While browsing the archives of the '.org, I noticed a glaring absence in the reviews: Nirvana's Unplugged album, from the 1994 MTV broadcast.

this is my ode to childhood heroes. I love it is is one of the best i think i love this band!!!!! "Good, now maybe we can get another Nirvana to clean it the fuck up again." Great album !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 one of the albums that really got me into music. "This is ok, but I prefer the Arrested Development unplugged a little more." Nirvana is overrated. However this cd fits all of the hype that nirvana has around it. the things nirvana has other than this cd, is the movement towards mainstream alternative artists and the best ironic name in music. That being stated they are still good; and Kurt often said that his band wasnt as good as bands sucha as the pixies so i think thatt that point is moot. "It's amazing that Dave Grohl has been in the best band of the past 15 years and the worst band of the past 15 years. "Have you heard the vast majority of whats played today? I would describe it as R&B/dance shit and scene bands where the look is more important than the sound. Holy shit we are exactly where we were 20 years ago." "this review was prompted a few weeks ago after a kid i work with told me he had never heard of nirvana. he was 18." "how come people always come on here and bitch? dont u guys have ANYTHING better to do?" "I agree partly, I really dislike todays mainstream radio as much as the next guy, but before Nirvana it was way worse. It was always either hair metel bands or R&B/ dance music shit. "Alternative" bands weren't played on the mainstream radio before Nirvana." how come people always come on here and bitch? dont u guys have ANYTHING better to do? if you like the album, and the band, good for you, leave a comment. if not, go somewhere else, and look for bands you DO like. jesus fucking christ. on a good note, i love this cd, and nirvana are, while overrated, legendary. personally i dont think he killed himself. look it up, you'll find why. courtney love is a big enough greedy bitch to do him in. and shes not as stupid as people think. she could have easily gotten away with it. and in my opinion, you have to be about 3 times worse than green day, offspring, AFI, rise against, blink-182 and the like for me to call you a sellout. you want sell outs? go look at fucking jerry only. that guy is using the misfits name to sell everything from shoe laces to teddy bears. and hes the only original member left. they just play shitty covers of their old stuff. thank you, and have a nice day. Cool, guys! For people who are saying things about Cobain killing himself, that's in poor taste. When anyone dies, it's a tragedy. I personally hate Nirvana, but Kurt Cobain was really a punk rocker. He happened to do something new, which inadvertantly ruined punk, thus opening it up to dumb suburban kids like me. Without Nirvana, Green Day wouldn't be played sold-out stadiums, and we wouldn't have Blink 182 or Good Charlotte. But, we also wouldn't have so many hardcore and anarcho-punk reissues. I would be listening to shitty hair metal and cock rock like my friends, and I would have nothing to be a music eliteist about. Basically, nothing is black or white. So...I think I'm gonna review more old records. Oh, and if Nirvana counts a punk, then so does Motorhead. Some of the between song banter here is pretty interesting. Courtney Love likes to claim that by this point, Kurt had really'd had enough of Dave. Well, maybe it's just a coincidence, but every time Dave says something on this, Kurt just completely ignores him. At times, it seems like Dave is even goading Kurt . . . go back and listen to it and see what I mean . . . most overated band of all time "If you still like the Foo's, you probably need to hang out with your frat brothers less." Take this all with a grain of "Scruffy's drunk" brand salt: yeah, a lot of people arent old enough to remember... "And what, mind you, is so fucking fantastic about rock music today? Every time I turn the radio on I tend to cringe." I love this CD. It's amazing that Dave Grohl has been in the best band of the past 15 years and the worst band of the past 15 years. This is a really enjoyable CD. All of Nirvana's stuff is classic, though, I think I like Incesticide the best. As for over/underratedness I'm sure a lot of people place more importance in Nirvana than they really deserve but the fact that so many people haven't heard of them or lump them in with all the mediocre grunge that followed is just about to the point of evening that out. NIrvana is also "legendary" because of the lead singer's 'martyrdom'...ie Sublime... Both bands immortalized by death. Stupid. Both would still be heavily influential and respected, but both are overrated due to death.... 1. nevermind "Ok yea, nirvana is over-rated but fuckin' Sublime? There is no that claim holds any water." The radio on the music tends to always be the same a handful of bands that "shake the conerstone" and the rest jock on that style. No doubt nirvana was amazing but lets not get carried away. "And what, mind you, is so fucking fantastic about rock music today? Every time I turn the radio on I tend to cringe" My comment below should say anyone born after 85 couldn't comprehend... point is, before nirvana, music was totally different. they shook the cornerstone of rock and roll - even though they were ripping off ______ (insert the pixies, melvins, whoever here)... they just had a combination of right time right place right sound. Ok yea, nirvana is over-rated but fuckin' Sublime? There is no that claim holds any water. Tied with Sublime for "Most Overrated Band Ever". Good band, but c'mon, what was so great? They made the 'grunge' sound popular. So? Alice in Chains was the best Seattle band of that genre anyway, in my opinion. Just to everyone saying think of all the bands Nirvana influenced today, I'm just curious what mager bands today in the alternative music state nirvana as a mager direct influence on their desire to form a band. examples please. i'd be glad to answer your question, but i'll first need to know what "mager" means? Just to everyone saying think of all the bands Nirvana influenced today, I'm just curious what mager bands today in the alternative music state nirvana as a mager direct influence on their desire to form a band. examples please. This record is pretty damn good. My favorite posthumous release. Regardless, this