"Teenagers scare the living shit out of me!"

As Gerard Way screams this line in one of the worst (but simultaneously catchiest) songs on the new My Chemical Romance album, I can't help but agree, because those teenagers are going to make this one of the biggest hits of the year, in all its vapid entertainment and lifted sing-along music. However, I've got to say, this is My Chemical Romance's finest effort yet, because it is an exact representation of what this band is: a theatrical, over-the-top joke.

The Black Parade is like a really bad movie, where it's so bad it's actually good. Listening to this, you can see what all the make-up and hair obsessions are all about. It's like going to a play and closing your eyes. I'm convinced in a past life, Gerard Way was an overweight Italian woman singing in an opera house. Every song has theatrical moments, from the end of "Dead!" to the ballad of the first single, "Welcome to the Black Parade."

I'd compare this album to the new Dashboard Confessional record, in the sense it will be a huge hit while failing to offer any sort of intellectual value. Supposedly it's about cancer, but the music is is far too superfluous to be taken seriously, which is the biggest downfall. This record also sounds like the band listened to American Idiot and took Rob Cavallo aside and said, "Hey, we want to do that. But without any honesty or sentiment involved. And outfits -- we need outfits." And what we have is The Black Parade. Cavallo did at least a good job at tapping into the band's earlier sounds and making them even more attractive to the pop audience ("The Sharpest Lives"). So long as the band isn't actually taking themselves as seriously as the promotions suggest, this is quite a fine pop record.

However, it is just that. A pop album. Any band trying to get their music to be taken seriously would not do it with such a verbose overtone of Broadway in the background. This is meant to be entertainment -- sugar-coated candy. Nothing more. And if it is trying to be something more, well, that's a bad thing. I couldn't help but chuckle the entire way through the 51-minute effort, double-taking many times after thinking, "Hey, I've heard this before," for every time the band took a riff from a play or movie (like the entirety of the aforementioned, "Teenagers"). I almost felt bad for laughing half the time, remembering this is about cancer or something, but I highly doubt the band actually believes in all that promotion. And if the cancer thing was their idea, they did a hell of a job at turning an incredibly serious disease into a complete joke; they use the subject matter for the token slow, piano-based song that is just, well, pretty bad all around. Actually, it's pretty offensive to think of this album as being serious in nature.

Is this a good album? Not really. I doubt I'll ever listen to this one again. Gerard Way has a voice as annoying as Billy Corgan, but can't write anything beyond trite and contrived repetition. For fans of the Hot Topic-friendly imagery and color schemes, well, this will surely be a big success. However, while American Idiot remained a poignant statement about a serious problem in the world for -- so far -- several years after being released, The Black Parade ends up being nothing but an empty void of theatrics riding on the coat-tails of a legitimate success. It will sell millions of copies that will end up being millions of memories of people looking back, years from now, saying with a smile and a chuckle, "Wow, look at the horrible shit I used to listen to."

And my chemical romance HAVE saved peoples lives, because to some people, MUSIC MATTERZ! GERARD WAY puts in lyrics that MATTER, AND SINGS IT WITH PASSION! AND IF U DONT LIKE THE GUITARS, DONT GO ON A PUNK ALBUM WEBSITE U NUMPTIES!

MEMBERS OF THE MCRmy, DONT TAKE WORTHLESS SHIT FROM PEOPLE LIKE THEM...JUST BECAUSE THEY DONT LIKE THE BAND, IT DOESNT MEAN THEY CAN TELL SUICIDAL PEOPLE TO HANG THEMSELVES IN A GARAGE.

I am proud to be a fan of mcr because they stand for something. people who dont appreciate that...thats fine...but dont go and write stupid shit on the comment wall for the fans to see.

this review summed up in words what i've been trying to say for a year and a half now. i used to be completely enamored by mcr when i heard three cheers for sweet revenge, not because it was the popular thing to do (and i was in seventh grade, so listening to music for the actual musical content was rare), but just because i could listen to songs of theirs over and over again and i'd get chills every time.

i was thoroughly disappointed with the black parade however. i felt that while their first two albums didn't joke around a lot, the black parade was a little too juvenile and sounded too poppy. i also felt like if i actually liked the album, i wasn't proud to say it anymore.

it seemed like this album was directed more towards a middle school audience, which is not always a bad thing, but i also know that kids in that age group love to love music because it's the cool thing to do. i've heard that the band is going for a more punk rock sound next time around, and i'd love nothing more than to see them return to their roots because i still think their first two albums merit their redemption.

This album is meh. Teenagers is catchy, the beginning of Black Parade or whatever the fuck it's called is kind of cool. Mostly mediocore, I could find better shit, I could stand some of this shit. Anyone on here telling someone to like it or hate it is a douche, people have different opinions on music, get the hell over it.

"Seriously, what's with MCR fans and saying that their music saved their life?"

Better yet, why can not a single one of them spell or construct a grammatically correct sentence?

One scene point to this fashion fad for actually having the gall to feature Liza Minnelli in a song.

But then again, what do scene points mean.

Geez, a bit harsh! My Chem deserve more kudos for making an album where I find it hard to pick out my faves, cos they're all so good. Come on! Who doesnt find Dead's lalalas infectious and entertaining? The concept of the album isn't only about illness, it;s about losing someone you love, it's about death, it's about regret. And I think anyone could take that seriously, while listening to some kickass tunes from a band who cares about what they write about.

