World Burns to Death is certainly one of underground hardcore's premier bands. They are truly one of the few great punk groups to keep the spirit of the `80s alive. The Sucking of the Missile Cock isn’t necessarily an innovative album, but it certainly combines elements of crust, D-Beat, Scandi-core, and good ol’ U.S. hardcore into something memorable.

This CD contains the full LP plus their Human Meat and self-titled EPs. First of all, the technical skill and quality of musicianship is surprisingly high. They play well, and fast, and when they play fast, they do it well. The guitar sound is heavy, but not overly so, and the bass features some of the prominence that defines “crust punk.” The vocalist reminds me a little bit of Negative Approach's; he has that same sort of spitting bulldog voice (yes, I know that’s how Roger Miret’s vocals are always described, but it sounds nothing like him -- it sounds like a spitting bulldog). The lyrics are mostly put into the traditional D-Beat pattern. You know, the “verse/chorus/same verse/repeat” kinda deal. Still, the lyrics are more specific and informed than Discharge’s “War is bad / I hate war / War is baaaad!” lyrics ever were. Each song comes with its own short essay, or quote, or explanation, á la Anti-Flag. The thing that separates them (lyrically) from Anti-Flag is that they don’t go into CNN detail, which is to say, superficial detail. We don’t need to hear statistics from rock bands, just a general idea of what’s going on. Oh, there’s backing vocals from Lyz of Antischism, which can only be a good thing.

I really like the art style on The Sucking too. The cover art itself is tasteless enough that you know it’s going to be a good album. If you can’t tell, that’s our Dear Leader with a warhead up his anus, and on the right of the album that’s him posing in a very (ahem) compromising position. I would have liked to see more of the art style within the booklet, but I guess they had to make room for the lyrics. So overall, The Sucking of the Missile Cock is juuust shy of a great record. Over time, it could become a punk rock snapshot of the…I believe this would be the first Bush II administration. It’s true -- there is better music when a Republican’s in the White House.

I wonder if Hardcore Holocaust is still having trouble getting the covers and stuff printed...the last I heard, that was the main problem holding up the new LP.

"Punks wrapped up in fucking flags / I'll wrap you up in body bags / Tie your fucking toe tags / and add you to the list of traitors / when did this patriotic pox / start infecting our punk rock / cops and jocks in mohawks / all sucking on the missile cock"

This album is fucking fantastic. Preaching to the choir? Maybe, but doing so with more anger and bile than a thousand lesser bands combined. If you don't already own this you are a total fucking poser.

All of it is true...except it turns out our guitarist, in a past life, was a member of Shelter.

    Is that a true story?

Here is the original nonsensical rant that preceded the review:
After seeing all the emo, screamo, and metalcore reviews that were posted in the past two weeks, I figured that there’s a trend going on here, and that starting my own emo band is the only way for me to make my way into international psuedo-stardom. I gathered up a few friends, plus some actual, you know, musicians, and we started our very own emo/nü-hardcore band. Bleed the Red Autumn had our first show about two weeks ago, in my parent’s garage, to an audience of about 2,000. I, of course, lacking any musical talent, was on vocals. Two of my friends [who shall remain anonymous] were on bass and guitar, and there was this one old guy on drums. He kept telling us he was in some band called “racetraitor”. Weird. Anyway, BtRA was signed to Interscope after our first show, and we were guaranteed a spot on next year’s Warped Tour. If, you know, we wanted it. We released our debut album, We’re Not Down ‘Til You Give Me A Match, For I Deserve to Burn Under the Cork Tree, about two days later. The CD-only release was about 45 minutes long – the recording session lasted about 20 minutes (Thank You ProTools!). It received near-universal critical acclaim; you might remember our cover story for Alternative Press. Unfortunately, it flopped on the charts due to competition from the new Victory Records release, Crisis Crisis. Those bastards. So, we got dropped from our label, Kevin Lyman told us to “fuck off”, and then the band broke up. This quick rise-and-fall got me thinking. Just because emo-pop is popular doesn’t make it good. I should stick to the music I love.

    Hardcore is that music.

I might also add, convenient posting time! The posters here have their mouths firmly wrapped around the missile cock.

    "Great album.

This is radical punk rock my friends. Listen to this and you'll see the difference between the Rise Against, Anti-Flag bands"

What is that difference? Bands that are trying to reach new minds vs. bands that are simply preaching to the choir?

It's like back in the old days if you saw a street punk review, you knew Janelle wrote it.
