Did this guy miss the fact that the band was going for a theatrical album? Don't smudge your guyliner boys. This shit is fuckin awful. Score is for haircuts worse than their music. ALL OF U FUCKERS WHO COMMENT ON MCR LIKE THAT GET A FUCKING LIFE! Some people have different taste in bands, and to me, my chemical romance is the best fucking band in the world...But thats just me. all u motha f*ckers who don't likee this shiit y u wastin ur tiime puutttinnn them&their fans down....get a liffee or gooo to hell!!!! score is for user indianna - this review summed up in words what i've been trying to say for a year and a half now. i used to be completely enamored by mcr when i heard three cheers for sweet revenge, not because it was the popular thing to do (and i was in seventh grade, so listening to music for the actual musical content was rare), but just because i could listen to songs of theirs over and over again and i'd get chills every time. they are so rocken cool! i love their song the black parde hahaha! they think they're Queen! how cute... hey i love this song it is really kewl but kind of sad i guess ok well bye Eh. This album is fun. Sure, it has no real substance, but that doesn't make it suck. It makes the people who produced it suck. But, hey, I'd rather listen to this album than get poked in the eye with a sharp stick. Seriously, what's with MCR fans and saying that their music saved their life? This album is meh. Teenagers is catchy, the beginning of Black Parade or whatever the fuck it's called is kind of cool. Mostly mediocore, I could find better shit, I could stand some of this shit. Anyone on here telling someone to like it or hate it is a douche, people have different opinions on music, get the hell over it. I have to give my kudos to them, they are still a good band. but it seems that fame has gone to their heads. The sound didn't change much. More guitar and a bit more slow songs... To each their own. "Seriously, what's with MCR fans and saying that their music saved their life?" Dear person below me, ok ive had it!! u mother f*ckers need to stop HATING on every good band!!!u have no mother f*cking clue what good music is!!! My Chemical Romance is BETTER THAN U!!!! id like to hear u do an abulm like this!!! its HARDER THAN IT LOOKS!! pay attenion here u f*ckers!stop trying to f*cking FORCE UR OPIONIONS ON THE PPL WHO LIKE My Chemical Romance!!!! i love this band along w/ some others an d if u dont like it F*CK U!!!!!!!!!!!!! fuck emo; i love that to everyone who does not like this band/album: fantastic record. colin, you're a douche. f**k!! the 1st album did rock but this one is really awful!! MCR will never have a better future in the music industry if they continue the kind of music they had on "The Black parade"..they really sound bad and only high school bitches can listen to their annoying music..i don't like this one. Ok 1st of all this album rocks 2nd mcr kick ass 3rd of all their concerts are amazing!! so all u hater go 2 hell..... Seriously, what's with MCR fans and saying that their music saved their life? i didnt like them but this album got me into them my chemical romance saved my life and i love it!!! my chemical romance i s the best thing ever!u guys rock!i luv u guys! Not great, but i like it. omg me n my friends luv them with a firey, burning passion all their albums r just totally amazing and the black parade completely topped it off n the songs r so catchy its great :DD ok, I love mcr. I am going to see them in may but that is so far away for know i'll just listen to them on my mp3 player. Lip rings look COOL!!! This band is a fucking joke. There is nothing that sets them apart from anything else. I hate this psuedo-emo dog shit. damn. you people make GayRudeBoysUnite look smart. i fucking love you guys. insperation i loveeeeeeeeeeeee everthing about this album. my favorite songs are "teenagers", "cancer", and "famous last words". Oh yeah, here's my score. Also I just want to add that it's very easy to pay the shit out of my chem, but remember that they actually took a huge leap of faith and it's paid off. Geez, a bit harsh! My Chem deserve more kudos for making an album where I find it hard to pick out my faves, cos they're all so good. Come on! Who doesnt find Dead's lalalas infectious and entertaining? The concept of the album isn't only about illness, it;s about losing someone you love, it's about death, it's about regret. And I think anyone could take that seriously, while listening to some kickass tunes from a band who cares about what they write about. Leftover Crack! yeah that's a good band. pay no attention to cadavermine. and one more thing,Colin,Billy Corgan is a god,so watch yourself,he may strike you down. I never liked MCR,but this is a decent album,.With a release like this they may actually stand a chance of being around for a while.I'm not even really a fan of them, but I love the whole new arena rock sound, they'll never be Queen, but if you're gonna follow in someone's footsteps ,it might as well be Queen. oh yeah and honestly if you got nothing good to say about My Chemical Romance then dont bother wasting your time moaning about how shite they are. that is just really sad. this review is crap, its completely wrong. I agree with MrTimmerz in the fact that MCR has gotten good reviews on mass media, but MCR is commercially-directed; these guys are not true punk artists to the eyes of hardcore punk rock fans, and I kinda share that belief. I mean, these guys are acting, at least in this album, as kids that strum guitars and sing lyrics deserving of boy bands, unlike their preceding album. This is the idea they should avoid if they don't wanna end in oblivion by the punk fans. They should go back to their speedy ways of Three Cheers and be more aggressive on the lyrics, whether based on stories or not. You're an idiot for liking mcr. I don't think much of Colin either. HE