    Posted by hollie-alicia on 2007-01-18 04:54:20

this review is crap, its completely wrong.
the album is amazing! the only thing you have got right about it is that all of their songs are catchy. this album is just as good as three cheers for sweet revenge, and its different. both albums prove how much my chemical romance, as a band, have matured.

anyone can relate to the lyrics, and i mean rom the fake-desinger-obssessed-chavs to the blinging-hiphop-gangsters to the grungy-im-an-individual metalheads. the song "cancer" is so meaningul, everyone can relate to it because nearly everyne has been touched by cancer in their lives so it just makes the lyrics and the songs meaning stronger.

and im going ot take a wild guess and say that who ever reviewd this was either listening to it on an illegally high dosage of crystal meth or they are one of those people who only like a certain type of music, like death metal, or "grunge" metal, who thinks they are a loner and are individual and no one gets them when really they wind up being just like everyone else, and they cant relate to the message that my chemical romance are trying to stress (live life to the full but dont fear death) and beacuse they are not screamin or growling into a microphone and thrashing so hard on their guitars you wonder how good their wanking arm is, they decided that when it was their job to review the album, they didnt listen to it very well because they made up thier mind and thought they should dislike mcr. how am i doing so far?

and sa for me? well, i'm no emo, i'm not mosher, im not punk, i'm not metal head, i'm not alternative, i'm not indie, i'm not skater, i'm not a death metaller, i'm not a chav, i'm not ghetto, im not a "spice" girl, and i'm not a diva, i am infact all of them put into one. i accept all kind of mucis, especially the ones whose lyrics mean something. my favourite asrtist/bands can range from cradle of filth to fergie to led zeppelin to take that. seriously try having a broader taste in music and you'll find you like everything, then you really are the individual.

and my chemical romance cant really be that shit because, 2.7 million albums sold (so far) and a number one hit single says different

    Posted by silent_slayer on 2006-12-31 01:05:23

I agree with MrTimmerz in the fact that MCR has gotten good reviews on mass media, but MCR is commercially-directed; these guys are not true punk artists to the eyes of hardcore punk rock fans, and I kinda share that belief. I mean, these guys are acting, at least in this album, as kids that strum guitars and sing lyrics deserving of boy bands, unlike their preceding album. This is the idea they should avoid if they don't wanna end in oblivion by the punk fans. They should go back to their speedy ways of Three Cheers and be more aggressive on the lyrics, whether based on stories or not.

    Posted by MrTimmerz23 on 2006-12-30 01:18:47
    My Score:

I have several points to make on the stupidity that the writer is spreading around.
    A. You can't compare My Chemical Romance and Green Day. Do they similar attributes? Definitely. However, American Idiot and the Black Parade, no matter how similar they sound, talk about two completely different topics.
    B. The people that comment that review and try to defend My Chemical Romance SUCK. None of you know how to spell, how to form sentences, or how think logically. I understand why people hate MCR fans. A ton of them are stupid assholes. However, I'm not going to let that ruin my experience of the album.
    C. Theater is a huge influence on any musician. Music's been on stage for centuries and right now, theatrical inspiration is making regular rock and punk rock albums better than ever. At certain points, I understand that the Black Parade can delve too much into the storyline. However, for the most part, it's a very loose base concept album that just has a moral for every song of the album.
    D. This album has been reviewed by SPIN Magazine as the #5 Best Album of the Year. Plenty of magazines and websites have called The Black Parade, My Chemical Romance's best album to date. They've received a ton of 4/5 stars, 4.5/5 stars, and 5/5 stars reviews by the some of the most revered writers and newspapers.
IN CONCLUSION: We can all listen to Colin and think "Oh and look at how punk that kid is. I'll never be as cool as him! " Or we can all listen to the Black Parade and think "Haha. That Colin kid is really missing out. Poor handicapped child."
    =Mr. Timmerz =D

I find this album, strangely good, although i agree it does as you suggest have all the qualities of some awesome sing-along with me I am mass produced even without the makeup and 'emo' hairstyles type music to it (although they seem to be ripping off Queen/the Offspring an awful lot). but thats what popular music is, and does.

HOWEVER...i take offence to you suggesting Billy Corgan has an annoying voice...Billy is just uhh different, slightly whingey/whiney yes, but a rock God all the same, and he and his music should never be compared with the likes of My Chemical Romance, because although i found this album and allbeit the previous one listenable, Billy Corgan (and the Smashing Pumpkins....for all those little kids who have no idea who he is) are amazing, his poetry is the reason i am here today. so really to compare the two is crazy talk!!. But still at least you know who Billy is, so many people I talk to are oblivious...so i am now left wondering how many of the music 'critics' that have bagged you out for your oppinon really know what they are talking about...Its funny really, people are like you bagged out my favourite band...YOU SUCK...heh and in doing so contradict themselves...

you know I don't know why I even bother looking at news or reviews on here anymore because some(not all) of you inconsiderate people on here just flame on the bands!!!Seriously it's getting old!!! If you don't like the band then why bother reading their news or reviews? It's so pointless!!!but wait no you'd rather just piss people off that really love the band right?have some respect. I don't care for some bands too but I also don't look up info and news about them so I can write in their comments and say well they suck!.. blah blah blah. It's rude and disrespectful to the people who really like them.I myself Love MCR to death and I think they have worked very hard to get where they are now!I have all of their albums AND I love them all. I've seen them live twice also and they were great! If you absolutely hate them, then that's your opinion but we don't need to hear about it.And I don't need to hear people say" well you obviosly have no taste in music if you like (band's name)" Everyone has different a different taste in music and is entitled to like what they want. So people don't need other people telling them what's music and what's not.If you like a certain type of music and think it's MUSIC then it is to you and no one should tell you different .MCR is music to me!So I am proud of their new album and I think it is absolutely amazing!!

If you understand what I mean by most of this and agree then thank you.

Goodness me there's a lot of prejudice people on here. I'll admit the review was well written with a pretty good vocabulary but being a musician I think this album is a work of musical genius. Not everyone can come up with an entire album full of catchy riffs and outstanding structure. Sure there's not a lot of depth to the lyrics but thats not what everyone listens to music for. I personally think Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen are the most boring people on earth. I could think up their song structures in my sleep, but they do have good lyrics. So to each his own, and I love everything about this album. Especially the theatrical elements. Plus I was raised on musicals.

I guess it depends on what you feel important is. To me,d ealing with personal issues is much more important than a politicial message.

I agree with you though, that ocne you actually sit and lsiten to the words the story comes out. It took me a few lsitens, but it's really such a great concept.

