The Sainte CatherinesDancing for Decadence (2006)Fat Wreck Chords Reviewer Rating: User Rating: Contributed by: Adam (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on April 4th 2006
Before they wanted it to burn the Sainte Catherines played Guelph, Ontario on a Halloween with Against Me! and Fifth Hour Hero. It was an interesting bill because while the band certainly held their own they lacked that charisma of Fifth Hour Hero and the cult of personality surrounding the headliners. The band said little (or at least left that impression) but they dutifully bowled through a number of propulsive little punk rock songs that, while not-instantly memorable on their own, combined for a great set. That's how the Sainte Catherines have always seemed to me, like the building with a strong foundation but lacking the little frills and embellishments that make it stand out.

yesssssss and to answer below me, yes Tom Gabel sings on "The Shape of Drunks To Come" I never understood the deal with all of the hate towards Fat on this site, it's not like they're pulling the same shit their big brothers at Epitaph are with signing bands. This album is really good but there have been so many more awesome albums coming out this year. This one is still probably in my top 15 of the year though. I agree whole heartedly with scruffy, in saying that, I'm personally really into Fat right now simply because they are putting out alot of good albums right now. The new Lawrence Arms album was great, Loved ones was eh, Against me! was truly bad, I really don't listen to NOFX anymore these day, but my brother was listeningto it in his car and it seems alright, at lease better than their last release, but noone seems to mention the new None More Black album. This is Satire is probably my fav. album to come out this year, now I realise there are die hard Kid Dynamite fans out there who this NMB is too poppy or what ever you would call that. I just think they deserve some respect because it's an amazine album. this is an absolutely amazing record. i can't believe i waited this long to pick it up. that brawl in guelph was the shit! huge bouncers vs skinny un healthy punk rawk dudes, all over a stupid argument about whos better, white zombie or outkast !!! funny, dangerous and fun Personally, I like Fat simply because the percentage of good bands on the label is much higher than others. The bands affect my love for the label, not vice versa. fuck the last comment, man you don't know them and you think that everything in the 80's was better anyway. Fuck you man, 80's are over and the Sainte-Catherine rules. "to those who shrug it off, i'm sure fall out boy needs they're dicks sucked a little harder, so get on your knees and prepare." I think it's more the case that people find out a band is on Fat, they decide they are good, no matter what. is it just me or people don't even care what bands are on fat, they assume they're bad? still probably one of the best, if not THE best records to be released this year. i've said it many times before, the sainte catherines are one of the only bands that still generally matter, because we are plagued with bands who generally have their focus set on things other then music (eyeliner, they're pants, sun glasses maybe) and i think these are genunine people. i got to share a few drinks with them last year in sault sainte marie, and learned that they're a fucking amazing group of guys. maybe that has an influence on my decision, but regardless, this band has always put out incredible music, that is truely honest, provocative, energetic and up-lifting. to those who shrug it off, i'm sure fall out boy needs they're dicks sucked a little harder, so get on your knees and prepare. Hey adam that dudes comment way earlier about your referencing Hot Water Music was because you typed 'How Water Music'. Hot not How. are you nuts? this record is everything but boring, for fuck sakes its way better then anything they have done before. I am going to give a reality check score right now. This band produced the most boring record I have heard in a long time. I had high hopes for this too. So watered down, so polished, this band doesn't have a chance to make a career out of this. Pass. solid record, a lot petter then the art of arrogance, which only had 4 good songs. One of there songs sound like no direction by BR right now, there are very few bands who can touch the sainte catherines live show, this band has so much heart, it's amazing to see them live. its like a big group hug with tons of pile ons and sing alongs "i've been friends with these dirty punks for a while, toured with them, stole food and beer with them and slept in unheated vans with them in the middle of winnipeg winters. These guys deserve to be where they are and if you think otherwise then you get off your ass and give up everything in your life to do something you love as much as they love playing music. i've been friends with these dirty punks for a while, toured with