HATES COHEED! I have several points to make on the stupidity that the writer is spreading around. Cutting short with their desire of merging N'Sync-like lyrics and vocals w/punk rock, as well as tuning up with bands like Atreyu, Ill Niño and legendary band The Offspring will do enough to boost MCR's musical quality. They have the talent, all they have to do is make the fuckin' most outta it.... How can you people say this band is good? MCR is so fucking lame. Well! to tell you the truth i found nothing wrong with the CD i loved it... sooooooo i seriously don't c where any of you are coming from. Mcr, truly not one of the greates band ever, I find this album, strangely good, although i agree it does as you suggest have all the qualities of some awesome sing-along with me I am mass produced even without the makeup and 'emo' hairstyles type music to it (although they seem to be ripping off Queen/the Offspring an awful lot). but thats what popular music is, and does. the black parade wasn't as horrible as the review [kudos by the way on that writing..i almost forgot my own opinion] makes it out to be&& maybe their sound is alittle 'done' but what works works mcr is NOT one of the greatest bands of all times. gerard is not a lyric god and if this makes you angry then FUCK YOU! I dont even get why you people even bother writting this stuff coz it is all lies! mcr is one of the greatest bands of all time! this album is one of the best albums i have ever heard. they have real good beats and amazing lyrics! gerard is a lyric god [btw]! so what is the point. half the poeple on this site disagree coz they no mcr rocks. so shut up and write about something that is important and not making people angry! [screw yooh] This album sucks!!! this album was very good. catchy songs. very. this whole album is good. there is like 1 song that could be thrown out && put a different one in it. this whole album is about going though a hard time && overcoming it. i like this one. call me stupid, call me anything you want. i love my chemical romance. they are amazing. you know I don't know why I even bother looking at news or reviews on here anymore because some(not all) of you inconsiderate people on here just flame on the bands!!!Seriously it's getting old!!! If you don't like the band then why bother reading their news or reviews? It's so pointless!!!but wait no you'd rather just piss people off that really love the band right?have some respect. I don't care for some bands too but I also don't look up info and news about them so I can write in their comments and say well they suck!.. blah blah blah. It's rude and disrespectful to the people who really like them.I myself Love MCR to death and I think they have worked very hard to get where they are now!I have all of their albums AND I love them all. I've seen them live twice also and they were great! If you absolutely hate them, then that's your opinion but we don't need to hear about it.And I don't need to hear people say" well you obviosly have no taste in music if you like (band's name)" Everyone has different a different taste in music and is entitled to like what they want. So people don't need other people telling them what's music and what's not.If you like a certain type of music and think it's MUSIC then it is to you and no one should tell you different .MCR is music to me!So I am proud of their new album and I think it is absolutely amazing!! this cd is awsum! whoever thnks differnt, well u obviously dont know what real music is! black parade, teenager, and mama are effin sweet! so yeah.. Open quesiton to colin: how does comparing MCR to greenday give u a credible musical opinion? Talking bout Green Day. They suck, they ruined themselves with American Idiot. The old stuff ruled. Goodness me there's a lot of prejudice people on here. I'll admit the review was well written with a pretty good vocabulary but being a musician I think this album is a work of musical genius. Not everyone can come up with an entire album full of catchy riffs and outstanding structure. Sure there's not a lot of depth to the lyrics but thats not what everyone listens to music for. I personally think Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen are the most boring people on earth. I could think up their song structures in my sleep, but they do have good lyrics. So to each his own, and I love everything about this album. Especially the theatrical elements. Plus I was raised on musicals. "the black parade" is not the best album of mcr... I better like the first album of my chemical romance.... But "mama" is a very cool song..... Www. Rasmusgirlfree2. Skyblog. Com "While it may not be a more important story than the one Green Day was trying to tell with American Idiot, MCR somehow manages to make a much more entertaining one." That was a pretty good review. But after reading it, I think you should have given it less than 2 and a half stars. If you hate this record as much as you say, then give it only one star. You dont have to give it a minimum of 2 just because its MCR. MCR is not emo. I don't even know why you bother reviewing albums on this site. It's like those websites that say they sell "punk, ska, hardcore, oi and emo" cds or clothing. "as an impartial observer, i find this alllll very amusing... reminds me of when i was a teenager and everyone was arguing over "ennema of the state." i'm pretty sure most of you won't give a care over MCR in a few years, and looking back this'll all sound so silly." I still like you colin... Open quesiton to colin: how does comparing MCR to greenday give u a credible musical opinion? Theatrics are great, i mean, look at alice cooper! now that's badass theatrics! but the problem i have with MCR is they're using the theatrics to distract us from BLAND songs... at least blink182 had a good backbeat... Open quesiton to colin: how does comparing MCR to greenday give