I don't even know why you bother reviewing albums on this site. It's like those websites that say they sell "punk, ska, hardcore, oi and emo" cds or clothing.
That really fucks me off, because emo takes bits of punk, and corrupts them. The attitude and music of punk and emo are not similair at all.
People I've met who don't like punk as much as me I listen to bands like Face To Face, they sit there and go "that sounds emo."
It's not emo, its just because you listen to shitty emo bands that think they are punk as well and have combined the two.
Emo and punk should be very seperate, and with this website reviewing bands like this and dashboard its clear to see why its happened.

And don't tell me mcr arn't emo, they are, they are shitty pop emo rock for little kids and unpopular kids who realised their hair can flick to the side and over their eye nice and easy.

Theatrics are great, i mean, look at alice cooper! now that's badass theatrics! but the problem i have with MCR is they're using the theatrics to distract us from BLAND songs... at least blink182 had a good backbeat...

I disagree with colin. I have been arguing with him on this board (I have two previous comments). I think his review is unfair. I looked at his website and think he's a bit pretentious. That all being said, I really like the guy. He's funny. Some of his reactions have been funnier than the comments he's replying to and he's taking a beating from some of these people in good stride.
For the record, I like this band. I like all of their albums. I'm 26, I don't wear make-up or dress in black often, I've been going to punk shows for the past 15 years (my first was Descendents) and I don't shop at Hot Topic.

First off, the album flows insanely well. Every song just rolls right into the next one, the production is amazing.

Second, once you understand the lyrics and the metaphors that basically flood each and every song on the album, you really begin to realize just what MCR is trying to do with the Black Parade. The story is just unbelievable. Once you understand the story, the music truly comes alive.

While it may not be a more important story than the one Green Day was trying to tell with American Idiot, MCR somehow manages to make a much more entertaining one.

    Hey, I need some help.

I was just casually looking through different iTunes of people on my floor, and this girl has this song with no name or artist but I'm dying to figure out who it is.

It starts out with a quote from Donnie Darko ("I guess some people are just born with tragedy in their blood.") And the production is pretty weak, but the singer has a high-voice thing going on with some dude screaming in the background, it's pretty generic but it's catchy as hell.

Lyrics involve lines like... "It takes a lot of preparation to design the perfect funeral... flowers and candy and invitations..." sounds like he's saying "cursive" a lot... "Oh you know how I feel about sharp metal grinding on" something something.

Come on someone has to know this.

I tiny change big whooop and yes there are a lot of bands with shitty music videos and I compared it to a Marilyn Manson video because that is basically what it is, a ripoff of the same style. Go into the Marilyn Manson video vault to see the style they ripped off.

"This album has taken a complete different turn..they added a piano and a cabaret track".. maybe I was off and should've just mentioned that lyrically it is the same album...that there is nothing fuckin special about it...I will give them this, they will sell shitloads of records because people like you will constantly say "oh it's amazing..its brilliant...the fact that they took the time to get someone to put a piano line is something i never saw coming..." the way their last album was headed, all the tiny changes they made were obvious changes..shit i could've expected...give me something I wouldn't expect you to do and then I'll say you took a risk...

To Vek21: Are you saying that out of every band that you like none has ever made a crappy music video? I mean come on, most music videos today suck on some degree but my God don't ever compare m.c.r. to Marilyn Manson. And I don't know what you’re talking about when you say that this album sounds like the last album because it's taken a completely different turn.
It almost seems like you've never heard the last album because if you ask anyone who's heard it, they'll tell you it's different. Another thing, um, the fact that a piano is played on the album makes it different already and previously they've never had these soft songs like Cancer, I don't love you, and disenchanted which are nothing like the last album. And have you even heard the song Blood? That's cabaret, which is nothing like m.c.r.'s old style.

i'm sure its been stated (because there are way more replies than i care to read right now), but if you've written a review of this album and it doesn't speficially mention Queen or Pink Floyd, you have no business reviewing this album. i'm sorry colin, but you have no business reviewing this album. yes, american idiot is a very strong place to start making comparisons (especially if you begin with the single), but there are so many other influences that are more strongly apparent than that one, that to not have mentioned them shows this band has actually gone over your head as a music reviewer and deserves far more credit than you're giving them. from a production and arrangement stand-point alone, they've excelled not only above other bands of their genre, but even american idiot. the complexity of the arragemnets and layering is far more interesting than anything on american idiot. all that being said, i'm not saying i like the record, i'm just pointing out that this record has its merit and deserves to properly reviewed, which in my opinion you have failed to do.

Incidentally, pop is a genre of which many bands exist. Pop-shoved-down-your-throat is a separate sub-genre that tends to take the spotlight. Paper Moon, for the Canadians, is a pop band. Evanescense is a pop-shoved-down-your-throat band. Aaron Booth, what is it with Canadian pop, is a singer-songwriter who writes what can be termed pop songs. Mariah Carey is a Pop-shoved-down-your-throat crack whore, band.

That makes sense, because you know, someone shouldn't review an album based on the musical content. A for Effort!

"Pop" is defined as "popular music". People have this misconstrued vision that pop is just Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera, but it really isn't. You can't classify a band like Evanescence (whom I dislike) as pop and try to dismiss My Chemical Romance as either a harder or more complex band. It's an overgeneralization and, frankly, an exxageration. Both of said bands are considered pop if you want to get down to placing bands in genres.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at 4:33 PM (EDT)

For one, all of the people who have never heard this album yet say it sucks based on who m.c.r. WERE, do not make any sense at all. And like what someone wrote before, it's not possible that most of you heard the album because it just came out, so don’t say you have. You have no right to be commenting on this at all because you have nothing to back up your statement.
Second, I am an m.c.r. fan but I can say even if the review was negative it expressed some good points. Like he wrote, a lot of the songs were similar to that of other songs and movies, etc and I have to agree. And yeah, m.c.r. did state queen as a major influence but bands like 'cute is what we aim for' have stated 'Taking back Sunday' as an influence and if you've heard both bands albums they don't sound similar. It's just that m.c.r. have taken maybe a little too much to the point where it almost seems like they're trying to recreate songs from bands that were popular, almost like they want to be this big popular band. It's hard to admit if you're as big as a fan as I am but don't deny it by saying half-assed things like "Best Band Ever. My God they are so hawt."
But I don't want to say these things with the intention of making it sound like-what I say is right-because we're all entitled to our opinions. Not to say that the album was not good, unlike most people here are writing, the album is not "shit" but something that is definitely enjoyable and despite how much m.c.r. had expressed not revolutionary.
And to the person that said that Gerard couldn't sing on SNL, I think you might have had something in your ears because he sounded great. If you listen to the live version of cancer, and then the version on the album, they sound basically the same.
Another thing, stop calling m.c.r. pop. Pop is Britney spears, Evanescence and Christian Aguilera, not m.c.r.

