I always figured this would be Thursday's 'make or break' album. Though they put forward a strong attempt with War All the Time, it wasn't able to match the all-around intensity and drive that made them so incredibly popular with Full Collapse. I thought if they weren't able to do it with this release, they never would, and would soon fade off into a list of bands that had a strong foundation but never grew into their own voice. Fortunately for Thursday, A City by the Light Divided buries any idea that this band can't reinvent themselves. This seems to be the record the band tried to make with War All the Time, but wasn't ready to.

This isn't an album to be judged by a song. Sure, there are some on here that could be labeled as the best songs Thursday have written (the haunting "Sugar in the Sacrament" or the ferocious "Into the Blinding Light"), but in order to really appreciate how far the band has come since the days of Waiting, this has to be a record listened to front-to-back.

Musically, this is gold. It is simultaneously Thursday's most diverse collection of songs as well as their most coherent. The production of Dave Fridmann (weezer, The Flaming Lips) is well done, but I'd say at times is a little too obvious; the introduction to "Telegraph Avenue Kiss" is great, but I wonder about the ability to reproduce a few of these songs live. Production aside, this album manages to feature the melodic ("Running from the Rain"), the poppy ("Counting 5-4-3-2-1"), and the intense ("At This Velocity"), and still sound like a singluar piece of art.

One of the biggest debates about Thursday has always been lead vocalist Geoff Rickly. He's obviously been practicing, because the vocal range on Divided is great. From the unrelenting "The Other Side of the Crash" to the soft comforting vocals on the sparse introduction to "The Lovesong Writer," Rickly has never been this good. Lyrically, I felt War All the Time to be weak at times, and while Divided doesn't feel as lyrically dominant as Full Collapse, parts like the end of the epic "Autumn Leaves Revisited" showcase Rickly's talent of writing desperate music with an undying sense of hope;

There must be somewhere that cigarettes burn through the night and leaves don't abandon their trees to the light, the sky is always clear and the summer never ends. Won't you take me there?
All praise aside, I don't think this is a perfect record. While Rickly's vocals are better, they're not at an expert level, and in some songs I can hear the familiar strain of passion and tension in his voice, whereas at times on the record it sounds methodical and practiced. "We Will Overcome" seems almost forced, almost too reserved. As gorgeous as "Autumn Leaves Revisited" is, I enjoyed the aggressive quality from the demo that was leaked on to the internet months ago. Obviously you cannot fault a band over their recording choices and leaked material, that's just a bit of personal opinion in there.

Many times when a band releases a record that is radically new and different from their traditional sound, it divides fans and risks losing the foundation that built the band to begin with (with labelmates Thrice being a good example). With A City by the Light Divided, I would say the band has released an album that not only will prove themselves to their oldest fans, but also invite those that wrote them off as a half-talented emo band to think again. I started listening to Thursday when I was 17; now, at 23, the band is able to remind me why I initially loved them, as well as showing they're growing musically, as well.

This is a great release for Thursday, and I'd say that they no longer have to worry about besting Full Collapse. Unfortunately, for a band that set the bar so high on themselves once and have now done it again, they've got a big challenge in making an album better than this. Until then, I'd expect this to be making rounds on quite a few "Best Of" lists come the end of the year.

maybe i just didn't "get" it. but i simply didn't enjoy acbtld nearly as much as full collapse or war all the time. perhaps it was the overabundance of atmospheric interludes, or perhaps it simply wasn't as good as their past two albums.

definately grew on me... its not an easy listen
i think that Thursday definately changed their sound for this record... they didn't have any epic soaring songs like "autumn leaves revisited" and "the lovesong writer" (incidentally, my fave songs on the album)
the song that started out as being my favourites (We Will Overcome), i like less now... but its the songs that require a second listen to get the full effect that become more rememberable

I really like this record but Thursday sold out in a big way. I mean, running from the rain is in a car commercial for chissake.

    Some of the tracks are iffy, but 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11... Awesome.

I thing The Lovesong Writer and Autumn Leaves Revisited are my favorites...

5-4-3-2-1 isent a new years eve countdown. the song is actually about getting out of new jersey and actually doign somthing. and i think it was a good idea witht he other side of the car crash. seeing how understanding in a car crash really was they song to get them started..and "the other side of the crash" is a great idea since this cd was obviously going to be under so much critisim.

