The success of Siren Song of the Counter Culture, Rise Against's previous album, should have been a surprise, but frankly, I must admit that it wasn't. The single that broke the band was a simple contribution to a little compilation called Punk Goes Acoustic. But even then it was clear that it was a little moment of greatness; a powerful hardcore/punk band channeling their emotion through a simple acoustic song, and when it was re-recorded and released on Siren Song, I knew that it would have an impact.

That's not to say that I even understood what happened when the band left Fat Wreck Chords and signed to Dreamworks; I loved the album that garnered them major label attention, but it seemed too honest, too dark and too real to be force-fed through glamorous MTV singles; they didn't have the striking image of an AFI, or the friendly snottiness of Green Day. But I had faith; the label might try to change them, but I knew they'd refuse, and for the most part, they did.

The one disappointment then, was that they were coupled with a talented hitmaker producer that unfortunately just didn't understand this genre of music. His influence resulted in an album that suffered in small but significant ways as he tried to force the band's gritty Midwestern sound into a slick modern rock package. To their credit, the band managed to keep things somewhat raw despite his influence, but it seemed clear to any fan that something wasn't right. It was a good album, but not as great as Rise Against could be.

With The Sufferer & the Witness, Rise Against has delivered an album that fixes those problems and surpasses Siren Song and their previous best Revolutions Per Minute handily and also expands the band's range without changing their sound. Lyrically and musically, this is a surprisingly dark record, and powerfully single-minded and cohesive. Tim's vocals are at the forefront, delivering scattered snippets of shout-along rage, interspersed through some remarkably strong and anthemic melodies, his voice conveying both abject despondency and earnest hope throughout.

Tracks like “Injection” and “Drones” are perfect ragers, delivered in Rise Against's trademark double-time, replete with apocalyptic imagery derived from very real fears. The first single, “Ready to Fall,” with its devastatingly powerful video, is an escalating, complex track with a throat-shredding bridge, and a compelling chorus. Even the album's more unorthodox moments, like the mumbled opening lyrics of “The Approaching Curve,” are carried by powerful choruses and an incredibly tight instrumental section.

The next potential single is also the dramatic “Roadside,” in which Tim couples his increasingly confident vocals with the stunning voice of Holy Roman Empire's Emily Schambra; it's not an acoustic single and certainly not the graduation day parade of “Swing Life Away,” but it's a beautiful song, driven by minimal instrumentation and tasteful use of strings. Closing the album is the anthemic “Survive,” which sounds like the best of Revolutions with a shredding guitar riff and warp-speed drumming.

Production is another highlight of the record; having returned home to Bill Stevenson's Blasting Room studios, Sufferer sounds like Rise Against should. It's flawlessly recorded, but never sterile, and in many ways, Stevenson demonstrates how he is really the fifth member of any band he produces. The vocals are solid, guitars are warm and thick, and the rhythm section is driving but never dominant. Listening to Sufferer, it becomes clear how wrong any other producer would be for this band.

In my review of Revolutions, three years ago I commended Rise Against for their ability to convey emotion without succumbing to self-pity; with their ability to be catchy without writing pop songs, and with their reverence to roots steeped in hardcore punk. With Sufferer, the band maintains this virtue, while continuing to evolve as songwriters, musicians and as people. Another incredible effort from one of the finest outfits around today.

pretty damn good. i just hate major labels and this is clearly them trying to retain their Punk Rock roots, which i find acceptable. its just that the punk rage isn't there anymore. its kinda like major-label bad religion but worse. but their first two records kinda changed my life, so its hard to bitch. i mean, come on, a P.R.M.C label on the front!?!?!?!

Favourite album of the year so far, Chamber The Cartridge is a song I liked straight away, it took a while for me to get into the rest, as one night I realised how amazing Under The Knife, Prayer Of The Refugee, Drones, Behind Closed Doors, Worth Dying For and The Approaching Curve were, and later got into Survive followed by The Good Left Undone and Roadside.

Injection and Bricks took longest, Injection is now one of my favourites, but now although I like Bricks, I'd say it is my least favourite on the album.

Posted by istapledmyfoot on 2006-08-10 11:28:09

Maybe it's because i'm like, all smart and arty now but I bought this album out of nostalgia and was kind of bored by it. RPM is still pretty kick ass every now and then, and this sounds almost exactly the same.. but it just doesn't quite do it for me. The production is super clean, and the whole presentation is just too heartfelt for it's own good, like they could take themselves slightly less seriously, i.e. that kick ass Journey cover. Oh well.

