propagandhi are no better than NOFX in my opinion musically they have done/achieved less therefore the message is diluted to the point where no one gives a fuck what they have to say. No matter what childish arguments they get into with their peers.

    My Score:

I never understood how people could call NOFX things like "juvenile and uninspired" when they are undeniably very important and one of the most influential bands in the history of punk rock. For the record, I'm 18 and have been an absolutely huge fan of this band since I was I guess around 14. I don't see it changing anytime soon. I think that some people just don't get that it's not just juvenile profane humor, it's actually quite brillant musical satire in a world where most bands are dull, sound the same, and aren't saying anything.

My score is for the EP. Good stuff. I didn't care much for the War on Errorism but this seems to appeal to me more.

"Can someone exclain the alleged fued between NOFX and Propaghani though? I don't listen to enough propaghandi to be clued into the other side of this supposed beef."

i dont really think there is much of a fued, per se. i mean, in the prop song "rock for sustainable capitalism" chris points out some issues about how a lot of bands claiming to be progressive and "green" are just outright compromising with corporations cashing in on being "radical" and "anarchist." at the same time, chris states that propagandhi themselves are of course not exempt from compromise but, ahh this is hard to explain. you should read the propagandhi interview on this website. when the question comes up about the song "rock for sustainable capitalism" that will explain a lot.

    also,
about nofx's reference to "today's empires" on this ep on the song "the marxist brothers", i dont think its like nofx is trying to get back at propagandhi or anything. it seems to me that fat mike is just expressing that its really hard to escape this capitalist consumer economy that we are all intertwined in. i think thats what that song is kind of about. i think its also about people's intentions to make positive changes in the world as just ending up falling back and giving into our consumer first world culture. i dunno. i could be way off. thats part of what i got from that song. sorry for such a long post fellow punknewsers.

p.s. i really like this ep.