u a credible musical opinion? as an impartial observer, i find this alllll very amusing... reminds me of when i was a teenager and everyone was arguing over "ennema of the state." i'm pretty sure most of you won't give a care over MCR in a few years, and looking back this'll all sound so silly. this is a fantastic album, no butts.. and colin you sound like a music reviewer who never made it to a publisher Good review. I don't agree with it, but it was well written and opinionated. It was the exact opposite review of the Alternative Press review. The person who reviewed this album in AP had their nose so far up this bands ass it was ridicluous... Oh and please enlighten me on the 'meaningful message' that American Idiot conveys for years to come, cause last time I checked, American Idiot was a concept album about a chap called the Jesus of Suburbia, NOT a political statement that most people make it out to be "I've been going to punk shows for the past 15 years (my first was Descendents)" I don't think your review is good. It's going to be pretty amusing when Hanna Montana out sells these geeks when sales come in next week... I loooove every single track on this album!!!!!! The video for that first single hits every "I've seen this in 1,000 rock videos before" button known to man. What is with the singer's facial expressions? I disagree with colin. I have been arguing with him on this board (I have two previous comments). I think his review is unfair. I looked at his website and think he's a bit pretentious. That all being said, I really like the guy. He's funny. Some of his reactions have been funnier than the comments he's replying to and he's taking a beating from some of these people in good stride. "go kill yourself, colin." Extremely well-written review, even if I don't agree with it. I really couldn't care less of this band, but really, that chorus for that one song where in the video he's preaching at a funeral, you can't deny. It's quite the epic chant. As a whole, the album is pretty bland and pretentious in terms of the music, but you have to admit, the production is incredible. It sounds extremely crisp and clear. So yeah, score is for the production. concept albums kick ass This band eats testicles like there's no tomorrow. I wasn't sure how this album was going to sit wih me. I dimissed it upon first listening, but then I grew to like it. I know that their fans suck (for the most part) but the album is pretty good. It's catchy and has really good moments. i love this album Hey, I need some help. To This Anonymous Person: Okay my comments are all failing. My god you MCR lovers are retarded. Go find some fucking talent. Oh wait, you probably listen to Panic! at the Disco as well. I feel bad for you. My god you MCR lovers are retarded. Go find some fucking talent. Oh wait, you probably listen to Panic! at the Disco as well. I feel bad for you. i'm sure its been stated (because there are way more replies than i care to read right now), but if you've written a review of this album and it doesn't speficially mention Queen or Pink Floyd, you have no business reviewing this album. i'm sorry colin, but you have no business reviewing this album. yes, american idiot is a very strong place to start making comparisons (especially if you begin with the single), but there are so many other influences that are more strongly apparent than that one, that to not have mentioned them shows this band has actually gone over your head as a music reviewer and deserves far more credit than you're giving them. from a production and arrangement stand-point alone, they've excelled not only above other bands of their genre, but even american idiot. the complexity of the arragemnets and layering is far more interesting than anything on american idiot. all that being said, i'm not saying i like the record, i'm just pointing out that this record has its merit and deserves to properly reviewed, which in my opinion you have failed to do. So I guess that anonymous guy should "cave in (my) fucking head" Yeah, he's a winner ... My god you MCR lovers are retarded. Go find some fucking talent. Oh wait, you probably listen to Panic! at the Disco as well. I feel bad for you. Go suck shit! MCR rocks balls! I fucking luv them, and if give them any more crap I'm gunna cave in your fucking head. response to various comments that probably don't deserve it. dude, if you're too tough, go stream the new Converge CD already. "my chemical romance worked hard" "I know this is a critique but theres no need to be so harsh my chemical romance worked hard to make this album and try to keep their fans happy." To Damnitsderek: I don't understand what you mean? I'm just trying to say that you shouldn't put something in a certain group when it's not right. We need a "Most Controversial Review of the Week" feature in Navel-Gazing. There's nothing worse than an educated, well spoken, screamo fan. We need a "Most Controversial Review of the Week" feature in Navel-Gazing. "Your review is unprofessional and biased. You're so punk." Well its true when you write a review you should look at the bands strengths and weaknesses. However if you review a band that you dislike in the first place its obvious your review is going to be bias against them. Tell us colin which artists do you like and have you reviewed any of their albums? If you have I'm sure the reviews will be singing the artists praises basically just because you like them. I know this is a critique but theres no need to be so harsh my chemical romance worked hard to make this album and try to keep their fans happy. kudos to you for giving an honest review on this record. To Damnitsderek: I don't understand what you mean? I'm just trying to say that you shouldn't put something in a certain group when it's not right. I had the displeasure of seeing this album performed on television. You're defending My Chemical