In a day and age where style has taken priority over substance, honest albums from honest bands tend to be few and far between. Luckily, there's still a few out there, and the Street Dogs continue to give hope that punk and rock can blend harmoniously and shine through the shitstorm of modern rock and faceless punk.

You all know the story, but I'll give you "Street Dogs for Dummies" version. Frontman Mike McColgan leaves the Dropkick Murphys to become a firefighter, still writes music, and decides he wants to start another band. Initially, it’s just a small project, but hype builds and the Street Dogs become the talk of Boston with nothing more than a demo. They release Savin Hill, and suddenly the hype becomes warranted. The band follows with Back to the World, and begin touring like madmen, including an opening spot on tour with legends Social Distortion. The anticipation grows for the third full-length...

So, where does this leave us? Well, exactly where my recap ended. The best description of Fading American Dream is that it begins EXACTLY where Back to the World left off: pure punk-influenced rock music. No gimmicks, no pseudo-image, no bullshit. Anthem-laced tracks like "Not without a Purpose," "Fading American Dream" and their well-tributed Mung cover of "Fatty" provide that feel-good, fist-pumping spirit that remind us why we listen to punk music, and how it's one of the few music genres that transcend culture and trends.

The Street Dogs have also taken another step in proving they are far from just sloganeering street punks. Stripped-down numbers like "Final Transmission" and "Shards of Life" truly showcase McColgan's revered songwriting abilities, and combined with a cover of Billy Bragg's "There Is a Power in the Union," give the album a far greater feeling of depth and substance. Most noticeably would be the band's more apparent political leanings, and a growing skepticism of the hostile political environment growing in America. Well-documented is McColgan's history of involvement in the first Gulf War, however, a more positive and refreshing support of our countrymen and women abroad, combined with a questionable and discouraging view of the motivating political machine fueling the conflict, are a welcome breath of fresh air.

But there's also fun to be had, after all, this is a Boston band. Raucous tunes like "Tobe Has a Drinking Problem" and "Katie Bar the Door" are perfect additions to any late night of shenanigans and debauchery. With their jubilant choruses of mischief and hooligan-like antics, I'm reminded of my high school years of getting completely loaded on cheap beer, laughing at anything ridiculous, and being anxious to find the next adventure of the evening.

For those of you that have been waiting for your Do or Die part 2, this is it. But it's also not. It's the Street Dogs, and if Mike and company continue to create passionate, fun and inspiring music such as this, I won't be concerned with when I'll find the next Do or Die, I'll be waiting for the next Street Dogs album. In fact, I already am.

    My Score:

Just such an awesome album. Straight up, no bullshit punk, which is refreshing in these times of boys wearing makeup and caring more about their looks then the music their playing.

Hey steve jones the bones, there is fucking nothing wrong with being happy about where u r from. Street Dogs are a great band, this is a great album and not all of their songs are about Boston. I also cant believe u had the guts to put ur email at the end of ur comment

    My Score:

Whoa! This as rockin' as "Savin Hill"! I wasn't so excited about "Back To The World"- it was pretty good but "Savin Hill" is SO good that it definitely paled. This seems like a winner!

This is the best punk release of the last five years.

    My Score:

This album is pretty seriously awesome. It's very loud and boisterous, which makes it fun, but it's also really well written. It's one of those albums which is fun without being stupid and goofy, which is a rare combo.

    My Score:

An absolutely spectacular album! They have equaled the Dropkick Murphys now. Of course not in terms of popularity but in terms of quality.

    First album = 10
    2nd album = 8
3rd album = haven't heard it yet, but i saw 2 weeks ago w/ the souls and i liked what i heard.

If the singer didn't live in LA, maybe they could.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 26, 2006 at 12:41 PM (EDT)

Can these guys claim Boston when they have two guys from Texas in the band?

    Posted by Capitalist_Pig on 2006-10-26 11:41:08

I loved old DKM, but for some reason I could never get into these guys' first two albums. I'm listening to this album online right now, however, and I think I'm gonna have to pick it up. Definitely their best work to date.

I could be completely off, but I felt like with their first two albums were "Mike from DKM's new band," but I think they sound more comfortable with themselves as a band now.

    My Score:

This album is pretty good, I agree with the observation of it being "Do or Die 2".

I also agree that GC5 did Union better.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at 11:16 PM (EDT)

That Power in a Union cover is seriously one of the worst things Ive ever heard. Terrible.

Posted by DiscoFucker on 2006-10-25 13:21:30

"its so weird, erik seems to fit in perfect with what the ratchets are doing, and same can be said of steve with the rebels"

I know. Pull the ol drummer switch....kind of.

Posted by JerryCola on 2006-10-24 21:07:29

Waterpoo must be a joke account...

how could someone complain about not hearing Ole and then say they played too many old songs.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 5:37 PM (EDT)

    Waterpoo:

How can a band be too loud?? Wear earplugs or get out of the front row d-bag.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 2:54 PM (EDT)

souls old stuff is better asswipe

street dogs are the best live band around besides the briggs

Posted by waterpoo on 2006-10-24 14:43:26

i saw this band last week with the bouncing souls. they were too loud. they seemed all non-organized and garbage-like. i don' tknow why people like them.

even the souls let me down. they didn't even play ole, and they played too much old stuff.

clarification: "There is Power in a Union" was written by folk/protest hero Joe Hill, not Billy Bragg.

this album, with the "we're from boston, and we are from the street, da na na, na na na"

    disgusts me to no end.

first time i have been disgusted by a band in a really long time because of the songs they actually wrote

for some reason that song disgusts me as much as davey havok does

Posted by sciulli on 2006-10-24 03:32:04

I've never heard these guys before. I'm listening to the previews on iTunes and they sound A LOT like the Bouncing Souls. Not a bad thing. I might pick this release up.

I'm seeing these guys on Wednesday and I can't wait to hear "Not Without A Purpose" live. This is definitely the best shit they've ever done.

    My Score:

I picked this up after the show on thursday, and I agree that it's the best work they've ever done. I'm actually listening to it right now, right in the middle of "Final Transmission." It's a late entry but it'll be in the top ten albums of the year.

My favorite part is in "Katie Bar the Door" where the following occurs

"Oh, they're singing another union song... YOU'RE GODDAMN RIGHT I AM!"

One of the consistantly great live bands out there right now. My favorite DKM stuff was with Mike McColgan anyway, so it made perfect sense that the Street Dogs would be just as good, if not better and to me, I'm right. I see them whenever I can, can't wait for the new album
