I don’t mean to sound bitter nor nostalgic -- but this wasn’t what I signed up for. Seven years ago (has it been that long?), I was happy to wave the New Found Glory flag in defense of easily acceptable pop-punk. That flag was understandably lowered, significantly, come the band’s two most recent releases, 2004's Catalyst and 2002's Sticks and Stones.

With Coming Home, New Found Glory seemed to be promising a return to form. There’s plenty of room in melodic punk for a band to release a crafty, poppy album. What’s regrettable is that New Found Glory decided to avoid this route all-together and instead have released an album of D-List pop jams.

It’s albums like Coming Home that make me even more appreciative of bands like None More Black, who have members coming from more aggressive backgrounds, or the Loved Ones who unmistakably incorporate melody while sounding distinctly more mature than New Found Glory, who themselves is bound to claim a stake on the late-night TV circuit in the coming months.

That’s not to say Coming Home doesn’t have its moments. Songs like "Hold My Hand" had me tapping my foot and nodding my head no matter how reluctantly. Unfortunately, as soon as a moment like that occurs it is normally followed up by a trite number such as "On My Mind." Sure, the album features clean production, polished vocals, and is perfectly presentable in most ways, just not to anyone with taste or experience with genuineness in the bands they choose to love.

Coming Home isn’t what its title suggests -- so what is it? Essentially, it is a collection songs reeking of insincerity and pretentiousness. It fails to re-establish what made New Found Glory worthy of our attention in the first place, while simultaneously failing to contribute to this maturity they seem to have been striving for as of late. It doesn’t sound as though it was written by a group of proven musicians coming to age in the territory they’ve helped to create. Instead, it sounds like an album written by a once noteworthy band who has become lost within the confines they’ve built up around themselves and reeking of the clichés they’ve helped establish. This was the opportunity for New Found Glory to make their fans more than nostalgic for their glory days -- it’s too bad they didn’t go for it.

This album definitely makes up for Catalyst and Sticks and Stones. The people here spit the most hypocritical, stupid bullshit ever.

wow. way, way off the mark with this review. it's different, yes. so was catalyst, and i liked that album even more then this one. i don't want bands to continue with their status quo simply because it's easier. i do wish the pace on coming home would pick up a little bit more often, but the hooks and catchiness are still there. and that's what i like about new found glory.

my god. what is everybody's fucking problem. you all take yourselves way too seriously. it's fucking music. these guys are doing what they love and are making money out of it. you are sitting on a computer and criticising them as if they owe you something. if you dont like the cd then fair enough, but don't abuse it or the band for not making something that suits you. if you think you can do better than do so and stop your bitching, otherwise just shut the fuck up anyway.

    My Score:

after listening to it about 10 times it probably is my least favorite NFG album, but I think its still pretty damn good. the first half is far superior to the second half though, and thats what brings the album down. the last 4 songs are easily the 4 weakest tracks on the album, but track 4 'on my mind' is awesome, one of the best guitar licks they've written, along with one of jordans best vocal patterns.

and no, i'm not in NFG nor am i sleeping with any of them :)

nostalgia isnt what comes to mind when i see/hear new found glory.

more of a disgust, a bad taste in my mouth.. when this band dropped was around the time "punk" started to get popular. and by "punk," i mean fashion.
i think i just threw up a little bit, and the vomit stain on the crotch of my khakis confirms that thought.

    My Score:

wow what a shitty review. you admit in your first paragraph that you haven't really liked NFG since the s/t era, obviously if you can't get past your obstructinist nostalgiatic dickface attitude towards anything they've done this side of 'hit or miss' you aren't going to like any kind of progression or new direction the band, who are now in their mid 20's and have been there/done with the pop punk formula , are going to do.

second, the album isn't trite or pretentious (most overused word ever) as you say. jordans vocals are as powerful and soaring as ever and hes tried to do away with a lot of the whiney/nasally sound that has turned off many peole and pigeoned holed them as a cookie cutter pop punk band. the main riff to 'on my mind' is incredible and the verse vocal pattern is amazing.

while this isnt my favorite nfg cd by any stretch, its still damn solid and shows a progression instead of making catalyst part 2 or a 'return to form' aka regression to what they did when they were teens as you would like to hear.

by the way, i'm 26 and have listed to NFG since 2000 myself so im not some newbie kid or dipshit emo fag looking to defend his poster boys. i'm a fan of good music and great pop melodies and thats what 'coming home' contains.

    My Score:

I've always felt that NFG does excellent, EXCELLENT, fast songs. "Understatement," "Catalyst," "It's Been a Summer" are fantastically loud, Cyrus' drums are played frenetically, and both verses and choruses hooks are huge. In terms of mid-tempo songs, like "You've Got a Friend in Pennsylvania," the songs are much more dependent on how catchy the chorus is (and "YGaFiPennsylvania" is excellent). I think the hookiest chorus NFG has is for "No News is Good News."

Their ballads are alright........... which brings me to this album, "Coming Home." It's 80% ballads. I mean, change is good now and then, but even though every single NFG song has changed a little from another, you can still find lots of fast songs. There are no fast songs on this album.

But it doesn't suck. Anything NFG does is better than anything My Chemical Romance ("The Black Parade," that song is such a piece of dung) or Good Charlotte does.

P.S. - At first I thought "Too Good to Be" was my favorite song, but I realized the chorus sounds like a Baptist church song about God, with the handclaps and stuff. I don't like it anymore, haha.