Romance from being pop by saying Evanescence is pop? To Vek21: Are you saying that out of every band that you like none has ever made a crappy music video? I mean come on, most music videos today suck on some degree but my God don't ever compare m.c.r. to Marilyn Manson. And I don't know what you’re talking about when you say that this album sounds like the last album because it's taken a completely different turn. For one, all of the people who have never heard this album yet say it sucks based on who m.c.r. WERE, do not make any sense at all. And like what someone wrote before, it's not possible that most of you heard the album because it just came out, so don’t say you have. You have no right to be commenting on this at all because you have nothing to back up your statement. After listening to this album, I will basically say that this album is pretty much the same as the last album with a tiny bit of change. It follows the whole dark premise writing album that the last one has, the guitars & drums are still giving you a poppy type beat to have you stay a tiny bit interested and the vocals also still have the catchy type dark choruses that Gerard was known for in the last album. What does this mean? That no matter how many people want to say it is over produced, or how many people love MCR, you have to understand that there is still no progression and no change...what? oh wait the rock opera idea that Queen put on is now on this album so we should give MCR a tiny bit of credit saying that they did change? Fuck no! It is easy for a band to take a style that already existed and mimmick...My advice is that if you like this album, great good for you because you found something that interests you and suggest that your friends (who probably listen to this nonsense) that they buy this album and for the people who want some new movement, a new style, a new era...keep searching because MCR will not EVER give you something that someone has not already done better. And please if we want to take it also to music videos, please remember that the Black Parade Music Video is just a sham of a Marilyn Manson video adding they gay poppy sound to it....that's all... "That word, "close-minded"? I do not think it means what you think it means. Hey MCR, Pink Floyd called. They want their concept back. To Scruffy- "I think that is the most close minded comment on this whole page!" I don't know, listened to it twice and it seems a lot better than their last album. Their new drummer is much better and the songs seem more interesting. Referring to me? I don't read AMG reviews. Way to entirely rip off All Music Guide's review. O.K. I sat down last night and actually listened to the entire album. Besides the fact that they stole 80% of the guitar work from Queen and the intro song reminds me vaguely of a track off "The Wall", I guess it is the best this band could have possibly done. After releasing only one big "pop" album you gotta figure that they felt the need to be "taken seriously" And while this CD may stand the test of time for a) People 15 and under b) People that love 'pop' music, I have faith that people that have a legitimate good taste in music will brush this off as exactly what it is, an over produced pop album that will sweep the Grammys. And when that happens odds are I won't be watching. "I could never take these guys seriously again" i think this is actually an excellent review. after listening to the stream once i can honestly say i feel the same way. i could never take these guys seriously again The review isn't that far off. I think he was a little too harsh on the album because I happen to like it more than he did, but that's just taste. I, too, heard similarities to American Idiot, and I mentioned it to someone before even reading this review. The orchestration and arrangement of some of the songs definitely evokes the Green Day album. Nobody said the band sounds like Green Day. Just that the production of the album is similar. And it definitely is. You guys need to stop putting words/thoughts into people's mouths/minds. Just because the reviewer didn't like it doesn't mean he didn't give it a fair chance and definitely doesn't say anything about his opinions of "punk". "your hands play cds?" I think what makes this review so awkward Collin is that it seems as though you really haven't decided, at the point you wrote this, whether you like the album or not! I seems like during the review you are continuously jumping back and forth on whether you like it or not! So maybe next time just make a single opinion and stick with it! I think that was a fine review and made sense in the context about what he was talking about. I think people should complain some more, it's helpful! And you can't look at that marching skeleton without laughing. I can't even make time to listlen to this album because i am pretty sure that someone will have to pry Senses Fail's new cd out of my hands before i listen to something else! I can't even make time to listlen to this album because i am pretty sure that someone will have to pry Senses Fail's new cd out of my hands before i listen to something else! That exactly what you did in your review, colin. You're so punk. the only way this band can improve is to break up "omg i luv this band and u guys dont no anything about good music" It wasn't a surprise to see MCR panned on here, especially by the same guy that reviewed Three Cheers. I have to say I like the album. I'm not sure how long it will stay in my rotation, but for right now, I'm pretty impressed. Most people here seem to have a poor opinion of MCR, but I respect the fact that they've now released three albums, and every one of them has been significantly different. I think to just compare this record to American Idiot is cutting it short. As someone else mentioned, many of the tracks sound like they were listening to Queen when they made