Let's clear the air right now. Tim Barry is widely recognizable for fronting the south's mightiest hardcore band, Avail. However, other than the distinctive vocals, you won't find much comparison to Tim's main gig within his solo debut full-length, Rivanna Junction.
Well, I took my last breath of fresh free air,What really sets this album apart is the eclectic variety in the songs, tempos and subject matter. As previously mentioned, Josh Small frequently contributes on the dobro, and the family spirit is kept in tact with his sister Caitlin on violin, and brother James on piano. Tim also joins with instrumentation to accompany his vocal duties, handling duties on the acoustic guitar. On "C'mon Quinn," he is once again joined by sister Caitlin for a love song reaching into the depths of care-free love; tales of train-hopping and carrying beers in a bag while riding a bike paint quite the vivid picture. Tim Barry seems to have taken a very relaxed approach in this effort. None of the songs seem forced, conceited or half-assed -- symptoms that seem to plague many frontmen opting to take the solo road. Instead, Rivanna Junction is a humble offering of life, love, and a few good stories to entertain. The influence of country, bluegrass and folk are all present and blended in a manner that just hums of the obvious southern influence. For those unaware, the south has more to offer than racism, bible-thumping and backwoods/toothless/both rednecks. Lost in the midst of these stereotypes are the amazing qualities southern life has to offer: genuine hospitality, amazing food, beautiful landscapes and a much slower and relaxed way of living. But the summer humidity is horrific... Stream Rivanna Junction at Tim Barry's Punknews.org profile page Please login or register to post comments. kickass simply awesome shit. 5/5 killer, wait at milano and the piano number in the middle are two of the best tracks this year. thanks tim and co suburban home for releasing this. va! So fucking good. Lets hear it for Suburban Home for bringing the twang to all of us punk kids...Ghost Buffalo, Drag the River, Tim Barry...they know exactly what we want. Chris- Great album, "Dog Bumped" is fucking outstanding. People seem to whine about "all these solo projects" but seem to gloss over the fact that these guys are just getting old. People seem to whine about "all these solo projects" but seem to gloss over the fact that these guys are just getting old. It's weird to me that people expect someone to be able to maintain the same amount of energy or enthusiasm several years later. Who wants to be 35 singing the songs about the girls you loved or the bonds that would never break (but did) when you were 18? i havent gotten my paws on this record yet. but im listening to the stream... and its great just like i knew it would be. Checking out the stream now. Getting my lilly ass kicked by this album, wow. "On 'C'mon Quinn,' he is once again joined by sister Caitlin for a love song ..." When will Beau be releasing a solo album? Jesus christ this album is good. Its is loosely based off someone he knows, thoughI'm not sure if the guy is locked up for taking the blame for killing his sister's husband... both this album and the demo are really worth picking up. though i believe the review is incorrect about "Dog Bumped". if i am not mistaken, it is a true story about someone Tim knows (Ken I think is his name) who is doing time right now because of the situation unfolding that way described in the song (the song of course being written in 1st person). atleast that is the way the story was told, when i saw him play down in richmond. it is a shame that people are getting so overloaded with solo spin off projects, cause there is definitely some really good stuff out there. I quite enjoyed the last few lines of this review very much and I think they are things that get overshadowed when talking about the south because everyone is focused on the racism. lol @ the last few sentences i love tim barry's voice. Great review. I met Tim when Avail was opening for Rancid over the summer, and have been waiting for this release ever since. long live avail. hardcore/heartcores finest. I haven't thought much of Avail's last two albums, but this seems interesting... idle idylist is still one of the best songs i've heard in a long while. i should pick this up at some point. Good riview. |
