The instant Jena Berlin frontman Jon gravelly snarls "if there was motive it's lost by now" at the beginning of Passion Waits as the Program Keeps Going, every listener will immediately say to themselves, very sincerely, "awesome, the Hot Water Music sound resurgence continues" (shit, they even have a song on an earlier demo called "Rooftops!"). What they won't realize is that Jena Berlin have a few tricks up their plaid sleeves that all the Lock and Keys, Lattermans, and New Bruiseses (all solid bands, mind you) don't.

This band freaks out live, the new shit rips too. This CD was definitely one of the best full lengths of 05. This isn't a solo act? Ohh, I hate it when bands sound like a person's name! Will, mark plays guitar. jon sings. glad they make inserts with all that information. Never got the big BvS/Fugazi comparison. BvS always just sounded like emo filtered through indie rock to me... Yeah they have their "harder" moments, but nothing regarding the consistent pummeling of Fugazi (not that Fugazi are out and out abrasive- but their music is certainly more straightforward and gripping). I listened to the song on their Myspace; it was pretty good. |