this. Another track had a borderline rockabilly feel, there was some country influence, and some other classic rock influence throughout. There is even the call and repeat style between the vocals and instrumentals that you'd find on a blues album. If nothing else, it shows an appreciation (from the band) for a wide variety of music, and the tenacity to try to incorporate many of these sounds, and really go against the grain of what made them so popular on the last album. Again, maybe this won't last in my rotation over the next couple years, but right now it's sounding really good, and it's just a shame that so many people are cutting it down based on the simple fact that MCR is popular with the Hot Topic kiddies, and that's just not cool. alright, i just listened to the CD. and if you haven't heard it, you can't say anything about it! despite their track record, this is like a completely different band. Colin's review is pretty intellectually lazy. Read the NY Times article from Monday instead: omg i luv this band and u guys dont no anything about good music There is a new Aiden cd coming next week! colin you listen to some really terrible music "i think what i enjoy most about the comments so far is the mini-flame war going on about green day and punk. you crazy kids keep trying to classify what is and isn't punk and people will start catching on and start calling you hypocrites on the whole "punk is about being against structure and the system" argument, you know." I expected to hate this album and I actually wouldn't have even listened to it at all if not for the single. I dug the single and decided to check it out, and my hateful heart was mildly impressed with the album. It's still not great and I don't think I'd buy it, but I like it far more than I expected to like any MCR album. i heard the new single at work and found it painful to listen to, so i stood in the way of the signal and made the radio have static for the rest of the song haha good review, i really find this band overrated. Then again, this is a website for punk music and MCR are most definately not a punk band so they're most likely to get slated on here anyway. Does anyone know if polyphonic spree are guesting in the bridge of the single? If not, what a blatant rip. No idea why the review is panned - who gives a turd about individual songs anyway with this band. I loved how you found a way to bring Michael Jackson into this and made a gay pedophile joke. Your wit and depth amaze me. Teach me? the singer looksreally overweight in that parade outfit, and his bad bleach job isn't helping, he's like the white michael jackson....if michael wasn't already white. I agree somewhat with the reviewer on this one, but I probably enjoyed it a bit more than he did. On the one hand, it's waaay too theatrical. I mean, I get that it's their thing or whatever, but here it just seems to hinder the musicianship. The songs themselves have heart, but with all the bells and whistles, it's a little hard to hear them beat. And on the other hand, it's a fun, catchy, energetic, if not forgettable, album, good for a drive home from work or two. Not a great record, but certainly better than 90% of what everyone calls "emo". reviews like this are why i hate this website; not only the review, but the comments below. this site is nothing more than the pitchfork of punk rock. Fuck this shit. Where's the Converge review. This is such a fuckin horribly biased review it reeks of a previous MCR hater that just can't let go of their idiotic preconceptions. to the guy who is 32 and still listens to this kind of crap: i feel sorry for you Just wanted to point out this little gem right here i think what i enjoy most about the comments so far is the mini-flame war going on about green day and punk. you crazy kids keep trying to classify what is and isn't punk and people will start catching on and start calling you hypocrites on the whole "punk is about being against structure and the system" argument, you know. Actually, Billie Joe is a very, very good guitar player, he just doesn't do a whole lot with it in Green Day's songs anymore. But listen to what he could do on 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, and that was almost 20 years ago. "gerard can sing more than 1 octave. billie joe cant. (to the reviewer: i think i am completely qualified to say gerard is a good singer; i have a 4 octave range and if i may say so, i can use it properly." You guys are all cotton headed ninny muggins! Wait a second...someone anonymously flame-baiting on the internet? No way! "Punk isnt about how much skill you have...shit, MUSIC isn't about how much skill you have. It's about how creatively you can apply the gifts that you posess." First things first, ignore the username. I signed up for this site way back when I was obsessed with Green Day. I'm not any more, so let's move on. Billie Joe may suck at guitar, but no one is going to talk shit on the rhythm section of the band. Also, they write really good fun, loud, angry songs. They know what they are doing. Billie Joe can't sing, but he has something that is infinitely more important in punk rock: charisma. If you want to impress someone with your 4 octave vocal range, I'm sure the american idol crowd would love to see you apply it to christmas classics. anyone think that their mtv single sounds like airosmith Oh and the best part about this website is that in like ten minutes someone will be quoting what I just said and putting it in italics and then bashing it! I am so excited and i can't wait for the first one so they can make themselves look like an idiot! This website just makes me laugh harder every week, and i am seriously laughing right now! You know what makes it really funny is if you go to the bottom of the page and read the whole message board, word for word working your way to the top! Then you read the review cause by that time