Happy Hollow has been a grower for me. While Cursive's other post-break-up records, Domestica and The Ugly Organ were immediately striking, this year's release has required a bit more effort. At this point I can say that it is still in its adolescent stages for me, far from being a favorite record or constant listen, so when Cursive played Cleveland a couple months back, I passed. Then I saw they were coming again, this time with a band's whose entire catalogue I have no qualms with: the Thermals. So I figured, "What the hell?" Why not check out the Thermals and see if Cursive's newest material is more moving in the live setting.

I feel like I can't go to shows anymore where beer cans AREN'T being thrown. i saw this show in philly. The thermals and ladyfinger were both pretty weak, in my opinion, and no one in the venue rocked out for either of them. Cursive opened up slow with so-so gigolo off the new album, and a few other songs that offered no immediate energy or impressive musicianship. i was worried, but the show inproved throughout the night as i began to hear songs i recognized and they got more into it. gentleman caller took the cake, but i'm pissed that this guy got to hear sierra and i didn't. There's no emotion to it? Listen to "Rise Up, Rise Up" again. The new Cursive CD is...boring. There's no emotion in it, and the songs don't pick up. haha, i was at the show and with the girl that threw the beer can. yes, she got a stern talking to. score is for the new thermals album. album of the year material. A. - Who the fuck throws a full beer? That's blatant alcohol abuse and a violation of ManLaw. this review is sort of awful. I was going to go to this show, but I had no desire to be crammed into a small room with 450 idiot kids who actually started a mosh pit when Cursive played there a few months ago, I decided to stay home and watch Project Runway instead, which was obviously the better choice. Cursive is an incredible band, and I really wish they'd come back to Columbus so I can actually see them without a lot of driving. "The Radiator Hums" is a gem of a song. The score is for "The Recluse" They played Mothership, Mothership? I am so stoked for this show. |