them, stole food and beer with them and slept in unheated vans with them in the middle of winnipeg winters. These guys deserve to be where they are and if you think otherwise then you get off your ass and give up everything in your life to do something you love as much as they love playing music. I like this record so much, if you are into this band check out yersterday's ring, it has the same members doin' country and western, it is pretty good if you are into that This is a great album. Hahaha, okay I see what you mean now. Nit pick nit pick nit pick... "Most of the song titles have little to do with the song lyrics. This is why I mentioned the D4 influence." along with western addiction, the sainte catherines are by far one of my favourite release on fat this past year. This band has 3 guitarists. Is that necessary for this type of music? Isn't this band French Canadian? It might explain why they don't interact too well with the audience... Not saying anything about the French, but if their first language isn't English there could be problems. "the song title burn Guelph burn has NOTHING TO DO with burning down the city of guelph....Read the lyrics "I'm thinking this works the same way as when I show my sister anything and she says it sounds like "all that other stuff you listen to." Whether it be The Constantines or AAA, it all sounds the same. Thats how Fat Works for me. All the bands you guys just namedropped (except for AM! of course) are bands I dont like. They all sound the same to me. Maybe its because I never liked Jawbreaker or NOFX or Bad Religion or Hot Water Music and all these bands seem to take inspiration from them. Everybody's namedropping FAT bands to try and show how they're going in a different direction from the '90's, but your forgetting the Western Addiction full length. I think that is one of the better Fat releases in a while, and most diffrent from any band they've put out. the song title burn Guelph burn has NOTHING TO DO with burning down the city of guelph....Read the lyrics MORE DOTS!! I'm a scenester because I think that every FaTwReChOrD sounds like watered down sugar coated pop shit with slick identical sounding production. Forget this albums tracks running together, the whole lables catalogue runs together. " Solid band, solid album. Songs run together a bit but its the kind of album that you realize the band behind it probably delivers an amazing show. I bet if I saw them live I would love this even more. "Awesome. Forget this albums tracks running together, the whole lables catalogue runs together. The only CD in recent memory I can remember liking from Fat is Against Me!'s "As the Eternal Cowboy". I remember I was going to go to that show but was pissed because NMB wasn't playing so we went to a strip club for halloween instead. "You can blame me for that one. Adam and Aubin always seem to use no commas whatsoever so I put some in to give the sentences some breaths." This is pretty good, maybe a bit too forgettable. I got this record in the mail not too long ago, and I love it, really looking forward to seeing them live. Personnaly, I think that this record is excellent! "1) you reviewed the band not the cd 2)how water music?" listened to it today...mediocre...not bad but on the other hand not very good And by the way GreenVandal....the term "Epifat" is so mid-90's.... GreenVandal - The Art of Arrogance was so much better than this. That album was was so dense and dirty and.....well, punk rock. This sounds like every other epifat band. A waste. This album has been on heavier rotation ever since I got it. Definately will be one of my top albums for 2006 This is the first material I'd heard of this band and they're really good. Will, as far as I know they are bilingual, Montreal is a very bilingual city. I'm seeing them with No Trigger on Saturday. At first I was only going for No Trigger but then got this cd and, wow. This band rules. I want this, I liked the one song. I don't have any money though. I mean, I could use rent money or charge it, but if it isn't a GREAT ass cd, then it's just not worth it. Seems like people like it, but don't think it's anything special. Oh, I remember catching the AG!/FHH/SC/OMG tour in Toronto and kids were running around with... what are they called? Sparklers? Those sticks with fire at the end. I feared for my life. INSANE! 4/5 Isn't this band French Canadian? It might explain why they don't interact too well with the audience... Not saying anything about the French, but if their first language isn't English there could be problems. I'm quite interested in checking this out. Though I may wait to find a used copy. Fucking...love...this...album. This is an OK band, nothing special, but pretty good. Like the review said, very HWM-ish. I like all the songs on this album, but not as a whole. They're good for mixtapes and randomized playlists, but when I listen to the album, it tends to blur together. this is a really good album Where's this review? | Features