Now when i first listened to the ablum i just thought it was a good album. i dident think it was as good as full collapse. but it grew on my after listening to it a few times and now im in love with the cd. def. outdoes full collapse.
    good cd.

    Best thing they've ever done.

Full Collapse was half amazing tracks, and half pretty boring songs.

War All The Time had the best song they've ever written (For The Workforce, Drowning) and was better musically, but unfortunately that song was the only standout and the rest kind of blended together

    this kinda combines that

    My Score:

i bought this yesterday and i am digging it so far. just like Menos El Oso, this cd takes awhile to grow on you. This is the equivalent of "Vheissu" for Thursday except some how Thursday succeeded in their "new" direction because it seems as if they kept alot of the energy and passion from the "full collapse" days intact despite the fact that there is a consistent emphasis on mood and atmosphere that hangs over the entire cd.
I also thought that "war all the time" sucked balls with exception to a few songs (Steps Ascending and the Title track), so its good to see them rebound from their first major label try.

I like "We Will Overcome", "Telegraph Avenue Kiss" and "Autumn Leaves Revisted" the most so far. "At This Velocity" reminds me of Converge ALOT.

The 7 inch is "Counting..." with a B-side "Even the sand is made of seashells" and that was no secret. Anybody with google could've found that out.

Thursday is lucky enough to say they have minigenerations of fans that have album preferences and hold individual releases close to their hearts for separate reasons. And some fans, like myself, who look forward to each release in a major way, because they believe it'd be hard to be let down with such a lineup.

What's unfortunate is how many of you seem to have failed fourth grade english class. No wonder the only criticisms you can come up with involve album art and thank-you's.

As for the question of "being pulled off live", I was at the free show in Asbury Park, Wednesday, and the only choice I questioned was "Running from the Rain", which is absolutely beautiful but not too crowd-rousing. "Lovesong Writer" was just as amazing as I'd expected it to be live. The end of "Sugar in the Sacrament" had everyone going nuts.

Thursday needs to go acoustic. Or atleast make a whole acoustic cd. The acoustic version of "A Hole In The World" is the best thing the bands ever released. They were always decent, but that song in acoustic form just totally blows me away. Geoff's voice is so amazing acoustic. It just works better. Not to mention, "This Song Brought To You By A Falling Bomb" is also amazing....not acoustic, but piano...and almost as great. Seriously, an album of all acoustic, piano songs would be freagin great. Atleast a full acoustic/piano album of their best songs. God that would be amazing.

The review says that Thursday no longer have to worry about "Besting Full Collapse," but it also says "Divided doesn't feel as lyrically dominant as Full Collapse."
This doesn't make any sense. In order to be better than another album, Full Collapse in this case, it would have to be, at a minimum, as lyrically dominant as that release or more dominant. By not being as dominant, it stands to reason it cannot "best" Full Collapse.

uh... no. lyrics are only part of an album. every other aspect of this record beats full collapse - even if just by a margin. overall it's a better record.

hey g-dawg, he judges it on the genre, as well.

I judge the record against hte past works of the band (which I think this bests) plus the works currently out there in their niche (in this case, popular post-hardcore).

    Posted by tylerdurden8136 on 2006-05-02 13:08:03

i haven't listened to this enough times to give it a fair score, so i won't.

my initial reaction is that i'm not enjoying it all that much, but i really need to get a good copy of this so i'll probably go out and get it in the next few days to see what it truly sounds like.

    either way, nice review colin.

Posted by Crookedsuperhero on 2006-05-02 13:07:36

I've looked at some of your reviews before but never really paid any attention. You don't like the stuff i do, which is fine. I don't care, and neither do you.

But this was just one of those times where i saw the band name, looked at the score and thought 'what?' I still don't see how you can just judge an albums score based on the how it compares to the bands previous efforts only though.

Posted by colin on 2006-05-02 12:58:07

You judge it by that? So....the last Hawthorne heights album was a ten?

It would be foolish of me to judge Thursday against, say, Bad Religion. I judge the record against hte past works of the band (which I think this bests) plus the works currently out there in their niche (in this case, popular post-hardcore). I don't see other bands reaching out beyond their screams and wailing guitars and chants of death and impending tragedy. Most are still trying to figure out what Thursday did to get Full Collapse to sell so well.