band opened me up to music I didn't even know existed when I was 14. I.E. Nofx, Supersuckers, Mudhoney. I don't know enough to talk about whether it was suicide or murder. "you cannot deny the enormous effect they had on rock music, the effects of which are still felt today and will be felt for years to come." This is ok, but I prefer the Arrested Development unplugged a little more. i honestly didn't know people still believe it was a suicide Actually the Doors own that title. It's hard for me to comprehend what it must be like being born in a post Nirvana world. I grew up in the 70s-80s so I had the chance to witness first hand the grunge explosion and how it changed the way rock music will be perceived forever. "As such, I have never heard this album, and this review makes me want to. That's why people should review old albums. Besides, it's not like it's hurting anyone. If you think more current bands should be reviewed, review them." Re: "not one of you has addressed the fact that he abandoned his own daughter" I like the old reviews. I see it as a way to make sure that if someone unfamiliar with a CD stumbles upon a review of it, it'll make them like it. "They knew that they were overrated and that's why they paid homage to their influences so explicitly. They were true to their roots when they could have pretended that they were originals and no one in mainstream america would have known the difference. You have to respect that." I love how much people think Nirvana sold out and then they talk about how overrated they were. They did sell out but not intentionally; they are overrrated. But they were as surprised as anyone when they got their fame because countless other bands like them had not made it and then suddenly Nirvana was the center of the music world. They knew that they were overrated and that's why they paid homage to their influences so explicitly. They were true to their roots when they could have pretended that they were originals and no one in mainstream america would have known the difference. You have to respect that. " it's fine to not like a band, but an embarassment? if you think music would be where it is today without nirvana, you are wrong." no one has a right to judge his death. he fucking killed himself. daughter or not he had reason to do it and did. no one should be praising his death or anything but we should feel remorse. its an awful thing when someone can actually do that to themselves. im sure mr. cobain thought about his daughter before he offed himself. he chose to do it for some reason and none of us have any right to put our two cents in on the matter. leave it alone. two things. i find it interesting how you all lambaste the other scott for saying kurt cobain was an embarrasment. yet not one of you has addressed the fact that he abandoned his own daughter. and skaboom, nobody has to know who nirvana is to be able to stay in your illustrious car. and i have to say i was surprised that that came from you. oh, also. i don't want to sound like a dick-hole or anything, but... wow, there really is no review for this? that's a tad insane in the old membrane. remember how big the OFFSPRING WERE!?@?!!@?# I bet these same kids who don't know who Nirvana is get impressed when they read Rolling Stone: "Oh, the guys in Velvet Revolver were in some other band? Maybe I'll check it out sometime. Guns N Roses? That's a silly name." Wait i just forgot that this was released in like 1998, a few years before breakdowns were invented. Nirvana was alright, would be better if they had breakdowns though. this review was prompted a few weeks ago after a kid i work with told me he had never heard of nirvana. he was 18. "Nirvana were overrated." >>>yet he's martyred and idolized everday. i'm with the other scott. this is the only nirvana release i like. Its a great record. Everything else seemed to be too overblown, but this is as solid a set as possible. This is more impressive than all the 'rock' they ever recorded. i remember posting this argument a long, long time ago in anotother Nirvana thread, but i'll post it again. C;mon now, tis is classic and all, but was a review even necessary. Are there really people out there that have no idea about this album?...I must be getting old. C;mon now, tis is classic and all, but was a review even necessary. Are there really people out there that have no idea about this album?...I must be getting old. Sorry to burst your bubble man, but in 1994 "Dookie" WAS RADIO POP!! Nirvana are the only punk rock band to go mainstream........Green Day, Offspring...that's just pop music. Kurt cheated on this. That geetar ain't "unplugged" on "Man Who Sold the World".... blah wow this takes me back to middle school. great record. this and in utero i can consistently still listen to till this day. green day may have introduced me to punk rock but it was nirvana who got me into rock period. score is for colin and the album! This is the first band I got into by myself when I was about 9 years old, about 14 years ago. Before them, I just listened to crap like the Black crows and Guns 'n roses. wow, colin, i think i love you....this deserves a perfect score Great album. I got this record the same Christmas morning that I got NBA Jam for SNES in grade 6, and each listen takes me back to those days. I can still listen today with the same interest as I did back then when I was growing my hair long and wearing flannel trying to look like a grunge rocker. i fucking love meat puppets II like no other. Maybe it's the fact that I'm not getting any younger, but this is the only Nirvana I ever listen to any more. It's so moody and mellow as opposed to loud and abrasive. The instument that Kurt Cobain was best at working was not the guitar, it was a shotgun! colin, EXCELLENT review. and thanks for reminding me of this album. i just pulled it out of my collection. "how many reviews on this site open up with someone talking about looking through the reviews and not seeing one for "insert album here"?" "Dookie was the record that hooked me away from radio pop" While this is my least favorite nirvana album I always respected the bands descisions to not do any of their big hits (sans "come as you are") on the show. how many reviews on this site open up with someone talking about looking through the reviews and not seeing one for "insert album here"? now that im done being negative ill say this is a great album "how bad is it that you look worse than kurt does right now" |
