By the time 1999 rolled around, ska was dead in the mainstream. Many bands began to think about breaking up, or at least dropping the ska sound from their repitoire. Others just expanded their sound, to include a lot more influences, while still keeping the ska beat. Put Save Ferris in that catagory. When their 2nd CD "It Means Everything" burst onto the scene in 1997, it was welcomed with open arms. It sounded just like Reel Big Fish, only with a female singer, a HOT female singer. While some people dismissed them as a cheap No Doubt rip-off, Save Ferris was anything but. Vocalist Monique Powell is classically trained, giving SF's songs a certain dignified air, no matter how silly the subject matter. With "Modified", Save Ferris venture into somewhat darker territory then on their previous releases. Sure there are the upbeat pop-punk and ska-pop tunes such as "Turn It Up" and "What You See is What you Get", but there is also some gloomier (by Save Ferris standards) fare. Songs such as "Your Friend" and "Angry Situation" deal with more adult subject matter, and the album closer "Let Me In" could easily be a Sarah McLachlan ballad. It's sort of hard to swallow this change in image, from happy go-lucky ska-punks to serious musicians, but the music is still good, and thats all that matters. From what I understand, a couple of horn players have left the band, and SF is now considering going on without any horns at all. I don't see this as a good thing, as they worked as a ska-pop band. At one point, I had hoped that "Modified" was proof that they still had a lot of good ska-punk to deliver, but I am starting to think that perhaps it's Save Ferris's last, dying gasp. This CD is shit, get "it means everything" Monique is a bitch. Pushed a decent band out of control. i think mo is going solo now but still doing save ferris songs. ". . . but I am starting to think that perhaps it's Save Ferris's last, dying gasp." Just like Gwen Stefani, Monique should take it up the ass till she dies. good cd. I don't care if it's less ska. If they're moving to pop,or whatever, I just hope they can do it good. I listen to lots of Hepcat,Specials and Skatalites. It doesnt mean I cant see the obvious connection to ska in Save Ferris's music. Its not pure, its not JA, but it is pop and pop-punk with ska elements. Thus, it becomes ska-pop. yah, i see no ska in there sound. they have horns. big fucking deal. theyre not ska. listen to some hepcat or the skatalites or some old specials if you want ska. save ferris is a pop band with a hot singer. Remember when Save Ferris was good? Yeah, I don't either. To the dude that mentioned Animal Chin...you fuckin rock! Animal Chin's "Twenty Minutes from Right Now" is one of the top 3 Ska-punk CD's ever, right behind Hello Rockview and Slapstick's Discography. I pull out Animal Chin and listen to it still just about every week. Speaking of 80's flicks, doesn't Monique, on the cover of the album, look like Alley Sheady(or however the hell you spell it, like anyone knows or cares anyway) from the breakfast club, Short Circuit, Maid to order? I'm just sayin' is all. you jackasses who keep talking about ska-punk obviously cannot read. the man who did the review called it ska-POP. Two of my favorite, smaller bands from the mid-90's ska-punk era are Mealticket and Animal Chin. better ska-punk bands include; operation ivy, slapstick, less than jake, the aquabats, mad caddies, mighty might bosstones, skankin pickle, mustard plug, catch 22, voodoo glow skulls, homegrown,....hell i'd rather hear reel big fish before save ferris anyday.- fathead Yeah same no doubt style crap...the singer chick is kinda hot though...thats why im giving this an 8. You want ska-punk? Listen to Choking Victim. how does Save Ferris get booked on the main stage at warped tour 2 fucking years, and the mad caddies play in front of 100 people at 1 in the afternoon? Save Ferris=poop.- fathead God damn it. Every time I see one of my favorite 80's movies (Ferris Bueller's Day Off), I'm forced to remember this worthless, turd-huffing excuse of a band. |