    My Score:

After listening to this album, I will basically say that this album is pretty much the same as the last album with a tiny bit of change. It follows the whole dark premise writing album that the last one has, the guitars & drums are still giving you a poppy type beat to have you stay a tiny bit interested and the vocals also still have the catchy type dark choruses that Gerard was known for in the last album. What does this mean? That no matter how many people want to say it is over produced, or how many people love MCR, you have to understand that there is still no progression and no change...what? oh wait the rock opera idea that Queen put on is now on this album so we should give MCR a tiny bit of credit saying that they did change? Fuck no! It is easy for a band to take a style that already existed and mimmick...My advice is that if you like this album, great good for you because you found something that interests you and suggest that your friends (who probably listen to this nonsense) that they buy this album and for the people who want some new movement, a new style, a new era...keep searching because MCR will not EVER give you something that someone has not already done better. And please if we want to take it also to music videos, please remember that the Black Parade Music Video is just a sham of a Marilyn Manson video adding they gay poppy sound to it....that's all...

The guy based his judgment on listening to the album. The fact that, after listening to it, it irrevocably changes his opinion of the band is not close-minded. Is "close-minded" becoming the new "pretentious" around here? Close-minded is not a synonym for not liking something"

I don't know, listened to it twice and it seems a lot better than their last album. Their new drummer is much better and the songs seem more interesting.

I'm getting tired of this 'rock opera' movement though. whether its the format, green day, my chemical romance or the killers, why does every band these days feel the need to have some reoccuring theme throughout the album and intros and outros and such. american idiot was the shit. dog problems is terrible, this and the killers are pretty good, but its getting tired.

almost as tired as the disco emo movement, like the new afi, panic!, hellogoodbye, 44, hell even the new NFG album has one song with that fast highhat, steady bass drum dance beat. enough of that!

O.K. I sat down last night and actually listened to the entire album. Besides the fact that they stole 80% of the guitar work from Queen and the intro song reminds me vaguely of a track off "The Wall", I guess it is the best this band could have possibly done. After releasing only one big "pop" album you gotta figure that they felt the need to be "taken seriously" And while this CD may stand the test of time for a) People 15 and under b) People that love 'pop' music, I have faith that people that have a legitimate good taste in music will brush this off as exactly what it is, an over produced pop album that will sweep the Grammys. And when that happens odds are I won't be watching.

The review isn't that far off. I think he was a little too harsh on the album because I happen to like it more than he did, but that's just taste. I, too, heard similarities to American Idiot, and I mentioned it to someone before even reading this review. The orchestration and arrangement of some of the songs definitely evokes the Green Day album. Nobody said the band sounds like Green Day. Just that the production of the album is similar. And it definitely is. You guys need to stop putting words/thoughts into people's mouths/minds. Just because the reviewer didn't like it doesn't mean he didn't give it a fair chance and definitely doesn't say anything about his opinions of "punk".

and, to any and all that are calling my review biased, i will not respect your opinions until you can prove me wrong somehow. i highly suggest submitting our own, less biased, review to the site and letting me know when it gets posted. i'd be highly intrigued to see what is so biased about giving a record i personally believe is a 1 or 2 a 5 on the stance that it is a vast improvement and i can see why little girls enjoy it.

Also, a lot of people have heard this because the single's been available for weeks and the band was on SNL last weekend. Also, a lot of people probably downloaded it just so they could mock it.

I don't think it's that bad. I wouldn't buy it, but it's definitely an improvement over Three Cheers.

It wasn't a surprise to see MCR panned on here, especially by the same guy that reviewed Three Cheers. I have to say I like the album. I'm not sure how long it will stay in my rotation, but for right now, I'm pretty impressed. Most people here seem to have a poor opinion of MCR, but I respect the fact that they've now released three albums, and every one of them has been significantly different. I think to just compare this record to American Idiot is cutting it short. As someone else mentioned, many of the tracks sound like they were listening to Queen when they made this. Another track had a borderline rockabilly feel, there was some country influence, and some other classic rock influence throughout. There is even the call and repeat style between the vocals and instrumentals that you'd find on a blues album. If nothing else, it shows an appreciation (from the band) for a wide variety of music, and the tenacity to try to incorporate many of these sounds, and really go against the grain of what made them so popular on the last album. Again, maybe this won't last in my rotation over the next couple years, but right now it's sounding really good, and it's just a shame that so many people are cutting it down based on the simple fact that MCR is popular with the Hot Topic kiddies, and that's just not cool.

alright, i just listened to the CD. and if you haven't heard it, you can't say anything about it! despite their track record, this is like a completely different band.

Oh and the Green Day comparison... are you really that stupid? This sounds nothing like American Idiot. Not even close, it's an entirely different grade of rock.

Honestly, how can their be so many posts about a record that most of you couldn't have listened to when it came out yesterday. Further more how can you judge a record you never heard just because you heard the record before it? Bands change. (yea sometimes for the worse... 18v)

but sometimes they have a creative jump. like this record. they actually know HOW to play their guitars now.

whatever... i just think its sad that you are casting judgement on a record you haven't heard, but hey! That's what this page is for right?