you have all this opinion stewing around in your brain! Here let me just highlight(which is a huge understatment) what has been said below: The album is definately OK... nothing worth going out and buying. Can definately see Pink Floyd's The Wall influence as well as Queen. But definately the album will do well because of all the little "pop-punkers" that haven't been introduced to good music yet. The lyrics are pretty good, but the music is not great - too broadway-esq. The best thing about the album is the cover art, and thats pretty much it. "Hey, we want to do that. But without any honesty or sentiment involved. And outfits -- we need outfits." Clarification: Andrew WK kicks ass. i hate punks. anybody who can mistake green day's monkey-worthy guitar playing for good and meaningful has their head up their ass. This album is good. If you hated their old stuff, give this a try with open ears. In the grand scheme of things, this album is probably very important. This might be the first bullshit emo band that finally took the chance to grow into something...better. While still managing to keep their fanbase. "i guess when dookie came out and the boys all had green and blue hair with ripped t-shirts, that was just, uh, punk?" Re: the "why does [Colin]...spread bad shit about [this record]" comment: "This kind of music is lol. Great review." Don't insult AWK's music! He never did anything to you, or anyone for that matter. sounds like Andrew WK with a sissy on vocals. I don't think that comment was serious. it couldn't have been. holy crap that's the best comment ever. the multitude of inaccuracies as far as your idea of art criticism as well as your inability to punctuate or use proper spelling and grammar put your age around 13 or 14. ffs look everyone is entitled to their opinion n shit but colin knew wot he was getting into when he posted this review i mean mcr fans are gonna buy the album obviously so why does he have to spread bad shit about it anyway whoever wants to listen to the album can go on the website www.theblackparade.com and listen to the album for free see no wasted money or woteva and then people can just make their own assumptions of wot they think then no mcr fans get hurt or upset because music taste is personal and how would colin feel if we all dissed his music tastes see no one likes to bet told their fav bands new album is complete shite so coiln keep your reviews to yourself and let people just listen to the album online if they want to and if not then dont fucking listen to it! god no ones forcing anyone to listen to it but just because some people don't like mcr doesnt call for them to go spreading shit you know? after all mcr are only human and have tried their best to give their fans what they want with this album no ones perfect and sure people have different tastes but i wouldnt dream of reviewing an album of a band i didnt particularly like because thats just pointless and so was this review! nuff sed I haven't really liked mcr's stuff in the past but i really like what i've heard of this one I don't think anyone here's bashing the band because they're trendy. Nirvana was trendy, and they're mostly loved. i think ppl should respect these guys a lil bit more...at least they try to do new stuff...and actually its better than their older albums.i enjoy some songs on this cd.. The aesthetic attached to this record is enough to make me glad I will never ever hear it. Who makes an album cover like that (complete with a new mascot for the 14 year old goth crowd) and actually expects to be taken seriously? this album is so great. their best work yet. These guys need to get over themselves. fuck this shit. *than "Everyone who stands up for this CD has either very little exposure to music or is younger than 15 years old - no offense." "um, i'm 32, have a degree in musical composition, and stand behind this record." I will never listen to this cd because their other ones suck and id ont like them ne ways but i have to say "Everyone who stands up for this CD has either very little exposure to music or is younger than 15 years old - no offense." On the superfluous topic - its usage is more of an idiom. It doesn't necessarily have to be "extra" to something; that's the dictionary def., but over the years, it's become more of just a quick label. It work better than using "extraneous" to describe music, too. We all listen to at least one or two weird/poppy/screamo/guilty pleasure bands. If you can admit the flaws of these bands and still enjoy it on your own thats fine. For me, one of those bands is 311, I rarely listen to them, but can take a certain level of enjoyment from a song like "Creatures (For a While). But to play guilty pleasure music in front of a crowd or your friends and have someone say "what is this shit?" or "change the song" is just a failure of taste. When a screamo song comes on randomly or a horrible rapping 311 song comes on, I'm embarrased for myself. Keep it in the headphones. Let this shit never reach the public arena. The best music can be enjoyed by a collection of people with biased tastes and open minds. This was a good review. i think this should have got 3 stars, maybe 3 1/2. It's quite a step up. I streamed this off AOL, and its not my thing, but yeah if you like it, so what. Social Distortion suck. If you want good music with make up, I would suggest Satanic Warmaster. I don't really have anything against these new MTV "Punk" bands, but these guys just aren't good. At least New Found Glory or All American Rejects write catchy songs. My Chemical Romance just sound sorta like poop. If for nothing else its interesting so...about the music itself... This is the most pretentious, elitist, website I have ever seen. Honestly, I grew out of the "you're not hip and wise enough about our scene" shit in high school. Not, that I have even heard the album yet. I just logged on to see