P.S.S. - We all like "Hold my Hand" because it has a cool piano diddy, a catchy 50s "do do do" thing, a really hooky pre-chorus with chuggy guitars, and an explosive actual chorus. It's a good song. Kill yourself.

    Posted by nellson13 on 2006-09-20 21:35:30

everyone is always dissing on "Hold My Hand" and "It's Not Your Fault!!!!" . sure, they may have gone pussy, but they're not bad songs. maybe they just wanted to try something new. i personally think the album's great.

Why are people talking about "Hold My Hand?"

It's a mediocre to weak song and "It's Not Your Fault" is a whole lot better.

That said, none of this is as good as the stuff they were putting out six years ago. But I like parts of it.

I loved the old stuff, and "Sticks and Stones" was one of my favorite albums when it came out, but Catalyst was dissapointing and this I'm sure after hearing the reviews is probably crap. This band had so much potential and so much fun and energy in their live shows. It's a shame to see them join the list of bands who used to be good...

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at 1:04 PM (EDT)

Ok so its not as good as their old stuff, but still Chad and Jordan have been saying for about a year now that is wasnt like anything they had done before, so bam there goes the quick 2 min 36 seconds songs for a start. Its dare I say their attempt at making a proper "rock" album.

I agree with the guy a few posts down saying how after the first 3 songs it becomes incredibly boring. But then again maybe playing the same 3 chord guitars over a fast drumbeat just got boring for them as well.

Its a bold move by NFG and yes the best song by a mile is Hold My Hand, probably cause its the closest thing to pop punk on the album.

I honestly never saw where all the distaste for Sticks and Stones came from. So they switched up some of their songs, so what. It sounded good. Also, lets not forget the song with the gangs by Bane and What Feeds The Fire. Both great bands. And for the record, Nothing Gold Can Stay is just torture to try and listen to. The production and everything just sounds so unbelievably terrible I can't take it. I do agree though, Catalyst was deffinetly a downfall for the band.

good god this is so bad. i've rarely seen a band far so fall. and i gave 'Catalyst' a 7 for godsake, there were a few strong songs on there. but this? fuckin shit this is awful. i listened to the whole thing waiting for it to start getting some fucking pep, but it never happened. the last song, which is a 'hidden track' is by far the fastest and it's awful too.

    incredibly half-assed and embarrasing.

i really did try to like this. but my efforts failed. i don't care if they are trying something new. i find that great. but it helps if what is new, is also good. the last two albums were also really bland and boring. the new one is just that, but with a different sound. i miss the old days. but these things happen.

    My Score:

I remember a distinct time when every show I wanted to go to had this band called newfound glory opening, like they were pandering for shows. Every fucking show in iowa for 3 months, then 7 months later, they'd find a way onto a closed bill of bands that were the polar opposite them.

I hated them very much. Then, when this chronically opening band who no one liked, and gave everyone a 20 minute 'hey, i never really took a good look at the alley outside this club before, hey, you know, punks dont take enough good walks', next thing I know the media machine has them, and their career band androids. They were the guys who bothered underage girls for their email addresses, and kept me from the headliner.

Now they are not from Iowa, but I would think coming home, wherever it is, would be dismal reality for them to face without the posturing.

    My Score:

Do they even listen to what they record? I still like a bit of pop punk but this is horrible.

Posted by GlassPipeMurder on 2006-09-19 02:14:57

is this worse than Catalyst? i liked some of the songs on that one.

Posted by colin on 2006-09-19 01:49:20

nfg was way better when they were a new found glory.

the self titled was strong but after the first couple songs on sticks and stones they just got progressively worse.

oh well. singing along with the dudes in basements to "2s and 3s" was great, and so they can cash out now while they have a chance. they were never punx, never will be, so there's no sense in arguing about selling out. used to be a pop band, i don't follow them any more, but good luck dudes. gave me some great memories in high school. maybe they'll do the same for some other kids.

"theyve written 50 pop punk songs that probably cant be topped "

I had to give this comment five fucking stars on absurd hilarity alone.

Rick James wasn't lying when he said that Cocaine is one hell of a drug.

    Nice guys...horrendous record.

Seriously, at least Catalyst had a couple medicore tracks.

    Hang it up, guys.

This record rules. Give it a few spins and you'll love it. The title track is sooooo perfect for radio.

I haven't heard this album yet, but I had high hopes for it when I heard two songs and Jordan's voice was less whiney.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at 12:41 AM (EDT)

    this cd is awesome
god forbid a band tries something different
its a lot better than catalyst

and jordans voice is 100x's better

theyve written 50 pop punk songs that probably cant be topped

    so why try?

I can't believe the word "pretentious" was used in a New Found Glory review. This album isn't as bad as it's made out to be, but it ain't no "Nothing Gold Can Stay"

did anyone else think Sticks and Stones was pretty decent? I mean the singles were shitty, but the rest of that album was pretty good if you ask me. anyone second that emotion?

    My Score:

The only song I liked was the first one, "Oxygen." Good hook, solid rock song. The rest of this album is incredibly boring (but at least Jordan's vocals are way better than they've ever been).

goddam, ben_canoley how many reviews did you write this week? if i didn't know any better i'd say you were shooting for staff.

as soon as i saw the score i wanted to rip the reviewer, but he puts up more then a valid argument, maybe i should check the stream before picking up this album

This bloooooows. One uninspired, half-baked pop-rock ballad after the other.

    Their worst album, easy.