I agree somewhat with the reviewer on this one, but I probably enjoyed it a bit more than he did. On the one hand, it's waaay too theatrical. I mean, I get that it's their thing or whatever, but here it just seems to hinder the musicianship. The songs themselves have heart, but with all the bells and whistles, it's a little hard to hear them beat. And on the other hand, it's a fun, catchy, energetic, if not forgettable, album, good for a drive home from work or two. Not a great record, but certainly better than 90% of what everyone calls "emo".

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at 2:56 AM (EDT)

reviews like this are why i hate this website; not only the review, but the comments below. this site is nothing more than the pitchfork of punk rock.

we get it. its cool to hate MCR, or any other band that doesn't put out the same record for 12 years, build up street cred, and call themselves punk.

    it's old, PN. its old.

you know, if you could get the elitist stick out of your ass for 2 seconds, you'd notice that there is some real music talent on this record. yes, the vocals are annoying, and yes, some of the lyrics are rediculous at best. but the musicianship on this record is fantastic. some of the songs have a taste of floyd, queen, bon jovi, against me (first song, anyone?) and even the clash.

and while some of it falls flat on its face, some of it works. really, really well. i want to hate this record so bad, but after streaming it for the past 2 days, i'm going to go purchase it tomorrow.

but just so i won't lose any PN points, i'm going to buy an old bouncing souls record too.

i hate MCR, but i think this is

Im sorry, did they change the album in anyway?
did they write new songs and put them on the album?
ridiculous. Ive also seen alot of "whats punk" crap flying around, and would like to put down this little quote I found

"Fast, hard, and with more concern for passion than proficiency, beyond the politics and societal polemics, punk was about kids picking up instruments and slamming out songs for other kids. Actually, Billie Joe is a very, very good guitar player, he just doesn't do a whole lot with it in Green Day's songs anymore. But listen to what he could do on 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, and that was almost 20 years ago.
Also, yes, we do think punk is creative, or we wouldn't be here. Here's a question: Why are you?
Gerard has a large range and can use it well? Hmmm, then why was he struggling to hit any of the notes right and barely maintaining a monotone on SNL last weekend?
Also, this stuff isn't as bad as I'd expected.

First things first, ignore the username. I signed up for this site way back when I was obsessed with Green Day. I'm not any more, so let's move on.
I'll start by saying that My Chemical Romance's first album kick ed ass. And then they had to go and sign themselves to a major (which is no excuse), and make fake, rip off sort of pop versions of their original sound. The Ghost of You and Helena were the only good songs, and the radio murdered those two so they almost don't count.
From what I've heard off of this one, it's even worse. “Cancer” I think was an honest try for a sort of minimalistic, pure-emotion-effect. When I heard it there was a strong emotional impact, but there was also just a bit of cheese, which I think would eventually get to you. MCR is a gothic band. Or at least it’s what their going for. “I brought you my bullets, you brought me your love” was about vampires, don’t tell me they’re not gothic! :P

For all of the Green Day references, here’s what I have to say:
Regardless of whether GD is a certified “Punk” band or not, they’re still a good band. American Idiot was a good album until the radio and music channels got a hold of it. Plus they took some risks and got pretty cheesy, without realizing just how cheesy (I hope) . One thing I can say is at least they said something. Even if you hate “American Idiot”, you should check out their earlier stuff like “Kerplunk!” (one the best in my opinion) which was made on an indie label, or “Insomniac” which had a very dark, surreal tinge to it. It’s really sad how many people hate Green Day just because of the singles that came

    My Score:

Billie Joe may suck at guitar, but no one is going to talk shit on the rhythm section of the band. Also, they write really good fun, loud, angry songs. They know what they are doing. Billie Joe can't sing, but he has something that is infinitely more important in punk rock: charisma. If you want to impress someone with your 4 octave vocal range, I'm sure the american idol crowd would love to see you apply it to christmas classics.

Punk isnt about how much skill you have...shit, MUSIC isn't about how much skill you have. It's about how creatively you can apply the gifts that you posess.

The album is definately OK... nothing worth going out and buying. Can definately see Pink Floyd's The Wall influence as well as Queen. But definately the album will do well because of all the little "pop-punkers" that haven't been introduced to good music yet. The lyrics are pretty good, but the music is not great - too broadway-esq. The best thing about the album is the cover art, and thats pretty much it.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 9:35 PM (EDT)

"Hey, we want to do that. But without any honesty or sentiment involved. And outfits -- we need outfits."

Oh so, I guess Green Day sporting their black shirt, red tie, white belt wasn't outfit... not in the sense that it went thematically with their album art.

"A pop album. Any band trying to get their music to be taken seriously would not do it with such a verbose overtone of Broadway in the background."

Since when did using 'broadway overtones' define a band as 'pop'? And, we ALL know Green Day is the pinnacle of the "punk" music scene because punk is such a narrow genre it's only used to define the bands that you, personally, think are worthy of such a "rebellious" title, otherwise its just 'pop'. Pfff.

"Supposedly it's about cancer, but the music is is far too superfluous to be taken seriously, which is the biggest downfall."

You've overlooked the bands previous efforts which had a very similar, albeit darker guitar riffs and attitudes. This sound just didn't appear out of thin air. It's been a steady progression with their music. and last time I checked, the most serious of topics have never had to be followed with serious attitudes. Artists, musicians, people that love their job, people that have passion for what they do are allowed to have good time doing what they do regardless of the message and you can tell this band still does.

My point is Colin, regardless of your score, your walked into this review thinking "this band is: a theatrical, over-the-top joke" and knowing you would walk out thinking "I doubt I'll ever listen to this one again." Your review is unprofessional and biased. You're so punk.

The score is for the album.

This album is good. If you hated their old stuff, give this a try with open ears. In the grand scheme of things, this album is probably very important. This might be the first bullshit emo band that finally took the chance to grow into something...better. While still managing to keep their fanbase.

It's a fucking review, not some kind of smear campaign. Reviews are only all glowing praise when only fanboys write them.

Anywho, this is just yet another review that has turned into an orgy of finger-pointing here on this website. It's pretty dumb.