reviews if I should pick it up. But holy crap... these message boards are a throw back to when I was 13 years old. Snobism is the oppisite of the messsage the music sends. Grow up and support the scene. Even if you don't like the band it could be worse, these kids (in the band) could have finished college and instead of writing about how "gay" you think they are, you could be getting them coffee. Now whats worse, a "concept album" or more suits? "extraneous" would be more precise. Something has to be superfluous in relation to something else. Superfluous means "extra" in most usages, which means it has be to extra with respect to an established quantity or degree. shut up you fukin fagg0ts this band ruels and u dont kno anything about gud music P.S. Superfluous wasn't used incorrectly. Lol. It's often used in junction with superficial, or close in meaning. Music that is "superfluous" has too much going on at the same time. I love this album. It's just such over the top ridiculousness I can't even resist it I'm really impressed by the new Converge song "Orphaned." Probably best song on the CD. Fantastic review. Hit the nail on the head like a muafucka! Score is for the review. The Nerve Agents also wore makeup and they are quality. So lets not blame appearences for subpar music. incorrect usen of 'superfluous' - unbalanced review; immature; and short-sighted. punker-than-thou types love this review, they will also be NASCAR fans in 5 years. I think more people make fun of this band because they suck. Not because they wear makeup. Mike Ness wore makeup and I like Social D. Gerard Way bleached his hair to more resemble a "character" from this albm, no? Which implies that he at least feels that image is important to the band and this album, oh, and the fucking music. I like it. I agree with some bits of the review, in the fact that it is a pop rock album, but most mainstream is. On the other hand I did laugh at the first minute of "Mama" but the chorus attempts to save it. This kind of music is lol. Great review. i like the album, and i didn't like any of their previous efforts. i do respect that they are changing up their sound and trying something different, much like thrice. you know the next fall out boy and hawthorne heights albums are going to sound like their last ones, just more "mature" What's the point of reviewing this album on this website? This is a good site but you guys have the worst reviews in the world because you're all so closed-minded and biased. I don't mind that you dislike the album but all the reviewers can muster up is that they don't like guys wearing eye liner. This review's actually really good. Whilst I hate MCR and all the grandiose, meaningless shit they spew forth, I've got to commend Colin for not attempting to bash the hell out of them. This is just straightforward, detached criticism, which is basically what the ideal music review should be. Sure, it's a negative review, but it's not like he's going "Zomgz, what a bunch of fag0rtz, they fuckin suk". More like "What a bunch of immature deadbeats, who seem to be belittling a serious disease that affects millions of people worldwide through the medium of trite pop songs". I luv MCR and everything you do.. I believe they are the best band ever and its ok if you bash me.. I dont care.. But i luv the album and the band and no matter what anyone says i always will. I just love how this is compared to Green Day like they are this great, ultimate punk band, who is currently doing a collaboration with U2?! U2! i dont doubt that this cd sucks ass, but this review is horrible. a piece of shit review for a piece of shit cd... i guess it's fitting Best line: This record also sounds like the band listened to American Idiot and took Rob Cavallo aside and said, "Hey, we want to do that. But without any honesty or sentiment involved. And outfits -- we need outfits." And I said, "What the fuck are Selective Seretonin Reuptake Inhibitors?! lets be frank, they suck the sweat from dead mans balls. shut up! no, you shut up! someone review fucking red scare fest. i was way too blackout drunk to remember anything decent. someone dooooooooooo it! I love when the reviewer has to combat the comments on their shitty review, and this was a shitty review. "it's like a circle jerk of alpha-consumer teenagers who don't yet realize they're a demographic." So this isn't a politically meaningful record like Green Day's American Idiot? So what? Not many records are or even try to be. This record, apparently is about cancer, not the current state of affairs involving the war. Colin, I'm only confused about one thing...why did you give this a 5? I didn't really see you mention anything that you liked about the CD in the review, so why did this get a 5 instead of, say, a 3? The review's well-written and all, it just doesn't seem to correspond to the score. joeg- yeah, mcr is stupid, we all know it, they know it. Who listens to this shit...honestly. I haven't checked out the whole album yet, but I've heard the single. 'Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge' grew on me as a kind of fun, guilty pleasure that was easily disposable. However, this album is coming off as an attempt by the band to be taken seriously and I highly doubt this release is going to have anything redeeming. Converge kick ass. I have not heard this album yet, so I cannot say whether or not I like it. However, I cannot take this review seriously because it is blatently obvious from the get-go that the reviewer was determined to hate this CD. The majority of the review consists of him stating that he hates the theatricality of the band, rather than discussing the ups and downs of the music, songwriting and lyrics on the album. That was cute. Now, Its time for a real review. I like this album a lot from listening to the AOL Stream. Queen and Bowie influence is definitely there. Weird that there's