As for your Hawthorne Heights comparison, I've never heard them but I assume they're either pop punk or a Taking Back Sunday-ish half screamy band. Either way, I'd probably judge their album based on the fact it's a re-hashing of a copy of a mostly unoriginal effort to begin with, and probably give it a poor score.

If you don't agree with my score, that's fine and I respect that. Howver the fact I've been reviewing albums on this site for three years and suddenly you start questioning how I review them? Come on, give me a little more credit than that.

You judge it by that? So....the last Hawthorne heights album was a ten?

That's the stupidist thing i've ever heard. Well, almost.

full collapse was amazing, war all the time wasnt. ill have to hear this one first, but i dont have high hopes.

    A 9?

    Please.

a 9 for thursday - i really don't think they'll be able to beat this. is it a 9 in the entire spectrum of music? no, but i think if you look at it in the context of thursday and thursday-like releases, it's really high up there.

and re: jesse: thanks for pointing that out, really. i always like someone to point out my writing faults so i can try and eliminate them. i'll work on that in my future reviews.

"This review doesn't tell me anything about how this album sounds. You just say they re-invented themselves. Bowie re-invented himself with each album, so did Madonna. You have to tell us how they changed."

the main problem is they haven't changed at all. i do not hear anything that the reviewer is talking about.

jesse is correct. for someone who has never heard the band, words like "epic" "intense" and "poppy" are nice but you still have no clue what the band sounds like. having said that, i've heard thursday before and while seeing that they are a step above the bands that try to ape their style, this band does absolutely nothing for me.

Fantastic album from the best band of a really shitty, watered down genre...it sucks when people pass them off just because of the company that they find themselves in sometimes

This is not a 4.5 star album. This is the same album thursday has been releasing for years. i like thursday, don't get me wrong, but its about time for that promised change and experimentation.

Ignite isn't out till May 16th so the review won't run till then. But the short version is that it's amazing and possibly the best thing they've ever done.

I... I love you. I just wanted to say it.

Posted by colin on 2006-05-02 02:01:55

i'd also like to add i just heard the unused b-side, "even the sand is made of seashells" (which was on the 7" and itunes bonus)... and it's really, really strong and totally different than anything thursday has ever done. it makes me really intrigued as to what was left off the disc.

Posted by UncleFunkyPants on 2006-05-02 01:46:43

I'm picking this thing up later today. It will be good. I'm sure of it.

Posted by maverick on 2006-05-02 01:31:40

I've been listening to this record all day, and while I'm not freaking out about it, it's definitely solid. Dave Fridmann made this band sound incredible -- it's like the Flaming Lips gone post-hardcore.

    [Sorry for the spam]

Anyone have an extra ticket for the Alkaline Trio / Against Me show at the Metro on Thursday? I just got screwed out of one.

If so, email me at ftacos@hotmail.com. Thanks.

i'm not listening to this until i have the full cd in my hands, but i have a feeling it will be a dissapointment, especially lyrically.

there are parts lyrically that are poor... while i know what he's saying metaphorically in "we will overcome," i wish it was a less awkward chorus. but there are some really gold lyrical moments too.

elvaq - in regards to counting, i didn't like it until i heard it with the album, and then it seemed to fit right in and make sense.

Posted by RRK on 2006-05-02 00:43:56

Hmm, just from listening to the stream, We Will Overcome has become my favourite song so far. That will probably change, but it doesn't seem forced at all to me.

Posted by LevitateMe on 2006-05-02 00:43:38

Where's the Sunset Rubdown review? That's the question.

Pitchfork will review it tomorrow and give it a really high score and it will lose all of it's mystique.

I'm just kidding, but I like it when my reviews go up a couple days after I submit them.

Posted by ElVaquero on 2006-05-02 00:42:37

I still don't get why everyone thinks the new Ignite is any good. Am I getting out of touch with punk? A lot of it seems really cheesy and lame.

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-05-02 00:41:05

Also, I didn't mean that to sound as contrary as it does. I'm just so psyched for that show.

Also, I never really liked Thursday, but in dealing with colin (he's doing the art for my band's album), his enthusiasm for this CD has me intrigued.

No, how you put a lineup together is Lagwagon, The Lawrence Arms and A Wilhelm Scream. I cannot wait for this show.

Posted by ElVaquero on 2006-05-02 00:39:28

Also, am I the only one who thinks "Counting (5-4-3-2-1)" is possibly the most annoying song ever?