While the review wasn't bad, it wasn't particularly good either. While some of the comments and tone of the review are arrogant in a way, the descriptions of the music seem to be fitting.

This band has gone their own way, I'll give them that. But beyond that, their decision to walk the path of the rockstar has made their music suffer, in my opinion. Their first album was pretty damn solid and showed promise of a simple niche pop rock band with some punk influences, but about half of their second release showed that they were headed in a different direction than I'd hoped. Oh well. I don't know what this is, but after hearing the single I know I'll hate it, as I realize he "tries" to sing a lot on this album, when it was better when he didn't try so damn hard.

Whatever. Score is for the review.

holy crap that's the best comment ever. the multitude of inaccuracies as far as your idea of art criticism as well as your inability to punctuate or use proper spelling and grammar put your age around 13 or 14.

you can tell me my taste sucks all you want. i highly suggest looking up subjectivity versus objectivity. by the time you graduate high school, you'll be able to appreciate (hopefully) art criticism.

also, you're exactly the demographic i was speaking of when i wrote that last sentence in the review.

On the superfluous topic - its usage is more of an idiom. It doesn't necessarily have to be "extra" to something; that's the dictionary def., but over the years, it's become more of just a quick label. It work better than using "extraneous" to describe music, too.

As for the review, jesus, he went easy on this CD. It's overproduced, mainstream garbage. There is no emotion in this; everything's professionally tooled and engineered. It doesn't even sound like music, let alone a band. Everyone who stands up for this CD has either very little exposure to music or is younger than 15 years old - no offense.

We all listen to at least one or two weird/poppy/screamo/guilty pleasure bands. If you can admit the flaws of these bands and still enjoy it on your own thats fine. For me, one of those bands is 311, I rarely listen to them, but can take a certain level of enjoyment from a song like "Creatures (For a While). But to play guilty pleasure music in front of a crowd or your friends and have someone say "what is this shit?" or "change the song" is just a failure of taste. When a screamo song comes on randomly or a horrible rapping 311 song comes on, I'm embarrased for myself. Keep it in the headphones. Let this shit never reach the public arena. The best music can be enjoyed by a collection of people with biased tastes and open minds.

Until you've actually LISTENED to this album (which I'm assuming 99% of you haven't) don't critique his opinion on the effect of the music because you really don't have a fucking clue what you're talking about. Try formulating a defense to your review-bashing instead of writing elementary responses such as "This review sucks. It lacks depth." Those kind of comments are exactly why he's doing the review and you're not.

And also, elitism comes with being a critic. It's not always intentional, but when you're reviewing something, especially if you don't like it, you'll come off elitist one way or another. We're all elitist. So get over it. Score is for the review.

Not, that I have even heard the album yet. I just logged on to see reviews if I should pick it up. But holy crap... these message boards are a throw back to when I was 13 years old. Snobism is the oppisite of the messsage the music sends. Grow up and support the scene. Even if you don't like the band it could be worse, these kids (in the band) could have finished college and instead of writing about how "gay" you think they are, you could be getting them coffee. Now whats worse, a "concept album" or more suits?

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 2:49 PM (EDT)

"extraneous" would be more precise. Something has to be superfluous in relation to something else. Superfluous means "extra" in most usages, which means it has be to extra with respect to an established quantity or degree.

Either way, this review reeks of hate. You're just jealous kids who would KILL to be in this band's position.

What's the point of reviewing this album on this website? This is a good site but you guys have the worst reviews in the world because you're all so closed-minded and biased. I don't mind that you dislike the album but all the reviewers can muster up is that they don't like guys wearing eye liner.

Posted by Deadpan on 2006-10-24 13:02:46

This review's actually really good. Whilst I hate MCR and all the grandiose, meaningless shit they spew forth, I've got to commend Colin for not attempting to bash the hell out of them. This is just straightforward, detached criticism, which is basically what the ideal music review should be. Sure, it's a negative review, but it's not like he's going "Zomgz, what a bunch of fag0rtz, they fuckin suk". More like "What a bunch of immature deadbeats, who seem to be belittling a serious disease that affects millions of people worldwide through the medium of trite pop songs".

And to be honest, anyone going "Zomgz, talk about the actual music, not the theatrics or their general attitude to makiing music" is just being silly. There's more to a review than saying "And this song is fast, with slighlty heavier distortion. Gerard wails like a sulking 12 year old again". Christ, the theatrics and attitude is a hugely important thing for this band, especially since the music seems to be an afterthought tacked on to trying to present an image.

So this isn't a politically meaningful record like Green Day's American Idiot? So what? Not many records are or even try to be. This record, apparently is about cancer, not the current state of affairs involving the war.

uh... you do realize what you just typed, right? i mean, to me, cancer is pretty fucking serious and these guys made it sound like a joke... and so did you just then. i'm not saying all good music is not pop, i'm saying all pop is not good music.

Cancer is a disease, not politics. Yes. Sometimes, cancer is brought to the political platform, but what it boils down to is the personal issues and the emotions, not who is running on the stem-cell research platform. These guys made a record about how cancer has affected their lives. You happen to not like the record (I have a feeling you didn't like this record before it was even written) that does not mean that what they wrote makes cancer into a joke. You cannot invalidate how they feel about the people they've lost to cancer, because you don't like their music.
Yes, I do realize what I typed and I'd like to know how you thinik that makes a mockery of this disease. All I did was compare (actually show that it cannot be compared) the current war with cancer.