    My Score:

Rise Against is one of the best punk bands out there, anyone who says otherwise doesn't know a fucking thing about music. This is an amazing album, best songs being "Injection, Prayer of the Refugee, Drones, Chamber of Cartridge and Behind Closed Doors". The female vocals on "Roadside" take the song much farther, and anyone who can't understand the cover art shouldn't talk about it. Bloody amazing.

Okay, this album really has grown on me. There is not a bad track on here. The only real complaint I have is the opening track. While "Chamber the Cartridge" is a great song, I just wish Rise Against would've opened with one of their more hardcore numbers, like they did with "Siren Song..." I like openers that knock me in the teeth.

Good thing I listened to this before I broke out Refused's "The Shape of Punk to Come," or I might have not gotten to this until two months from now.

Good review, but a question for aubin:

If you consider this "an incredible effort from one of the finest bands today," and you think this is their best album, why only four stars and not five?

    Posted by Poison_Operation on 2006-07-11 14:38:10

Yeah, this will definitely have to grow on me. I'm on my third time listening to it, and it's literally growing on me one track at a time as of this writing. Oddly enough, the songs that have grown on me include "The Approaching Curve." Weird, I know, what with the spoken word and everything. The other two that have grown on me thus far are "Roadside" (in which I agree with Aubin: this song has single written all over it) and "Chamber the Cartridge." I'm hopeful, though, as it took me a while to really appreciate and enjoy each of Rise Against's previous albums.

I'll post my score sometime in the next two weeks, when I can form a full opinion on it...if I remember...which I probably won't...

Seems like half of the album is strictly choruses....

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at 3:07 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

I guess I might have to let this grow on me. It's nothing special and I'm confused why everyone is busting a nut over it. Better than Siren Song and not as good as RPM. It's hard to take anything this band says about "the man"--and their general take on politics seriously at all. Can anyone say top ten TRL radio rock band? Blah. Too many generic chorus/verse songs lacking the energy that RPM had. The single isn't that great and I'm already sick of it.

But then again, I like my "political" punk to be angry and include scathing commentary on politics and the "scene". Not huge radio rock choruses and MTV audience pandering.. Propagandhi, please!

Posted by Waffles on 2006-07-08 00:06:43

obviosly some of the members here do not understand how songwriting goes. you dont try and write songs in a certain style of music. when the band came out with their album titled "Revolutions per Minute", thats who they were. and for "Siren Song", when they wrote "Swing Life Away", thats who they were. bands dont write songs to please the public, before you can please the public you must first please yourself.

but back to the new album. it is my favorite of the four and it stays fit with Rise Against's politically charged style. its a great follow up to "Siren Song" by one of the greatest punk bands today.

    My Score:

This band is on top of the punk world right now!!! This is easily going to be in my top five of the year.

The reviewer said it perfectly "the ability to be catchy without writing pop songs," that is exactly what Rise Against is and what every punk band should strive for.

    My Score:

What is the deal with all the pops on this album? Major label albums usually are pretty damn smooth... I can't imagine how all the random clicks passed everyone's inspection. This isn't some low-fi indie band, so I doubt they're trying to simulate vinyl...

Some of the songs on this album are pretty good. Chamber The Cartridge, Injection, Drones. I really like The Good Left Undone, one of Rise Against's better songs. But some songs, like Ready To Fall, strike me as extremely repetitive and watered down.

And that The Approaching Curve is ridiculous. I like spoken word - "Everything you ever wanted to know about silence" by Glassjaw is one great way to do it. I fucking like William Shatner's album, that's some classy shit. But this is cheesy bullshit. I never want to hear the word "cadence" again.

    what does that even mean?

there still is, and always will be bands that maintain and keep alive the "punk ethic." yes, it has become watered down thanks to majors and mainstream pop culture, but it will never completely die. have you become that jaded and cynical???????

    Posted by feeeding5000 on 2006-07-06 15:31:39

...And I have nothing against major labels, just something against a band that calls an album "Revolutions Per Minute", and then does a safe, cutesy acoustic pop song.

Horrible, horrible music. One of the "new wave of fucking sellouts". Punk IS dead, and now we're just raping the maggot-eaten corpse.

I didn't get that much from the single. Maybe you have to see the video with it. To be honest, with a band like this, there are only so many songs they can make that aren't going to sound like something ripped off of a previous album.

Rise Against Albums in order of awesomeness:

    1. The Unraveling
    2. RPM
    3. Sufferer
    4. Siren Song

Congratulations Rise Against, you finally made an album that isn't worse than the one that came before it!