not a Converge or Sparta review today... we all knew this review was coming... american idiot is a terrible album by a terrible band. If have to hear "when september ends" or whatever that song is again I will have to start shooting people from a watchtower. This dude is an asshole.. Straight up, at leats what is happening is different from everything you hear now. Critics suck, dont hate... where is this dudes band, has anyone ever even heard of them, does it even exist, and would it even compare to any of the shitiest of MCR's worst songs. How does this record get slammed then get 2.5 stars? This is the best writing I've ever seen in a Punk News review. It's intelligently written, totally fair, and I think the author's assertions are dead on. Finally! Keep up the good work! OMG U USED BIG WURDS!!11 SO NOT PUNX!!!11 I'm no MCR fan, but this review is very biased. Okay, it sucks...it's a joke, we get it...but WHY? It's not descriptive enough about the music; it just criticizes the band's politics. why does Colin always review the shitty cds? makes me wonder if he's a closet fan since he seems to enjoy reviewing these cds so much.. either that or he wants to up his punk cred, so he picks on these type of bands. i hate this album but the review is well written and sums up how i feel about this cd Colin, I'm only confused about one thing...why did you give this a 5? I didn't really see you mention anything that you liked about the CD in the review, so why did this get a 5 instead of, say, a 3? The review's well-written and all, it just doesn't seem to correspond to the score. Hmmm, someone here didn`t want to like this, am I right ... the reviewer comes oof kinda arrogant ... I think this album isn`t half abd if you take it as what it is ... Compulsion to sound verbose? you wouldnt perhaps mean "Really really wants to use lots of words"? what a shit review. sounds like some kid with a thesaurus and a compulsion to sound verbose. I actually disagree with the reviewer. I have streamed the entire album, and while it might not be revolutionary, it still is a very good album, and I think it is a step in the right direction. this album is an improvement. Score is for the first single which gave me some hope. But. The rest is so godawful, even a '1' is too much. oh yeah and good non objective review colin, oregon pride! I agree that the "punkier" moments are damn catchy, and i mean the guys can write a mean hook, but this album loses me with all the queenesque opera moments and theatrical dramatics, its like a goth version of panic at the disco. jaytee - one of my favorite videos ever. Dont know what happened to my text, anywhom, that's a link to Greenday playing in 1994 and golly gosh is Billie Joe wearing a black collar shirt with a red tie? Yep. Can we put the Greenday wearing ties to be trendy thing a rest forever now please? Ok, now I just feel bad. Colin, I like a lot of your reviews. I feel like an ass. Listen, I overreacted and you shouldnt have to address me. Friends forever. to address variouis concerns: I cannot stand their new single. ugh i have this ironic appreciation for the band. For the last few days I've been thinking about the disposability of pop music and how I don't know anybody who still praises, for example, N'Sync's first album, but I know too loads of people who still preach albums like 'Ghost Stories.' Granted, Ghost Stories came out a couple years later, but it's the same principle. This band will be pretty much forgotten in a few years. I got half way through the review. This review makes me want to hulk smash all my Larry Arms cds, find the nearest lipstick, and date a woman named Rocky. I'm so sick of this too cool for school attitude. Absolutepunk here I come. holy shit scruffy. you not only outed me as a closet mcr fan, you threw in a mom dig...how creative. not nearly as creative as "love and squalor"...dude i was thinking emo or metalcore all the way but it was a lawrence arms karaoke cover band. rock on. when they try punkier moments it is actually kinda catchy but the theatrical parts just suck. "This album isn't that bad for what it is. I think it is a lot like queen, and I like queen. So yea." best review ever, why do my show reviews never make it? " Friend, there's no shame in Skankin' Pickle. good review. you ever totally forget you used to listen to a band back in the day? for some reason "it's not too late" popped into my head the other day so i busted out a skankin' pickle cd from under my bed. the songs are kinda lame but really catchy. review the actual music next time. i got absolutely nothing out of that review. not that i was really looking for anything but still, that read more like pitchforkesque bashing with all the fluff and snide remarks. review the actual music next time. don't say "they're a pop band...it's like an opera...it's bad" tell us why and how it doesn't work. I tried listening to the stream but I only got 3 songs in before I got so annoyed I had to turn it off and punch a baby in the face to make me feel better. "Hey, we want to do that. But without any honesty or sentiment involved. And outfits -- we need outfits." Even black people hate this album ! ! It is THAT bad ! ! Even black people hate this album ! ! It is THAT bad ! ! Even black people hate this album ! ! It is THAT bad ! ! so last week's number one review on punknews.org was the Killers. this single, with the "my father, he told me, da na na, na na na" so last week's number one review on punknews.org was the Killers. I haven't heard this album but that's a horrible review. It reads like it was meant to garner "scene points" rather than same something substantive about the album. This album isn't that bad for what it is. I think it is a lot like queen, and I like queen. So yea. I really dig the first half of this album, then well, I dunno what the fuck is going on. american idiot sucked. 'nuff said. |