Posted by colin on 2006-10-24 11:33:33

Colin, I'm only confused about one thing...why did you give this a 5? I didn't really see you mention anything that you liked about the CD in the review, so why did this get a 5 instead of, say, a 3? The review's well-written and all, it just doesn't seem to correspond to the score.

well, i will say i liked this record better than the last one, which i gave a 4. but not too much more. also, i believe, even though i didn't enjoy their direction, that the band grew musically into what i believe they represent. while i didn't necessarily like the album, i can see the band's progress, and that is worth points.

why does Colin always review the shitty cds? makes me wonder if he's a closet fan since he seems to enjoy reviewing these cds so much.. either that or he wants to up his punk cred, so he picks on these type of bands.

as to say nothing for verse, circle takes the square, boysetsfire, nirvana, life at these speeds, or any of the numerous shows i review. also, please realize that, in the end, reviews are chosen. these are not the only reviews i've written, however they are the ones that get published. i reviewed the new thrice record, the older alkaline trio album, the blackout pact, the new verse... sometimes my reviews just don't get chosen and sometimes they do. comes with the territory. and if by "punk cred" you mean what a bunch of anonymous 14 year olds on the internet think of me, that's pretty funny and you might want to think about that one.

This dude is an asshole.. Straight up, at leats what is happening is different from everything you hear now.

    a) thank you. b) haha. yeah, and i can say "at least george bush is a politician that sticks to what he believes, unlike any other politician out there." doesn't mean that dude isn't a huge pile of shit rotting in a basement.

So this isn't a politically meaningful record like Green Day's American Idiot? So what? Not many records are or even try to be. This record, apparently is about cancer, not the current state of affairs involving the war.

I haven't checked out the whole album yet, but I've heard the single. 'Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge' grew on me as a kind of fun, guilty pleasure that was easily disposable. However, this album is coming off as an attempt by the band to be taken seriously and I highly doubt this release is going to have anything redeeming.

But I won't spend too much time hating on it, there's an Aiden album next week.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 10:46 AM (EDT)

I have not heard this album yet, so I cannot say whether or not I like it. However, I cannot take this review seriously because it is blatently obvious from the get-go that the reviewer was determined to hate this CD. The majority of the review consists of him stating that he hates the theatricality of the band, rather than discussing the ups and downs of the music, songwriting and lyrics on the album.
So this isn't a politically meaningful record like Green Day's American Idiot? So what? Not many records are or even try to be. This record, apparently is about cancer, not the current state of affairs involving the war.
And, since when was theatricallity a bad thing in music? Granted, it doesn't loan itself to punk very well. But this is not a punk CD (despite MCR's roots and the name of this website). Great bands can be theatrical and over-the-top. The Who, Bowie, Queen, The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Bjork and even The Mars Volta have all done this well. I realize this is not going to be a down to earth CD i.e. Against Me! or Bob Dylan, but comparing an over-the-top band to something so low-key is like comparing Richard Linklater's film, Tape, to Broadway's The Producers and saying The Producers sucked because you just couldn't relate to it on a personal level.

american idiot is a terrible album by a terrible band. If have to hear "when september ends" or whatever that song is again I will have to start shooting people from a watchtower.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 10:05 AM (EDT)

This dude is an asshole.. Straight up, at leats what is happening is different from everything you hear now. Critics suck, dont hate... where is this dudes band, has anyone ever even heard of them, does it even exist, and would it even compare to any of the shitiest of MCR's worst songs.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 9:32 AM (EDT)

How does this record get slammed then get 2.5 stars?

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 9:10 AM (EDT)

This is the best writing I've ever seen in a Punk News review. It's intelligently written, totally fair, and I think the author's assertions are dead on. Finally! Keep up the good work!

OMG U USED BIG WURDS!!11 SO NOT PUNX!!!11

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 8:44 AM (EDT)

I'm no MCR fan, but this review is very biased. Okay, it sucks...it's a joke, we get it...but WHY? It's not descriptive enough about the music; it just criticizes the band's politics.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 8:15 AM (EDT)

why does Colin always review the shitty cds? makes me wonder if he's a closet fan since he seems to enjoy reviewing these cds so much.. either that or he wants to up his punk cred, so he picks on these type of bands.

seriously though, look at what he's reviewed in the past:

    Bright Eyes
    Dashboard Confessional
    Coheed and Cambria
    Straylight Run
the last two My Chemical Romance cds
    Taking Back Sunday
    the list goes on

    My Score:

i hate this album but the review is well written and sums up how i feel about this cd

Posted by historypeats on 2006-10-24 04:34:36

Colin, I'm only confused about one thing...why did you give this a 5? I didn't really see you mention anything that you liked about the CD in the review, so why did this get a 5 instead of, say, a 3? The review's well-written and all, it just doesn't seem to correspond to the score.

I haven't listened to the CD yet, so I don't know what grade it deserves. I just wanted to know what elements you thought made it at least somewhat redeemable enough to avoid getting dropped into the 3/2/1 scores.

Hmmm, someone here didn`t want to like this, am I right ... the reviewer comes oof kinda arrogant ... I think this album isn`t half abd if you take it as what it is ...

Compulsion to sound verbose? you wouldnt perhaps mean "Really really wants to use lots of words"?

what a shit review. sounds like some kid with a thesaurus and a compulsion to sound verbose.

    My Score:

I actually disagree with the reviewer. I have streamed the entire album, and while it might not be revolutionary, it still is a very good album, and I think it is a step in the right direction. this album is an improvement.

Score is for the first single which gave me some hope. But. The rest is so godawful, even a '1' is too much.

oh yeah and good non objective review colin, oregon pride!

    My Score:

I agree that the "punkier" moments are damn catchy, and i mean the guys can write a mean hook, but this album loses me with all the queenesque opera moments and theatrical dramatics, its like a goth version of panic at the disco.

jaytee - one of my favorite videos ever.

superrad - i'm a) drunk, b) incredilbly depressed these days, and c) always open to this idea...

    - music journalism is a funny thing. since punknews is fairly open to the caliber of reviews posted, i see a lot of reviewers holding very hard lines as far as defending what they review. i mean, looking back on my reviews, i've done some stupid things (the netwrok a 5? that was a green day fan mistake), and then taken the feedback and constantly tried to implement it into what i write. i take writingi reviews seriously.

i guess the only thing that bugged me was the absolutepunk aspect. that site has some of the most biased, and poorly written, reviews i've ever read. it's like a circle jerk of alpha-consumer teenagers who don't yet realize they're a demographic.

basically, i don't mind being called arrogant, elitist, or too cool for school - i do try to explain myself, and no harsh feelings were meant. i do believe that journalism needs to have standards. yes, it will isolate people and can come across as being patronizing, but hopefully in the end will raise the bar of lowest common denominator when it comes to what is accepted.

do i expect to change the world of rock journalism in punknews.org reviews? no, but i do enjoy getting really drunk on teh nights my reviews are posted to face an onslaught of comments. but yeah, no hard feelings. i'm jsut goin thru a rough patch right now and came across as a bit harsh, was not really directed at you.

