I was obsessed with The Art of Drowning back in high school. So obsessed that I wanted to share my love of the band with everyone. I did a horribly shaky rendition of “Morning Star” in front of my confused drama class, sported an AFI sticker on the back of my beat up 1984 Dodge Ram, and even sang “Days of the Phoenix” at a school rally. Along with Thursday, AFI made hardcore accessible for a punk rock kid who didn’t stray too far from his NOFX and Dropkick Murphys CDs -- who knew hardcore could retain its edge, and be so damn catchy at the same time!

Fast-forward 6 years, and my love for AFI’s music became more nostalgia than anything else, leaving my true passion for the band behind with prom and geometry class. When Justin asked me to review AFI’s top-secret show at Slim’s, I felt like I was going to see how an old friend was doing, rather than attending a rock show. As soon as I reached the venue and saw how many kids were packed in Slim’s, I realized that AFI was doing just fine without me.

Due to my 9-5 (curse you Virgin Mega Store!), I was unable to catch the opening bands Ceremony and another band I can’t remember, and for that I apologize profusely. After what felt like forever, the kids started to get impatient, and began chanting “through our bleeding, we are one!” A fog machine began filling the empty stage, and the crowd started screaming fanatically as “Miseria Cantare -- The Beginning,” the eerie opening track off of Sing the Sorrow emanated from the speakers. One by one, the band members emerged from the thick fog to the cheers of 700 bodies, leading the crowd to chant “Love your hate, your faith lost, you’re now one of us.”

Then the Bay Area quartet burst into a theatrical hour-long set, complete with an amazing light show, singer Davy Havok doing a front flip into the crowd, and a tuneful precision that only a group of seasoned veterans could pull off. The most noticeable difference in AFI’s sound is Havok’s new appreciation of the guttural scream. Havok shrieked like a panther stuck in a bear trap throughout the entire set, adding a brooding heaviness to AFI’s music that wasn’t previously noticeable.

The band mostly played stuff off of Sing the Sorrow and The Art of Drowning, and while these tunes don’t mean as much to me as they did in high school, the boys sure know how to put on a good show. As an encore, the band came out and closed with crowd favorite "God Called in Sick Today,” and Havok stepped out into the crowd and sang the final verses while being held up by his legions of followers. Watching one excited dude rise up above the rest of his peers and sing along next to Havok reminded me how much this band means to so many kids.

AFI played with the enthusiasm of a band that just wrote their first batch of tunes, and with the talent of a band that has been rocking their instruments for years. The band danced around the stage like they were entertaining an arena, and with the amount of passion and musical ability those guys have under their belts, one can only imagine what they could accomplish with a bigger budget and a larger stage. Even if you have kind of grown apart, it’s always good to catch up with an old friend, and it’s even better to find out that their future is as bright as their past. Expect big things from this band in the next year...

Does anyone else think that Miss Murder sounds like an American Idiot b-side?

welcome to two weeks ago when everyone commented on this. jk.

but yeah, i thought so imediately, and from what i have seen on internet boards like this one, so has alot of others

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, May 6, 2006 at 7:43 PM (EDT)

you sang at a school rally.

From the recordings I've heard/seen of one of the shows they played last week (or was it the week before?), his screaming voice has changed - even on the older stuff, I think. But I was drunk at the time, so I'm not entirely sure what song they were playing.

The point is though, new songs/new songs live = shite, older songs live = not as good as they used to be.

Davey's screaming on the new stuff, as well as live, seemingly, is fucking horrible. He sounds like fucking Chester Bennington - he's got the whole "I'm about to puke" thing going on, which just sounds awful.

last time i saw them was in the fall after sts came out (so 2003?) and davey sounded great. even played at least one off of shut your mouth and his screaming was right on....but yeah, that was 2 and a half years ago so maybe he has changed

Score's for all the new material I've heard so far. Miss Murder and Kill Caustic both fucking blow. And this is coming from someone who thought that despite having some of their weakest stuff on it, Sing The Sorrow also had some of their best. Yuck.

P.S. Thursday has never done anything that resembles hardcore.

They're connected to the scene in a different way than most of the bands that ape their sound. It's like how later Fugazi doesn't sound like hardcore, but there is a deep connection there that influences the sound.

P.S. Thursday has never done anything that resembles hardcore. Ill give you a pass on AFI because Shut Your Mouth sounds like hardcore to me and its a great album.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, May 6, 2006 at 12:50 AM (EDT)

Miss the opening band. Fine. The story about how you are cool because you were a fan way back when Art of Drowning came out and calling that Hardcore. Whatever. No list of songs played? OK. Where I draw the line is the Panther in a bear trap line. WTF is that? Score is for your nerdy ass singing Morningstar in front of your class. Roffles atchoo.

I'm so pumped to see them in June in Toronto. I love this band.

I don't understand why people complain about personal shit in show reviews. A show is nothing if not a personal experience and a review of a show is merely an explanation of how the show affected the reviewer and why. Without some context a show review is useless.

The crowd actually chants "Through our bleeding, we are one"? I'm going to hit the next kid I see in an AFI shirt.

So does that mean AP is going to dedicate an entire issue to them and have four difference limited edition magazine covers once their album comes out?

lol, I'm just kidding... or am I?

Posted by rubyx on 2006-05-05 12:26:24

So secret! I live in SF and I had no idea this even happened.

    Posted by Dante3000 on 2006-05-05 11:39:21

I really doubt I would get much out of seeing AFI today. Their music just isn't the kind of thing I could really connect to.
But I guess it still means a hell of a lot to a hell of a lot of kids and that's worth something.
As for those screams that litter songs like "Miss Murder" that shit needs to go it's just a cheap substitute for real screams.

I can't believe they played with Ceremony, I was more expecting Fall Out Boy these days.

Despite whatever you think of their newer stuff, it can't be denied that AFI put on a good live show.

You missed out on Ceremony. One of the best bands in hardcore right now. Their new album will hopefully be the best 10 minutes of music this year.
