Let's Rock is a collection of unreleased material dating back to 2000 around the release of The Ever-Passing Moment. Yes, it sounds very different from anything that MxPx has done before -- but that is why these songs were not included on the regular albums.

There are still classic-sounding, fast MxPx songs -- the second track, "Every Light" sounds like the band's earlier material. But overall, this is a straight-up rock record with messages ranging from the conflict between the First World and the Third World in "1 and 3" to dealing with the stress of daily life. Yes, there are three songs about relationships, one of them being one of the strongest tracks on the album ("Don't Forget Me"), and another showcasing a heavy country influence ("Where Did You Go?").

The strongest track on the album by far is "Running Out of Time," a song that sounds like it was originally written for Mike Herrera's side project Arthur. "To trust sometimes is harder than anything...we think we've gotten better, but we're not listening." Clocking in at four minutes, this sounds more like a rock ballad than a traditional MxPx tune, but fits in very well with the rest of the songs. "Slow Ride" sounds almost Jawbreaker-ish with the heavy distorted guitars in the beginning, and "Breathe Deep" is the best single they've released in years.

There are a couple weak spots on the album. The acoustic version of "You Walk, I Run" is completely unnecessary considering that the rock version is also the first track. And while "Don't Forget Me" is one of the better tracks on the CD, the line "my heart still hurts" at the end is a bit repetitive.

Still, this is overall a solid B-side album that will be sure to tide MxPx fans over until their next album, which is expected in 2007 on SideOneDummy.

I love Botch and Blood Brothers but I must say these guys got me into punk music. It's just too bad that their later stuff sucked ass.

Oh and I agree with you. As much as I love the Lawrence Arms, some of you losers on this site need to get a grip. There are other totally awesome bands out there.

Posted by kenjamin on 2006-12-17 01:56:32

I called you a fanboy because of your comments on the "Mxpx re-sign to tooth and nail" thread and not because you like the band.

    *which i disagreed with considerably

    Posted by fallingupwards84 on 2006-12-16 20:08:09

to the two people below me -

one cool thing about this site is if you disagree with a review, you can write your own alternative review and possibly get it posted. thats what i did.

the first review gave it 2 stars which i thought disagreed with considerably, so i wrote my own.

and yes, i do love this band mostly because they were a gateway for me into punk music. when i first heard these guys in high school, i had never heard music that fast before and it was pretty fucking cool. over time i broadened my music tastes and now i prefer early 80s hardcore. but i still think these guys kick ass

so if thats being a "fanboy", whatever. personally i think we have a shitload of lawrence arms "fanboys" on here, but i like them too. note that i criticized a few things about the album - i didnt think it was perfect by any means.

We need two reviews of this because the first one wasn't written by a total fanboy.

    Posted by boba_fett on 2006-12-16 18:48:43

why do we need 2 reviews of this?

I agree, Panic was a good album.

Wait, they're on Tooth & Nail now? Geez, they're super-fags now.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at 12:19 AM (EST)

I agree. Panic was one of their best records in a LONG time. The FAT EP was really bad.

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-12-15 21:27:25

"If its true itll be the first record ill bye of theirs since the FAT EP."

Dude, Panic was an awesome album, and the Fat EP sucked.

When I saw Propagandhi they introduced 'Rock For Sustainable Capitalism' with a story about one the members of MXPX. Their merch guy did MXPX's merch on the Warped Tour one year and told one of them to pull up their (insanely low) trousers. Dude from MXPX apparently flipped out and started trying to punch the merch dude and shouting at him.

    Dweebs.

Posted by Crashtester on 2006-12-15 19:15:29

I also read that Mike is promising fast melodic hardcore songs for their return record for tooth and nail. If its true itll be the first record ill bye of theirs since the FAT EP.

    Posted by davebrave4 on 2006-12-15 18:52:37

These guys had the singer from Mest doing vocals last time a saw them, and he actually didnt sound that bad.

But I truly hope they arent going back to Tooth&Nail.

"Mxpx did this to fulfill the contract obligation to Sidonedummy, they are back on Tooth and Nail now...

    i hope that's a joke.

    My Score:

I figured fallingupwards would give this a high score, but i really don't disagree too much. obviously not as good as the reissue of let it happen, but i found myself liking this a lot.

MxPx is like a cochroach....and someone needs to squish them once and for all

    Posted by Hey_Asshole on 2006-12-15 00:57:08

i really miss mxpx...no no, nevermind. after having to see them play with streetlight manifesto and reel big fish this summer, i miss the days of roman's feeding christians to fucking lions.

"hi, we are mxpx...since we are sick, we are going to have tony from mest sing all our songs...then, just for fun, we are going to play a song by the clash so badly that even joe strummer's corpse would want to fucking kick our asses"