Dont know what happened to my text, anywhom, that's a link to Greenday playing in 1994 and golly gosh is Billie Joe wearing a black collar shirt with a red tie? Yep. Can we put the Greenday wearing ties to be trendy thing a rest forever now please?

Ok, now I just feel bad. Colin, I like a lot of your reviews. I feel like an ass. Listen, I overreacted and you shouldnt have to address me. Friends forever.

Posted by colin on 2006-10-24 03:02:29

    to address variouis concerns:

superrad, i'm sorry you think i have a too cool for school mentality. i've said many times i love a lot of albums most punks hate; taking back sunday's tell all your friends, any and all early drive-thru records releases... i try and keep an objective stance. if i had given this four stars, people would be outraged at punknews' "outlandish review policy." if i had given it 1, people would say "you were just out to get he band." fortunately i didn't let my personal feelings get in the way of the review. i did not like this album, but i can see why it does have strong points and why it is hteir best effort. i feel i went into enough about that.

joeg, love and squalor is a pretty good band, but you're right when scruffy was a bit quick to pull the trigger on an attack. but your first comment was a pretty big target, nonetheless.

to those bashing american idiot, i used the album as an example. i, personally, love the record. however, objectively speaking, an album that is able to bridge both subculture and mainstream media while being poignant about the social and political problems america is facing while selling 5,000,000 copies has been relesased... well, not too many times this decade now, has it? it seems as though mcr wanted to use the successes of that record and somehow duplicate it. maybe there are plenty of punx albums that say what american idiot said better, but a majority of those preach to the choir of relatively leftist teenagers and early twentysomethings whose real world view is still relatively naive. sure, american idiot was on trl, but it was also hailed as a success by critics across the board. i see nothing wrong as using it as a basis for this review.

to the outfit comment, i forgot that matching black shirts and red ties are to be considered outfits. i guess when dookie came out and the boys all had green and blue hair with ripped t-shirts, that was just, uh, punk? i consider the vast amount of matching done between illustrated character skeletons, music video entourages, and stage clothes and hair to be outfits. not matching red ties.

I cannot stand their new single. ugh

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 2:34 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

i have this ironic appreciation for the band.

sure i'd never contribute money towards they're cause, but i can genuinely enjoy their music, speshly the videos, simply because of the excess and unintential hilarity.

Maybe that's an oxymoron, but whatever.

I'd take this over American Idiot any day, least these dudes hve always been wearing eye makeup.

Posted by punkbytheounce on 2006-10-24 02:32:04

For the last few days I've been thinking about the disposability of pop music and how I don't know anybody who still praises, for example, N'Sync's first album, but I know too loads of people who still preach albums like 'Ghost Stories.' Granted, Ghost Stories came out a couple years later, but it's the same principle. This band will be pretty much forgotten in a few years.

I got half way through the review. This review makes me want to hulk smash all my Larry Arms cds, find the nearest lipstick, and date a woman named Rocky. I'm so sick of this too cool for school attitude. Absolutepunk here I come.

Posted by joeg on 2006-10-24 02:14:39

holy shit scruffy. you not only outed me as a closet mcr fan, you threw in a mom dig...how creative. not nearly as creative as "love and squalor"...dude i was thinking emo or metalcore all the way but it was a lawrence arms karaoke cover band. rock on.

colin, i re-read the review and i see some of your points. the arrogant tone from the first to last sentence was still mind numbingly annoying though.

Posted by SloaneDaley on 2006-10-24 01:55:52

when they try punkier moments it is actually kinda catchy but the theatrical parts just suck.

best review ever, why do my show reviews never make it?

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-10-24 01:32:11

    "
i thought i did alright at saying that the music was superfluous, was too poppy and campy for serious subject matter, and was lifted from various old theme songs from plays and movies, and was pretty theatrical and didn't work well with the subject matter.

sorry if that's too "pitchforky" for you."

What he meant, Colin, was, "Next time, just say it's totally awesome and better than sex, or don't review it if you just hate the band! But that doesn't sound good, so I'll just say 'next time review the album' because I've seen that complaint tossed around a lot whether it's apt or not. Oh, now I have to get off the computer because mom says it's bedtime."

I thought the review was good. Definitely told me things I didn't know about this album, though none of those things made me want to listen to it any more than I did before, save for the morbid curiosity.

you ever totally forget you used to listen to a band back in the day? for some reason "it's not too late" popped into my head the other day so i busted out a skankin' pickle cd from under my bed. the songs are kinda lame but really catchy.

Posted by colin on 2006-10-24 01:17:33

review the actual music next time.

i got absolutely nothing out of that review. not that i was really looking for anything but still, that read more like pitchforkesque bashing with all the fluff and snide remarks. review the actual music next time. don't say "they're a pop band...it's like an opera...it's bad" tell us why and how it doesn't work.

"Hey, we want to do that. But without any honesty or sentiment involved. And outfits -- we need outfits."

American Idiot was a a piece of shit album. And Green Day did have outfits for that CD. When they released it, they wore ties and make up. How is that any different then MCR's marching band thing?

this week's is My Chemical Romance.

They're not posted in order of "what is the best album/review", its more what is most anticipated or "popular", if you will.

first time i have been disgusted by a band in a really long time because of the songs they actually wrote

for some reason that song disgusts me as much as davey havok does

I haven't heard this album but that's a horrible review. It reads like it was meant to garner "scene points" rather than same something substantive about the album.

P.S. it's ok for music to be tongue-in-cheek sometimes.