This is the first whole album i've heard by this band, and it is pretty solid. Give it All is a great single, but my favorite songs would have to be Bricks and The Approaching Curve

" 'roadside? what happened to the hardcore?'

hey moron, they've never had 100% hardcore songs on any of their records. listen to The Unraveling again and you'll hear plenty of slow songs"

The Art of Losing? To the Core? State of the Union? yeah those arent hardcore at all. They may have had slow songs before but at least they still maintained a punk spirit, this P.O.S. is so cheesy and melodramatic that it could have been made by any of the generic MTV bands out there. Dont try and be a smart ass if your not going to be smart about it.

    My Score:

This is certainly better than Siren but I can't see any competition between this and RPM.
TO whoever said the Killing Tree were better....don't be a silly-billy....
I like this album although I did initially hate it.....

It's amazing to think that when everyone first heard about Rise Against going major, a lot of people felt they wouldn't meet the record label's demands and be dropped quite quickly. I feel as if this album is going to prove all those people (myself included) wrong and do very very well

Posted by iconoclast on 2006-07-04 14:14:41

another excellent review, but better than RPM???

    My Score:

I've had this record for a few weeks now and I can't stop listening to it. I too liked "Siren Song..." quite a bit when it first came out but after a while I'd reach for something else, usually "RPM," when I wanted to hear some Rise Against.

I'm still wondering if that will happen of a few months of listening to this album. I don't think it tops "RPM" but it might be close behind it. You have to admit, the hooks on this record as as catchy as ever, I can't get some of these songs out of my head and it's starting to piss off the people around me because I keep singing them at random.

Solid improvement over Siren Song. Tracks like Good Left Undone and Prayer of the Refugee are on par with,if not better than, tracks on RPM.

Who produced Siren Song? Was it GGGarth? I thought it sounded great and exactly the way it should have: a well-produced big rock album.

Great album, I like it way more than Siren Song, and for the record I didn't hate that album either. I still think RPM is their best, but this one is followed closely in 2nd place for me.

    My Score:

This album feels just like recycled choruses and riffs from RPM. I get tired of the veeerse CHOORRRRRUUUUUS (with baaaacking har-mo-nies) that they do on every single song. It's better that Siren Song, but that's mostly due to the production. Pretty disappointed.

Posted by sickboi on 2006-07-04 12:20:50

    Hey Aubin-

If you think this is better than RPM, why is RPM scored higher?

Posted by sickboi on 2006-07-04 12:19:07

I actually agree with Aubin. Every song on this album display's the band's range as musician's, and the amazing vocal abilities of Tim. The screaming intermingled with his singing doesn't sound forced in the least, and they seem to finally have developed a trademark sound, as opposed to previous comparisons to a plethora of bands.

    And Wyzo-
The Killing Tree is 1000000000000x better than Rise Against, we all know this, but I think the possibilities of getting another full length are pretty much slim to none. Though with what Tim can do with his voice now, can you imagine how amazing it would be?

I'm one of the few people who liked "Siren Song" more than "Revolutions Per Minute"! Now, i'm tired of both albums and mainly just listen to "The Unraveling" when I'm in a Rise Against mood. I'll go out and pick this up in a minute and see what I think of it.

I haven't heard the whole album, but the video for the single that I saw on Fuse the other night did not sound good to me, the vocals were way too slick and the instuments were nowhere near as brutal as RPM.

excellent quitarwork, excellent vocals. the lyrics maybe aren't their best, but this is by far their best album. I mean, look at the perfectly balanced complexity of the song structures and the way the guitars are used to complement eachother, all of the songs have so many layers. awesome.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, July 4, 2006 at 3:56 AM (EDT)

    "and surpasses Siren Song" yes

"and their previous best Revolutions Per Minute handily" no

"The next potential single is also the dramatic “Roadside,” i will lose so much respect for them if this happens

"without writing pop songs" under the knife?

"Tracks like “Injection” and “Drones” are perfect ragers" yes

" without changing their sound" RPM to TSatW = huge difference

"band maintains this virtue" roadside? what happened to the hardcore?

Some of this is really good, some is just ok.

For the people that DO shop at big-chain stores, Best Buy is going to have it for $7.99, and Circuit City will have it for $6.99.
Also, new Johnny Cash album: BB- $9.99, CC- $8.99.

I'm going to give in, and take a trip to Circuit City tomorrow. Sorry Ma and Pa.

SalsaShark, I agree with you. Also, the fact that someone was essentially kicked out of the band because of their hair has probably stuck in the back of my head and prevented me from getting into this band. I think they're a pretty good band, I've just never been as into them as a lot of people have been.
