Guttermouth will probably never, ever be regarded as anything more than a 2nd-rate NOFX -- but you know what, they probably really don't mind that. Nor do their fans -- the ones that are still around, at least.

While the skatepunk veterans assuredly lost a healthy portion of their fanbase with the 1-2 spiked pop punch of 2001's Covered with Ants and 2002's Gusto, the "back to the roots" dirty punk rock of 2004's Eat Your Face definitely brought a few back. While certainly brief, the newest effort here, Shave the Planet continues in this same fashion, bringing to mind a fair-to-middling mix of 1996's Teri Yakimoto and fan favorite, 1997's Musical Monkey.

The real problem is that these days, the band is about as funny as a Carlos Mencia special. Sure, they still know how to write a straight up, snotty pissed off skatepunk track (the self/American-critique "Shave the Planet"), but they're few and far between. "Capitalizing from Plump Mistakes" even brings out the kind of vocal intro that Mark Hopppus grew up on. But then, aside from a line frontman Mark Adkins spits telling some off-camera character to stick Zoloft up their ass, white noise reigns for the next 15 minutes or so. "God, Steve McQueen 'The Work Song'" is a jokey working class song -- a theme of which they explore again in the next, closing track "Upside Down Space Cockroach," which is riddled with ill-advised keyboards (like a considerable amount of the rest of the album) and alien effects on Adkins' voice. The one song that might stand out to most in this huge majority of the album is "Primate Camp," and that's because it sounds like an equally weird Gusto outtake.

This is hard to recommend even for the ones whose youth was ruled by the great, creative sense of humor (the conceptual genius of "What If?" is hard to deny) Guttermouth once held bountifully. If Eat Your Face made your "best of `04" list, it's hard to go wrong with a good portion of Shave the Planet; otherwise, let the green pastures of 5 o'clock shadows flourish.

My Score:

This album is really the point where i don't think guttermouth really care what shit they record.. Opens with three quality tracks, then they thought to themsleves, how many poeple will still buy this record if we fill it with crap!! Then they laughed when suckers like me went and brought it! their worst album to date (i didn't buy gusto, after the slating that received) Eat Your face was a slight return to form, but of dear.. 'Shave the Planet' more like 'Save Our Band'

I really like this album, good album to skate to and good to hear a band not take them selves to seriously these days.

I really do get alot of enjoyment from Guttermouth...While this is not even close to their best effort (I feel it was "Full LengthLP"), it definately brings back alot of memories. Guttermouth has always been the band that pushes the envelope as far as mainstream punk goes. From their Warped Tour fiasco, I couldn't help but respect them even more. I like that they bring the offensiveness back to punk that it is long lost in the sea of "Fuck Bush", "Save The Animals" bands that convolute the genre. They thrive off being politically incorrect, or incoherant you might say, as they lack a real heavy political stance or affiliation. They make songs that make me want to get up and circle pit. They have that ability...Even tracks off of "Gusto" give me that feeling...As for this album though, it is way too short to be considered a full-length, yet too long to be considered an EP. By the end, I was wanting more, but in all fairness, it delivered...It is a fair follow up to "Eat Your Face"...They did bring tears to my eyes, while simultaneously laughing when they mocked Sucidal Tendencie's classic "Institutionalized". All and all, this album is a good buy for fans and new listeners alike...Even if you absolutely hate this album, I guarantee a fe chuckles.

i really, really, wanted to like this. and when i first leeched it, i listenedt to it like 6x/day...
but good albums, the more you listen to them, the more you find to like.
bad albums, the more you listen to them, the more you find to dislike
shave the planet falls squarely into the latter category.

what fart jokes?

Posted by ConsequentialBanditry on 2006-08-24 19:46:07

I'd agree to the 2nd rate NOFX comparison, to a point. They try to sound poppier, and dumber, if that's possible. The fart and pill jokes tire quickly, but the political bent is the strength of this up and down album. Did they ever release a completely politically motivated album, without the retarded sophmoric songs?

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, August 24, 2006 at 5:56 PM (EDT)

ha you do this for free...and you go to junior college? how do you keep up the hectic schedule?

you're overpaid you douchebag

Posted by otter on 2006-08-24 16:42:47

I bet this album was recorded in the same fashion as "fuck the Kids" by nofx. it didn't take any time to record but it is still awesome. You probably won't like this if you are into animal rights, gay people rights, retarded people rights, MCR, rights toward serious matters or have no sense of humor.

hey Brian do you get paid to write reviews, cuz if you do it's a waste of money.

Hey Anonymous, do you bother reading a site's FAQ, because if you did, asking me this would be a waste of time.

>>>is the work song a fuck you to dropkick murphys or what?

It's a pisstake on the whole working class pride thing. Like, "You're PROUD of your shitty menial job? That's dumb." Pretty hilarious.

Lots of stupid shit on this record but that's par.

Agreed, Dante is rarely, if at all funny. Give it up.

Dante...you are a tool, you're not funny...everyone here thinks you should eat a dick, what kind of gay ass name is "Dante" anyway, if that's your real name then your parents are as fucking clueless as you are

That cover art is hilarious.

Also, even though they can get annoying, Guttermouth are a lot of fun. Incredibly good band name too (especially considering their song content).

this band sucks nuts.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at 12:47 PM (EDT)

I honestly thought this album was better than the last 2 pieces of shit they released.

I love Guttermouth and the first 5 tracks are solid...after that the album is ok. The Steve McQueen song is alright, but sounds like their trying to recapture the glory of High Balls.

Posted by capitalist_pig on 2006-08-23 00:13:02

I'm liking it for what it is--another Guttermouth album. I find them more entertaining than NOFX recently, or at least a lot funnier.

Posted by JayTee on 2006-08-22 23:43:22

Haha! No surprise its gettin low scores. It's not thier best by any means but its fun to blaze through for 20 minutes. This is like Guttermouth's "Group Sex". If you didn't like this band back in the mid nineties, you never will. It's that simple kiddies. Honestly, you have to have something wrong with your brain like me to enjoy "Flacidism".

Yeah this album is shit. Pretty much of par with eat your face. Whats with all the inbetween song banter? it's not even funny at all. Cut that shit out and maybe the album would have been at little tolerable.

My Score:

The sequencing for this thing is terrible:

3 songs from SFAFC in a row:
7: Miami
8: Don’t Lose Touch
9: Unprotected Sex with Multiple Partners

4 songs from ATEC in a row:
10: Sink, Florida, Sink Download
11: You Look Like I Need a Drink
12: Turn Those Clapping Hands into Angry Balled Fists
13: T.S.R.

Seriously, mix them up a little! And nothing from Crimes? Weak sauce. I wonder if the major label had a say in what went onto this thing...

Someone should give Mark Adkins a tv show, or a podcast, something this guy is hilarious. He made me laugh ten years ago, and calling Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance a "Fat Raccoon" mad me le laugh again. This band rules...

Not their best, but an improvement from Eat Your Face, which was an improvement from Gusto.

They're headed back in the right direction.

I feel kinda bad for it, but that "I've got autism!" line at the begining of "Flacidism" always cracks me up.
